32 Alarming Facts Missing From Obama's State Of The Union Address

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of The Economic Collapse blog,

Show this article to anyone that believes that the economy has actually improved under Barack Obama.  On Tuesday evening, the President once again attempted to convince all of us that things have gotten better while he has been in the White House.  He quoted a few figures, used some flowery language and made a whole bunch of new promises.  And even though he has failed to follow through on his promises time after time, millions upon millions of Americans continue to believe him

In fact, you can find a list of 82 unfulfilled promises from his previous State of the Union addresses right here.  Soon we will have even more to add to that collection.

At this point, you have to wonder if Obama even believes half the stuff that he is saying.  Of course it is extremely unlikely that he is going to come out and admit that he has failed and that he has been lying to us this whole time, but without a doubt the gap between reality and what he is saying to the public is becoming ridiculously huge.  To say that his credibility is "strained" would be a massive understatement.  No, things have not been getting better in America.  In fact, they continue to get even worse.  The following are 32 statistics that Obama neglected to mention during the State of the Union address...

#1 According to a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, only 28 percent of all Americans believe that the country is moving in the right direction.

#2 In 2008, 53 percent of all Americans considered themselves to be "middle class".  In 2014, only 44 percent of all Americans consider themselves to be "middle class".

#3 In 2008, 25 percent of all Americans in the 18 to 29-year-old age bracket considered themselves to be "lower class".  In 2014, an astounding 49 percent of them do.

#4 Right now there is approximately a billion square feet of vacant retail space in the United States.

#5 There are 46.5 million Americans that are living in poverty, and the poverty rate in America has been at 15 percent or above for 3 consecutive years.  That is the first time that has happened since 1965.

#6 Barack Obama says that the unemployment rate has declined to 6.7 percent, but if the labor force participation rate was at the long-term average it would actually be approximately 11.5 percent, and it has stayed at about that level since the end of the last recession.

#7 While Barack Obama has been in the White House, the number of Americans on food stamps has gone from 32 million to 47 million.

#8 While Barack Obama has been in the White House, the percentage of working age Americans that are actually working has declined from 60.6 percent to 58.6 percent.

#9 While Barack Obama has been in the White House, the average duration of unemployment in the United States has risen from 19.8 weeks to 37.1 weeks.

#10 While Barack Obama has been in the White House, social benefits as a percentage of real disposable income has risen from about 17 percent to nearly 21 percent.

#11 While Barack Obama has been in the White House, the rate of homeownership in the United States has fallen to levels that we have not seen in nearly two decades.

#12 While Barack Obama has been in the White House, median household income in the United States has fallen for five years in a row.

#13 While Barack Obama has been in the White House, the average cost of a gallon of gasoline has gone from $1.85 to $3.27.

#14 At the end of Barack Obama's first year in office, our yearly trade deficit with China was 226 billion dollars.  Now it is over 300 billion dollars.

#15 Workers are taking home the smallest share of the income pie that has ever been recorded.

#16 Sadly, 1,687,000 fewer Americans have jobs today compared to exactly six years ago even though the population has grown significantly since then.

#17 One recent study found that about 60 percent of the jobs that have been "created" since the end of the last recession pay $13.83 or less an hour.

#18 Only 47 percent of all adults in America have a full-time job at this point.

#19 It is hard to believe, but an astounding 53 percent of all American workers make less than $30,000 a year.

#20 The Obama years have been absolutely brutal for small businesses.  According to economist Tim Kane, the following is how the number of startup jobs per 1000 Americans breaks down by presidential administration...

Bush Sr.: 11.3

Clinton: 11.2

Bush Jr.: 10.8

Obama: 7.8

#21 You can still buy a house in the city of Detroit for just one dollar.

#22 The U.S. cattle herd is at a 61 year low.

#23 It is being projected that health insurance premiums for healthy 30-year-old men will rise by an average of 260 percent under Obamacare.

#24 According to the most recent numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, an all-time record 49.2 percent of all Americans are receiving benefits from at least one government program each month.

#25 When Barack Obama was first elected, the U.S. debt to GDP ratio was under 70 percent.  Today, it is up to 101 percent.

#26 The U.S. national debt is on pace to more than double during the eight years of the Obama administration.  In other words, under Barack Obama the U.S. government will accumulate more debt than it did under all of the other presidents in U.S. history combined.

#27 Right now, there are 1.2 million students that attend public schools in the United States that are homeless.  That number has risen by 72 percent since the start of the last recession.

#28 Only 35 percent of all Americans say that they are better off financially than they were a year ago.

#29 Only 19 percent of all Americans believe that the job market is better than it was a year ago.

#30 According to a recent CNN poll, 70 percent of all Americans believe that "the economy is generally in poor shape".

#31 According to a recent Pew Research survey, only 19 percent of all Americans trust the government.   Back in 1958, 73 percent of all Americans trusted the government.

#32 According to another poll that was recently released, 70 percent of all Americans do not have confidence that the government will "make progress on the important problems and issues facing the country in 2014."

These pathetic lists always have an urban, poor folk, lefty stink about them.  #19 is not at all hard to believe, unless you live in New York or LA.

They also lack context.  See #4.  A billion is a lot.  So is that 10%, 50%, somewhere in between?

Sometimes less is more.

I'm with you on this. It is a pathetic list that an educated person should be insulted by. Spare space, spare people, insufficient savings are all economic outcomes of ebusiness, ageing demographics and consumerism. Sure it's not pretty, but thats life and the US is simply getting a taste of what the rest of the world are enduring. Blaming this on Obama is simply offloading responsibility. I'm tried of hearing about the f**king poor, I had to pay my own way through college and currently work 14hrs 6 days a week to keep my little 6-figure salary competing against a bunch of mean mofo's that would slit my throat for my seat as soon as look at me. And to endure all this and then have to listen to a bunch of eaters whining to the government to raise my taxes in order to keep themselves in alcohol and medicines!!??  Don't f'ing insult me!!  I'm too old to keep listening to this crap.

Mr. Obama, you and your corrupt friends run up the debt of our once great country by giving away massive amounts of free shit in order to get elected.  Stop giving away my paycheck so that you can get elected and continue to fuck up our country with your idiot friends Pelosi, Reid and Holder (to name just a few).  Stop spending my savings account.  Stop putting my retirement account at risk so you can take care of your elite buddies who continue to pay you multi billion dollar fines of investor money while making huge paychecks and without ever being required to admit guilt (Corzine, Dimon, Blankfein, Mozillo, Fuld, Killinger, Rotella...). Stop bailing out dinosaurs  with my money that can't survive on their own.  Just fucking stop!!!  Please!

But the zombies just keep going forward. This nation (world?) is so f'ed up that it astounds the even minimally educated mind to realize just what a sh^thole central planning has given birth to. The more they (it) assumes control the worse this tragedy becomes and yet the meme de jour  is of course that free markets must be regulated and that planning will bring about all the good things lost so far.

Central planning is planning to fail......

It's what they intend to do once the failure becomes fully realized that ought to scare the shit out of normal people.

Best rant evah! I totally agree. Fining a publically traded company is just a form of Govt confiscation from the pensions and other retirement accounts and shareholders. It punishes the wrong person. Until the officers that approved the fraud lose their fat checks, jobs or go to jail the SEC, Justice Dept is rewardind the crooks and hurting the honest investor.

BTW, why do we continue having SOTU?  If there's one thing modern communications capabilities have made unnecessary,  I'd say SOTU is it.  I know it is constitutionally required, but it's not like we've bothered following any other constitutional directives in the last 50 years.

Actually, I believe I have read that the SOTU was typically delivered in writing by early Presidents who considered it to be too much like being a king and too much like the British to give a speech [speaking down] to Congress.  But, once TV came along . . . now what self-respecting politician is not going to take advantage of that opportunity!

Weak stomach
Don't have TV

That said, the few clips I watched reminded my of old Politburo speeches; the staging, the ridiculous clapping. Pathetic and spooky, really.

They know it's all a show, and they'll keep you laughing as you go...

You'll know there's a God if, during some SOTH an asteroid hits DC traveling about .1c.

There will be plenty of action in the form of Executive Orders, and not a single fucking one of them is going to benefit you or me. In fact, they will either 1. Take away or diminish our constitutional, God-given rights, or 2. Benefit the corporate/bankster elite in some shape or form. There is an agenda that's fairly plain to see if you step back and look at the big picture and connect a few dots. It's not a great mystery, they telegraph all the moves. Year of action. Executive Order action. Bet on it.

Fun facts, but very little here is really "alarming". Should be titled:  32 more indicators that the economy,as we already knew, was shrinking. If you really want alarming, how about: 32 things that we could do as a country to make GDP grow more than 3%. But that assumes that anyone in power actually wants the economy to grow.

Yes, Obama is a disgrace and a turncoat to the progressive base that first got him elected.

But he sure can deliver a speech.

We needed an FDR progressive and we got another Ronald Reagan.  Fuck!

I smell revolution in the air.

We need a clean out of Republican and Libertarians (that includes Obama).  It is high-time for government to work for the benefit of average consumers/workers, as opposed to carrying water for the rich corporate/financial industry parasites.

If it does not...if it continues to hold to the shallow idiotic, long-since-failed ideas of Utopian free-market forces, then I see the living standards falling rapidly.

And this could happen fast enough that uncontrollable events will start playing out.  Can you smell the gasoline on the air?

I guess I violated the narrative.

How you morons can think Obama is a "Socialist Liberal" is beyond me.  He's a corporatist crony capitalist thug in the style of Ronald Regan, Bill Clinton and George Bush the lesser.

I mean, GOD!  If only he was a FDR type!  We'd have been on the right track now going on 5years!

WAKE UP YOU DUNCES!

If we had an FDR-type Liberal instead of Obama then that person would have: 1) given the finger to the bankers and the defense contractors and the financial lobby and the Industrialists sending jobs to the cheapest destinations on the globe. 2) He'd have instituted targeted trade tariffs to bring back defense related industries and high tech businesses to create jobs and real security 3) he'd have gotten us out of Iraq and Afghanistan on day one...cutting our losses and pursued a purely drone/aerial death-from-above strategy 4) he'd have filled our prisons with the scumbag fraudsters of Wall street/Citi Group/Chase etc, 5) he'd have created a massive green-infrastructure program to employ nearly all the unemployed and thus driving up wages for everyone and driving up demand and stimulting the economy from the bottom up---the only way it has ever really been stimulated before.

Action's and data means everything, you muppets.  Words don't mean shit.

No,  you people have no business in investing your own money, much less some one else's.

Obama is not much of a social liberal, just call him a real progressive "strong man" who is adored by the progressive base that got him there.

You should find a new label.  Progressive has been taken.  They are firmly ensconced in power:  a friendly circle of govt bureaucrats, elected officials, fawning media talking heads, crony-banksters, crony-corporatists, surveillance statists, and militarists, headed up by Progressive-in-Chief Obama.  Protected by the Police State, their beloved enforcers.  It is not the 1%, it's like the 5% that are running the fucking country -- into the fucking ground -- for personal benefit -- the gang that believes it knows "what's best" for everyone else on the globe and has "granted" itself the power to plunder wealth and resources to spread around for favors, payoffs and votes.  Remember, corrupt government is democracy in action.

You should think twice about recommending more crony-corporatist green projects and wishing for more wasteful defense spending.  Stripping middle-class wealth to stimulate the MIC and the bank accounts of the politically connected is not creating jobs from the bottom up.  Think: Solyndra.  And Obama's hand-picked progressive advisers are notoriously interventionist and have no desire to reduce America's military footprint or cut back on Obama's drone bombing.  (You seem to have no problem with American war crimes as long as they are commited remotely -- what's up with that?)

FDR did just the opposite of some of the things you credit him for.  Ron Paul would fit the anti-bankster part of of your wishful thinking but you see how he has been demonized by social liberals, progressives and conservatives -- they all hate him.  Ralph Nader would stand up to the banksters, but you know what your social liberal/progressive crowd did to him-- they all hate him.

And you must be kidding about people having no business investing their own money.  You can't be suggesting that the State should grab it and "invest it for your own good".  Can you?

Finally, you sound like you yearn for an all-powerful, hyper-nationalistic warfare/welfare state (which requires the NSA-type of surveillance apparatus to support it), sort of a goose-stepping National Socialistic State?

Excellent rebuttal,

in all but one matter.

I must strongly disagree with your assertion that "corrupt government is democracy in action".

That comment, even if it were true (which it is not), has nothing to do with regard to the USA.

The US is not now a democracy.

Given government secrecy and disinformation, police state laws and martial policing,

privileged political parties, managed MSM news, undeclared 'wars', lobbyist corruption, etc.,

the USA is far from being even democratic in any significant or important way.

Thank you for your observation.  I was thinking about special-interest voting blocs, each out for a place at the govt trough, and often forming coalitions to share the (promised) loot.

Now, are the voters the main problem?  No, because the elections are rigged by the forces you mention. (Nonetheless, some of the voting blocs still have no problem with rigged elections as long as their candidate comes out on top.)

American politicians want to maintain the illusion of "democratic elections" from which they can claim a mandate to act for the benefit of the special interests of the day, year or decade.

The people who believe Obama is a socialist have the critical thinking skills of retarded chipmunks. Look at Obama's proposals in his SOTU address to increase employment: cut business taxes and approve trade agreements such as the TTP.

Yup, only on ZH can the policies designed to enrich the .0001% be confused with socialism.

Obama's policies are the same as Bush's, except he's slightly less of a warmonger, can string two words together without sounding like a retard, and he doesn't need the Vice President to wipe his ass for him.

 Obama is Bush on steroids.

But it hardly matters who is "slightly" better than the other.

They are both war criminals, human rights violators, and corrupt enablers of financial frauds.

To continue the meaningless mantra that one is slightly less worse than the other,

or that the other would have been even worse,

is to defend the indefensible,

and thereby promote its continuation.

I voted for him and it's still better than if the other guy would have been elected...as I think cut would have been worse for the middle class of which is where I am..at the low end of middle class.  The whole thing was more like a production I agree.  I have been tweeting of late that the entire marketing for the White House and the President has been targeted to reach the level of a 5th grader.  When I started getting pictures of a Presidential tea cup in emails from them, that was it..set me off.

Sure have some in there for 5th graders, but how about the adults and stop doing the dummy down routine..others do that and the pattern and part of the template was one that I recognized as I blogged it..the MasterCard model where you can be duped into believing you need as MasterCard "persona" from their wonderful "engagement bureau"..yeah cut the crap..if you read enough the human brain can see recognize patterns.  It's the same "get into your internet pants" that's over there.  I'm not going to sit there and send all kinds of stuff to folks off the White House page...it didn't used to be this way.

http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/12/mastercard-as-well-as-other-finan...

I keep telling everybody that bank and company proprietary code are becoming laws...code runs hog ass wild while the government can't get past the verbiage..

People can't tell the difference between the virtual worlds anymore...look at Perkins even..it's on that side too and Wall Street promotes it..Facebook found a new buddy, Barclays to promote getting people on the web in the UK, get more data out there to sell and teach a few to code..augh..you can see where this is going..I would watch for Facebook to find more bank buddies..

Bill Gates at least gives us a chance with using technology for tangibles.  The virtual world will totally win I guess when they have eating a Facebook like button for breakfast, which basically means I get to starve..it may sound stupid but its a big deal...

http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2014/01/world-economic-forum-needs-dose-o...

Gates was right back in November when he said getting people connected on the internet was bull shit..vaccines, food, toilets..you name it..more important, the real world..keep an eye out on Zuckerberg and see he buddies up with more banks..

In the meantime the White House template bot will have more in store for me soon...they got sucked in to the BS and as you may have noticed turnout to watch it was lowest n 10 years...

I was offered the same amount of money to manage a restaurant recently that I made managing a restaurant of similar size in 1983.  No inflation.  Sound dollar.  Whole world believes in the faith and credit of the USA.  I am not complaing just stating a truth.  We as a nation have been lied to and stolen from by the FIRE businesses for long enough.  I have a personal injury lawsuit with my own insurance company because it was a hit and run driver and falls under the uninsured/underinsured portion of my policy.  I was with that insurance company for 14 years and never paid a premium late.  Next month it will have been 4 years since the accident.  Left shoulder blown totally.  No golf.  No real swimming.  No picking up the 30 lb grandson.  Can't shoot the compound bow any more.  They have decided amongst their inhouse lawyers I am just fine.  4 years.  Tens of thousands of dollars in premiums for two vehichles and homeowners policies over the years.  F... ing crickets when they owe you money.  We have become a nation of belly button gazing,  facebook self centered,  sportstar worshipping bowls of spineless lying overweight blobs.  Each the center of their own hi tech universe.  Raised by a system of lying, thieving corporatist and political vermin.  I used to say God help us.  I no longer do.  To say I have had enough doesn't even merit a response.  There will come a day when men and women like me who have played by the rules,  paid every tax and then some,  looked the other way when the perverts in education decided that 3rd graders need sex education will have finally had enough.  That day is coming when what is called fly over country will be heard.  No one cares about size of the cattle herd?  No one cares there is no or little snow in the California mountains.  No one cares that a city cannot even handle 2 inches of snow without utter panic and chaos?  We are unsafe amongst ourselves.  Truth and common sense have left our country hand in hand and appear to be on a long journey.  I am at my word limit.  These words will only carry weight for those with eyes wide open.  I no longer say God help us but I pray that a day soon coming will cause all who hear and understand these words who have also stayed silent will with one voice rise up and say enough!

I'm sorry to say, ZH used to be an amusing somewhat interesting blog years ago, but it seems the pods and trolls have taken over the dialogue, as if all of the sudden Obama is now the great satan. Really? You're just now waking up to the fact that the whole system is a complete sham and what - it's all somehow Obama's fault? As if life was perfect prior to 2009? The shitstorm we now find ourselves in has been coming for decades, and both parties are pretty much equally responsible. It doesn't matter who sits in the oval office anymore, a small group of oligarchs have taken over our democracy.

To wit, you call the president the ‘food stamp’ president. MaoMart pays it’s employees so poorly that 65% if not more are on some form of public assistance - taxpayers are having to subsidize the employees of a multi-billion dollar corporation whose 6 family members possess more wealth than the bottom 150 million citizens of this country. I do not begrudge MaoMart’s wealth, but when they are amassing this wealth using my tax dollars to subsidize their employees because they won’t fork over a living wage, well, that’s not free market capitalism, that’s corporate socialism – and sorry, the president isn’t responsible for this atrocity. It was decades in the making. Our coin-operated politicians can’t hike their skirts up high enough for the corporate lobbyists and special interest groups (on behalf of our corporate overlords) that flood the halls of our government on a daily basis. We’re a plutocracy now, you just don’t know it yet.

So you can sit here day in and day out and bash the current president for everything under the sun that isn’t going the way you think it should go, so be it, ignorance is bliss as they say. But we are wasting precious time with all this petty bickering, meanwhile Rome burns. You’re part of the problem not part of the solution. It would be refreshing, if at the very least, you could identify the correct responsible party/s in your ‘bashing’ ceremonies.

Fine then end the unconstitutioanl food stamps program tomorrow. Problem solved.

Next? Perhaps you are starting to realize that we live in a nationalist socio-fascist coporatist police state. Every last Walmart emplyee CHOOSES to work there. If they have a problem with it they can go work somewhere else. This country, some corporation or even some wealthy individual OWES YOU NOTHING. Every day I work side ny side with people who bust their ass 40-50 hours a week making either min wage or juts above and they get it done. And that's in NYC which is about 100 times harder than any local with a Walmart. Living wage? What the fuck is a living wage? Are you the arbiter of that? Do the math sometime idiot. $20/hr is only 800/week BEFORE THE FUCKING GOVERNMENT TAKES THEIR CUT. Is THAT a "living wage".

Labor is nothing more than a commodity. Period. It is priced by the market. Food stamps and the like are market interventions that distort all prices.

While you rage against a single reatiler that tends to sell at a very low margin in areas that otherwise might not have such an outlet, companies such as Raytheon, Northrup Griumman, et al take tax dollars and build lavish killing machines at highly inflated prices to sell to you beloved government so that THIS PRESIDENT can murder innocent men, women, and children in far away places who are of absolutely NO THREAT TO ANY AMERICAN.

Sorry but THIS PRESIDENT IS RESPNSIBLE FOR THIS ATROCITY and should be tried as a war criminal along with anyone involved in such activities. Funny, I missed the place where you decried that. Have you checked you 401K lately? Perhaps your IRA is vested in a fund that plays in equities in companies like this. Oh, you're PROFITING through this activity?

And you're good with that?

And yes I will identify the responsible parties. EVery single President to ever hold office in my lifetime. Every government employee, every government parasite, ALL military members past and present. Anyone who takes a public pension. Anyone who takes Soc Sec. Every employee of the Federal Reserve, and any amployee, client, or investor in any member bank or financial institution to The Fed. Every last Supreme Court Justice who has ever served on the bench. Period. No exceptions. EVery last person who has EVER voted for any member of The Republican Party or The Democrat Party.

Shall I go one? Your missive about the bickering is worthless. Rome burns? LET IT FUCKING BURN TO THE GROUND.

Perhaps them we can rebuild it the way it was inetended. I don't want to be Rome. I want to be America.

The reason why Mr. Obama takes so much shit is beacuse he's the one in the hotseat right now. And he only continues to make the very same false promises and mistakes that each and every one of his predecessors made. Add to that he is a massmurdering, narcissist, sociopath who is not altogether that bright. He is nothing more that a demagogue. He deserves everything that comes his way when it comes to criticism.

I believe that virtually everybody on ZH understands and knows that Obama is simply the latest in a long line of presidents who have screwed America into the ground, economically, socially and democratically. When it all began is open to debate. It was certainly many decades ago.

But I don't follow your argument that because Obama didn't create all of the mess that exists, that he should be let off the hook for the part that he's clearly responsible for.
