John Kerry Slams "Incredible Act Of Aggression", NATO Says Russia "Must Stop"

Tyler Durden's picture

Just in case Obama's Friday message of "costs" should Russia invade Ukraine, which it did, was lost in translation, here is NATO with the clarification, and more harsh language:

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen convened an emergency meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels on Sunday to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

Ahead of the meeting he issued the following statement:

I have convened the North Atlantic Council today because of Russia's military action in Ukraine. And because of President Putin's threats against this sovereign nation.

What Russia is doing now in Ukraine violates the principles of the United Nations Charter. It threatens peace and security in Europe. Russia must stop its military activities and its threats.

Today we will discuss their implications, for European peace and security, and for NATO's relationship with Russia.

Afterwards, we will meet in the NATO-Ukraine Commission.

We support Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. We support the right of the people of Ukraine to determine their own future without outside interference. And we emphasize the need for Ukraine to continue to uphold the democratic rights of all people and ensure that minority rights are protected.

Ukraine is our neighbour, and Ukraine is a valued partner for NATO.

We urge all parties to urgently continue all efforts to move away from this dangerous situation. In particular, I call on Russia to de-escalate tensions.

And just in case both Obama and NATO were misunderstood, here is Kerry appearing on CBS' Face the Nation laying down the law, and even more harsh language:

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday condemned Russia's "incredible act of aggression" in Ukraine and threatened "very serious repercussions" from the United States and other countries, including sanctions to isolate Russia economically.

"You just don't in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped up pre-text," Kerry told the CBS program "Face the Nation."

Kerry, however, added that Russia still has "a right set of choices" that can be made to defuse the crisis.

"It's an incredible act of aggression. It is really a stunning, willful choice by President (Vladimir) Putin to invade another country. Russia is in violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine. Russia is in violation of its international obligations," Kerry added.

Kerry said U.S. President Barack Obama told Putin in a 90-minute phone call on Saturday that "there will be serious repercussions if this stands. The president ... told Mr. Putin that it was imperative to find a different path, to roll back this invasion and un-do this act of invasion."

Kerry said G8 nations and some other countries are "prepared to go to the hilt to isolate Russia" with a "broad array of options" available.

"They're prepared to put sanctions in place, they're prepared to isolate Russia economically, the ruble is already going down. Russia has major economic challenges," Kerry said, as he also mentioned visa bans, asset freezes and trade isolation as possible steps.

Some great soundbites: we can't wait for the White House to release the obligatory photo op, which we assume would look somewhat different than this.

Russia's response?

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Sunday when asked for a response to harsh words from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who condemned Russia's "incredible act of aggression" in Ukraine. "No comment at the moment," Peskov said.

Just laughter.

I think Mr. Kerry's speech is shallow and stupid. US, G8 and NATO just can't isolate Russia - it's obvious.

dick cheney used the newly free EE countries to expand NATO and deploy missiles aimed at Moscow, only a few minutes away. its like the Russians in EE are getting payback for Cuba in spades, and we got away with it this time, while they never did.

now we find out how much of a neocon Obama is, just like we found out how much of Cold Warrior Kennedy was in 61. turns out quite a bit. if someone in the presidents party doesn't provide leadership, the GOP will trash him, or her, thats the nature of the game.

so this is more dangerous than it looks, wounded egos, lame duck leaders, a faltering EU economic plan which is expand or perish. i guess its better to be Greece, than the Ukraine, economically, to be bailed in at the periphery, than left out in the cold. poor bastards think they're getting on the cruiseliner, while the rest of the passengers are heading for the lifeboats.

The threat is to the south.  Iran and Syrian "issues" may be affected by Putin's adventure.  Iran likes to think it is secure due to Russia, but no troops wanted on their soil.  As for Syria, it bombs on but it too can not resolve without Russia withdrawing its support of the regime. Putin has more than one poker in the fire. His little fleet of the west is over tasked and outgunned, including his new subs which is carefully tracked and reported by the Sixth Fleet. The warm water port in the Med is his goal, and he thinks he can afford it  - today. After all, who wants the Crimea but land locked power with a small navy?  Probably Putin is correct, but at what price in Russia and internationally ?

Ukraine is bankrupt, they need to trade with the west, nothing east available at Russia's prices. But what about currency? Whose? and how much? and for what?  Watch out, the Russian alignment is about to become questioned all along its western front.  BTW, Israel can reach Iran and I suspect they too are thinking strategic thoughts today.

Found interesting comment worth sharing:

"Russian f@cking annihilated 1.5 million in Afghanistan and only lost 15,000 killed. Another 3 million fled to neighboring countries of Afghanistan . It's not civilized Europeans THIS ARE RUSSIANS ! RUSSIANS destroyed their enemies for centuries . All of the most powerful empires were destroyed by Russians .

Napoleon fagot - Russian army destroyed him . Army that conquered the whole of Europe. Hitler - who called Europe its military playground was destroyed by the Soviet Russians .

Russian currently own 1/6 of the land of weak humanity. They live in unbearable weather conditions and they absolutely don't care . They are GODS OF FROZEN HELL . They are not afraid of winter , heat, hunger , rain . They kill when they are cold and when they are hungry . If you tell them that one can not live in such cold weather  - they laughed at you in the face and go play snowballs .

This are RUSSIANS motherf@cker ! Do you think the Spartans steep ? This means you never saw Russians . They conquered most of the world, they conquer the oceans and space . They can incinerate the mountains and continents with their nuclear weapons . Never mess with Russians , run, run as fast as a motherfucker can. It is their nature to be the gods of war , chaos and hegemonic lords of destruction. It's in their blood , it is their instincts . Lucky for us that their instincts sleeping for a while . Pray to all the gods , that they slept on.

Never trust a Russian . They look good and harmless, polite. But give them a reason and they will destroy the whole world and will laugh at its ruins. Because of their endless winter Russian did not even realize that the world has ended.

Russian wanted to start a war against the whole world a few decades ago . And this did not happen , because they decided to give peace a chance to live a little longer . Run, run while you can ..."

Russia has never been very good at conquering anyone except its near neighbors.  However, they have been impossible to defeat on their own ground.

Napolean and Hitler both failed with a Russian invasion due to the weather and the tenacity of Russians fighting in that weather.  In Hitler's defence, you have to acknowledge he was, at the time, fighting a two front war, with the Russians in the east and Britain, US, and allies in the west.  Had he been fighting just Russia, he probably would have won.

There are other north Europeans who are used to that weather.  Think of the Finns.  Tiny Finland destroyed a  Russian invading army because the Finns were even better in that frigid weather on their own terrain, and they were fighting for their freedom.

Agree with your point in principle, but your inclusion of "Vietnam" is a false example.

There was a country called South Vietnam, with its own established government.  It was under attack from its neighbor North Vietnam, using both infiltration of troops from the north and encouragement of insurrection (rather like what has happened in Kiev).  The legitimate government of South Vietnam, asked (maybe begged) support from the US, which the US provided.  There was no US "pretext".

I notice you, rightly, don't include Korea in your list.  The situation in Vietnam was very similar, except in this respect.  After an armistice was reached between North and South Korea, the US kept large numbers of troops in the country, blocking further invasion from the North.  After a peace agreement was signed between North and South Vietnam and the US, the US withdrew most of its troops and when North Vietnam broke the truce, the then Democrat controlled US Congress refused to honor the US treaty requiring it to return to support South Vietnam.

Somehow I hear those movie lines in my head as I picture Putin taking that "stern" phone call from Obambi.  This could really be the start of a major shift in global power as the Heartlland's premier land power teaches the world's premier sea power a little lesson on internal lines of communication.  Ukraine, Belarussia, maybe even the Baltic states and Romania could be in Putin's hands if he just realizes how weak the West's position really is.  Interesting times.  Imagine if China were to flex in the ECS and SCS right about now.

Thanks, Chaos_Theory, for the reply because it seems that around here, if you've only been a member of the club for , oh, 9 weeks or so, one should expect only to be spoken over, not with. Anyway, coughcough, the Paris event in 2015, UNFCCC, is where, after this little military power flex is demonstrated, the political power will be flexed. This has nothing really to do with 1913 or the cold war, it's ultimately about 2112, 13, 14, ... and the WARM war.

All roads lead to Paris.
