Greenspan Speaks: Bitcoin, Bonds, & China "Bubble"; US Stocks "No Bubble"

Tyler Durden's picture

Since his historical track record has been spot on until now, we thought it useful to reflect on the wisdom of the maestro as he speaks this morning and his recent appearances. On the heels of the success of his un-best-selling book, Greenspan explains:

  • *GREENSPAN SAYS 'NO DOUBT' BUBBLES ARISING IN CHINA'S ECONOMY
  • *GREENSPAN SAYS OF BITCOIN: 'IT'S A BUBBLE'
  • *GREENSPAN SAYS 'I DON'T SEE' SIGNS OF A BUBBLE IN STOCK MARKET
  • *GREENSPAN SEES SIGNIFICANT RISE IN LONG-TERM RATES COMING

It appears he bubble-vision is strong and yet he notes that US income inequality is potentially harmful to the US political system and Dodd-Frank doesn't work; adding that the US needs 4% growth to fix itself.

He had plenty more to say...adding to his recent comments...

US Stocks

  • *GREENSPAN DOESN'T SEE AN ASSET PRICE BUBBLE IN EQUITIES
  • *GREENSPAN SAYS HE'S MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTALS

US Economy:

  • *GREENSPAN EXPECTS `MORE OF SAME' IN ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE
  • *GREENSPAN SAYS `HOUSING CLEARLY HAS COME BACK'
  • *GREENSPAN SAYS PART OF SLOWING ECONOMY IS SEVERE WEATHER
  • *GREENSPAN EXPECTS DOWNWARD REVISION IN 4TH QTR GDP
  • *GREENSPAN SEES `SLIPPAGE' IN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION

US Regulation:

  • *GREENSPAN SAYS DODD-FRANK MAY PROVE `COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE'
  • *GREENSPAN SAYS DODD-FRANK REGULATORY STRUCTURE DOESN'T WORK
  • *GREENSPAN FAVORS REQUIREMENT FOR CONTINGENT COVERTIBLE BONDS
  • *GREENSPAN SAYS CONTINGENT CONVERTIBLE BONDS COULD AVERT DEFAULT

US Income Inequality:

  • *GREENSPAN SAYS U.S. INCOME INEQUALITY `DANGEROUS'
  • *GREENSPAN: INCOME INEQUALITY HARMFUL TO U.S. POLITICAL SYSTEM
  • *GREENSPAN: U.S. NEEDS 4% ANNUAL GDP GROWTH TO CUT INEQUALITY

Bitcoin:

  • Dec - *GREENSPAN SAYS OF BITCOIN: `IT'S A BUBBLE'
  • Dec - *GREENSPAN: DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHERE BITCOIN BACKING COMING FROM

Bonds:

  • Dec - *GREENSPAN SEES SIGNIFICANT RISE IN LONG-TERM RATES COMING

China

  • Dec - *GREENSPAN SAYS `NO DOUBT' BUBBLES ARISING IN CHINA'S ECONOMY

The notion that BC and gold are interchangeable is ludicrous.

Mon, 02/24/2014 - 12:00 | 4471042 tmosley
tmosley's picture

They have many of the same characteristics, so they can be compared directly in many cases, this being one of them.

Gold is better than bitcoin for savings and wealth preservation, while bitcoin is better than gold for transacting over long distances.

Also, one would do well not to dismiss comparisons without actually thinking about it.  The word "ludicrous" is a thought stopper.  Don't stop thinking.

Mon, 02/24/2014 - 12:11 | 4471091 Tinky
Tinky's picture

You "have many of the same characteristics" as Michael Jordan, and it's equally ludicrous to imagine that the two of you are somehow comparable, let alone interchangeable

Mon, 02/24/2014 - 12:18 | 4471139 Herd Redirectio...
Herd Redirection Committee's picture

OK, so lets think for a second.  BTC is good for transacting, gold is good for store of value...

So... Therefore... BTC is like holding cash, not holding gold.  You want some on hand, in case you need to transact, but due to volatility there is no real benefit to holding BTC BEFORE you need to transact with them.  The low cost of transfer is at this moment in time negated by the high volatility.

But it in the future, I can see a (GOLD BACKED) BTC (or imitator) being a substitute to Western Union et al.

We're not there yet.  And no reason to hold BTC in the meantime, IMO.

Mon, 02/24/2014 - 12:25 | 4471169 fonestar
fonestar's picture

Bitcoin is an excellent store of value as well.  It has massively outperformed both gold and silver since its release into the wild and will continue to do so.

I am not an economist by any stretch of an imagination, but what is wrong with taking a chance on bitcoin? I wouldn't put all my money on it but why not buy a few and see where it takes you? Isn't that diversifying? Why not take a chance? Like I said I wouldn't bet my house on it, but I bought a few when they were at $20 and if I lose $800 so what? I took a chance, like many of you did with a stock market. As of now I'm still in the black.

Seems to me the Bitcoin bubble has burst.  Is he saying it's a bubble at this level?  If so where was he on the first trip up?

The Fed has always operated by viewing the world through very defective and distorted rear view mirrors. That's why the economy keeps ending up in the ditch.  They will not know that they have driven off the cliff until they see nothing but blue skies in their rear view mirrors---as the economy plunges.

Good morning Doc. You're right. It means that in our bifurcated economy some people are going to benefit greatly and enjoy a higher standard of living while the others can fight over jobs at McDonald's. It also means that people will slowly realize that they are socially and economically redundant and no matter what they do, food stamps will be their major source of nourishment and support. No wonder the US population is one of the most medicated on earth.

It's indicative of how the fed is a progressive/leftist entity.
It see's income not as something arising from economic growth, but
as something to be doled out by the gov.  To progressives and keynesians, Income inequality means that someone isn't getting their
