Where The Homeless Are (And Are Not)

Tyler Durden's picture

With food-stamp recipients dominated by 'working age Americans' for the first time in history; and 1.4 million having recently dropped off the benefits rolls, we suspect, extremely sadly, that the following breakdown of homelessness in America is about to get worse. Los Angeles has by far the greatest number of unsheltered homeless in America and New York City the largest population - at around 65,000 - of homeless people in the US. One wonders at the State of the Union tomorrow...

Via Vizual-Statistix,

The PIT estimates are based on counts of all sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on a single night

...

Those who are identified as “unsheltered” live in places not meant for human habitation, such as streets, vehicles, parks, campgrounds, abandoned buildings, etc.

In general, the number of homeless people tracks population density, so the upper map shows homeless persons per 1,000 state population.

The top states are HI, NY, CA, and OR, though these are all less than half the per capita tally in DC.

Had I used raw counts of homeless people (without normalizing by population), CA would have had the highest value at 137,000. The next highest counts are NY (77,000) and FL (48,000).

The balance of sheltered and unsheltered is largely influenced by climate; more extreme climates found in the northern and eastern parts of the country have lower percentages of unsheltered homeless people. ND is an exception to this trend – it has approximately 2,000 homeless people, two-thirds of whom are unsheltered.

Woah, woah.  And here I thought Baltimore was terrble.  I was going to make a comment about it earlier this evening, but I'm glad this article showed up so I wouldn't have to be off-topic.

Today I went a route that I normally don't take anymore, but I remember between 9 and 13 months ago I posted frequently about seeing an increase in homeless populations.  The number/frequency of homeless females I'm seeing is going up.  Number/Frequency of homeless whites going up.  Haven't seen any children out there yet.

Oh, and not everyone is sheltered.  That solid gold and no blue is crap.  Also, Hawaii?  Half a percent?

this vile blood thirsty nation spends trillions on wars of foreign aggression, to murder and terrorize people for no good reason than it wants oil and gold to line its bollinger soaked cuffs, and yet it all fits as it treats people in this country like animals...

tony,

My town has homeless people.

It also has a homeless shelter with empty beds.

When the local news people ask the homeless about this, the usual answer is that the homeless shelter has 'rules' including curfews, requirements to keep oneself and one's space 'clean,' and not to fight with others and behave oneself.

They don't like to live with 'rules.'

Hard to believe San Francisco isn't top of the list. Never have I seen so many homeless people. It's seems to be an acceptable lifestyle out here. There are hundreds of shitty campers parked everywhere with people living in them. San Francisco even has a program to give homeless people free dogs! Mind Blown.

Here in Toronto, Canada, panhandler agressiveness varies.  Personally, I'm more concerned with regards to the squeegy-kids that come by at traffic stops when I'm sitting in my car.  They wouldn't dare do anything to me, but my poor car :(

I once witnessed a real agressive panhandler.  Dude was standing on a corner at St LawerenceMarket holding a styrofoam coffee cup asking for spare change.  A college aged student dropped some change in this guys cup as he passed by.  I watched this.  The panhandler looked into his cup and in a fit of anger started yelling at the kid who gave him the change.  The panhandler yelled out to him "What the fuck is this shit????"  He proceeded to dump the change from the cup into his one hand.  It looked to be a bunch of pennies, nickles, and dimes.  The kid looked back astonished and asked "What, you don't want my change????".  The panhandler yelled out "I don't want this fucking useless crap!!!" at which point he proceeded to hurl all of the change at the kid.  If that wasn't enough, the panhandler advanced on the kid and was threatening to punch him.  The kid raised his arm in defence, backed off and walked away.  The panhandler walked back to the corner as if nothing happened and started asking for change again.  I guess one of the ladies near me gave him a dirty look as he exclaimed to her "What the fuck are you looking at bitch!!!!!".

Fuck the homeless!

many panhandlers have mental issues - can all be cured, but there's no business and government handouts in curing people.

if this were a full blown confrontation, cops, fire, ambulance would get involved - perhaps charges laid - courts, court admin, lawyers and then the rehab business - more government paid for bullshit

so yes, fuck the homeless - hope they off themselves, because a cure will never be allowed by the nazi's that run government

I have to say I have seen it both ways. I have tried to help poor people who would do nothing when offered help such as college tuition assistance to improve their lives. And I have seen people who are truly destitute and need food and shelter.

I make peace with the massive needs of the poor by budgeting a portion of my paycheck to go to the poor and I have it go through a volunteer organization where 100% of the funds are used to sustain life and/or help people become self sufficient. Someday as I get better at earning a living I hope to be able to give much more to the poor- but honestly I don't feel sorry for those who are unwilling to improve their situation.

I camped along the entire west coast last summer. All the homeless I met were substance abusers, without exception. Many were vets. Some were walking time bombs.

But they all had a story, and mostly were not much different from ZHers; malcontents, super opinionated, anti gov, fiercely independent.

Many spent their monthly disability pmts in two weeks on booze or pot or whatever, and then spend 2 weeks dumpster diving or panhandling. The tweekers are to be avoided at all costs.

They are very humane to the homeless up in Victoria, but there are some seriously dangerous guys in norcal and SF. They seem to let them take over Market street in SF. Some of them have lost their humanity.

San Diego looked to be homeless paradise in the beautiful parks they have there.

Some people, its their own fault.

Some, not.  I live in rural Wisconsin and my county is considered poor.  I have friends with small children who work, but barely scrape by.  There are retirees, who live on a fixed income.  When propane goes from a little over a dollar a unit to over five bucks, people's lives are ruined.  That's not their fault.  I wonder how many more empty houses will populate the area.

Its very sad here right now.

And cold.  -25 as I type.

It's a change most decent, reading comments by regulars 'round here: Switch-aroo from econ cipher stations to stories of many doing the kinetic quelling the inevitable "Umph" felt when eyeballing a homeless someone. Selective/clustering bias or something; the seemingly endless comments on many forums, post after post about the gazillion entitled "I saw and even seen all these fat fucks using mytitlements buyin' Cheetos and playstation-Cheetos. Lazy. Mother. God damn. Shits

Weasel word worst. No denying of welfare state here, it's shit however to engage in their amicus 'murica divisive prattle.

I'm outta touch. Many of us are (or vice versa) cuz it's not believable, the parroting of reason-abily people gushing out the liberal-goppy stuff. Again and more. Yes, it's choir rubbing/wake me up @ 500$ up day/meh, I'm not not guilty of 'meh' but

Mehhhhh!

The race vs race vs class class shat out of every paper/poli/media/here-say for centuries=the bad guys win.

This may sound ridiculous but whatevers: since the 2010, I've been (gotta try something right?) going to the inner city (hint: every 2-3 years gets the most murders per/cap award) approaching dudes who for all intents and purposes could 1. Kill me with many things 2. See 1. Leftovers from bloods/crips, reorganized- same shit more fractured (by blocks, not flag). Why? To (don't laugh or do) tell whoevers' listening a short version of the fed-banks, the big lie, the uniparty- those stuffs- most important though is telling "them" what "they" (libertarians/un hijacked tea-partiers) think, using Ron Paul's words as a bench.

I do the same thing and feel at least as scared going to a tea-party after church meeting doing the same thing, but I'll bring along one of "them"with me so "they" can spark and see in the flesh up close each other with eyeballs. No screen.

It sucks- none of my friends will help, so a solo deal in a 3+ million pop. conurbation.

It's hard, outta those years real connections are rare but what else can I do (don't answer that!). The few genuine unhat-unmcoy turn outs have been spectacular to see though.

(I wish I had recorded it first breakthrough

..one time I ended up at a section 8 pile o junk, full of ex cons and a few others who I didn't know. After an hour of talking about music and movies, there were a group of very serious dudes and a pro to boot huddled around my dumb iPhone totally watching Ron Paul vids from YouTube. With the king cobra 40z and all. It was worth much more then a few Au Buffalos.

(another note: this pissed me off. I tried the same thing with early occupy types and tea party types. That was a 100% failure)
