US Navy Frigate Runs Aground Amid Sochi-Overwatch In Black Sea
We noted that two US Navy ships - the guided-missile frigate USS Taylor and an amphibious command ship the USS Mount Whitney - entered the Black Sea on Feb 4th on what the Navy said was a routine deployment (following terrorist threats surrounding the Olympic Games in Sochi).
8 days later, the Navy reports, the USS Taylor is under inspection for damage (and rumored to be inoperable) after running aground as it was preparing to moor in Samsun, Turkey.
The guided-missile frigate USS Taylor, one of two ships on deployment in the Black Sea, is being inspected for damage after running aground last week as it was preparing to moor in Samsun, Turkey, a spokesman for the U.S. 6th Fleet said Tuesday.
The Taylor was able to moor without further incident, and there were no injuries, said 6th Fleet spokesman Lt. Shawn Eklund.
The incident, which occurred on Feb. 12, is under further investigation, Eklund said.
...
The Pentagon announced their planned deployment in January, after terrorist groups threatened to disrupt the Olympic Games in Sochi, the resort town on Russia’s Black Sea coast.
Let's just hope there's no problems in Sochi now? And how does a US Navy frigate run aground while preparing to moor in a friendly environment?

"Ya' gotta hand it to those Navy Boys."
-- Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, USMC
Someone wasn't guiding the guided missle frigate...
someone's getting a promotion to Senator...
Is the captain from Arizona?
Nobody is quite sure where exactly Captain Hazelwood is from however he was smelling of bourbon when he blamed the bankers for the calamity. Sand-bankers that is...
I think the Captain is a distant relative of Edward Smith...and his boss is the same as the old boss.
I honestly gave y'all plenty of time to say it, but oh well:
Rear Admiral Wei Tu Lo
Was most likely the local Turkish pilot, though the CO will no doubt be fired.
Oh, and TD, these outdated Frigates are most certainly conducting a 'routine deployment.' Not the best and brightest aboard this one, i assure you.
Onboard we often heard
"The Navy was designed by geniuses to be run by idiots."
One ship? Small change.
The navy once ran 9 aground in one day, destroying 7 of them.

So.... US Naval ships don't have depth gauges?
I was tinking same ting.
sometimes, dont ask me when, i m pretty sure they navigate by sight
It was supposed to be just a three hour tour...
Maybe they should've ditched the new body hugging high perspiration suits.... Hold on a second, sorry..,that was the speed skating team...apologies navy boys
On the bright side, sounds like Captain Schettino has found work with the US Navy!
NEVER trust a Moor - ancient Spanish proverb.
I thought they were the Moops?

He used to run a cruise ship in italy. Either way, considering this is nothing but a political stunt, the fact that they fucked up is even more hilarious.

Listen! You can hear someone's career ending....
FORWARD KONZENTRATIONSLAGER!
Broken depth finder???
They were looking for bass.
Bullshit. Any cheap $100 redneck fish finder from big box "oudoor" store could have prevented this, but a multi-million dollar US MIC supplied sonar system - apparently not. But of course- it will be a convenient excuse to upgrade to the forthcoming multi-trillion dollar US MIC sonar.
black sea bass, my favorite...
This is the outcome when They go looking for our wet precious metals"Broken depth finder???"
No, just the sailors have very powerful binoculars in which it was clearly seen very beautiful Russian girls on the beach.
Then CNN will report that the Captain, who's also brown and gay, has claimed that he had an epileptic episode and deserves to keep his job.
Junk away. I don't care.
Like all of our MIC foreign policy misguided missles.
Good. Leave it there, scrap the rest and invest the money in America's crumbling infrastructure.
I'm pretty sure now that the ship is grounded the USSA is obligated to bring democracy to the offending country.
An allegory for American foreign policy lead by Admiral John Kerry. "Ahoy matey! Permission to come aboard?"
Whisper rumor that ship ran aground as Hillary Clinton was dropping & rolling to avoid sniper fire.
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.
The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.
The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligans Isle.
So this is the talel of the castways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.
The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the tropic island nest.
No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.
So join us here each week my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castways,
Here on "Gilligan's Isle."
Gotta put that tune to some Zeppelin, bro.

Obama's Navy.
Bands playing, Bayonets fixed, Echo sounders switched off.
See...it just that simple.
The old procedure of, Lookout, Leadline and Log have been discontinued due to the navy ......ahhh forget it...
$100 says the helm and/or nav were: texting or looking at porn. Alcohol is a distant 3rd imo. Sex might be involved too. but porn or text are the frontrunners.
"And how does a US Navy frigate run aground while preparing to moor in a friendly environment?"
I wouldn't say it happens all the time, but it happens. Channels shift around, things don't stay exactly the same on the bottom of the sea. Mostly, though, it's piloting error, same as it ever was. Good chance whoever is commanding the vessel right now won't be shortly.
Yup, your basic career killer.
But he's likely an O5 or O6 and will retire at about 70K/yr pension plus free medical for himself and wife for life.
Veteran's health care is supposed to be phenominal too, so they have that going for them.
That's the old normal. The new normal is the smartest med students opt for military, which pays all of med school for them and lets them see the world with their family for free (while getting paid to do so with 30 days vacation per year), and indemnifies them for all malpractice suits (there are none, military docs can't be sued).
Military docs have pretty good life and hence come from the smartest students, and they treat retirees.
I had a collage buddy with that plan. Air Force ROTC for medical school, take care of some people in good shape for a few years, retire as captain, go make big bucks in private industry. This was a solid plan as he entered medical school in the mid to late 90's. His plan went to shit however circa 2001, say around fall. He ended up doing a very long stretch patching up all people in less then good shape.
exactly. he will never get command again, and probably get out at 20, if he isnt at 20 already. but this kind of thing happens. probably havent surveyed that channel in a while so the charts arent up to date. or it was just being driven/navigated by a group of dumbasses. no shortage of those in the navy, thats for sure
" or it was just being driven/navigated by a group of dumbasses. no shortage of those in the navy, thats for sure" With your grammar and sentence structure, you don`t sound like you would qualify for anything more than a boat anchor!
Ex navy, are ya?
Different country, long gone world. Pre war, Nimitz once had/let a Lieutenant run a cruiser into a dock. Said to have said how else are they to learn other than doing and thus making errors.
Anyhow I suppose the anti-terrorist moring precaution has them in a less than favorable area, as far as morings go.
He could always go work for Carnival Cruise lines sailing the Med. It looks like Schettino will go to jail so they need a replacement.
.
Unless he was able to get the ship ungrounded under its own power, there's no chance he'll command another vessel.
But hey, that tyrannosaurid-armed fossil John McCain already has one foot in Hell and is bound to kick the bucket soon, so perhaps the captain should consider a career in Arizona politics.
Naval Command cited "the weather" as the most likely cause.
Funny, same as the FED...
"And how does a US Navy frigate run aground while preparing to moor in a friendly environment?"
Incompetence ?!? Most of the time, anyway...
1 out of 2 US ships disabled by rocks placed by terrorists. Who will protect the Sochi games now? Putin must be concerned.
The Obama Charitable Trust wants the ship decommissioned & donated to The Somali Pirate Widows & Orphan Fund.
Probably ran aground on a Russian submersible.
Tough to fathom how a MIC showboat runs aground.
w t f ?
The military was slipping back when I got out. Yesmen were replacing real leaders, unqualified people were given extremely sensitive, highly technical jobs with great responsibilities, it was getting harder and harder to pass the ORIs (Operational Readiness Inspections) and even hotshot pilots were getting out in droves.
Now, a naval frigate (this is a big one), with all its sensors and navigational gear has run aground like Darrel in his sailboat, in full view of the Russians and the rest of the world.
How embarrassing. I wonder what really happened. Did the Ruskies supply a bum chart or what?
"I wonder what really happened."
I think you already answered that quite adequately. I have family in the service. They're getting out. The military is being gutted. Not so much the money, but who is being placed in command positions and for what reasons (not merit, that's for sure).
It's a much more hollow military than some here would believe. I won't go into it here- not worth the argument in this venue, but if you're involved in the military or know people who are, you know what I'm talking about.
"Its name was the USS Taylor."
Rename to USS Economy
How about one of Putin's gay mini submarines tried to hump Obama's frigate. As one would expect Obama was all show and no go.
It was the Russian port pilot (a ice hockey fan, who lost some rubles on that American ref call).
Ruskies don't operate in Turkey (not overtly, anyway...)
"...inspected for damage after running aground last week as it was preparing to moor in Samsun, Turkey."
The Russian's must thinks these Navy boys are Obama's a*s boys.
The USS Taylor Durden :-)
They should rename that one to the USS Obamacare (or the USS Bernank).
So now the MIC becomes a laughing stock for the
world along with Obozo.
Accidents happen , but with the world watching Sochi,
it does not bode well.
did they derp when they should've herped?
First women in the navy then the next thing you know a parking accident.
Trying to parallel park between some reefs... lol.
If it was the first Asian woman captain the frigate would have taken out about 2 rows of parked cars and 11 pedestrians before becoming grounded.
Thanks Obama!
Stuck in the mud, nuff said.
time for a military purge...oh wait...
putin is out of control
he is a mad dog
he cannot be allowed to force are ships onto dry land.
this is war
does he not know usa usa ships need water to stay floaty and ship shape.
george soros was correct all along russia needs some jewish bankers to help the transition to freedom and balkanisation.
if i did not have a back condition and flat feet i would be over in the ukraine helping out here ho mccain
Billions of manpower, research and computing power to make sure the vessel is idiot proof. Then, along comes the next release of i-diot
Ignorant Navy commander. Biliion dollar ship with $200 Million in electronics and they still can fuck things up.
And just think, some 80 IQ imbecile hanging off the bow with a weighted, knotted rope could have prevented this - a technology that's been around for what, 2000 years?
Mark Twain, and steady as she goes!
Keep stacking gold, silver, beans, FMJ, HP, 37 mm and 26.5 mm flares, water, guns. These MIC stooges are gonna back Obam.
http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-accessorie...
When they are on the trip wire near my perimeter and start saying "hey GI Joe donkey boy..." The flares go off and they the supression fire. I am not scared of Obam goons even if they are SeaBees.
Depth measuring stick was not long enough..

Spielberg will make a 400 million dollar 2 1/2 hour movie based on this.
James Cameron too.

Saving Ensign Goldberg.
I've been waiting for Staging Private Lynch to premier. That's a story that needs to be re-told and often. The story boards are already written.
Since I'm in a wagering mood (thsi being a day of the week that ends with a y), I'd bet $100 to someone's $1 that less than 5% of the American public can tell you who Jessica Lynch is. It's not like she has a reality show or anything.
Her own family told the press that they were threatened by "men in black" and warned not to tell the truth about that propaganda. I naively assumed that would have peeled some layers off the onion of lies. Duh. What was I thinking.
Anyone remember this? Typical of the BS floated at the time:
“The records do not tell whether her captors assaulted her almost lifeless, broken body after she was lifted from the wreckage, or if they assaulted her and then broke her bones into splinters until she was almost dead,”...."I’m kind of surprised that the news of rape is coming out so late. We should have learned about this sooner,” said Donnely, adding she suspected Lynch was brutalized after hearing reports that her dogtags were found on the nightstand of one of Saddam Hussein’s Fedayeen fighters."
Yup, right there on the nightstand, along side Mohammed Atta's magic passport. Pretty sure the Quran was on the night stand too.
I hope those guys in the Russian submarine are OK. I heard the captain of the Taylor got a periscope up his ass.
Too much diversity training.
Not enough seamanship training.
How is that even possible in this day and age? One would think that the systems in place could prevent that.
Minutes before the sickening crunch of running aground, a campy 18th century british voice was heard yelling, "Oh cabin boy!"
Hi sailor! I'm buyin the gerbils when we dock at Sochi!
They probably do have systems that can recognize and alert, but nothing to overcome the situational physics. Big ships need time to react.
The control systems are superceded by political considerations. The captain of the ship probably thought it was crazy to bring the ship in that close, but "just followed orders".
A fucking guided-missile frigate? WTF? The insane psychopaths in Washington were planning on using guided missiles against terrorists in Sochi! During the Olympics? Huh??
Totally corrupt and evil ***king idiots in the Pentagon and it has been that way since the Civil War. They and Lyndon Baines Johnsonstein got 56,000 kids killed for nothing but lots of defense contracts.
That was a side benefit. The main purpose was to foment huge deficit spending and force the end of the gold standard. It worked.
Run aground. Run a-fucking-ground?!
You stupid fucks.
God how embarrassing.
Stupid, stupid fucks.
Crazy Ivan.
Obama fired all competent admirals/generals.
What do you expect? Our Naval ships now run aground like the Costa Concordia.
Admiral Obama: "I'm on the bridge. I got lots of controls. How come we're not moving?"
"Now sit right back and I'll tell a tale, a tale of a fateful trip
that started from this tropic port upon this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man, the skipper brave and sure....."
Really guys? No one was watching the depth finder? Are we trying to over take the Polish for the most joked about nincompoops on the planet? If we are, then job well done.
Watch the Navy blame it on a homosexual (alleged) trying to commit suicide (almost worked the first time they used that excuse).
Everyone should be asking the most reasonable question of all. Why would anyone send a missile Frigate on it's last legs that should have been decommissioned a year ago to of all things an "Olympics"?
A gift from the United States of America bringing you peace
Small craft packed with explosives in 3...2...1.
Beware of political Parties and Foriegn Entanglements.
Geroge Washington
Mistakes do happen -
but nothing that another $trillion or two for the Pentagon can't cure.
I was stationed aboard a frigate in the early 80's that ran aground in Bermuda. Did extensive damage to the sonar dome and we subsequently made sail for dry dock in Bath, Maine.
For those who really want to know, it is probable that the pilot (the fellow familiar with the local waters/channels & depths, who boards the ship and is in control while making the way into port) made an error and may not have been familiar with the size of the sonar dome on the front of the frigate and thus the dome struck bottom.
Yet another reason the Marines should be in charge of the Navy. If we can't drive over it we blow the M*&%r F*$%r up and drive through it!
I think Jason and the Argonauts ran the Argo aground in this same location.
Morgan Miller was being interviewed at Sochi and everyone lost focus. Ya think?
Obama has fired so many generals, and increased politically correct diversity sensitivity rules and training such that combat readiness may be taking a hit. Really, a warship running aground in friendly waters is surprising.
I guess Obama's Kenyan half brother was at the helm doing his bit.
Must say it is ground reality
don't these ships have a depth finder to alert them the water is 40 ft or less....
come on man ..
come on man. . . who is in charge here.... ?
Nietzsche was right to point out that the virtues ultimately clash; too much of one will diminish another. So is there just too much equality and compassion in the US Navy? I think we are seeing symptoms of the effect of the PC/MC crap inbibed by the sociopathic elites in the US.
This is worse than dropping your partner on her ass in the Ice Dancing finals. I can just imagine how the Judges in Sochi scored this maneuver; the first 1.4 out of 10 in Olympic history.
U.S.S. Costa Concordia.
YAY Schettino style.
Usa is learning much from Italy
This is not a surprise. The USN has drifted away from the days of tough, resilient, educated commanders who could make decisions and act upon them. I knew a prof at USN Academy who told me the cadets were a bunch of tards. He said the profs caught cadets smoking pot, tearing components out of the engine room because they were making an annoying noise, and in one case, they sabotaged an engine so they wouldn't have to make a training run to Charleston, SC. Another prof, he told me, wanted to teach the cadets celestial navigation, but was told not to waste their time-they didn't need it and should be focusing on classwork. Yeah, who needs man's oldest form of navigation? That's what GPS is for!
Want to know how stupid the USN has become? Did you hear about the USS Independence falling apart and having to be drydocked 1 year after launching because the ship was corroding to bits? It happened because the USN forgot one of the most basic problems faced by modern ships: electrolysis. When a ship sits in the water, it begins to corrode due to electrolysis. Ships have zinc plates installed, or in this case, some kind of electronic device to prevent corrosion. You routinely remove the zinc plates and replace them when the ship comes out of the water. I've seen zinc plates dissolved into powder from long-term immersion. Somehow, the USN forgot this basic issue in building their (C)littoral combat ships. http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/06/shipbuilder-blames-navy-as-brand-new-warship-disintegrates/
Also, last year they ran a mine sweeper up on a protected reef in the Philippines. Apparently, they didn't have ANY charts on board for the area they were operating in and ran up on a reef that had been charted for over 400 years. Oh well. Who needs charts when you got GPS?
