Americans Are Renouncing Their Citizenship In Record Numbers

Three times more Americans gave up on America in 2013 than in 2012. As The WSJ reports, last year saw a record number of US taxpayer expatriations. While "exceptionalism" and living the American Dream remain cornerstones of maintaining the US citizenry's view of the world, it seems everything from tax-code changes to spying drove 2,999 people to hand in their passports last year, "above all, fear seems to be driving this increase."

According to the Treasury Department, 630 individuals renounced their U.S. citizenship or ended their long-term U.S. residency by turning in their green cards during the fourth quarter.

 

The fourth-quarter figure brought to 2,999 the total number of expatriations for 2013. The previous record was 1,781 in 2011, said Andrew Mitchel, a tax lawyer in Centerbrook, Conn., who tracks the data.

attributed the surge to increased awareness of the obligation to file U.S. tax returns, the increasing burden of compliance and the fear of large penalties for failure to file U.S. returns.

The U.S. is unique among developed nations in requiring citizens and green-card holders to file tax returns, regardless of where they live, he noted. People who expatriate also can be subject to exit tax.

However, we suspect this spike in 2013 is only the beginning...

This week, Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen told a congressional committee that since 2009 more than 43,000 U.S. taxpayers have entered a special program for taxpayers with undeclared offshore accounts and paid more than $6 billion in back taxes, interest and penalties.

 

Experts representing such taxpayers estimate that the IRS still is due several billion dollars more.

 

The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act may also be encouraging some taxpayers to expatriate, experts said. Set to take effect this year, it requires foreign financial institutions to report account information to the U.S., both for U.S. citizens and green-card holders living in the U.S. and abroad.

Expatriating is a difficult thing.  I would not recommend to it to most.  You must learn the language, like the food and be prepared to live differently.  Unless you are very rich.

Peru would be our first choice.

Costa Rica is an option, but just that, not my favorite, although a fair number of Americans are there.

It's easy as shit. 8 was filed on November 12 2013. I got interviewed 3 months later and granted. Done. I'm an American citizen now. Exit tax pending for mid March. And enjoy your State of Emergency when this . gov turns brutal with mil to mil contacts with foreign allies allowed to mow you and your family down in tbe street.

This also impinges on guns as well. The Constitution did not take away the right to guns, so you have it. That is why they always frame "gun-control" debates around the 2nd. They don't want you to know and think about the idea that you have all rights unless expressly banned in the Constitution . So people should be demanding their 9th. Amendment protections, and not their 2nd.

While I appreciate the legal argument that this "corporation" argument makes, all argument should begin and end with "The Law of the Land," the Constitution. And to be blunt, how ridiculous is the idea of arguing about capital letters, etc. when all of their power resides in one place, and one place only, your willingness to obey,

Look. It's there parchment! There's 2 Constitutions,  one from 1776, one from the Act of 1871. One says for the united states. The other says OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,  INC.

They removed the organic language from the 13th Amendment of 1776 which Gaurenteed our individual rights and replaced the whole amendment in the forgery look alike.

 

Please tell me your aware of this? Search Trading with the Enemy Act also. That proves we lost the Constitution a long time ago, we practice commerce,  that's it.

I worked in an immigration law office for a couple of years. A green card is the holy fucking grail to anyone who isn't a US citizen but wants to be. They are more precious than diamonds to those people. Someone actually surrendering one voluntarily is a mind-blowing act of defiance.

If there is ever any question about the complete incompetence of the Obama admin just start talking about FATCA.

The relatively small number of citizenship renouncing is one thing, but FATCA forces all foreign banks to refuse having American citizens as clients. They have made it impossible for American small businesses to sell anything in a foreign country.

This one law stifles all ability for the globally-minded enttepreneur.  If you wanted to craft a law only for the purpose of destroying American competitiveness then you would be hard pressed to beat FATCA.  You might as well remove all college courses that teach international business.  If FATCA is not repealed I can not even begin to imagine the long term damage.

The author of FATCA Dick Harvey goes around the world telling people how great it is too. Everything! is upside down in the US govt.

Imagine you're in this (not uncommon) scenario:

You live in the US lawfully, work, pay taxes, etc, but...

Your non-US parents who live abroad, have died and left you their assets/estate. Given that you are a "US Subject", the IRS will now demand that you not only declare said assets/estate, but that you will be taxed on their lifetime (or multi-generational) wealth.

Furthermore, anyone who learns of your assets (wealth?) now has Motive, Means and Opportunity to get a piece of that pie... by suing you for whatever reason. Including/especially your Ex.

How would YOU feel about having said family assets/wealth becoming part of Tax Americana? Would you just bend over and say "fuck me!", or get indignant and say "fuck you!"?

If you have a billion dollars off-shore, what makes more sense? to hand it over to a government that will squander it on useless shit? or to leave the country and live like a king in a country that doesn't nickle and dime you to death?

The United States does not have anything "special" in terms of living standards anymore, there are plenty of nicer nations that give you a lot more economic freedom.... a lot of countries are 10 years ahead of the U.S. in city development (IE: bullet trains, mono-rails, improved mass transport systems etc..... better quality of life for the average citizen, lower unemployment, better prospects)..

 

The only remaining reason to stay in the United States is nostalgia, people develop emotional ties to localities that keep them grounded preventing growth and evolution of the self.

 

Iceland looks good, new anti-banker constitution and more sound currency , more free market, and such, the grass does indeed look greener in a lot of places.....

I never quite understood the fascination with diamonds, they are not all that scarce, and we can make them in a lab now for pennies.

Diamonds are just carbon.....one of the most abundant elements in the universe.

 

The diamonds used for industrial application are dirt cheap, so the argument that they are needed for industry and thus are valuable is somewhat meh since diamonds of those "grades" are soo abundant.

 

IMO You have three investment choices.

1) Hoard Dollars and wait for hyper deflation, buy assets (land, businesses, whatever)

2) Buy bitcoins and hope that when the economy self-destructs people adopt it as a replacement.

3) Buy gold and hope the deflation doesn't devalue it too badly.

4) Move to a country where the economy isn't a complete pyramid scheme designed to bleed the 89% segment of the population.

 

Buying stocks is DOA, no way you are going to make money holding anything long.

Shorting stocks looks attractive, but you are essentially shorting stocks simply by hoarding dollars.

Bank deposits are essentially pointless and offer no return, and ontop of that bank instability (that hasn't gone away) might cause your deposits to vaporize at a moments notice.

I could never figure out diamonds either.  I'm guessing it's a matter of $/pound.  Sure, they're not worth what the local jewelry store will charge you, but you can still carry $50K worth a lot easier than other, bulkier things.

They can be made in a lab SO PERFECT that no real diamonds like them exist.And it takes a VERY experienced jeweler to be able to spot them.The key is make them LESS than perfect,but still rated with the top grades.

On the other hand if you have a good mind for business and a fine American-made product to sell, just FORGET about trying to expand overseas.  FATCA makes it impossible to even open a bank account (excuse me but this is the first step in establishing your presence in a foreign market).  

Whining about the 3000 people who turned in their passport is missing the larger point.  FATCA dooms small American business.  

I tried launching a little deal in Europe about two years ago and every third word that came out of the mouth of neighborhood banking centers was FATCA FATCA FATCA.  It was new at the time so I gave my plans a rest knowing that there was no way this law would actually be implemented.  Well here we are and I hear no good news. FATCA is moving forward.  

If you are from anywhere, hell you can be from Cambodia then every country welcomes you to do business.  American? No. Only we can not do business overseas now. Only 1 country could create such a stupid and stifling law.
