Russia Awakes: Accuses Ukraine's New Government Of "Armed Mutiny", Says It Poses "Real Threat To Our Interests, Citizens"
The Olympics are now over, which means that Russia can finally start taking steps toward making good on its warning from last week, spoken by a senior government official to the FT, that "If Ukraine breaks apart, it will trigger a war," adding that "they will lose Crimea first [because] we will go in and protect [it], just as we did in Georgia." And while there have been photos (so far unconfirmed) of Russian military vehicles heading into the Ukraine, for the time being Russia has kept a surprisingly low profile. Until now.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday said Russia had grave doubts about the legitimacy of those in power in Ukraine following President Viktor Yanukovich's ouster, saying their recognition by some states was an "aberration".
"We do not understand what is going on there. There is a real threat to our interests and to the lives of our citizens," Medvedev was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.
"There are big doubts about the legitimacy of a whole series of organs of power that are now functioning there."

Dmitry Medvedev said Monday, according to Russian news agencies, that the new authorities have come to power as a result of "armed mutiny," so their legitimacy is causing "big doubts."
He said Russia would be ready to resume relations with Ukraine once it sees a "normal, modern government based on laws and constitution of Ukraine."
"If you consider Kalashnikov-toting people in black masks who are roaming Kiev to be the government, then it will be hard for us to work with that government," he said.
Medvedev added that Russia's decision to recall its ambassador in Kiev for consultations meant that "there is a threat for our interests, and for life and health of our people in the embassy."
All this is happening as (insolvent) Europe is scrambling to obtain the tens of billions it needs to make good on a topping overbid for the Ukraine, something which Russia appears to be largely laughing about, and certainly something which Gazprom, which incidentally holds the fate of all of Europe, and not just Ukraine, in its hands. Literally.
As we have said since the Ukraine coup became official: keep an eye on the Russian response. Right now it is all that matters.

For one thing Arrow and Iron Dome are INCOMING threat defenses. As in they attack the missile during terminal flight. There is also David's sling or something like that but that's for low altitude cruise threats.
And what about this little gem: "You hit them at apogee before they release their MIRVs." The Israeli systems you are referring to are INCOMING THREAT interceptors not apogee interceptors. They are low altitude short range missiles. Also are you familiar with what the word apogee means? How do you plan on intercepting an ICBM at apogee, without a missile of similar altitude, range (apogee is pretty far down range you know) and maneuver capabilities??? Even without payload that will be a big missile. Certainly not single stage.
So to summarize: You start with some apogee interceptor which shoots down the missile before it releases the payload. Then you use an example short range systems that are designed to intercept at terminal phase, which for an ICBM is... wait for it... THE REENTRY VEHICLE(s).

NATO is probably more than happy to balkanize Ukraine. After all, Ukraine is a buffer zone for Russia and the most important part of this buffer zone, the Carpathian mountains, are located at the western edge. If Ukraine falls into NATO hands, even the western portion of it, it leaves Russia extremely exposed to NATO armies, basically giving them free access to the caucasus and elsewhere. In other words, Russia WILL at some point lose the caucasus if even a portion of Ukraine falls into NATO hands.
Well they might accept it, but the EU/IMF wan the east. Apart from Kiev and environs, western ukraine is Poland in the 1950s.

It's not wrong. And no, it would give all the advantage to NATO forces. Look at the map. Russia has very few natural barriers and the Ukraine-Kazakhstan window is very small, leaving the caucasus isolated. It's a massive weakness that can easily be exploited if the natural barriers in the west don't slow the advance of invading armies, leaving the Russian black sea fleet vulnerable in the process. From a military point of view eastern Ukraine is irrelevant compared to the west.

What Russia did was to offer Russian passports to lots of eastern Ukrainians, on the condition they prove at least some minor relation (grandfathers, family that lived there) to Russia. These people now have dual citizenship and are the vehicle used by Russia when it claims "we must protect our citizens".
Looks familiar to me, because the same method was/is used by Hungry :D with Romanian citizens living in Transylvania (western Romania). Some of them have Hungarian passports, and Orban hopes that someday he'll got to say what his good friends Medvedev&Putin said today: "we must protect our citizens". But unlike the Ukraine/Russia story, our Romanian army did march one time all the way to Budapest, crushing the Hungarians. We are not eager to repeat that, but will do if needed.

I am disgusted about how all this turned out. If the people of Ukraine think replacing a bad oligarch (Yanukovich) with a "good" oligarch (Tymoshenko) solved their problems, they're in for a big disappointment.
