I could easily and was shocked no one else knew what was wrong with the reporting of this event. This was in 1979 so the dumbing down was occurring long ago.

Here's insight from someone who worked as a "sandwich artist" for a few months. (really, that's what they are/used to be called)
- The lettuce arrives pre-cut in bags.
- GMO tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and onions arrive by the produce box as necessary. These are the only things cut in store.
- Meats come frozen - they are thawed and weighed out into portions as per the meat.
- Tuna/mayo paste is mixed in-house.
- Bread comes frozen. It is thawed, primed overnight, and baked in the morning. A foot-long bread starts out as a 6-inch frozen stick.
- Cookies are baked in-house.
- Everything else I haven't mentioned is pre-packaged.
Food inspector comes once a month. All produce and meat containers get dates on masking tape. Gotta be today's date when the inspector comes. Can be yesterday's date otherwise (carrying over last night's stuff).
The bread is the worst - don't eat Subway bread.
