Americans Are Angrier & More Frustrated Than Ever: 19 Furious Facts

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of The American Dream blog,

Have you noticed that people are becoming angrier?  You can see it everywhere – in our homes, in our schools, in our workplaces, in our television shows, in our movies, and certainly in Washington.  In fact, many have said that there is an “epidemic” of anger in America today.  And it is undeniably true.  As you will see below, a whole host of surveys and opinion polls show that America has become a seething cauldron of anger and frustration unlike anything that we have ever seen before.

As a nation, we are more divided than we have been in decades, and economic conditions continue to deteriorate.  People are working harder than ever and Americans get less vacation days than anyone else in the world, but median household income keeps going down every year.  Americans are dissatisfied with their relationships, their jobs, their communities and their political leaders.  There is this growing sense that our country is steamrolling toward disaster, and yet there is very little agreement on what the solutions to our problems are.  Instead, blaming others for our problems has become a new American pastime.  The very fabric of our society is coming apart at the seams and the thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted is beginning to disappear.  What is America going to look like if we continue to go even farther down this road?

The following statistics come from various surveys and opinion polls that have been conducted recently.  Without a doubt, these numbers show that Americans are angrier and more frustrated than ever…

#1 65 percent of Americans are dissatisfied “with the U.S. system of government and its effectiveness”.  That is the highest level of dissatisfaction that Gallup has ever recorded.

#2 66 percent of Americans are dissatisfied “with the size and power of federal government”.

#3 70 percent of Americans do not have confidence that the government will “make progress on the important problems and issues facing the country in 2014.”

#4 Only 8 percent of Americans believe that Congress is doing a “good” or “excellent” job.

#5 Only 4 percent of Americans believe that it would “change Congress for the worse” if every member was voted out during the next election.

#6 60 percent of Americans report feeling “angry or irritable”.  Two years ago that number was at 50 percent.

#7 53 percent of Americans believe that the Obama administration is “not competent in running the government”.

#8 An all-time low 31 percent of Americans identify themselves as Democrats.

#9 An all-time low 25 percent of Americans identify themselves as Republicans.

#10 An all-time high 42 percent of Americans identify themselves as Independents.

#11 Barack Obama’s daily job approval numbers have dipped down into the high thirties several times lately.

#12 Only 38 percent of Americans approve of the way that Obama is handling the economy.

#13 60 percent of Americans believe that the “economic system in this country unfairly favors the wealthy”.

#14 70 percent of Americans do not “feel engaged or inspired at their jobs”.

#15 Two-thirds of U.S. teens “admit to having anger attacks involving the destruction of property, threats of violence, or engaging in violence”.

#16 36 percent of Americans admit that they have yelled at customer service agents during the past year.

#17 73 percent of Americans believe that Obama’s efforts to “reform” the NSA “won’t make much difference in protecting people’s privacy”.

#18 77 percent of Americans believe that the state of the economy is either “not so good” or “poor”.

#19 65 percent of Americans are either “somewhat dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” with the direction of the country.

Are you starting to get the picture?

We have never seen anything like this in the United States during the post-World War II era.  People are fundamentally unhappy, and that has tremendous implications for the future of our society.

So what is causing all of this anger and frustration?

Well, of course the economic struggles that tens of millions of Americans are experiencing on a daily basis play a huge role.  The following is an excerpt from a recent local Fox News report

Some are describing this as “America’s anger epidemic.” And there are a few reasons: uncertainty in the job market and the economy, working long hours — on average about one month more now than they did in the 1970s and with less vacation.

So if it seems like Americans are angrier these days it’s because we are.

And it is easy to understand why people are becoming increasingly frustrated with the incompetence and rampant corruption in Washington D.C.

Grim findings have been coming thick and fast. Most Americans no longer see President Barack Obama as honest. Half think that he “knowingly lied” to pass his Obamacare health law. Fewer than one in five trust the government in Washington to do what is right all or most of the time. Confidence in Congress has fallen to record lows: in America, as in Italy and Greece, just one in ten voters expresses trust or confidence in the national parliament. Frankly straining credulity, a mammoth, 107-country poll by Transparency International, a corruption monitor, this summer found Americans more likely than Italians to say that they feel that the police, business and the media are all “corrupt or extremely corrupt”.

Americans are also turning on one another. Since 1972 the Chicago-based General Social Survey (GSS) has been asking whether most people can be trusted, or whether “you can’t be too careful” in daily life. Four decades ago Americans were evenly split. Now almost two-thirds say others cannot be trusted, a record high.

In addition, there are certainly other reasons why people are so angry these days as well…

The “Knockout Game” grows more popular. Athletes throw tantrums that would embarrass most 3-year-olds. Race relations simmer at a constant near-boil, while our leaders engage in enough posturing and name-calling to look more like a modern version of “West Side Story” than the servant-citizens who should inspire peace and mutual respect.

So what do you believe?

Why do you think that Americans are so angry and so frustrated these days?

Is there anything we can do about it?

And how bad will the anger and frustration in this country get when the economy completely collapses?

Yeah, I'd say that there's a definite need for Adult Supervision everywhere inside the beltway. People are upset because there is no more middle class. I know, because I was a kid in the 60's, when there was a middle class. Middle class means mom doesn't have to work and can stay home with the kids. I'm sure that the young families living on my block believe that they are middle class. They are not. Both parents have to work and most are in debt with credit cards. That is not my experience of middle class life.

I won the bet. When I saw the title, I KNEW it had to be a Mike Snyder article.
I'll bet if I can cherry-pick my facts and stats, that I can come up with totally believable creatures with magical powers. I shall call them Unicorns, Easter Bunnies, Santa Claus, Hobbits, and man-ridden dinosaurs.
What!? It's been done already? And people actually believed that?

I'm not sure when it was but not too many years ago I saw a study in which people were asked how much money it would take for them to kill someone they didn't know if they were guaranteed there would be no consequences and for 80% of the respondants the magic number was $10,000.

And that was a few years ago. My guess is that now a sizeable % would happily do it for free just for the hell of it as long as there was that no consequences guarantee.

Most all of this comes back to those "damn algoirthms" as if they don't line up, just like they do on the markets, you get denied access to something. I'm hoping folks are startting to realize that politicians have no control over the code running on servers 24/7, the banks and the auditors are in control, nobody else.

http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2014/02/those-damn-killer-algorithms-keep...

And what do we get to appease us...a virus bottom feeder like Facebook to where we can just lash out and tell everyone all about us..and they sit there and collect the data coming in and wirite more algorithms to determine what you will read, what shoes up in your time line, and the idiots on Wall Street over valuate it and whoopee..and now Facebook has a partnership with Barclays bank in the UK with a start up company to teach people how to use the internet and write code..they both want cheap code that spoofs and collects data for sale...duh?

If you have not seen this, and Larry Ellison may not be your favorite but he did good with a keynote at the HCM event Oracle had.  Compared to Zuckerberg we at least have age and maturity with Larry. well most of the time:)

”Be Careful About Virtual Relationships With Artificially Intelligent Pieces of Software That’s Smarter Than You“, It’s Really All About People”

So there you go the Facebook crap...sofware that's smarter than you that is supposed to appease us while all the fraud and corruption goes on...go to the Q and A and I put the minures you can forward to if you don't want to hear the entire lecture which might bore you if you are not in HR...Q and A is the good stuff be nailed it and it also bothers him to see kinds with noses stuck in cellphones playing games all day too...this was good.  He talks about the same stuff as I do and that's where folks can't tell where the virtual world leaves off and the real world values are today..the Facebook bottom feeding data sucker makes it worse.  Microsoft and Oracle created software that gave us efficiencies and helped and didn't suck our data out to resell us...PBS tonight.."The Like Generation"..

This is in large part why the Federal government, notwithstanding the money certain agencies make both by maintaining the ban and selling it covertly, will move to legalize marijuana.   Of course there's more revenue in legalizing, regulating and taxing it, both for the feds and the states.

If Occupy, for example, has any sort of resurgence, handing out joints at the rallies will both keep them from throwing molotovs, and make them easy to dismiss as hippie potheads {and they can always find a dude holding a sign regarding 'Jewish bankers' in order to also smear the whole thing as "antisemitic"}.

Anyway, Snyder does good work but is so deeply embedded in the world of the "alternative press"  [while being, understadably, sure not to ever name those who may not be named as a major part of the globalist, corporatist, warmongering fuckery, including the crime of 9/11 which enabled so much of it] that his assessment of middle America, and of Joe Sixpack is distorted to the point of wild inaccuracy.

People in the inner cities do not know a thing and wouldn't give a particular fuck if they did so long as the government subsidizes their extant lifestyle.  And the average white suburbanite believes the 9/11 narrative, and worries about being killed by Al Qaeda, and not about being killed by PTSD, Israelified police, or the ostentatious assaults on civil liberties which The One has made the hallmark of his regime.

More simply put, most people ar enot only clueless, if given the choice, they'd swallow the blue pill.   Indeed, I find myself wishing I didn't know what I know - in essence because it doesn't matter that I know it.

And having access to legal weed will certainly make it easier to switch to the blue pill.  The rest of the world can burn so long as I'm high and getting a blow job.  Just leave me alone in my own house, let me eat that fake steak, and you can round up all the troublemakers you want...

I think that it's a mixed bag.  There's a LOT more people who do know what's up.  And there's a LOT of people who are dumber than a box of hammers (thoroughly brainwashed) when it really comes down to objective thinking.

Most of these polls and whatnot are tools to keep us all divided.  The aim is always to keep us from talking about ANYTHING (even how "we hate each other") than about something such as: If our complete economic model is built on a faulty premise (perpetual growth on a finite planet) and is guaranteed to fail then what should we really be concerned with?

I basically liked your post (as I usually do), but...

I have to wonder whether there's just a lot of people that aren't going to pull the lever (that operates the trap door to all this madness) because they have no idea on what would come next.  And, really, there's very little that anyone can do.  I'd further state that I wish that people would STOP trying to "solve" shit, as most attempts to solve something are based on incomplete knowledge of the situation anyway (and even those thinking themselves all-so-enlightened I could readily challege as having the same flaw).  Yeah, people just don't seem to make any big changes or pushes unless absolutely necessary; and in that case the very notion of the "like another Peal Harbor" wasn't so sinister...

I don't believe that ignorance is bliss.  I also don't believe that there's anything such as a "solution" (except maybe death, as nothing is permanent): best is to be able to adapt to changing situtions; and it's this reason why anyone suggesting some boxed theme/ideology/framework won't receive my attention.

Oh yes, Asians are just so wonderful with their children!  Indians still murder their girl babies - as of 2011 there were 919 girls born for every 1,000 males, translating to 3 million "missing" girl babies in the decade ending 2011.  In China, there are currently 25 million young men who can't find wives. There are plenty more stats to quote, but it's too depressing, and you should get the picture.

I guess the moral of the story is that in Asia children are well taken care of if they're allowed to live?

Meth heads make the best parents, as seen in Breaking Bad.

Fuck INDIA, and the ZH bot's that work there. It's a caste society, in INDIA a woman costs less than a condom. India is fucked, probably from British BS.

*

Nobody has any problem finding a wife in CHINA, they just go to Myanmar, Laos, or Vietnam and get one.

The child limit was NEVER for the village, only in the city.

*

In the city's women that went over the LIMIT had to put the baby up for adoption, and they were sold in the west.

Far more 'babys' are murdered in the USA than anywhere else on earth.

Satoshi, so you watch Breaking Bad in Bangalore with your Tibetan wife eating homemade bagels at the age of 70? I am digging your perspective, but you are too funny.

Only the dumb, stupid, and pathological are immortal on ZH.

Does Snyder make lists of everything?  Does he give his wife a list of 20 reasons why he wants dinner. a list of 25 reasons he doesn't take out the trash?  Just once I would like to see this guy write an article that doesn't have a list of 20 things.

Maybe we should come up with a list of reasons why Snyder should take a break from the lists...

1. The schtick is predictable 100% of the time.

2. The statistics are cherry picked 80% of the time.

3. He can argue anything he sees fit with the predictable cherry picked lists, thus negating the positive effect that any one post might make.

4. His theme is doom 98% of the time. He does not make lists of 10 positive actions we can make to take back our lives and destinies from the Fed.

5. ???

I tend to ignore "authors" and just go straight for assessing the message.  I'll agree, however, that trends  and patterns tend to jade a bit.  (maybe gun and ammo sales need a bit of a pump)

I think one of the things that is and will continue to happen is that, as the situation worsens the political and wealthy class will use their powers to hord the power and riches for them selves, a everyone for themselves attitude. At that point the situation will rapidly get worse. One of the requirements of Gov is that it desperately needs to get smaller and spend less.

In a room with all the heads of Gov present, which 35% of the politicians will voluntarily quit and which ones will point to someone else and say you quit, I want to stay.

So as you can see it will get much much worse long before it gets better.

There are no real leaders in Gov today, just liars and thief's.

BTW, our gov't hasn't been working because the gov't (with few exeptions) has abandoned the restraints of the Constitution, which all of these lying bastards from the top on down took an oath to uphold.
