The German high court has ruled that children MUST take care of their parents even if they have not spoken to them in 27 years.
The entire social contract is collapsing.
The historical norm of children taking care of their parents was displaced with the New Deal where government stepped in to provide the safety-net.
Now the high court has ruled that it is the child’s responsibility. So what are all these taxes for?
German politicians earn more than 4 times the average politician. Government costs money – it is not an entitlement to extract taxes from the people.

I never read the crap they teach in HS or University/College. I think for myself. I grew up that way. Most of my verbal quotes will go unrecognized simply because my intellect hasn't been pumped up as useful for TPTB.
I've taken care of both of my parents. My mom has mild to moderate Alzheimers and I've given up a career as a result to take care of her. Dad is now gone to heaven and has been for five years. I'd not change anything though as I know how blessed my mom feels to be taken care of by someone who knows her special needs. What seems to some like a burden has been very uplifting for me.
I'm going to guess that your parents didn't throw you into daycare when you were a defenseless baby.

"Take care of" can have dual meanings. My parents, both of them, abandoned me and my 2 brothers as children. Someone knocking on my door telling me I "had to take care of them" would have to imprison me I suppose. Then I would want to know where was that court when I was a child. In the 60's there was not a big push for child support. Thankfully my parents are dead so I'm done with this but I don't believe my children should ever be held responsible for me for any reason. It's their job to take care of future generations, not past ones. Not since they have been given the burden's of all of this and previous generations debts as well. They have already been fucked enough. If they want to take on the responsibility then great but should not be at the point of a gun.

1 - I don't file tax returns, nor do I pay taxes except for consuption taxes at stores that can't be avoided without collusion with the store owner to avoid as much tax as possible.

Well, Angus, that is one personal response, which works best for some people. That may also be more practical than my theoretical attitude, which attempts to pretend what could work better for more people. I would be the first to admit that my political theories look pretty damn silly in the context of the real world. However, from the perspective of intellectual integrity (such as presented in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant) THEORETICALLY we should try to develop ideas which would work for more people, more of the time.

In the instance quoted the son was not being asked to pay for the estranged parent's care, the state already did. However, the state was recovering the costs it paid, from the son's share of the inheritance (a share mandated by the state). Since the son inherits part of the father's estate only because the state mandates so (the estranged father willed his estate to someone else and not the son), don't see what the problem is if the state recovers what it spent on the old man's care from the son's share of the estate. Effectively the old man paid for his care and the state mandated share of the son's inheritance came down by the amount spent for the care.
With regard to state mandated familial obligations, be they towards children, parents or siblings, it is not an easy call to make. In societies where no such obligations exist both legally and morally and there are not enough caring and capable people to pay for the care of disowned and infirm purely out of charity and compassion, we can expect to see a lot of abandoned children and old people who are exploited by bottom feeders. A society that wishes to avoid such a scenario has to come out with some mechanism to ensure that there aren't enough destitute people around for some bottom feeders to prey upon. It is a really tragic situation when laws are required to keep large numbers from abandoning their children, parents or siblings when they desperately need them. At that stage, such laws won't be effective either.

I don't think any state claims taxes go into your retirement fund. Taxes pay for the current obligations of any government, not their future obligations. So the taxes paid by the old man went into paying the expenses of the government as on that day. If the man had no estate to pass on, the expenses for his care would have come out of the taxes paid by the others when he was under the state paid care. Even welfare states like Germany distinguish between the needy and others when it comes to state providing for a person's care. Since the old man had a sizable, but perhaps not liquid, estate, the state did not consider him needy enough to be dependent on tax-payer supported care. However, instead of forcing the old man to liquidate his estate to pay for his care, the state provided the care on credit and was recovering the amount after the person died, but from his own estate, not his son.
If you believe that the state is obligated to pay for the care of every retiree, who paid taxes, including those who accumulate large estates to will to others upon death, that is fine by me, although it sounds extremely silly. But Germany is not one of those states.

The Stat takes care of no one. Either your children take care of you in old age, or other people's children take care of you. If you have children and they have means/assets, why should other people's children take care of you? The whole wealfare state is an attempt to live at the expesne of your neighbor.

Honestly, with regards to taking care of one's elderly, there are plenty of families in other socieities that do a more laudable job than the average American home. But the same could be said about raising the child. Far too many parents raise children with the same standard to which they were raised which is all too often piss-poor. No effort to make change where needed. We need look no further than the sharp decline of morals, manners, hospitality, and general honesty.
That being said, this law assumes your parents didn't beat you like a rug. Legistlating this is moronic. But at the heart of legislating this, is the inconvenient fact the promises of socialism are an abysmal failure.

Please remember, that in Europe, a parent can not disinherit a child, absent an extreme situation, such as where the child murders the parent. In the US, there is no obligation on the part of the parent to leave the child anything - children may be disinherited.I second the view that the U.S. has had these lurking statutes for a long time.
