Here It Comes: Obama Considering Executive Order To Raise Minimum Wage

Tyler Durden's picture

We thought that all perfectly idiotic headlines regarding the encroachment of central-planning would come from traditional banana republics as Venezuela, and of course France, such as the following:

  • MADURO SAYS VENEZUELA TO HAVE NEW FX SYSTEM
  • MADURO SAYS DOLLAR TO REMAIN AT 6.3 BS/DOLLAR IN 2014
  • MADURO CREATES AGENCY TO ENFORCE FAIR PRICES
  • MADURO SAYS LAW TO ALLOW MAX. 30% PROFIT MARGIN
  • NIGERIA TO SET UP FANNIE MAE-STYLE MORTGAGE FINANCE CO.
  • FRANCE PASSES LAW TO TAX WEALTHY AT 75%

And so on.

Boy were we wrong.

Moments ago The Hill reported that what many thought was absolutely impossible, may in fact become a reality: President Obama is considering issuing an executive order (#394,039,993,837?) to raise the minimum wage for Federal Workers... and in the process - with the help of that other central planner par excellence Bernyellen - lap all those other Banana republics that everyone so enjoys making fun of.

From the Hill:

President Obama is considering using his executive authority to raise the minimum wage for federal contractors, he told Senate Democrats during a closed meeting at the White House.

Lawmakers present at the Wednesday night session said Thursday that Obama did not bring up the matter himself, but appeared receptive to the idea when questioned on the topic. “The issue was raised,” Sen. Barbra Boxer (D-Calif.) said Thursday. “He said he was looking at it, as he looks at everything else.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who was also in attendance, offered a similar account and said he has heard from members of the president’s staff that he is seriously considering executive action on the measure.

Obama and congressional Democrats are pushing for an across-the-board hike in the minimum hourly wage, from $7.25 to $10.10. But Republicans are cool to the plan, warning it could hurt the economy.

Federal contractors represent only a fraction of the nation’s employees. Businesses that together received more than $446 billion in federal contracts employ some 2 million workers, only some of whom are paid the minimum wage. Still, an increase for that segment of the workforce could generate momentum toward a raise for all workers now paid the lowest amount allowable by law.

An executive order to that effect would be tantamount to setting a minimum wage for federal contractors, they said. “Profitable corporations that receive lucrative contracts from the federal government should pay all of their workers a decent wage,” the lawmakers wrote. Obama in recent days has vowed to make 2014 "a year of action," even if it means relying heavily on administrative authority to pursue policy goals in lieu of congressional action.

Suddenly it all makes sense: in order to "fix" one idiotic act of central planning with unintended consequences, namely letting the Fed take over capital markets in order to preserve the oligarchic, kleptocratic system, pardon financial stability, and in the process make the uber-wealthy richer beyond their wildest dreams, while making the poor yearn for the days of the first Great Depression, the president will now one-up that act, and progress with even more "centrally-(un)planned", authoritarian acts which bypass Congress entirely, make a mockery of the republic, result in even more adverse unintended consequences, and practically assure that in the great race for the Banana Republic (or is that Banana Dictatorship?) endgame, the US has just overtaken everyone.

If only the Fed could now proceed to stop pretending things are getting better and promptly Taper the Taper, so as to push the superturbo printing button, it would at least assure that the great reset will come that much faster. At this point, it couldn't possibly come fast enough.

A government that does nothing is the best that you can expect from Governemnt.

When Governemnt passes any law you can be assured that you are going to get fucked. The best Government that you can hope for is one that is hopelessly paralyzed by GRIDLOCK. That way they will not pass laws to screw you over.

Why wouldn't they? They need more people to pay for Obamacare. Raise the wage, fewer deductibles, and more people in the single payer bucket.

The additional funds in th system will not go to the consumers, but to the socialist government that's currently leading our nation (and not in the right direction).

It would be stupidity on the central planners part if they were making a mistake. This is no mistake. It is a deliberate, well thought strategy, to lead their obsequious gushers as a means to strengthen their despotic grip on the rest of us.

The central planners are often of the highest IQ in society or at least are smart enough to surround themselves by high IQ persons. Their stunning cunning resides in their ability to manipulate the stupidity, or just genuine gullibility, of their totem-pole gazing admirers.

As we have seen it throughout history, we know that central planning always fails. How can they have a high IQ then?

Central planning is the complete ignorance of economic laws. You can ban markets, but you can't ban economic laws. The horrible outcome of this idiocy is always predetermined.

Let's look at this for what it really is. The ACA and all of Obungas scandals(Benghazi, IRS, Fast & Furious, Syria, ect...) have damaged his party. When he says that 2014 is going to be a year of action, it's really just "code" for buying votes.

Obungsta is looking to buy any vote that he possibly can before November. Anyone that actually thinks he gives a rats ass about anyone but his own "sociopathic self" should promptly find the first hole in the ground and insert their head in it.

Per the Constitution, executive orders only pertain to the executive department of the federal government:

http://constitutionmythbuster.com/2013/01/12/do-executive-orders-violate-the-constitution/

But since this document is ignored by despots and their cheerleaders, then the congress, can override it, the supreme court can override it, or each individual state can challenge it. Are there any despotic desires in the members of congress, the supreme court, or states representatives? ...The other alternative is desperately trying to explain how price controls ultimately have the opposite effect of the proclaimed intent.

This whole thing is about a TAX INCREASE. That is what raising the Minimum Wage is about.

They are attempting to save Social Security and Medicare. The ACA did not work out so well to GENERATE REVENUE.

They are DESPERATE. The Federal Unemployment Insurance Fund is tapped out, is broke and is depleted. Medicare and Social Security is heading in that direction of insolvency rapidly.

The Federal Reserve Bank is approaching insolvency.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

That is what this is about.

Until the Washington political party becomes two parties again with an opposition party (it could have been the Republican Party), then the Marxist who is president of the United States will use his voter-mob support to march through every constitutional protection of the American middle class.

Private property, freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, equal justice under the law, fair taxation -- all will fall to the “I have a pen and I don’t need the legislature” president. And make no mistake, a universal raise in the minmum wage is the major catalyst for heavy inflation and monetization of the debt, as in transfers of hard-earned money from citizens A to citizens B.

In truth, these words and actions are from Barack Obama but really come from the newest addition to the Administration, John Podesta. Wrote Mike Dorning on December 19, 2013 in Podesta’s Push for Executive Power Raises Stakes on Obama Agenda:

“When the Republican victory in the 2010 midterm election raised the prospect of political gridlock, John Podesta was ready with an answer: The president should bypass Congress and wield the executive powers of his office.

“Less than two weeks after the returns came in, Podesta had compiled 47 pages of proposals for unilateral action on issues from immigration to solar energy. President Barack Obama’s ability to ‘accomplish important change through these powers should not be underestimated,’ he wrote.

“Now, Podesta’s appointment as counselor to Obama adds a strong promoter of that strategy to the president’s inner circle as Republicans stand in the way of the White House agenda.”

Continued Dorning: “Among the proposals Podesta forwarded to Obama three years ago as head of the Center for American Progress, a research group with close ties to the administration, were a $2-per-barrel fee on imported oil to finance clean-energy projects, solar panels for Air Force hangars and curbs on detention of undocumented immigrants without criminal record…

“’He’ll be preaching to the choir in this administration,’ said Bruce Reed, who worked with Podesta as Clinton’s chief domestic policy adviser and until recently was Vice President Joe Biden’s chief of staff.

“Under the theme ‘We Can’t Wait,’ the White House started a series of executive actions before the 2012 election, including an order to stop deporting undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, if they have no criminal record. Unable to win passage of a gun-control bill, Obama announced moves on firearms using his presidential authority earlier this year.

A number of EOs have been promulgated over the last few years duplicating the Enabling Act of NAZI Germany. These EOs only require Activation by the Chief Executive at his discretion. They actually make the Executive the Sole Authority of Power within the US.

You should have stopped the BushCo administration. More power was given/ transfered to the Executive Branch than ever before. Google it, but I know you won't because you already know I didn't bullshit.  It started when BuchCo was given authority to go to war with Iraq if he felt it was necessary, and with "911 !" the move was on. Congress sheds itself of any responsibility when they give more power to the Executive Branch. I said at the time that the next President and all Presidents after would be able to wield those powers too. I guess the wingers thought They would always be in power. Obama didn't miss a beat and neither will the next POTUS.

Yes.

It’s a mistake to think that Barack Obama’s increased use of executive orders is coming from the White House. Now it’s coming from White House counselor John Podesta but the major force of these ideas are coming from the international bankers. They are running Obama like he’s some sort of trick pony.

They have put a bridle on him and they are leading him around by the nose.

He was raised by Marxists, he was taught by Marxists; his church was a Marxist church. That’s who he is. That's who put him in office and that’s from whom he's taking orders.

Raise the minimum wage, give everyone at least 2 weeks holiday a year, and bring in single payer health care. The capitalists might have a few bucks less, but they will still have their heads.

If not, bring on the revolution. The imbalance has to resolved one way or the other

Crony capitalism isn't free market capitalism; it is fascism, i.e., socialism with a dictator. Should the USA fall under the totalitarian fist of full Marxism, the US dollar will go the way of the USSR ruble – it will become a trading stamp as in food stamp.

“The economy of the Soviet Union was a government-controlled planned economy, where the government controlled prices and the exchange of currency. Thus, its role was unlike that of a currency in a market economy, because distribution of goods was controlled by other mechanisms than currency, such as centrally planned quotas, queuing or blat. Only a limited set of products could be freely bought, thus the ruble had a role similar to trading stamps or food stamps. The currency was not internationally exchangeable and its export was illegal. The sudden transformation from a Soviet "non-currency" into a market currency contributed to the economic hardship following the collapse of the Soviet planned economy.-- Wikipedia

You have no freaking idea what capitalism is. If you did you would recognize that we live in a corporatist state. If we had a capitalist system we would have had multiple failed institutions back in 2008. Instead the countries real owners forced bail outs and the last semblance of any relatively free markets were gone.

I hope he does do this, because you will quickly see just how far that raise won't go once companies raise prices and more small businesses go under.

In case anyone wasn't paying attention.

http://www.westernfreepress.com/2014/01/16/in-yesterdays-cabinet-meeting...

As we reported, Americans yesterday were treated to one of those rare moments when the kimono is opened and the mask drops. Obama admitted, openly, that he plans to double-down on his extra-legal activities. This came as no surprise to many of us, though it should still shock and enrage all of us . . . and if you did not yet read or hear it, you should.

But today, I want to point out something else that he said in the same cabinet meeting. It caught my eye, and sickened my heart, the instant I saw it. He said,

“So one of the things that I’m going to be talking to my Cabinet about is how do we use all the tools available to us, not just legislation, in order to advance a mission that I think unifies all Americans — the belief that everybody has got to take responsibility, everybody has got to work hard, but if you do, that you can support a family and meet the kinds of obligations that you have to yourself and your family but also to your communities and to your nation,”

If you hear that last part of the last line and think that it sounds innocuous enough, you’re not taking into account Obama’s ideological beliefs and pedigree. Obama is not merely making some bland statement about “giving back.” This is not community-spirit pablum. This is an expression of Obama’s holistic view of man’s relationship to the state.

To Obama—as to many totalitarians who have come before—the State is in charge.  Some people are wards of the state, and others are required to provide for the state’s needs.  All people owe their obedience to the state. A person’s rights are not his own, but are contingent upon the state’s provision of the rights it decides he gets to have. It is the state, not the individual, who is sovereign. All individuals are components of the collective, and all activities are within the state’s jurisdiction and purview.

And if you didn’t hear that in Obama’s statement about your “obligations . . . . to your nation,” you should have. Obama’s “holistic” view of man’s relationship to the state undergirds his thinking, and was the foundation and motivation for the statement. It was not an exhortation to be active in the civil society; it was a reminder: Remember who is in charge. Remember that your labor is not your own. Remember—you owe us, and we will come and collect any time we like.

Also as a reminder from one Milton Friedman in  ”Capitalism and Freedom”

In a much quoted passage in his inaugural address, President Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” Neither half of the statement expresses a relation between the citizen and his government that is worthy of the ideals of free men in a free society. The paternalistic “what your country can do for you” implies that government is the patron, the citizen the ward, a view that is at odds with the free man’s belief in his own responsibility for his own destiny. The organismic, “what you can do for your ‘country” implies the government is the master or the deity, the citizen, the servant or the votary.  To the free man, the country is the collection of individuals who compose it, not something over and above them. He is proud of a common heritage and loyal to common traditions. But he regards government as a means, an instrumentality, neither a grantor of favors and gifts, nor a master or god to be blindly worshipped and served. He recognizes no national goal except as it is the consensus of the goals that the citizens severally serve. He recognizes no national purpose except as it is the consensus of the purposes for which the citizens severally strive.

The free man will ask neither what his country can do for him nor what he can do for his country. He will ask rather “What can I and my compatriots do through government” to help us discharge our individual responsibilities, to achieve our several goals and purposes, and above all, to protect our freedom?  And he will accompany this question with another: How can we keep the government we create from becoming a Frankenstein that will destroy the very freedom we establish it to protect?

Anyone see the parallels between both here?

Good analysis.  It would be a good thing for the world if it was only Obama doing this as Americans will only let it go so far.  However, look around, these moves are being made all over the developed world, in Europe, in Japan, in Central Asia.  It is so pervasive, even Americans are appluading acts by China and Russia which, in years past, would have, at most, merely raised an eyebrow.

The Statist, Tricky Dick Clinton honored them for this great concept. How to enslave millions of people, and have them feel entitled to it.  So when the time comes, they point out the business owners, the farmers, etc.  Except the corporations (which work with the government to make our fine rules).

So we have Hitler's economic system, and Mussolini's government structure.

Thankfully nothing can go wrong with this situation!

Sit back and laugh.

So corporations are going to send jobs offshore? They've already done that. If 49 states don't have Wall Street, New York state doesn't need Wall Street either. Shut down Wall Street. Well, it isn't quite as scary as the headline indicates as it only affects Federal contractors.  Many of these contractors have other business so they can just give up the government business and concentrate on the private stuff.  That would be fine with me.  Some 'businesses' who only sell to the government will, of course, ask the government for more money (and get it).  They will also get the government 'business' that other contractors give up.  The net effect might be to reduce the number of businesses with both government contracts and private business.  That will divide the nation as government contractors get a free ride and non-government businesses don't. Such division might be a good but unintended consequence.

It sure is amazing when one considers all these different countries and political systems were all created to pit against each other for profits and death. Almost like inventing new chess pieces to enter the game with a better ever morphing and dwindling advantage, but then suddenly from the depths of sadism, kills that which they created, and two seconds ago loved.

Any thing that does this to a planet of innocent beings will deserve the punishment that is coming. The world they envision and plan for, is not what will be. The money god will die. Follow if one chooses to...the course is well known. You can only serve one master. You serve the master of the flesh/material, or you serve the Master of the Spiritual Kingdom. Each carries it's weight of Karma and opposite reactions from which there is NO escape. What goes around, comes around. Here we go again. Choose well, and serve well, you gotta serve somebody.:

There is no minimum wage in Switzerland, but there is a strong sense of community: if we all go for the cheapest products and lowest wages we'll find ourselves in a race to the bottom. This is why there is an unofficial minimum wage, which even large supermarket chains stick to. It's around $4000 a month, and that works well for everyone.

Compared to the price level (rent, food etc) that provides a reasonable living wage, which you need to have a stable economy.

It's not the level of the wage that counts but what it buys.   Is it actually an increase? Or is it an attempt to restore wage levels (and thus spending and thus tax revenues)  to where they were 5 years ago?

In the UK our government is recommending a rise in our minimum wage from £6.31 to £7.00 later this year in the full knowledge that the entire workforce will need a raise of around 7% to maintain parity and will in turn demand it.

The picture in the article says it all. What else do you need? The O is a fucking Marxist, his supporters are Marxist. The question will become: do you support the Red army or the White army, ala 1917?

People are calling him a socialist.  We can quibble about the definitions perhaps, but O is a fascist....clear and simle  He is becoming a version of Hitler and Mussolini.
