Russia Angered At Ukraine Government Vote To Remove President After "I Won't Resign" Comments

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE

Remember that (laughable) agreement that was signed less than 24 hours ago and was grandly endorsed by all European nations, and which delineated the next legal presidential election sometime between September and December? Good times.

With 328 (of the 450 seats) voting in favor, the Ukraine parliament has agreed to removed President Viktor Yanukovych:

  • *UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENT VOTES TO REMOVE PRESIDENT YANUKOVYCH
  • *UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENT VOTES TO HOLD EARLY ELECTIONS ON MAY 25

“Yanukovych, in an illegal manner, removed himself from his constitutional duties,” Turchynov says in chamber before vote. The Russians are not at all happy with Siluanov exclaiming these actions "pose a direct threat to Ukraine's sovereignty and constitutional order."

As Martin Armstrong warns:

I believe the nation will survive divided for there is far too much resentment to simply put this all behind and walk forward. Divide Ukraine along the historical language faultline and there is a chance to calm things down. Otherwise, this will flare up and take others with it.

My position is consistent – ALL governments are only a necessary evil. They should never be allowed to have such power over the people for it will also be abused to sustain that same power. It does not matter what form of government – they are all the same.

It would appear we are getting closer to a divided/split nation...

+++++++++++++++

In the minds of so many western journalists, yesterday's "deal" to reform the constitution, hold new elections in 10 months or so, and generally all 'just get along' was a victory but this morning it is clear that very little has changed.

  • *YANUKOVYCH SAYS HE WON'T LEAVE UKRAINE OR RESIGN: INTERFAX

Late last night Ukraine time, President Yanukovych (and some of his key advisers) fled Kiev (amid so-called threats) and headed to the eastern part of the country. Then following rumors he would resign, he stated in a TV address that he would not and that pro-EU forces had staged a "coup d'etat". This has left a troubled nation with just as divided a future as protesters have taken back control of Kiev.

Russia is not happy; blaming extremists for threatening order.

The government has moved in his absence:

  • *UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENTARY SPEAKER TURCHYNOV SPEAKS IN ASSEMBLY
  • *UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENT VOTES TO REMOVE PRESIDENT YANUKOVYCH
  • *UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENT VOTES TO HOLD EARLY ELECTIONS ON MAY 25
  • *UKRAINE PARLT VOTES TO REMOVE PRESIDENT WITH 328 OF 450 SEATS

Putin will not be happy:

Russia's foreign minister on Saturday accused Ukraine's opposition of failing to fulfill its side of a peace deal intended to end the nation's political crisis and urged Western mediators to intervene.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called his German, French and Polish counterparts, who helped broker Friday's agreement between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition. Yanukovych agreed to hold early elections this fall and surrender much of his powers, but opposition supporters have kept pushing for his immediate dismissal.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov urged his counterparts to use their influence with the Ukrainian opposition, which he said "not only has failed to fulfill any of its obligations, but keeps making new demands under the influence of armed extremists and rioters."

Their actions "pose a direct threat to Ukraine's sovereignty and constitutional order," he said.

*YANUKOVYCH SAYS SOME PARTY MEMBERS DEFECT IN BETRAYAL: UBR TV

Government authority appeared to melt away Saturday, leaving protesters in control of the capital's center. President Viktor Yanukovych left the capital for a city in the country's Russian-speaking east and said he would work to prevent the country from splitting up.

In a television interview Saturday afternoon in Kharkiv, where Russian-speaking supporters had gathered, Mr. Yanukovych denounced the events in Kiev as a "coup d'etat" that he blamed on "bandits." He said he wasn't stepping down and vowed to remain inside the country. He said parliament's decisions today are "illegal" and that he would refuse to sign them. Asked about his plans, he said he will travel in the Russian-speaking south and east of the country, "where for the moment it's less dangerous."

Opposition leader Vitali Klitschko earlier had called on parliament to vote to oust Mr. Yanukovych and announce presidential elections in May, as police withdrew from the center of the capital Saturday.

Ukraine opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was expected to be released from prison within hours, according to a spokeswoman for the opposition.

The army has said it will not get involved...

*UKRAINE MILITARY, DEFENSE MINISTRY `REMAIN FAITHFUL TO PEOPLE'
*UKRAINE DEFENSE MIN: ARMY WON'T BE INVOLVED IN GOVT CONFLICT

Opposition leaders signed a peace deal with Mr. Yanukovych Friday after dozens were killed in clashes between protesters and police. The deal proposed power sharing and presidential elections by the end of the year. But protesters weren't satisfied and called for his immediate ouster.

In Kiev on Saturday, volunteer security brigades from among the protesters took over security at government buildings, and journalists reported around 300 people had entered Mr. Yanukovych's opulent suburban residence without resistance.

Oleh Tyahnybok, an opposition leader, called on parliament to adopt a resolution calling on police and protesters' "self-defense" forces to work to prevent looting in Kiev and other cities.

Outside the Kiev headquarters of Ukraine's security service, plain-clothed men wearing earpieces stood at the street corners, eying those who passed. They wouldn't say who they worked for.

...

With truckloads of activists armed with baseball bats driving the streets of Kiev, the security service appeared to be taking no chances. In the interior lobby and parking lot of the building, fire hoses and fire extinguishers were piled in the corners.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that "it serves only the Ukrainian people and fully shares the desire of citizens for immediate change." It called for cooperation from all sides to ensure public order.

A power vaccum has developed...

Opposition lawmakers in parliament called for calm amid concerns over a power vacuum, calling on state officials and religious and civic leaders to work together to ensure order.

Parliamentary speaker Volodymyr Rybak, a close ally of Mr. Yanukovych, handed in his resignation Saturday. Lawmakers elected opposition leader Olexander Turchinov to replace him. It wasn't immediately clear whether the opposition could muster sufficient support to vote Mr. Yanukovych out.

The European Union is prepared to offer Ukraine financial support, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso said on Saturday.

"If there is a reform-minded government in Ukraine, we will work with the international community and international financial institutions to support Ukraine," Mr. Barroso told German newspaper "Welt am Sonntag."

Can the Ukranian military be paid off?

Even it can, the Russians aren't going to lose the Eastern part of that neighboring Country that provides ports to it's military and commerical business interests. Well, Seize Mars, that is my view, that governments are necessarily existing evil. The only thing that is perhaps possible to develop checks and balances, through divisions of powers, that restrict government from becoming worse. Human beings without evil is like energy without entropy. Civilization without violence is like physics without force.

The primary historical driving force for government was the history of warfare. One's government was needed to protect one against another's government. Government is a bully, to protect against another bully. The ideal of "no government" is the same as the ideal that there would be no bullies. People are grouped together by the process of the resolution of conflicts. Warfare is organized crime on a large scale. Government is the biggest form of organized crime, which gets controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals. There are chronic political problems inherent in the nature of life. Governments are on a sliding scale of organized crime. Bad government degrades people's lives. Good government degrades their lives less. A failed government perhaps enables another government to take over, which may be better, but more likely is probably worse.

The only realities are different systems of organized lies, operating organized robberies. Relatively disorganized robbery is not necessarily better than organized robbery. Government exists because organized crime exists. The only things which can possible exist are different sliding scales of how that is regulated and controlled. By and large, the more incompetent the people become, the more they allow their government to become worse for them. Being brainwashed to believe in the biggest bullies' bullshit social stories tends to make people become worse political idiots, which enables their bullies to operate worse governments. One of the flip sides of that idiocy is the ideal that there should be no government.

By and large, the vast majority of people have been too successfully conditioned to not want to understand politics, which enables worse forms of government to flourish. In my opinion, what is happening in the Ukraine seems to be the exploitation of historical cultural differences to advance the international banksters agenda, which has pretty well been the universal trend in world history for several Centuries. Most of the countries where the international banksters have already been able to dominate are used to attack the few countries that the international banksters were not yet able to dominate. The paradox is that being within the area already controlled by the banksters drives steady deterioration, while being on the edge of the areas relatively outside of the banksters' controls drives acute deterioration, as they attempt to assert or reassert control.

As long as the majority of people continue to be brainwashed in the biggest bullies' bullshit view of the world, then they are not able to understand what is really going on enough to effectively resist. Governments in North America are so totally dominated by politicians that are the banksters' puppets, who are performing for the masses of muppets, that we are practically incapable of doing anything to change that. In other places around the world, the real problems that people have get channeled by the agents of the banksters to cause trouble, in order to eventually advance the overall agenda of those international banksters. Thus, the world is headed towards a global government, which will be the biggest form of organized crime ever, controlled by the best organized gang of criminals, the international banksters. In my view, each little national event, anywhere in the world, should primarily be perceived using that perspective.

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT THE BANKSTERS' SYSTEM IS THE TRIUMPH OF BACKING UP FRAUD WITH FORCE, WHICH NEVER MAKES THOSE FRAUDS BECOME TRUE, BUT RATHER DRIVES CIVILIZATION AS A WHOLE TO BECOME MORE INSANE. SINCE MOST PEOPLE ARE TOO SUCCESSFULLY CONDITIONED TO THINK USING FALSE FUNDAMENTAL DICHOTOMIES, AND THEIR RELATED IMPOSSIBLE IDEALS, THEY ARE UNABLE TO ORGANIZE BETTER GOVERNMENTS, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND, AND DO NOT WANT TO UNDERSTAND, THE BASIC UNITARY MECHANISM THAT ALL GOVERNMENTS ARE NECESSARILY ORGANIZED CRIME. THE ONLY REAL "CHOICES" ARE BETWEEN DIFFERENT WAYS OF ORGANIZING CRIME. THERE IS NO CHOICE TO NOT HAVE ANY.

Civilization is overrated.

Sat, 02/22/2014 - 21:37 | 4466761 Radical Marijuana
Radical Marijuana's picture

No doubt about that Chuck! Civilization as advertized, compared to as delivered, is an enormous misrepresentation, especially due to the degree to which the biggest bullies dominate "civilization," while the vast majority have adapted to act like idiots within that domination. The theory of a constitutional democracy, operating through the rule of law, which is what our civilization is supposed to be, has been more than 99% destroyed by the way that the money system, and the feedback through the funding of politics, has been taken over by applying the methods of organized crime, to the degree that the vast majority of people are merely bullshit consumers, rather than competent citizens.

The theory of civilization is not the only thing that is overrated, the rationality and intelligence of average human beings is even more overrated. It is nice to day dream about a civilization where it did not devolve to be dominated by the biggest bullies, and their bullshit, but apparently that is practically impossible, since too many people not only already believe in that bullshit, but moreover want to believe in that bullshit.

Radical,

Slow down, bro. Define "government" or "the State" as that thing which insists on a monopoly on violence.

You really think that the solution for self defence is surrender your ability to choose a defense contractor, and instead submit to a monopoly?

I have a security staff. They are armed and they stand around all day keeping bad people away from me. If one of them acts up, or misbehaves, I fire the guy. Why would I want to give up that arrangement and substitute it with one where I surrender control of my life to a monopoly of people who extort money from me and then promise "protection" maybe, if I behave myself and bow down nicely?

We don't need governments, we don't need banks.

I'll keep my own money, thanks, and hire my own goons. You hire yours.

Splitting Ukraine into two parts is a statist fallback position. They know they are on the defensive here. The people staged a removal of a tyrant. It worked.

The globalist idea is to now play up or emphasize a cultural wedge between Ukrainians who are of Russian backgrounds, and those who are of, well, Ukrainian.

That is their way to maintain a method of control. Kind of like Britain hanging on to northern Ireland - it's for protection, you see. To "protect" the Irish from...other Irish.

If Ukraine splits, there is a good chance she will lose her Black Sea access (and possibly Kiev) because Transdniestria is another region that is staunchly pro-Russian and, considering the circumstances, would most likely want to join the Russian Federation. Also, the quoted map in the article does not necessarily reflect pro or anti-Russian sentiments. They are not necessarily only along the language lines but also along the historical ones. It is worth to mention that Belarus is probably next. Her western part is Belarussian speaking with historical ties to Poland (same as western Ukraine), while her central and eastern parts are Russian speaking with historical ties to Russia.

and it's official the country just split in two-

The public gathering of deputies from local councils of southeastern Ukraine have declared they are taking responsibility for constitutional order in the country, as thousands of people have assembled in the city of Kharkov.

Follow RT's LIVE UPDATES

“We, the local authorities of all levels, the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Sevastopol region decided to take responsibility for ensuring the constitutional order and the rights of citizens on their territory,” their resolution said.

The Kharkov public gathering has announced a number of measures local authorities should take in response to the developments in Kiev. They should take full responsibility for all decision in respective regions with no regard to authorities in Kiev until the constitutional order in Ukraine is restored, a resolution of the gathering says.

They authorities should take measures to protect arms depots and prevent their take-over and looting by radical opposition activists.

The deputies have criticized the decision adopted by the Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) in the last few days, saying they are raising doubts about its legitimacy.

The gathering says the legislative acts may have been passed involuntary and are neither legitimate nor lawful.

The resent decisions of the national parliament were taken in conditions “of terror, threats of violence and death,” the resolution says.

Meanwhile, citizens are encouraged to form local militias to protect public order. Local authorities are to fund and support those militias.

All of this "coup"  rhetoric is just posturing on behalf of the Russian interests. Nothing but a negotiating tactic to leave the door open for Russian military intervention against any reprisals by the Ukrainians upon ethnic Russians, pipelines, and naval bases.

As long as things quiet down and Putin secures his naval bases and pipelines he will be satisfied. He'll try to split Eastern Ukraine off from the West long term but there's no hurry.

Agreed.  No hurry, and Nato/EU is but a paper tiger.  A tiger easily whipped into submission by adjusting the tap on those pipelines - especially in winter.

Putin to EU - keep poking at us if you want to, but you better stock up on warm clothing and insulation.

The Ukraine is not meant to survive as a state. The unrest is there to create a spillover to Russia and Belarus, and bizarrely, also to Hungary, Turkey and Poland.

Great short analysis. I was wondering why the pipelines hadn.t been targeted. I agree that Putin doesn't need to be in a hurry; he's not huingry. As always enegy = universal non fiat currency is the key

pipelines move gas. Railroads move armies.

No one here has done an inventory of what Kiev...let alone Ukraine itself...already has.

I saw the Russian military equipment still sitting in East Germany after the Wall collapsed.

Nice airfields too.
This is a logistical nightmare of the first order for Putin. Simply put..."everything that he put there is now their's."

So sure..."he's left with a lot of gas." Big phuckin' whoopee-doo.

What happens if C-5's start landing outside of Kiev? "Start targeting civilian populations with your missiles"? I'm sure that'll go over well.

I do see the Russians are looking good on the medal count however so they got that going for them.
Those were pretty expensive Games though.
50 billion in hard currency ain't chump change.

I won't even pretend to understand all the incidentals that paint the big picture over there.

Frankly, I agree with Paul; It's not something we need to get involved with. We are not the world police, and shouldn't aspire to be them either. The US has its own problems that need addressing.

However, I tend to empathise with the hungry and disinfranchised

WTF?  Quoting Martin Armstrong on the Ukraine?  Since when is he an expert on anything except his own Ponzi scheme.  I really don't understand why ZH gives him the time of day.  He's a felon who has made eggregiously wrong predictions about many things.  He is no expert on the Ukraine.

People here seem very divided on the Ukranian revolution.

One thing for certain, the collective cognitive imperitive for revoulutionary action is always discontent and hunger due to a growing dichotomy between the haves and have nots. Just guess who the have nots are?

These mini revolutions seem to be popping up more and more in the past few years.

More to come in a neighborhood near you!

"...ALL governments are only a necessary evil. They should never be allowed to have such power over the people for it will also be abused to sustain that same power. It does not matter what form of government – they are all the same."

How long before people in the west realise this and a tipping point is reached??

There's nothing wrong with "democracy", just so long as it's kept on a tight leash by a strong constitution owned by the people.

Any government should be allowed to float its own currency, free of compond interest. What's your argument? Without tax-free interest to central bank shareholders, the banking system will not attract talented professionals to run the system? HAHAHA! Talented professionals? HAHAHA!!!!!!!!

Some media report that Tymoshenko declared that she is going to run for president in elections to be held on May, 25th.
Battle for power has officially begun. This isn't going to end well, despite what some euphoric people in Ukraine believe.
So, if you want to run for president in Ukraine, you have to go to jail first. Ukrainian tradition :-)

Anyhow, Central Election Commission, which is responsible for election organization, already said that there is no money allocated for presidential elections this year, and that budget law has to be changed before government money can be used to finance elections.
As I wrote before, things are developing too fast, people seem to act first, think after, which is a recipe for disaster.
