The Invasion So Far: Visual Summary Of Russian Forces And Movements

Tyler Durden's picture

Moments ago Interfax reported that two Russian anti-submarine warships have appeared off the coast of Ukraine's Crimea region, violating an agreement on Moscow's lease of a naval base, according to a Ukrainian military source as saying. Then again what else would a Ukrainian military source say. The source added that the two vessels, part of Russia's Baltic Fleet, had been sighted in a bay at Sevastopol, where Moscow's Black Sea Fleet has a base.

So imagine two extra anti-sub ships off Sevastopol in the map below which until this latest update from Contemporary Issues and Geography, was keeping an accurate running update of all the most recent developments in the staggered Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

Ukraine asks for protection of NATO

http://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2014/03/1/7016885/

Don`t forget this:

1997 Charter on a Distinctive Partnership
between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Ukraine:
14. NATO Allies will continue to support Ukrainian sovereignty and independence, territorial integrity, democratic development, economic prosperity and its status as a non-nuclear weapon state, and the principle of inviolability of frontiers, as key factors of stability and security in Central and Eastern Europe and in the continent as a whole.
15. NATO and Ukraine will develop a crisis consultative mechanism to consult together whenever Ukraine perceives a direct threat to its territorial integrity, political independence, or security.
16. NATO welcomes and supports the fact that Ukraine received security assurances from all five nuclear-weapon states parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear weapon state party to the NPT, and recalls the commitments undertaken by the United States and the United Kingdom, together with Russia, and by France unilaterally, which took the historic decision in Budapest in 1994 to provide Ukraine with security assurances as a non-nuclear weapon state party to the NPT.

Poland will ask for it, Baltic states will ask for it, Romania and Hungary will ask for it.

Invasion of Ukraine=Poland 1939 or WW3.

Lots of weasel words in there. Basically says that NATO will be happy to hold hands and sing kumbaya for Ukraine. Odds of NATO getting involved militarily asymptotically approach zero. Besides, Obama is to busy destroying the USA from within to waste time on Ukraine.

That would deal an unfix-able blow to NATO and US standing on the world stage. It will not happen. You will have WW3 first.

The Budapest memorandum is fundamental. If security assurances are nullified Iran will never give up nuclear weapons. Putin`s invasion bluff was called by the Kiev authorities (most likely under direct US recommendation). I say Russia will fold. If they don`t, WW3.

Even Turkey's close to internal political implosion.

Relying on distant powerful allies to intervene has always been high-risk, but against a nuclear aggressor - forget it.

And Nuclear-Umbrellas don't work because the umbrella holder is gonna quickly realize it does not actually want to be involved in a nuclear war thanks.

"Look, we like you guys, we like you a lot in fact, but after careful consideration we regret to inform you that we're withdrawing the commitment to supply a nuclear-umbrella. All the best and yada-yada-yada ..."

In other words, we offered you the umbrella assurances to make sure you would not be building your own nuclear deterrence, so that we could manipulate you, and you fell for it, and we apologise profusely that this has resulted in your being a disposable minor front-line pawn of our geopolitical gamesmanship, and that your national strategic defense was unfortunately completely non-existent and backed by a load of old bollocks.

Try not to be so gullible and .. err ... better luck in the next life.

Poland,
Romania,
Serbia,
Turkey.

Non-neighbors would include

Japan,
South Korea,
Saudi Arabia,

All of these countries will continue to say they rely on defense assurances from the US and EU. All of them, right now, are either dusting off or strengthening their national 'Plan B' defense strategies. This is not a good world.

This is still about Syria IMO.   Syria BY ITSELF wasn't enough to make the Russians fold.  Now they have to deal with Ukraine.  Watch for Syria to RE-IGNITE.

This is about spreading the Russians thin so that they cannot keep Assad in power.  Kuwaiti Nat Gas to Europe via Syria.

Unless of course you believe that it is just a coincidence that two of the most critical Russian proxy states (Syria and Ukraine) just happen to have uprisings within a year of each other.....

They aren't being Georgia'd now? Yes I think the U.S. might come to their rescue under the right circumstances. Ukraine just has to be smart enough to create those circumstances. I checked out that link you posted and all our generals were smiling.  The russians were stone faced.  When I was in the Marines everyone took their picture with a stone face.  The old combat vet DI's had  scowles on their faces.  The series sgt a guy named GySgt Omak, had a full on warface in his photo. I saw a pretty recent graduation book and most of the recruits had smiles on their faces and all the command staff did.  It surprised me.  There has been a huge shift in mindset from what was my experience 30+ years ago.

If Putie Pie's Navy and Armor starts getting plinked then we have a problem.
Now "the war is not just costly but expensive."

The best thing at this point is a "good clean invasion followed by a drunken occupation with lots of Full Retard." A bad thing is an actual division of Ukraine with the Russians pulling forth the artillery "to take out those pesky Kiev'ers who refuse to surrender."

China ready to strengthen all-round cooperation with Iraq: FM

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/china/2014-02/24/c_133138823.htm

BAGHDAD, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here on Sunday that China is ready to strengthen its all-round cooperation with Iraq.

"China will continue to promote its friendly traditional ties with Iraq, deepen the political mutual trust between the two countries and take advantage of each other's economic strengths," Wang said during his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

"China firmly supports Iraq's efforts to safeguard its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, accelerate its political rebuilding and national reconciliation and fight against terrorism," Wang said.

For his part, Al-Maliki said Iraq thanks China for its unwavering support on the country's reconstruction.

That sounds logical but it will not happen. If borders are re-written in Europe Hungary (Transylvania, southern Slovakia) will ask the same, Romania will ask the same (Moldova, Northern Bukovina, Ismail and Northern Maramures, Timok Valley), Germany will ask the same (Alsace & Lorena), Serbia will ask the same (Kosovo), Poland will ask the same (western Belarus and Ukraine) and there are many others. If we start re-writing the borders we open Pandora`s box.

Today this popped up: http://tinypic.com/r/zyeih4/8

Get your facts right.
USA (hiding behind NATO) started changing European borders by taking Kosovo from Serbia and giving it to separatists (in western MSM: freedom fighters. In reality: heroin mafia), despite protests from Rusia, China, India, all of Southern America and even Spain, Romania, Greece, Cyprus, etc. that this is breaking international law and will create dangerous precedent.
USA unilaterally recognized Kosovo's "independence". After bombing an UN member country without Security Council approval. Country that posed no threat to USA, was USA ally in two WWs and which population generally and genuinely loved USA and it's people.

So, all this whining now is just hypocritical.

All you guys swaggering about with your conspiracies that have been in place for hundreds of years need to count humans.

Yes, count humans.

There have never been 7 billion before and every one of them eats a lot of calories every day, and those calories were shipped to them with oil.  Cities don't feed themselves anymore with suburb farms.  Those are parking lots now.

The farms are hundreds of miles away and the food arrives by oil

He who has the oil rules the world.  Putin has the strongest hand.

BINGO!!!

From the Guardian March 2010

"The UN said that urbanisation is now "unstoppable". Anna Tibaijuka, outgoing director of UN-Habitat, said: "Just over half the world now lives in cities but by 2050, over 70% of the world will be urban dwellers. By then, only 14% of people in rich countries will live outside cities, and 33% in poor countries."

China and India are looking at Africa for farm land. Even Saudi Arabia is in Ethiopia growing rice. The Ukraine has always been the bread basket of Russia at least in recent history.

Meanwhile in the US there is a land grab by corporations to control all food production. Learn about GAP, and The Food Safety Act. Bye Bye small producers, but it is for your safety, and the children.

While you're exactly right about 20% LEU being standard fuel for medical isotope production reactors, it's nonsequitor to connect that with chemical weapons use 30 years ago by Iraq.  Any modern hospital uses wide variety isotopes for both diagnostics and therapeutics, with clear top being thyroid ablation with I-131.  While there may have been "tens of thousands" of those victims in 1980s, there can't be many still alive remaining in Iran.  Iran is a nation of young people.

Any intelligent person should know that the only country in the Middle East with an ILLEGAL nuclear weapons program is our "very good friend" Israel, the same people who helped bring down the Twin Towers.

I'm amazed that so many people here at ZH stupidly parrot the lies of our government in "thinking" Iran has a nuclear weapons program of any sort.  They really don't need anything other than a contingency plan for a South Africa-style HEU gun bomb that might be quickly made with ~100 kg of the many tons of sub-90% HEU unaccounted for after the FSU collapsed.

Probable outcome is Crimea will be declared an independent state by referendum overseen by Russia (which it would probably win fairly in any event), and eventual Crimean union with Russia in a few years after the dust settles.
