More APCs And Helicopters As The Airspace Closes: The Latest Developments From The Ukraine
While the latest official development surrounding the Ukraine crisis is that in under two hours, or at 3pm, the UN Security council will meet to discuss the situation in Crimea, Censor.net, citing Christopher Miller, the editor of Kyiv Post, reported the following:
Russian vice-admiral declares war with Ukraine in Crimea, reports @censor_net. For real? Can he do that?http://t.co/eaU0LbGJgu
— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) February 28, 2014
Below is the google translated story from Censor:
In Crimea, Black Sea Fleet commander of Russian Federation Alexander Vitko announced the beginning of the war with Ukraine. Such information TSN confirmed MP from the "homeland", the former chairman of the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Cemil
According to him, on Thursday, February 27 in Sevastopol Vice Admiral Vitko gathered all the generals and said, "We start war with Ukraine. "
About the Jemilev meeting only became known today, February 28.
In addition, according to the deputy, the morning without permission border of Ukraine, trying to bypass finders crossed four helicopters from Anapa. Moreover, he noted that Ukraine is now Russia does not oppose, and Ukrainians are on the verge of very dramatic events.
"The only way out here, I think that we have the strength to impose emergency rule, bring our troops and take control of all state institutions," - said Cemil.
He asked about acting Ukrainian President empowered Commander of the Armed Forces, Alexander Turchinov.
"Now I'm with Turchynov said that what we have military units, the forces necessary to throw everything in the Crimea. Elsewhere us no threat yet, enter PE and throw under control. But again, there is concern that we provoke, that we may not have enough forces, "- stated the MP.
He believes Russia will not go to full-scale war, but "the country must defend their dignity, basic rights of its citizens."
"I constantly call and say: if Ukraine can not do something, let us at least a weapon," - said the ex- Head of Mejlis.
Moreover, he noted that the Crimean Tatars no sense to stand with machine guns and pistols against "armed to the teeth with the Russian army" which means "let the people to death."
Is this merely a provocation from the Tatar source, or a glimpse into the endgame? We will find out soon. In the meantime, here are some of the other more recent developments from the Ukraine:

- UKRAINE URGES RUSSIA TO RETURN MILITARY UNITS TO BASES

Itsa Party!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gotta laugh at the "can he do that?" part.
Well, of course not! Everyone knows that hostilities "just break out" for some unknown reason.
So that's why the stock market is up today? Maybe we need to blow up the NYSE in New York to get it really surging.
a US aircraft carrier being attacked by russian forces should be good for a 1,000 point rally by the end of the day
Looks as though Ras-Putin has called it right. He will do what he likes because he knows they are all too pussy to face up.
Even these Navy Seals at the border can't find a good reason to go into the Ukraine!

Mmmmmmmmkay.
the article on cnn (next thread) has a dead link
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-12-22/cnn-claims-americans-want-secur...
reaches the archived article
note the "-0" appended to the end of the URL
Not sure whats up with that
Something's gone haywire - the date in the URL is from December, as is the article itself.
Paging sacrilege...
Did we just get a peek past the event horizon of the memory hole?
According to a link from that article Mustafa Cemil, the man quoted, is a lifetime hardcore anti-Russian activist, who has spent 15 years in prison for his views. So he certainly may have an agenda, perhaps trying to create a virtual "False Flag" with rumors to rally people to a preemptive confrontation with the Russians and pro-Russian Ukrainians.
Obama: likes to talk, likes to make ultimatums, likes making empty threats... Does not act.
Putin: doesn't talk, doesn't make threats...
Just acts.
Putin totally disregards empty threats made by the West.
Sends warships.
Mobilizes 150,000 soldiers.
Puts airforce on combat patrol.
Seizes Crimea in broad daylight.
Then publicly denies it on the news wires.
Putin: Your move Obama... Your fucking move. Where's your red line at now? What are you going to do? Your threats are a joke, you have no power here. You talk too much. We do not fear the US any more, this is not 2002. We all know you can't afford another war let alone get it through congress.
Ukraine is having a vodka sale?
Iteresting that with something this big our president is sooooooo quiet...
His line has been crossed and he's being dared to say something.
This was a very good post on a website I thought I would share it:
I'm from Sevastopol, was born there and lived there for the most part of my life. I couldn't speak or even understand Ukrainian till I was about 17 years old, we never learned it in school, the TV was both in Russian and Ukrainian and I, as well as the others, watched russian-speaking channels. Western and Eastern Ukraines were apart for about 700 years and fought multiple wars with each other, First and Second World Wars including. I understand you, westerners, support new-born Ukrainian democracy but what you don't understand is that this new Ukraine is actually exclusively Western Ukraine. We speak Russian in the South-East, they speak Ukrainian. They are of absolutely different culture. What's more, they hate Russia which is our Motherland. We fought for it in the Second World War and our cities were burned to the ground, millions died. They fought for the Nazis, for what they thought was civilization and Europe. And now they are the same. What's more, they are fanatics, they want their Ukraine so much that they'll willingly sign the association with EU that will bring extreme poverty abd degradation as it already did with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Baltic states, Romania, Bulgaria and to a lesser extent Poland, Hungary, etc. Well, we are tired of being poor and humiliated. We are Russians and we want home.
I'm also half-jewish. My jewish grandfather fought in Sevastopol. He was an officer in the Black Sea fleet. He knew he wouldn't survive if captured. And he wanted to spend his last bullet on the nazi. So, he always carried a capsule od cyanide with him to take his own life when the last bullet has been used. He survived but the majority of his family was murdered by nazis. When they came here, the firsy thing they did was they made all the jews gather at the stadium and then murdered them all, women and children included. Every single one.
When you think of Ukraine, think of the wetern ukrainians willingly and enthusiastically helping the nazis in their atrocities. Tatars did the same. They hunted partisans and jews and killed them or gave away to the nazis.
They still hate Russia and russians thinking of them as barbarians and long for "civilized" EU. Well, farewell. They'll find only more poverty and serfdom.
I've written this lengthy post because I've been to the USA and respect ordinary americans for their love of freedom, their morals and industry. But the West doesn't always understand what's going on here.
"We are start war with Ukraine"
That is sound about right.
@Boris
Was that your translation of the article out of The Censor? Got to love Google translate.
"We are start war with Ukraine"
That is sound about right".
Today in Ukraine there is no legitimate authority and any legitimate president or ministers of Internal Affairs. Today in Ukraine there are only rebels, buyout force seized power in Kiev.
And also in Ukraine, there are regions that have remained faithful to the Constitution, democracy and legitimate democratically elected Ukrainian President.
I repeat: The authorities in Kiev are now thugs and criminals. It's a fact and it does not depend on opinions EuNATO of USA . All these criminals, have committed particularly serious crime. They have committed armed coup and eventually they all will be arrested and prosecuted.
Including an accomplice of criminals that today nazyvetsya himself "Ukrainian President ." He is not the Ukrainian President. He is impostor. It will be sent to jail , along with all the other members of his criminal gang.

Vlad has gone too far. I want to see his face when NATO blasts him with at least three lines in Tweeter. That is at LEAST THREE LINES, I tell you. And just wait until Obama gets his teleprompter plugged in. He is fully prepared to say he is disappointed and ANGRY.
He will also try to pitch Obamacare to the Russians, but I doubt anyone will be intrested.

Let's ask out secretary of state, he luvs getting involved in other folks' business (especially when ketchup is involved!)
Yeah we only know too well how the Crimean Tatars treated the Slavic kids, read about fate of the captives about half way down
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean-Nogai_raids_into_East_Slavic_lands
to quote from there "The Tatars slit the throats of all men over 60 years old who were thought to be incapable of work, forty-year-olds were saved for the galleys, young boys for their pleasure and girls and women to continue their kind and then later to be sold."
So why should I feel bad for the Tatar Tots when they did this...
"the old and infirm, who were not worth much money, were given to the Tatar youths like rabbits to hunting dogs for their first military practice and were either stoned to death, or thrown into the sea or killed in some other way."
It sure is

Pussy Putin is pissed. What a little bitch.
What is that, in the current situation, you meant by the word "Ukraine":
- Illegitimate government rebels impostors, in the face of criminals who seized power in Kiev undemocratic, unconstitutional, by armed force?
- Or regions, that remained faithful to the Constitution and laws, the democratically elected President of Ukraine?
How do you think: Should there be rebels who committed an armed coup in Ukraine, arrested and prosecuted?
This is turning into quite the party.
You can always count on a party when CIA BlackOps are involved in destabilizing a country! USA, USA, USA!
www.TopTheNews.com
...and the Russian admiral and generals knew they couldn't throw a proper party without inviting Mustafa Cemil to their meeting.
Mustafa is just pissed off because they threw him out of the party after he got so drunk that he shit his pants.

I didn't realize that was a problem. That would explain a few things. I thought people stopped inviting me to parties 'cause I'm one of those "gold bugs".

What's really going on of course is a private party, much like the "negotiations" near the ned of the movie "Spys Like Us."

Same as it ever was...
Ain't that the truth. The real party is usually in some darkened back room.
That said, I'm sure the lights will be on at Langley over the weekend.
The rightfully elected government of Ukraine asked for Russian military help. What's the big deal?
Yes, "help". That is all. Now, let Russia come set up some "help" in your back yard and is "help" you out. Is utter fantastic when tyrant neighbor state is "help" out.
Why should the US have a monopoly on 'helping'?
USSA or USSR, same is different, no?
"The rightfully elected government of Ukraine asked for Russian military help. What's the big deal?"
Criminals, who seized power in Kiev undemocratic, unconstitutional, with arms in their hands, through bloodshed, have no right to make any statement on behalf of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. Criminal rebels illegitimate.
Everyones going to the party have a real good time...

Whowouldathunk that the person to alienate more brown people from the blue team would be a brown person?
At least the Russians are apparently not moving armor or artillery, given their recent examples of leveling everything before sending in APCs to do cleanup.
You do remember they happen to have a whole fleet over there, don't you ?
Plenty of artilery on those ships...
There's not really that much artillery (appropriate for surface engagements) in a Russian fleet, their flagships carry about 60 s300s and a pair of 5in guns, so they can pummel a coastal town, but they're not going to flatten anything large and inland unless they have a huge cache of land based weapons beyond what would be appropriate for the RORO ships assigned to the Black Sea Fleet that aren't deployed elsewhere.
Several ships with a pair of 5 in guns will do just fain for artilery support. It's not WWII, and the Russians don't plan to roll the front line all the way to Berlin.
Besides, why flatten somenthing you intend to keep, which also happen to have a friendly majority more that eager to do the dirty work for you ?
Ukrainean military, very dubious at their best, has just symbolic assets in the area. Those guys won't pick a fight that makes no sense for them, despite orders...
The "revolutionaries" in Kiev expect the West to do their heavy lifting. I suspect they'll become very dissapointed over time...
They don't need tanks to take what's already theirs. The Ukrainian military and police are already on their side for the most part, remember? Eastern Ukraine is already Russia's. It's not like they are going to see any resistance either.
And how exactly would the Russians deploy a 5in naval gun (with a range of ~20km) against a mortar platoon a mere 5km outside of town on the far side of a itsy-bitsy little hill, or even against a handful of guys who may have liberated a few RPGs a few days ago on the far side of that same simple obstruction?
The APCs and helicopters can be effectively deployed against the former, but tanks are preferable against the latter.
Moreover, if one seeks to conquer without firing a shot, or by firing as few shots as possible, and sacrificing as few resources as possible- the threat of overwhelming force is far preferable to relying on a golden hammer. It's not as if the Russians haven't in the recent past demonstrated exactly what happens when one crosses that line with them, when they employ that specific tactic.
Sometimes the last war isn't the best model, but the planners certainly aren't making it up on the fly, or relying on strategies that defy experience.
You've seen too many bad Vietnam movies. Try some oldies, like "The Longest Day" for a change.
Armchair warriors are fun for a while, but they invariably end up boring you to death with all sorts of insignificant details.
I'm sure the Russians have planned for these (and many other) contingencies, long before starting the game.
Relax ! It will be fun to watch the news this weekend, especially in HD...
My TV is dutifully boxed up in the standard issue Swiss bomb shelter, and I haven't set foot in movie theater since 1998 (had to look up the release year - time does fly).
War is a science (and an art), there is room for artistic license, but the laws of science are far more rigid (and less forgiving when collided with).
If you think that's an insignificant detail, you should drop the ad hominems and retreat to your own armchair. Of course they planned for such contingencies, the Russian armed forces have a huge staff whose full-time job is working through scenarios and details. My point is that the build-up is not complete until more pieces are in place.
The US only attacks the weak and the vulnerable. Like the sanctions on Iraq that killed between 1.7 and 2.2 million Iraqi children according to CIA Iraq analyst Susan Lindauer who blew the whistle on 9/11 and spent a year in jail. Kerry may soon say that Assad is not destroying his chemical weapons fast enough and send in a few missiles to send a message to the Russians. After all, the Nobel Prize winner almost lied his way to a war with Syria just a few months ago:
Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has published an article demonstrating that the US government and President Barack Obama knowingly lied when they claimed that the Syrian government had carried out a sarin gas attack on insurgent-held areas last August.

It is amazing that gold is not skyrocketing with all this war talk.
The conclusion of this situation was so predictable, that I doubt this whole thing was not planned and agreed upon behind closed doors a long time ago. Sensationalism aside, Ukraine was a done deal.
well those incubator babies wernt going to liberate themselves

It's called "positioning your assets" in the field. When everybody wakes up after a confusing weekend, they'll find a "de facto" Russian control upon all locations of importance in that area.
Then, denunciatiations will start; the whole diplomatic ballet... democracy, blah, blah... peoples will, blah, blah... teritorial inviolabilty, blah, blah...
At that point, the situation ON THE GROUND will be long settled. By the way, Crimeea is ridiculously easy to separate (and defend from outsiders) once you control a few choking points...
Now we know why the 'masked gunmen' were locking down the airport...warships to cover the sea ports and put boots on the ground....secure airport to deliver more power.
meanwhile, on Sociopath Street where its all good.....
The UN senior military officer is a Russian. Putin will know everything that goes down before Keith Alexander does.

"Saw" is the past tense of "see", NOT "seen".
same difference akak!
Um, no it is not.
"Saw" is the past tense of the verb "to see" --- as in for example "I saw that article yesterday" --- whereas "Seen" is the past participle of the verb "to see" --- "I have seen that article already". Past participles are always preceeded by some form of the verb "have". It is not the same thing as the simple past tense at all, even if a huge number of (ignorant) people believe otherwise.
Personally I prefer "saw'd" which makes you both wrong.

US intelligence doesn't think there's going to be an invasion:
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/02/27/u-s-spies-no-russia-isn...
"US intelligence doesn't think."
FTFY!
Snark isn't analysis.
That's not what the article says.
You don't even need to read beyond the subtitle of the article (hint "openly").
Move, Counter Move
This is not an "open" invasion (yet). But if the US puppets in Kiev engage the local militias in the Crimea, then the Russians also wouldn't be "openly" invading, CIA CYA (unless you are Dick Cheney and looking for Waldo's WMD, then the MIC will fall on its sword and take the blame).
Spook-speak, Diplo-speak, Legal-speak, Bankster-speak (all dialects of the fascist language group)
"But if the US puppets in Kiev engage the local militias in the Crimea..."
Two problems with that:
1) "US puppets in Kiev": This administration isn't competent enough to have "puppets." Who do you think Obama is, Kissenger?!?
2) "engage the local militias in the Crimea...": Why on earth would they do that? They couldn't hope to defeat the Russians, and even if they did they'd be in "control" of an ethnically-Russian region that supports Putin. All that trouble in exchange for what? Ukrainian pride?
1) I would distinguish between the administration and the establishment.
The administration may believe they have puppets in place, but what they actually have is aspirants to thrown of a kleptocracy. Once crowned the prime motivation becomes maintaining the crown. This necessarily entails cutting the best deal possible, with the big fish and amassing enough loot to keep the other aspirants at bay.
The establishment, however, most certainly has puppets in place, but in supporting roles. No administration's control of the establishment is absolute, it is free to sack the Secretaries of State, Defense, and the DCI, as well as their deputies, and dictate policy, but sometimes actions do not coincide with policy when the fiefdoms have different priorities than the administration.
2) Ukrainian "forces" could engage the Crimean locals either probitively where a miscalculation could draw in the Russians. Or puppets could engage the Crimean locals as a result of someone's puppet attempting to escalate the situation. It's a very crowded playing field with a lot of competing interests at stake, beyond just the competing and factious elements of the new coalition "regime" and those who prefer the Russian alternative, Russia itself, the US, Poland, the rest of the EU, et al.

Wave your finger some more and keep telling yourself and the JCS that it's really working this time!
