Hacked CNN Reports "China Dumps All US Bonds"

Tyler Durden's picture

It's one thing for the Comedy News Network formerly known as CNN to announce the opposite verdict on Obamacare as breaking news or that the TV studio formerly known as the NYSE is under 3 feet of water (based on what it saw on Twitter). It's something else entirely for it to report that China has declared semi-hot war on the US (unless of course CNN is merely reporting tomorrow's news today).

This is a cached version of a CNN website that appeared one short hour ago.

Luckily this time it was merely a a hack, as can be seen by the "article's" subsequent deletion from the live page and CNN's mea culpa:

  • CNN SAYS SOME OF ITS SOCIAL MEDIAL ACCOUNTS WERE COMPROMISED
  • CNN SAYS COMPROMISED ACCOUNTS INCLUDE TWITTER PAGE, FACEBOOK

But perhaps more telling is the complete lack of market response to even the hacked article, so different to the AP hack from last summer when the market plunged if only briefly following a hacked AP tweet. Just goes to show how irrelvant the once upon a time only news network has become.

if this were true, it would be the black swan and wwiii all at the same time.  our politicians would blame every last travesty of the last 30 years on those sneaky chinese communist.  they would probably blow up one of our own carriers just to get all the chest thumpin red blooded murkins behind them.

Why would it be a currency devaluation?

The Chinese have, say, $1 trillion in US Treasuries. They sell them, the Fed creates $1 Trillion USD, trades them for the treasuries. China still has the same amount of assets, the total in circulation money supply stays the same, the only change is that the Fed's balance sheet expands $1 trillion.

First of all you are assuming an orderly sale and only a sale of a trillion dollars. The fed would have to absorb more than just China's bonds. Secondly who says China would want the dollars? If they are going to dump the bonds they aren't going to accept dollars in exchange. And finally if the fed could get away with that, why don't they expand there balance sheet to 17 trillion right now and absorb all U.S debt? Because they can't. The only reason they can get away with what they are doing now is because we have the reserve currency to export our inflation, and all purchases are orderly.

These notes transact in dollars.  If they want something else for them, they are free to find some willing buyer somewehere else.  They might get what, 60 cents on the dollar then?

This is the secondary and not primary market we are talking about.  It doesn't have to be orderly. Sure, confidence will take a hit, but not much else.

Sure, confidence will take a hit, but not much else.

Is it confidence that backs a Currency as the US Dollar? The reason that people take US Dollars as a payment is because of Confidence.

They have confidence that someone else will take them as a payment. The confidence is the FOUNDATION of the transaction.

If confidence takes a hit then people will not be willing to accept the Currency as a payment for Goods and Services. So PRICES RISE RAPIDLY in order to pay for the risk.

The MAIN CAUSE of a Hyperinflationary Event is the LACK OF CONFIDENCE in the VALUE, the Purchasing Power, of a Currency.

Currency, the Physical Currency, may be in Short Supply. Actually it will be and it matters not. If people do not believe that they can trade it to another for Goods and Services then the VALUE of the Currency declines precipitously.

A Government responds by printing more Physical Currency in higher denominations to satisfy the rise in prices. This does not serve to alleviate the problem and serves to exacerbate it as the Death Spiral magnifies in scale. Once the process starts, and the negative feedback cycle has crystalized, there is no stopping it from the final outcome.

There was a LACK OF CURRENCY at the beginning of the Weimar Republic Germany Hyperinflation. In fact the lack was so profound that people began to write their own promissory scrip.

Likewise the Bank Closures and Bank Holidays, as a result of such a Bond Dump, would cause a lack of Physical Currency in the Market. People will begin to write their own scrip in the hopes of the return to Normalcy.

Believe it or not I have read that in Alaska, when there was a lack of Currency, that people began floating Open Checks as Currency. This behavior is well documented. Just because Banks close does not mean that people stop needing Goods and Services. They will make do with what they have.

Yes Confidence takes a hit. But the CONSEQUENCES ARE DISASTEROUS.

Not much else??? You must be out of your mind.

No, you silly goose!

This means that you should by U.S. Treasuries!  But, so that you are not the least bit inconvenienced, your thoughtful and caring Government has decided to make the purchases for you.  They will just swap them into your 401K and IRA accounts while you sleep or happily sit dazed in front of your television while watching<insert sports game or reality TV show here>.  See, that was painless, wasn't it?  And now, you're not burdened with those other pesky investments that could lose their value (unlike our AA rated bonds!).

Was running through some tax stuff for my girlfriend and she wanted to know what options she had for her refund if she gets one.  One of the choices was Savings Bonds.  I just started laughing and thought what are you fuckin kidding me they are going to give you a refund on something they will default on.

Then I thought I'm surprised they have not yet pushed the sheeple into receiving a portion of their refund in UST.

They are going to default on US Dollars at some point in time as well.

Liquidity is about the only benefit of taking that tax refund in US Dollars...the sooner...the better.

In fact it may make better sense to owe the IRS a little bit at the end and take US Dollars when you are paid, and not let the Treasury hold those Debtor's Notes for an average 6 months.  You are losing out on the Purchasing Power of roughly 3.5% on aveerage if you believe the Shadowstats Inflation Rate.

Advice, Go for one ounce gold coin made in the last few years to avoid later 'assay' charges that you might have with some bulion. Avoid sales ptiches that push you toward rare old 'pneusmatic' 'investment' gold coins. Look for low markup above the spot price of gold.  Google the name of the gold coin source you select and look for problems. Don't show off your gold stack to friends. My favorite is American buffalo 24 carrot one ounce. I prefer the 5 by 5 coin sheets. Keep in a safety deposit box until the dollar fiat becomes shakey. Get a commitment for delivery date. Hope this helps.

china can't just dump their bonds, without doing serious damage to the value. in stock market terms they need a block trade, (repatriot?) which is a dirty word. you can repatriot your bonds if you are a foreign holder, but the damage to the currency exchange would be difficult, and the US is ready to devalue the dollar, (i think)  but mostly on THEIR OWN TERMS< WE ALWAYS WANT IT ON OUR OWN TERMS. china has bought gold, the bitchez. we can't be sure if they bought physical or promissary notes. too bad. i still want to own it,. even if the Chinese have it and are not playing this game real well

Yes they can. It will destroy the vaue of those Bonds. But it will destroy the Derivatives Markets also. There would be an instant Credit Freeze. Every single Financial Institution in the USA would collapse. The Interest Rate Spike would be unprecedented as the market attempted to clear the Surplus of Bonds on the Open Market.

The US Dollar and the World Economy would be destroyed and it would be an act of overt WAR. That is how World War III can open.

All wars are Economic. All of them without exception. Ideology or Religion is the excuse.

The u.s. is actively monetizing it's debt, just on the fed side almost 4 trillion. We PROMISED the chinese we would not do this to their substantial holdings. I love the country I grew up in, U.S. 1960's. We are no longer that country. Moral reletivism has replaced right and wrong, and there is always a right and wrong. As a youngster our family had some hard times, We knew hunger, but never went to the food bank for dried milk and cheese because we had pride, That and the knowledge that there were those who were truly needy. I have lived my entire life as a man of my word, because to do otherwise would besmerch my honor, and without honor we are nothing. In my 53 yrs I have seen our country decend to the level of a third world shithole. Our elected representatives now represent only themselves. I have allied Myself and family with a group of like-minded indiviguals, we have banded together to keep an ember of Americas greatness alive.

The Chinese, in good faith took our promise that we would honor our obligations. And we in return have lied and cheated them. I do not care for the Chinese political system which brutalizes its citizens. But we gave our word, alas our once great nation is now run and mostly populated by liers, cheats and thieves. What once made us the exception in the world has been lost, and the world is a much poorer place with its passing.

Quaint old farts with honour are a thing of the past my friend ...

If gov takes their money in return for a bond (that is backed by the full faith of USA ) how on earth is it an act of war for them to want to redeem them?  Are they supposed to just buy bonds but never redeem them ?  Why does China or anyone else buy them in the first place if they know they can't redeem them at will ? A reasonable person would have expected China (and Japan) to threaten to dump the second the USA started printing their savings into oblivion ... 10 trillion later and nary a bump ?

Crazy stuff.

It was an act of War that the United States created them and sold those Bonds in the first place. Borrowing without the intent to repay is an act of STEALING THROUGH FRAUD. It is IMMORAL.

The Massive Dumping would be an overt response to the act of War. America would respond by escalating from an Economic War to a Hot War. I am not declaring that the response would be Moral but that is the expected reaction.

Honor is not a Past Relic but is that which needs be aspired to and applied if there is to be any hope of restoring confidence in that which has currently proven itself to be unworthy.

Moral Hazard has been replaced by Moral Relativism and that is what has lead us to the point of the deserved impending doom.

The youngsters just do not understand and in that we have failed to teach them the prudence and just behaviors needed for a civil existence.

I find it deeply disturbing that unwitting ordinary people are being manipulated, all for their trust in the powers that be, whether that is politics, finance or media.

The USA is the only country founded on principles of individual responsbility that makes genuine, respectful community; a meritocracy.

The Old World Order hates that, and conspires against it, led by the international financiers and monarchy. They are now shifting their money from West to East under their 'globalization', their new feudalism.

End the Fed. End the monarchy.

Gold smuggling into India is so massive that government duty is effectively worthless.

“A duty cut is not going to provide any major relief to jewellers as restrictions have not really reduced the gold appetite of Indians. Import has lowered only on government books. Gold is being smuggled. Hence, a duty cut is not going to serve any purpose. The government must relax the 80:20 rule,” said Daljeet Kohli, head, research, IndiaNivesh Securities. The duty is 10 per cent.

Ok,

I read it carefully, I did not see ONE contrarian thought,

What I saw was a guy saying over and over "This is how I thought things would wind up", but always stating the obvious,

Please state how this guy is a contrarian, also notable he's a BUSH basher, and so what BUSH is out, and what he's says about OBAMA is very little.

He makes the USA sound like a paper tiger, ... but no where does he mention 'drones'

He says that all of the middle east wars are of "THEIR" own, making totally ignoring the fact that they're all engineered by CIA.

This guy  is a 100% NSA/CIA WHORE for the USA, to spread bullshit in EUROPE.

He is not bashing anybody in particular except Pax Americana dominance. Its the long term trend he addresses. Those ME wars are engineered to protect the oil patch; nothing else.

Admittedly he does not go into the energy thread analysis as its not his strong suit. (Demographics and social contract, aka labour competitive advantage logic and trade offs is where he concentrates.)

Don't get into ad hominen logic, think big picture of geopolitcs.

He is contrarian to European elites stance on Euro. His explanation of economic protectionist trends is interesting iMO, particularly in relationship to transcontinental free trade type agreements hoisted by PAx Americana on surrogates.

He projects an alternative role for US power plays called "soft power" in the coming years, as opposed to current NWO neo con military sterile games.

satoshi101, why should we europeans care if there is a Bush or an Obama in the Oval Office? on the other side, we have reasons to be concerned about US policies, which do have effects on us. get a grip, man. for someone claiming to live in rural China you show an incredible lack of cultural understanding

read again this paragraph: "When Bush was in power, Americans became -- by pretending to be so militarily powerful -- completely repulsive. But as soon as they admit that their power is waning, people on the periphery of the empire can start worrying about a world without the U.S. Army. And what they imagine is not very pleasant. Once the U.S. acknowledges that it is not the ruler of the world, once it acts reasonably, then many, many nations will realize that they need the U.S. This is the paradox."

remember, it's a French perspective. to which he adds

"Once the U.S. admits this, the decline in America's hard economic and military power will produce a rise in its soft power."

Let's put it this way...All European Banks would be insolvent overnight. You would have an instant freeze on all Capital Markets. Bank Holidays would be declared immediately. They would not open the Markets as people will panic and liquidate everything.

It would be an instant and total chaos. If I read that news I would go to the Bank and get as much cash as I possibly could get.

That is what I' thinking ... but would it stay that way ? In other words if the USD goes 'pop' is there a fundamental mechanism that will take the EUR, GBP, JPY (maybe that one is going 'pop' on its own) with it ?

Is it due to the "interlinkedness" of all financancial products where doubt on one will immediately cast doubts (justified or not but there is no time to check it out) on other ones ? Or is it more fundamental ?
