Horrific Knife Attack In China Leaves 33 Dead (130 Injured)

In one of the deadliest acts of terror in China in recent memory, a group of ten knife-wielding assailants attacked passersby at the Kunming Railway Station in the southwest of the country on Saturday night, killing at least 29 and wounding another 130. Police also shot and killed four of the attackers and captured one more. The other five are on the run, according to reports. State broadcaster CCTV said two of the attackers were women, one of whom was killed by police and the other captured.
Local Kunming government officials say that evidence at the scene point to separatists from China’s restive Xinjiang region, in what is being called “an organized, premeditated violent terrorist attack.” China’s state media outlet Xinhua quotes domestic senior Chinese security official Meng Jianzhu as vowing to “severely punish” the attackers “according to law.” Those comments were later echoed by President Xi Jinping, who also heads China’s security commission. The Global Times reports that Xi has asked “law enforcement to crack down on violent terrorist activities in all forms.” It also notes that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his hope that “those responsible will be brought to justice.”
The attack follows an incident in Tiananmen Square last October, in which a man drove an SUV carrying his wife and mother into a crowd and set it on fire. That attack killed five people and injured 40, and profoundly shocked the nation. Beijing said that the attack was the work of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM). Speaking with The Diplomat last year, Uyghur American Association president Alim Seytoff rebuffed that claim, questioning whether the ETIM even existed. Uyghur rights groups in general have denied claims that Uyghur separatists are behind the recent violence.
Saturday’s attack comes ahead of the annual meeting of China’s parliament on Wednesday, a time when security is usually tightened. Chinese officials have had trouble containing violence in Xinjiang, where local Uyghurs chafe against the growing Han Chinese presence, religious repression and heavy-handed security. Until recently, however, incidents were largely confined to within Xinjiang itself. If the Kunming attack is linked to Xinjiang, it could represent an escalation in Beijing’s troubles with the region, with the violence now spreading to other parts of China. Kunming is in Yunnan province, which has not previously been associated with terror incidents.
Victims of the Kunming attack say the attackers, dressed in black, burst into the railway station and began slashing at people randomly. Photos show the blood-stained floor of the station strewn with luggage, and medical personnel treating the wounded. Some eyewitnesses said that the assailants were carrying multiple blades, while others reported the attackers stabbing their victims multiple times.
The regional government in Xinjiang announced last month that it would be doubling the police’s counterterrorism budget for 2014.

I train at 50 yards with hand guns and to retreat if range gets less than 30 yard. I also train to shoot mostly knees, feet and skulls.
I think pepper spray and stun guns might have helped to defend against this knife attack better than a hand gun unless the attacker is hit above the neckline or in a knee.

I have been training my entire life, and I have also trained with some of the best knife fighters in the world, and I spent 20 years doing Philippine martial arts and I an expert at small-arms and I'm a sniper.
I have been around special forces men my entire life, and they all, well those in the know all know to fear a trained knife man the most. This is why dumb fucking cops are trained to say, "I want to see your hands and if the guy moves, you shoot him", ... any other scenario you have dead cop.

An athletic assailant can charge you from 10 yards and be within arms reach within 2-3 seconds easy. 20 yards is only 3-4 seconds. That being said I doubt many of us will be in a situation where such an assailant would be that motivated to keep coming while they see you drawing.

Contrary to popular belief this is not an insult to police as they can not be everywhere at once and most response times are reasonable; but does show need for some knowledge of personal defense. My daughter started working at our 911 call center a few months back and recently purchased a pistol as she was alarmed at the calls where the victim was terrified but had no way to defend themselves.

What the fuck kind of thought experiment is that? It's worthless. Five armed criminals walk into a jewelry store, pointing their weapons at the owner. She opens fire. That's not a thought experiment, that's real life - and what your hypothetical situation doesn't take into effect is the overwhelming psychological shock of a surprise, as well as incoming rounds. Well, since you're the type of person who likes to debate by arguing against a point and then asking the other person to prove his point first, I'll answer your question by asking a question? What if an open-carrying person goes nuts around a bunch of other open-carrying people?
What a stupid argument this guy is making. A person going nuts is going to open carry no matter what. As in, openly carry a gun into a crowded place and then open fire. He is going to do that rather open carry is legal or not. That argument makes it sound like a guy is going to be carrying around a gun because its legal, then go nuts and start shooting. People that do shit like that don't pay attention to gun laws, unless it is to seek out a place that doesn't allow people to carry. Like that crazy-assed old cop that killed that young guy in the FL theater in an argument over texting. Unfortunately a lot of people(and cops) can and do pass the CCW test- but would fail the psych test that should go with it. Disclaimer- I am a 2nd Amendment devotee but will never apply for a CCW- to me every problem then becomes solvable only through a gun.
Sorry to introduce a crass practical concern, but who determines what the psych test covers and how it's scored? The psychologist community? They don't want anyone to have a gun.

Which would you prefer, real freedom, of the illusion of safety which is brought about by a govt trampling on your natural rights? Choose carefully, though, because those two things can't coexist. You gotta pick one and one alone. I will choose to take my chances with real freedom, but that's just me. The 2nd amendment was not written with the qualifier that you had to be examined by a govt appointed psychiatrist to exercise your constitutional right to bear arms.

Criminal insanity is not psychologically determined, it's determined by criminal acts or threats thereof.
You have to make a decision where to draw the line and the decision is probably going to be wrong. Would it have been good for the Aurora theater shooter to be prevented from getting a gun? In retrospect yes. Now, how would you have differentiated between him and the other 1000s of socially inept guys in Colorado who really only intend to defend themselves, not to hurt anyone else? I don't think you can, and I certainly don't trust psychologists or politicians to make such a fine tuned determination.
