Obama And Putin Held Phone Conversation
Just out from the Kremlin:
On the initiative of the US, a phone call took place between Vladimir Putin and the President of the US, Barack Obama.
Under discussion were the various aspects of the extraordinary situation in Ukraine.
In response to the concern expressed by Barack Obama regarding the possible use of Russian armed forces in the Ukraine, Vladimir Putin drew attention attention to the provocative, criminal acts of the ultranationalist elements, in effect encouraged by the present authorities in Kiev.
The Russian president stressed the existence of real threats to the lives and well-being of Russian citizens and numerous compatriots located in the Ukraine. Vladimir Putin underscored that should the violence spread further to the eastern regions of the Ukraine and the Crimea, Russia reserves the right to protect its interests and the Russian-speaking population living there.
Then Putin told Hollande largely the same thing.
Here is how this same conversation looked like from the perspective of the US. Via Reuters:
U.S. President Barack Obama told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia had committed a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty by sending forces into Crimea and warned of consequences.

And in other news, the US president may or may not be present when needed.

Well, USA violated UN Charter in 1999 by attacking Serbia without approval from Security Council and then forcefully changing internationally recognized borders of an UN member by unilaterally recognizing Kosovo's "independence" (mother of all puppet regimes), thus setting an precedent that was so convenient for Putin n the case of Abkhazia. Will be recycled for Crimea, too.

I never said the US acted in good faith in Serbia, Iraq, Afganistan. Russia is not acting in good faith in Ukraine. Both impersialist powers have interest, strategic in case of Russia, oil in the case of the US.

Yet, USA had no native American nationals in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria... Nor were those countries in recent history parts of the same country together with USA. Nor they border USA.
Don't forget that Crimea was alway a part of Russia and was ADMINISTRATIVELY attached to Ukraine only as recently as 1954.
So, comparing this with NATO pretty blatant recent rampage would be intellectually dishonest.
I know the history of Crimea. Of course it was part of Russia and has 61% ethnic Russians. But, knowing this, why did Russia sign the Budapest memorandum in 1994? If Ukraine had been a nuclear power today would Russia had invaded Crimea? The ethnic question does not hold well in Europe where you have large ethnic minorities in many countries. This opens Pandora`s box, as tomorrow Hungary can invade Slovakia, or Poland invade Belarus to reclaim territories lost after WW2.
Russia has a international law problem here, not a ethnic justification problem. What might be very well justified by ethnic reasons goes against international law. If countries do not uphold international law we are back in the dark ages. And of course this rings true for the US. Furthermore, the ethnic composition is a coverup for the strategic importance of Crimea for Russia. Why doesn`t Russia invade Kharkov, it has a large Russian population as well.
Crimea is an unsolvable problem now due to the 1994 Memorandum. Ukraine gave up over 5000 nuclear warheads because the major powers of the world GUARANTEED its territorial integrity. If the major powers of the world, imperialists as they are, can`t keep their word what happens next?
If the Ukraine were a nuclear power today, the US wouldn't have fucked with it in the first place.

So, all that you mention: Hungary, Slovakia, Belarus, Poland, and I would add Catalonia, Corsica, Bask, Kurdistan, Northern Ireland, South Tirol... was made separatism hot spot because USA, not Russia, established an International Law precedent. Russia is just playing US playbook now.

At best he could have been an LBJ-type of President: someone who knew how to get things done. Instead, he got the ACA passed - his only major issue - because Ted Kennedy had done all the heavy lifting for him. Kennedy knew how to work the Senate (even if only the Democrats, in this case).

I am not there, and make no claims to know the soul of the average Ukraine citizen. In fact, is there an average Ukrainian? It is a regionally divided country, and I suspect most would prefer to go on about life in peace.
Recent events, however, do not seem to be coming from a deep popular uprising, but more from carefully crafted plans to foment the disturbance and a political coup. I don't know who the good guys are, or even if there are any good guys. It's not my fight, and I don't want any part of it - including financing it. Since I know there is a good chance it could affect me tangentically, I have been paying attention, and it feels a little like deja vu, just in a different location. Many of us are sick of this militaristic meddling by America and we want to see it stop. Wedon't love Putin, but are ashamed of our leadership. We don't hate Ukraine, but plainly see what folly awaits if we stick our beak in.
So, there wasa an uprising in Keiv. Were they Nationalists, Socialists, Facists, Nazi's, or just paid goons. I don't know, but have my suspcions. Either way, it is not for the true interests of the 'average' Ukrainian. It is NEVER a good thing to be living in a war zone.
