Russia Fires First Retaliatory Salvo, May Limit Ukraine Food Imports

Tyler Durden's picture

Russia represents over 25% of Ukraine's exports and is the divided nation's largest trade partner. As Ukraine remains deep in its self-described "pre-default" state, the economy languishes vainly in the hopes of a trade deal with 'someone' and a bailout from 'someone' else. However, the IMF's first move to bail the nation out has now been met by a subtle punch to the country's kidneys as Interfax reports that Russia threatens to limit food imports on the basis of "veterinary and phytosanitary risks."

Via Interfax,

Russia and the Customs Union could temporarily limit increased-risk food imports from Ukraine, given fears of loose safety control, said Sergei Dankvert, head of the Russian veterinary and phytosanitary oversight service Rosselkhoznadzor.

"My Belarusian colleague and I are extremely concerned about the situation in Ukraine. We do not rule out that curbs could be introduced on the imports of products of high veterinary and phytosanitary risks from Ukraine," Dankvert told Interfax after talks with his Belarusian counterpart Yury Pivovarchik in Bryansk, and telephone talks with Ukraine's Deputy Agrarian Policy Minister Ivan Bisyuk.

Restrictions could also be imposed on transit shipments, he said.

The conditions in which Ukrainian experts are working arouse queries and doubts that their work is being done properly, especially amid reports of African swine fever infections, he said.

Cooperation between veterinary and phytosanitary experts is largely based on trust, Dankvert said. If the conditions in which the Ukrainian service is working do not improve, moreover, if its leadership is replaced, the business contacts, built over the past few years, may be affected," he said. "They were not always cloudless, but our Ukrainian colleagues were trying to work for expanding trade between our counties," he said.

It might seem like an odd reason to suddenly do this but of course the timing is perfect - especally as the anti-Russian provinces tend to be the most agricultural and farming based - as opposed to the eastern (more industrial) regions that are wealthier and more pro-Russia.

But as a reminder, a great deal of the nation's wealth resides in non-pro-Europe eastern Ukraine...

While ukrainians, russians, and kazakhs starved, wheat and other crops were sold to the west, and proceeds went largely to pay back loans from ny and london banks, at least a number of sources say so.

I think there is truth to that  Johnny. As I remember this period from reading history, the soviet's had no capital to industrialize with, but they went ahead and began building industry anyways, without capital to buy food, the soviets instead stole it from peasants all across the USSR. Not just Ukraine either. I remember a Siberian pesant who was sentenced to the gulag as an enemy of the people for growing cucumbers and trying to sell them in town. The food was taken by special soviet squads recruited to steal all food in the USSR and hand it over to the regional soviets.

The starvation was USSR wide, cities where industry was being built got the foods, the peasants starved or where sent to gulags.

I read in particular about the Ukrainian famine, and indeed, it was caused by the soviets taking peasants crops. The regional soviets, Ukrainian communists, employed local squads from Kiev and Karkov to do the food stealing.

Your USSR soviets had their share of Ukrainians. Unfortunately, many communists were jewish, since most jews were city dwellers. The young jewish communists played a big role in going into Ukrainian villages and stealing all the crops. The hatred of Ukrainans for jews goes back further than that though. During the age of slavery when peasants were serfs, Ukrainian gentry and nobility each hired jews to manage their estate's finances and to collect what serfs owed their masters. Here in lies the deep seated hatred of Ukrainian rural people for jews in general. Plus jews owned the shops, and cheated peasants on a regular basis. Even in novels from those times, the landowner's Jew was the most hated figure. Ukrainian genty and nobility made use of jew's financial skills to grow rich off of the serfs of Ukraine.

Two things, the serf system and the soviet attacks on peasants combine to make Ukrainians hate communists and jews.

Thing is there are some droughts going on in North and South America in case anyone hasn't noticed. There is a market for the Ukrainian agriculture depending the crop part of the question I don't know the answer to is how much of a food processing industry and distribution capacity does the Ukraine have and where are the plants located if they do. If they don't have a large enough capacity to process all that food if the Russians don't buy then they lose money customers or not. There are other issues like is land largely used to grow specialized crops best suited to the land and environment, stuff like that.

Without knowing more the whole food industry might be largely set up to handle local/regional based demand and not capable without infrastructure to handle high volume global demand = crops wasted if Russia doesn't buy.

On thing is certain the Ukrainian people will not lack for food to eat over this.....

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement Feb. 24 saying the new government in Ukraine wants to use "dictatorial and sometimes terrorist methods" to suppress opposition, RIA Novosti reported. According to the ministry statement, the Ukrainian authorities are calling for a ban on the use of the Russian language and trying to abolish opposing parties, shutter any media organizations that disagree with the ruling party and drop restrictions on neo-Nazi propaganda.

Limiting the use of peoples' native language and allowing neo-Nazi activities (as the new E.U./U.S. installed "authorities" did in a matter of days after seizing power through force) is not going to endear them to the 30-40% of the nation that speaks other languages, and a majority does not want West Urkrainian fascists to oppress them.

I think people should bear in mind reality here. Reality is that a western backed radical group, Ukrainian right wing, with much popular backing in west Ukraine has carried out a violent take over of government. There was no election, this was pure force of arms. Kiev parliament is voting without many of it's members present, as they are threatened with death by the radical right wing Ukrainian nationalists. That they control Kiev does not mean they control Ukraine in total. They must use force to bring the entire country into line, then hold an election, and hope they win.

But as for now, Kiev does not control the East or South of their nation. This is a problem for the revolutionary government in Ukraine. If they use military force to run tanks into the East and South, they will have started civil war. Need I remind you, the East and South have declared Local Government control over provinces, and have declared the revolutionary government in Kiev invalid. They refuse to accept laws from this parliament. The East and South have declared themselves "self financing", you must know that this means they will pay no tax to Kiev. The revolutionaries control parliament, but not the tax base. Russia has stopped bailout payments to Kiev. So an already bankrupt revolution has no tax base and no bail outs, except for the EU, who will be forced now to pay ALL of Kiev's government expenses.

Today in Sevastopol and yesterday in Karkov and other Eastern and Southern cities, thousands of people have rallied to support their local governments in their bid to resist the revolution in Kiev.

Please, consider that this revolution is not over, nor is it won by the USA/EU, yes they hold the West and Kiev, yet half the nation is not under their control, that half has the industry and productive enterprises and the tax base. Their local governments have declared they will not accept laws and rules passed by the unelected revolutionary government.

Surely you see this story is just started. Russia's best bet is to coordinate with it's allies in the East and South, to not pay any more bailout money, to let gas prices rise to market levels. And to declare that any invasion of lands not submitting to the revolution will not stand. As an example, Crimea's parliament has declared the Kiev revolutionary government invalid, Crimea will accept no controls from Kiev, will defend it's borders from Revolutionary forces and will cease paying tax to Kiev.

If you think, as some posters do, that the west has just captured Ukraine, then you are deluded. History offers many lessons on revolutions, this Kiev revolution is one of many that have happended in modern times, victory for the revolution is anything but certain. After all, they must now beg the EU for money, all the money.

Last thing, the Army, and it is big, has remained on the sidelines. Should Kiev try and use it to invade the East and South, with US backing, I suggest a world war is not out of the question. And, remember, 1/2 the army are not from the west, nor loyal to Kiev. If fighting breaks out, it may be inside the army when orders come down to shoot down Ukrainians on orders of the revolutionaries.

This food thing is just a minor blip, of little consequence. Ukraine's split between East/South/Crimea and the West. This split IS the STORY, follow that with care, that is the real news here.

Worth to add that Russia is firmly against any further military escalation on its western border and their attempts will be to grind Ukrainian Zio-sponsored thugs by economic methods - blockages, raising tariffs, imports rationing etc...

Whatever Putin is trying to accomplish, this will backfire on his own people who are now going to pay more for food if they can still find and afford it.

Ukraine, Syria And Global De-Dollarization: USD To Go Down And Gold Up

We do hope that Ukraine will not ignite the real war, but you can be assured about the asymmetrical moves with the heavy weaponry of  The Financial War. Here where we are coming to the ongoing flight of physical Gold from the West to the East and the coming De-Dollarisation. Democracy - so well presented by Netflex with its "House of Cards" production - meets countries with the special destiny, where elites are not hiring actors to read teleprompters, but making all the dirty work by themselves.

Russia can always get its food from someplace else -- and they should, albeit at higher cost to Russia.  Ukraine needs its food for now.  They may think they need to keep up the trade, but at this point it's a question of fiat for food.  Good trade for Russia, bad trade for Ukraine.  The fiat may not be worth anything eventually.

"I think people should bear in mind reality here. Reality is that a western backed radical group, Ukrainian right wing, with much popular backing in west Ukraine has carried out a violent take over of government. There was no election, this was pure force of arms."

The protesters were fired upon.  It was a pure force of arms.

The protesters did not elect the government to be corrupted into what it became under Yanukovych.

"Please, consider that this revolution is not over, nor is it won by the USA/EU, yes they hold the West and Kiev, yet half the nation is not under their control, that half has the industry and productive enterprises and the tax base"

The people protested against corruption.

Martin Armstrong: "The latest reports stated that the people will not leave the Square until this is resolved. No member of the so-called opposition is being accepted by the people for they were not in the Square.  The people are looking for someone who has NEVER been a politician for they are now also against career politicians."

Money:

There is always a hard-core fantasy element that spouts such non-sense.

Eventually they will be driven from the square by the new regime.

"Here comes the new boss - same as the old boss."

If you want to purify a country's leadership today, you have to do it a la the French Revolution, with rivers of blood flowing down the street from the severed heads of the oligrarchs.

The protesters drew first blood.

As for who fired on the protesters, the restraint shown by the government was considerable.

This new western ukraine regime will show no such restraint in the next round of protests, once the common people realize they've been sold out.

The protests to come will be deemed 'right wing' and discredited b/c it will include roughly 10% neonazi fucks who were A-okay last week.

Cute trick.

I don't trust Ukrainians because they're skinhead and nazi inspired racists; but they are right to throw their Russian sponsored corrupt Politicians. Putin and his gang of 120 billionaires are more vile than their Germanic rulers --the Romanovs --who kept Russia like indentured slave state in antebellum South.

When the world economy sinks into debt-deflation(it must as all the money is hoovered by global elites), Russia will plunge into chaos as it has no economy other than resource exploitation.

Russia reminds me of America in a way in the 1950s.   The other night I had to stop at a Wal Mart that mostly sells food and some trash from China.  It was a third world hell hole filled with EBT card holders - all O voters.  This is Amerika now.

Yesterday in MN, I went to the hockey center for the free skate with six Russians, one Ukrainian and another American.  I don't skate so I got saddled with the kids which is fine and we found a way to entertain ourselves in some Zamboni shavings where we made snowmen together.  Not one word was brought up about the goings on in Ukraine by the kids or their parents.  I didn't ask about it either as everyone seemed to be getting along just fine and also because it is NONE OF MY BUSINESS as an Merican.  Well, I will be damned, they CAN get along with each other if no one is stirring up shit.

It even appeared that everyone was having fun together.(gasp)  They are nice folks and their kids are fun to play with.  No one even needed a sniper rifle.  That is what confuses the hell out of me.  It appears that Ukraine is just one big bloody argument over who's central bank they will use.  I never envisioned any revolution to determine who the central bank would be.  Quite the opposite, I figured a revolution would be to get RID of central banking.  I must be missing something.

+1 for that Volkodav.  Mrs. M is full scale Russian born and raised in Pyatigorsk.  I asked about Ukraine and she went on a roll.  It should have been recorded and posted here.  There was a quite a bit in there about Obama and do you really think your Navy was in the Black Sea for the Olympics and that Obama should fuck off.  There were a lot of "fucks", "fuck offs" and "fuck Obama" statements in the conversation and I hardly had to say a word.

There was something in there that was like, "Get your fucking military out of our faces."  I appears we are in agreement and she had a good rant.

My wife is also Russian-born, as a soviet citizen, and we've both been to Ukraine, and do business there. Most Russians I've met don't give a care if Ukraine becomes a full-fleged white star on the flag of the US, or a yellow one on the EU flag.

Something about "I don't care if the bribes guarantee a successful business, I'd rather run my own business myself, without 'help' from Moscow."

Of course, most Russians view Obama the same way they viewed Medvedev... a puppet... not worth speaking of, especially when they know very well who runs the circus.

Nice that your wife is "that kind"... There's a reson she left, and it ain't (never been) you.

With friends like Putin, who needs enemies, right?

The IMF... International Monetary Fools... I knew it wouldn't take long before those masters of disasters moved in... they love shit like this, it's their only reason for existence. I was in Thailand all during the 97-98 meltdown and the IMF was the boogeyman Thai mothers used to scare their children into line...

So, since I can post what I want, here goes:
