Russia Awakes: Accuses Ukraine's New Government Of "Armed Mutiny", Says It Poses "Real Threat To Our Interests, Citizens"

Tyler Durden's picture

The Olympics are now over, which means that Russia can finally start taking steps toward making good on its warning from last week, spoken by a senior government official to the FT, that  "If Ukraine breaks apart, it will trigger a war," adding that "they will lose Crimea first [because] we will go in and protect [it], just as we did in Georgia." And while there have been photos (so far unconfirmed) of Russian military vehicles heading into the Ukraine, for the time being Russia has kept a surprisingly low profile. Until now.

  • MEDVEDEV SAYS RUSSIANS IN UKRAINE FACE THREAT IN UKRAINE: RIA
  • MEDVEDEV SAYS RUSSIAN INTERESTS UNDER THREAT IN UKRAINE: RIA
  • MEDVEDEV QUESTIONS LEGITIMACY OF UKRAINE'S INSTITUTIONS: IFX
  • MEDVEDEV HAS NO INFORMATION IF AZAROV IS IN RUSSIA: RIA

Reuters adds:

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday said Russia had grave doubts about the legitimacy of those in power in Ukraine following President Viktor Yanukovich's ouster, saying their recognition by some states was an "aberration".

"We do not understand what is going on there. There is a real threat to our interests and to the lives of our citizens," Medvedev was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.

"There are big doubts about the legitimacy of a whole series of organs of power that are now functioning there."

Finally, from the AP:

Dmitry Medvedev said Monday, according to Russian news agencies, that the new authorities have come to power as a result of "armed mutiny," so their legitimacy is causing "big doubts."

He said Russia would be ready to resume relations with Ukraine once it sees a "normal, modern government based on laws and constitution of Ukraine."

"If you consider Kalashnikov-toting people in black masks who are roaming Kiev to be the government, then it will be hard for us to work with that government," he said.

Medvedev added that Russia's decision to recall its ambassador in Kiev for consultations meant that "there is a threat for our interests, and for life and health of our people in the embassy."

All this is happening as (insolvent) Europe is scrambling to obtain the tens of billions it needs to make good on a topping overbid for the Ukraine, something which Russia appears to be largely laughing about, and certainly something which Gazprom, which incidentally holds the fate of all of Europe, and not just Ukraine, in its hands. Literally.

As we have said since the Ukraine coup became official: keep an eye on the Russian response. Right now it is all that matters.

Leaders in east Ukraine vote to take control of their areas The Russian Stronghold in Ukraine Preparing to Fight the Revolution

Eastern Ukraine and Crimea don't want to be part of the new tyranny in the west, are breaking off, and will be asking for Russian protection.

Eastern Ukraine rises against Kiev LIVE UPDATES

So we can expect the US state department to begin talking about the importance of territorial integrity, and the idea that the people of the eastern ukraine must submit to what NATO and the IMF want....

The split could be a relatively peaceful affair a la Czechoslovakia, and it won't be Putin fucking that up, it will be NATO.

Think enemy non-combatant status will apply to this fuck head?!  With everything else we've done in the Middle East who in their right mind would sign up for a job like this?  He has to be 51 cards short of a deck!

I swear to God He's got what's is coming to him and so do the rest of us as this thing escalates and we continue to do nothing.

Chances are he's a Ukrainian cop. Never heard of the IPA before.

"Its purpose is to create bonds of friendship and to promote international co-operation."

It looks like their 'world congress' was in Israel a couple years ago.  Who knows, brother, but could be the guy had that and put it in his pocket on the theory he'd get off easier if the cops grabbed him. Kind of like having a PAL sticker on your car.

Probably just an excuse to get together and get drunk.  Cops are a brotherhood and all that.

USA, Russia and GBP signed an aggreement with guarantee for Ukraine (their independence, and borders confirmation) in exchange of Ukrainian nuclear weapon given to Russia. Most of you are forgetting this fact.

The other thing - Russian have right at this point - if some of the people don't want to be part of Ukraine anymore why to force them to listen facists from the West Ukraine? Nazi guys were never blamed for the things they do.

No common language for this people, no common identity, no common history. So why to keep them together? Split.

The problem: west wants east industry, east wants to Russia.

Russia let Eastern European countries (e. g. East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, etc) and former Soviet republics (e. g. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, etc) to gain independence peacefully in exchange for the West's guarantees that NATO will not be expanded eastwards. What happened soon thereafter? You seem to be forgetting this fact.

The big boys have long term plans and wheels within wheels. What has just happened was set up years ago when Russia was awarded the Winter Olympics. Let us not forget that action in Georgia occurred while the Olympics distracted the world. This time the West presented Moscow with a fait accompli during a period when the latter dared not roll tanks. The question now is whether Russia will swallow hard and live with it. The answer may turn on what happens in Syria. Arabians are keen to get their NatGas pipeline through there, and if they do Russia can no longer use GazProm as a lever against Ukraine and Europe. They will still be a player, but no longer a hegemon. But if they fight, they face international pressure and the suspicions of their neighbors. The situation is still in flux, and likely will be for some time to come.

Yup, I too noticed there are lots of shills here posting day&night about almighty russia and kissing putin's ass. What they don't know is their posts don't change much but it does make it obvious who's paying them. User flakmeister came to the same conclusion somewhere on these comments, too.

All these russki-lovers should be sent to Russia to experience living there, not as oligarchs do, but as ordinary people. Make them face all the hardships of living in Russia for a couple of years and they'll feel like in heaven after returning in the EU or US.

Waging war and kissing Putin's ass is easy to do while sipping your coke on a couch somewhere in EU or US.

Hey 'flacorps'

Er... You left out the part about the 120,000 Syrians who have been exterminated over the last 3 years using proxies that torture, rape, cut off heads and eat body parts of Syrian Sunni, Shia and Eastern Orthodox Christians in a "fear campaign" funded by the U.S. Saudi Arabia and the U.K.

Who started all of this???... Just askin if you were aware.

I also don't see anyone mentioning the hit squad that murdered 37 Russians in Vladivostok prior to the Olympics from the same "yours truly A Team" that brought that same mayhem to Syria, Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan!

Let us know when an international criminal court convenes to investigate the facts so the world or what's left of it becomes a safer place.

It is difficult to disagree with Russia's Medvedev.

I too have very serious concerns about "who" has taken control of Ukraine.

I too have serious concerns about the role played by the US, EU & UK in bringing the country down.

I too have serious concerns about the EU promising money it doesn't have to essentially buy favour.

And I too have serious concerns about the British Chancellor Osborne - apparently with nobody's concurrence - calling for other countries to "open up their wallets for Ukraine". Of course he means "our" wallets, not his own:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2566305/We-open-chequebook-rebui...

Yet another giant geo-political mess has been created by western political elites - this one in the Ukraine - without one word of consultation with their people. It could very easily get out of control.

Where was all your "concern" when Viktor Yanukovych started dismantling the democratic checks and balances on his power...where was your voice when he renigged on his campaign promise to support European integration?

Where was all that big hearted "CONCERN" when he started enriching himself from the public coffers and turned personal family members into BILLIONAIRES overnight?

That "concern" of yours...How many peices of silver did you get for it?

Mon, 02/24/2014 - 12:53 | 4471286 smacker
smacker's picture

Please get this:

I have no more time for Yanukovych than the others because all politicians are slimeballs. But that was not my point of concern.

I don't know at this point whether Ukraine has jumped from the frying pan into the fire. Time will tell. Sooner rather than later methinks.

But you know, Egypt did exactly that and Libya too. I have little doubt that this is often what happens in any country that overthrows its incumbent government. It would happen in the US, UK if we overthrow the criminals running our governments. And when you drill down into the MO of those who often drive revolutions, they simply want "their" version of big authoritarian government in place of the one they overthrow.

Please see my comments as a warning that any revolution needs to be carefully planned with the intention of installing free, democratic, small governments, not a new bunch of despots.

In this regard, the jury's out on Ukraine.

Nicely put.  I withdraw the "silver" jab.

But my point stands that concern can't just arise after the despot gets the boot.  It should be there during the documented tyranny -much more- than during the uncertain transition.  But yes, things uncertain and are a concern.

Good luck to the Ukrainians.

there's no danger of that.

there's some danger of weapons going in, but I'd tend to expect the East will break away, invite the Russians in, and only a relatively little violence.  Eastern Ukraine used to be Russia proper anyway.

The question is, what fuckery will the US/NATO engage in to prevent the split of the country?  They ought to just let it happen.

But the East/South/Crimea is likely what the real hawks want - but they are batshit insane if they think they'll get it.

Ivan will ready nukes over Crimea. No doubt about that.

Frankly, from the headlines, you'd think it was the Russians who were meddling.  They've meddled surpringly little.

Its the fucking EU and Americans that have injected themselves where they absolutely have no right to be.  Most of the ethnic Ukrainians probably don't want EU domination either...  what will be interesting to see is the way the puppet regime in Kiev treats the protesters it is going to get against concessions to the EU/IMF etc.

Hypocrisy won't stop the western press, and fuckwits like Cunt of Treason from claiming the new, post east/west split protesters to be terrorists, or fascists or whatever  {and helpfully, a minority of them will in face be far right nazi cunts - making it easier to paint all of them as some sinister force.

The puppet show is nearly over, just row over and go back to dreamtime. Your bed awaits you. Perhaps the Russians can help us remember what a real war is like? It's been so long, so very, very long. Isn't that way the propaganda channels keep returning to 'the greatest generation'? Dust it off and see what happens. It's a good year to die, right? Good thing we have so much to die for, that should give us comfort in the cold nights to come... after the fires af course. How many pages left in this script? Not many it seems.

Ah geopolitics.

Did Putin not see this coming? Was he too busy with the olympics? Or does he sacrifice the west of the Ukraine (and let the EU/IMF and US bail them out) in order to keep the east? The Russians will defend the Crimea, no doubt about it. And the Russians learnt from Afghanistan that you can't fight a nation when the people there hate you so perhaps that is why they let the west of the Ukraine go while they know they have the support of the people living in the east.

The Europeans are playing a dangerous game cause they could end up without any gas coming from Russia. This might then trigger fracking in Europe. Win win for oil and gas companies. As usual.
