The US Consumer Is Not Thriving
With the world's focus on emerging markets and anxiously trying to bring the narrative back domestically as a reason to buy US stocks, we thought this simple chart would help clarify just how 'great' the US economy (70% of GDP is consumption we are constantly reminded) is doing...
Of course this should be no surprise when disposable income is collapsing.
Why should you be concerned...?

2 moar years....baby
and than... HILLARY CLINTON!!!
much better....
Or Jeb Bush. Either way we're screwed.
Which one is leading in the BODY COUNT standings?
Both can brag to millions. Jeb had a head start with his grandfather, the Nazi supporter who lost his bank.
both are pro-bailout girly men
Who's got the bigger testes?
The Clintons lead in terms of the amount of bodies stacking up in the shortest amount of time.
The Bushes win overall since it goes back to Prescott Bush.

I was wondering why there was a Radio Shack advertisement during Super Bowl XLVIII -
RadioShack to Close About 500 Stores Within Months
http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB1000142405270230344270457936287083...
Smart use of 5 million USD, real men of Radio Shack geniuses.
That's not a lot of advance notice.
So when the 80's called wanting their stores back they weren't dickin' around.
I too was curious why a dying junk electronics shop was spending millions on snappy adverts. Pump & dump would seem - ala Best Barf.
I'm an electronics tinkerer. I used to be able to walk into Radio Shack, and the people there were all trained like MacGuyver. They could help you build anything, advise you on the right LED, resistor, or breadboard. Now they try to sell you TV's...
"iss like, iss not that good, but it is for the money, namsayin"
Ask for Dr Lexus when you go there, scro.
Our little store had one small cabinet with resistors and capacitors -- about the size of a breadbox. I was poking thru the jumbled mess and picking out resistors I needed. They actually had 'em. When I was showing the sales guy the color coding he thought I was some kind of nerdy genius. Where have all the good salespeople gone?
Bad boys rape our young girls but Violet gives willingly -- get some now. That's how we were taught it in Air Force tech school.
Where have all the good salespeople gone?
Good question. I went to guitar center and a salesman in the guitar section had to write down "EL84 power amp tube" on a little piece of paper and ask his manager if they had it. It's only been used in amps for a half century. Then they wonder why people shop online.
A greenie for reminding me of that one RR - I learned it in HAM school.

2 moar years? No one knows how long this depression will last. As others have said, do you think the Neo-Cons have any better ideas than printing money and adding on to the national debt?
The underlying problem here is that the puppetmasters are intent on giving us only two choices... the Krugman Socialist Keynesians or the Neocons.
As long as they're pulling the strings the Depression will progress roughly as long as they want it to progress...
For what purpose is open to conjecture.
nat gas right back up today, crude not falling despite the EM meltdowns. Coffee, sugar rebounding big time. Corn might have bottomed here. Effects of inflation already showing up.
one more loan?.... last one... promise.... than you'll get your money back china... here's some more cheap gold...
can we have the cheap plastic crap now?
Makes my ass twitch when I hear the term "consumers."
What an unholy depersonalization.

You didn't consume that
According to the graph, you're right.
Person is only relevant when it comes to corporations. The Sirpreme Koart (sic) says so because they have all the money for campaign bribes....errr....I mean contributions.
I remember when we were referred to as citizens.
Ah, the good old days!
The term "Citizen" or "Person" is so 19th century.
I think you mean 20th century. You had the right era though, 19th century...welcome back legalized slavery.
Serfs will be beaten until they agree to load up on more debt and spend like drunken statists.
There's one, get 'em!
Seriously, it is almost that effing stupid!
Anyway, who cares...we are at the end of this charade...prepare accordingly...
http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1735.htm
ok, so...
a) load up on debt, as much as you can
b) quit your job
c) sign up for every imaginable govt program that you can
d) default on all your debt
e) rinse, repeat
Great observation pods.....now, shut up and buy monkey!
;)

Amen to that! I remember when the word consumer was first thrown around. I've never gotten used to it. No different than a workplace that refers to their employees as resources.

How did A die?
He was your uncle.
Remember when illegal alien didn't mean immigrant.
Still think that's better than "Human Capital"
like a farm animal
I argued that very thing with my first grade teacher, while pretty she was not impressed. I was not as enamoured with her looks after that. Pretty face not backed up with a mind.
I don't she expected to hear that in first grade.
That's for the reminder, humorous memories!
Pretty much the same response in college when they rolled out the kensian fraud.
Look at the trend on the first chart. Almost fifteen years of decline, but everythings great..
Well then we all know that retail sales must catch up with the S&P and not the other way around. Don't worry, be happy!
Consume MOAR serfs!
If you build it [& give them an EBT card], they will come
Because if you don't, they will RIOT!
FEEL THE NOISE [bitchez]
Hahaha, gotta love the classic 80s!

Back in the day I thot that song was a load of crap...
Little did I know [back then] that things would only get worse & it would become an ANTHEM...
Fuck me [I guess]...
you didn't build that
I walked into that one :-)
In the words of LOP, "tick tock, m'fers!"
This time it will be different. The next gig is going to be realllly big! You'll see.
Holy Hell Google sucks ass!
Just tried to log in to my email at gmail I don't use very often - and it threw me into a Google+ pit of tar and trapped me there!
It was like a bad version of MySpace.
Jesus H. Christ what a train wreck.
Where's my garlic and cross!?!?
Yes, the economy sucks ass too!
I hadn't used gmail in a while and went back to find the "One account to rule them all" advertising. Really need to get on 'deleting' the google accounts (no longer just gmail, what I signed up for).
In NYC there are not many chain retail stores. They cannot survive for very long in the wild.
So, by the tea leaves, retail chain store YOY growth is close to a bottom and primed for a rebound.
Is that what I was supposed to take away from this?
+1
Yes, go all in on Best Buy!
/sarc
Depends....can a FED central bankster overlord once again stage a huge phony crisis and threaten to turn tanks loose in the streets if he's not given another blank checkbook?
Go out and buy something already!
If the economy crashes, it will be your fault for not buying.
Shame on you US consumer. You should know better.
I just bought something, case of 12 guage buckshot shells.
Only one?
I am surprised that you could purchase them. I thought that "Homeland Security" had first dibbs on all ammo.
What retail chains have we already lost?

And whooooooo's next? Looking at you, JCP.
That explains the panic of the deer. Asia will run into liquidity problems, when the flow of freshly printed Dollars stops.

Slip sliding away, slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away

He wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown
He said Dolores, I live in fear

i know this is anectdotal but bear with me. when i was "eliminated" along with my cohorts about five years ago and near retirement and couldn't find any comparable job at all, i decided that we were in a depression. I found three positions to cobble together, two full time (well one is really full time at 40 and the other one is the new full time at 31 hours) and a third truly part time all in industries that survived the depression and appealed to the very basics needed in our society. In every single position I am seeing on the front lines the economy contract and significantly contract. If you can sell, you must discount in order to sell. Compared to two years ago that discount is huge. People think they can get quality products for the same price as the crappy substitutes available. They don't have the money and they'll substitute the poor product in order to just get by. The profit margins have shrunk. The calls and sales opportunities have at least come back from two years ago, but it's a different consumer. Very, very few can just say I'll take that first price offered.
Don't worry be happy..... buy 1 or 2 or ten items
But, but - this time it IS different.
Right?
Miz Yellen has our backs, so buy - bieacheez.
All this is moot - this is the ONLY thing that matters - there is no way out of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFyTSiCXWEE
