585,000 Without Power As "Catastrophic" Winter Storm Pax Pounds Northeast

Tyler Durden's picture

Winter Storm 'Pax' has already crippled much of the South, snarling traffic and dumping more snow than most can remember on places that are unarguably ill-prepared to cope. But, as The Weather Channel warns, up to 18 more inches of snow is forecast for the Northeast as Pax pushes up the East Coast. With no thaw expected in the South until at least the weekend (and freezing winds causing havoc), forecasters expect more power outages. Trouble has already started though further North with DC over 13 inches of snow and NYC having over 7 inches this morning alone. It's not everyday that snow is falling in Atlanta and Boston at the same time! 585,000 households are without power in 7 states this morning. Flight cancellations have begun from DC to NYC building on the 4,000 that were cancelled yesterday.

Snowing from Atlanta to Boston

Near Blizzard conditions in Manhattan/NYC:

Chaos on the roads...

Total Freeway gridlock...

And now it is heading North... with up to 18 inches of snow forecast for the NorthEast

In the last few hours, NYC alone has received 7 inches of snow and over 13 inches of snow in DC...

Though further west is getting more...

New York City's Central Park has record 5 inches of snow in the last 2 hours...

As a reminder, here is how Weather.com described Pax yesterday:

"Sometimes we want to tell them, 'Hey, listen, this warning is different. This is really extremely dangerous, and it doesn't happen very often,'" Jacks said.

The service's memo early Wednesday called the storm "an event of historical proportions."

It continues: "Catastrophic ... crippling ... paralyzing ... choose your adjective."

And power outages in the south are likely to surge...

We suspect the image of weathermen with hands on their faces will be more prevalent today...

As this is coming...

I made no such assumption about your position on AGW, I merely outlined that the error you made was of the type that the denialati do deliberately to mislead the gullible (and those that crave confirmation bias) that is all...

What’s more, it’s hitting the most populous area in the nation, so it’s likely actually lower.  Something else to talk about besides Bieber and justified homicide.

I think there's six inches of snow in Charlotte but it'll gone in 48 hours and no big deal.  Especially since snow will all be a thing of the past because of AGW.

Anytime there is a storm it is Chemtrails and geo engineering.  Or so the common meme goes.

To go deeper I used to follow this way of thinking. Seeing lasting contrails up above didn't help.  But if 15k people see these daily, I thought about how many jets and gas would be required to make these, if they are on purpose.

They sure might be doing it, but it ain't what 99% of people are seeing, myself included.

Just not enough resources to blanket the country with these on purpose.  My guess is that more efficient jets make for a lower fuel to air ratio and more persistent contrails.  Or a combination of jet engine design, altitude and and weather conditions at altitude.

Above 30.000 ft any particle will collect ambient water vapor. Jet fuel when burned spews out a host of partcles, all of which gather water. At that height the wind patterns tend to move in one direction. Thus you may see expanded contrails for hours after jet has passed.

I never regretted leaving the south.  The stupidity isn't limited to when it snows but even when it rains hard!  Also, say what you want about cold weather, but the heat and humidity are just as brutalizing and for me, far worse.  I grew up in the Northeast and actually like the  cold and the snow, just not Northeast politics.  It had to be the Virginians that really started the Revolution, the loyalist pricks in the Northeast only went along for the ride!

In the past I would have written some sacastic line about ZH not being a weather channel.

But in the new normal, when the vaugeries of weather(winter snow, summer rain, record heat/cold) seem to be the driving force, or lack thereof, of the industrial might of the most powerful nation on earth.

I say, thanks tylers! We now know what the production, sales, unemployment figures, ect... will be in advance.

Weather, Really?  Stops the engine of national production?

A nation of wusses, all to ready to be convinced with cheap propaganda that they are not well and truly f-cked.

Has anybody put a Geiger counter on this snow? Looking at the past track the moisture came in off the Gulf of Alaska (after passing over Fukushima?), dipped south in the midwest, made a turn north over Georgia and is now blessing the Northeast. Might be interesting to listen for clicks. Or not.

You can see a current map of radiation counters here:

Nothing much going on.

Remember that if anything was picked up at Fukushima, it has been diluted by thousands of cubic miles of atmosphere during it's journey.

Ditto for the ocean.

Interesting observation. Do you have any long term data overlayed with the snow/rain to prove that?

BTW, did you know that your station is reporting levels which are higher than those shown for the Fukushima/Tokyo area?

Not that those levels are any more than normal background counts...

This is just a hysteria of folks who have no idea how to live this life. What did they expect, 75 degrees 365 days a week?
Yea go ahead close all the schools, you should probably have a marshal law on top of that, why not it will be for you Own good.

What we really need is to have one of the bigger transport ship to land in the Time Square and tell the local, what really is happening on this planet.

And that would be the nail in the coffin for most of the joe six pack and the Teachers Pet Project.

Yesterday was in the mid 30's, and finished off at midnight at 32. I wore a sleeveless sport shirt all day, and even though the building we work in is very badly insulated (20 degrees above ambient), wore no jacket all day. everyone else huddling around the heaters, shivering, saying "So cold, very very cold, brrrrr".   LOL  I actually feel sorry for them, they're suffering so badly.

Oh yeah, every last one of them head down buried in their fucking cell phones.

Corbyn is well-known for his opposition to the idea of anthropogenic global warming.
