This is probably a grossly oversimplified view of military history and reality, but doesn't it feel like ever since the US got faced on Syria, its like the cat is out of the bag now and no one takes the US seriously anymore? I've felt it coming on for a long time now, but lately its palpable that China and Russia have a free hand and they know it. Obama's speech today is further proof.
I see Iran has sent warships to graze the US coast (first time ever). Even second rate powers with important friends do as they please.
Not that US should involve itself in Ukraine, but hypothetically if some vital US interest was involved America would be fucked because it is:
- Too morally unsure of itself to form a coherent, consistent argument for action or to see it through the mess that would be involved (note that in contrast, Putin just identifies what he wants and takes it - he calls it "Russian interests" where the US would feel the need to make up some bullshit story about human rights and freedom)
- Too politically inept to manage a high-stakes game of brinkmanship without being outsmarted (see Syria) or fucking it up and causing WW3.
- Too poor to afford to stage the actual war anyway (fighting Russia or China invites a run on the US dollar system in a way that pissing on Syria doesn't).
America is Russia and China's bitch now. Watch them prove it.
This is my biggest worry. Obama is so grossly incompentent he could actually get us pulled into a WWIII.
