President Obama gives minimum-wage-earning Federal employees (and physically and mentally handicapped workers) a 39% pay hike to $10.10 (and there's nothing you can do about it) to "benefit hundreds of thousands of people." We suspect that the president will remind us to the new "myRA" program and its benefits and how we should all tell our young friends to sign up for Obamacare too... and how this is paid for by the usual unicorn-tears-for-dollars swap...

Something tells me if a Republican President LOWERED the federal minimum wage without going through Congress, the screams from the media would be deafening about how he had zero regard for the law and the different branches of government. How is this any different?

My understanding was that raising the minimum wage for federal employees could be done by executive order, but raising the national minimum wage can only be done by Congress.

That mimimum wage hike is also a stealth gift to the unions.
Most most major contractors use union labor and those government union labor wages are tied to the minimum wage. So a 39% increase means the wage for all union workers making above minimum wage whose contractual wages are based on mimimum wage automatically have to increase also by the same percentage depending upon how the differentials are defined in each contract. The contractors have no choice since by law they have to raise the wages due to the contract terms negotiated with unions for the duration of the labor contract currently in place.
Federal workers are not connected to the real economy, and few are at minimum wage. Look at employment as an employer. Some people are unemployable and only bring problems if they occupy space in your company.
