From Kiev To Crimea: Visualizing The Last 2 Weeks In Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

The last two weeks have seen events escalating at a rapid pace in Ukraine with the center of attention quickly shifting from Kiev's deadly protests to Crimea's "invasion." With Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warning that Ukraine's new leaders seized power illegally and predicting their rule would end with "a new revolution" and more bloodshed, we thought the following infographic would provide some context for how Ukraine got here so fast.

Via AFP

The rhetoric continues to strengthen from the Russians...

As Reuters reports, Medvedev said that while Viktor Yanukovich had practically no authority he remained the legitimate head of state according the constitution, adding: "If he is guilty before Ukraine - hold an impeachment procedure ... and try him."

"Everything else is lawlessness. The seizure of power," Medvedev said on his Facebook page.

"And that means such order will be extremely unstable. It will end in a new revolution. New blood."

The chicken is going to Kiev?

I hear the Russians want to thank him for his kind letter to them and his continued concern for the Crimean people by offering him a luxury villa in Pripyat ( Chernobyl's ghost city).

Taking everything into account, what's the over/under on Wilbur Kohn being the new Archduke Ferdinand?

He'd be the perfect black hors... uhm, swan, providing the much needed pretext for unleashing the Kraken. Any thoughts?

The only sad consolation for Americans, is that the clowns in Washington may pause their destruction of the US while they go about aiding the destruction of foreign lands.

Now that Crimea is secure look to see Odessa being the next big thing.  Its a big seaport also and its region connects to Transniester the breakapart region of Moldova which is mostly Russian unlike the EU stooge Romanians that live in Moldova.  If there are any casualties I expect it to be there since the supposed NATO mercenaries coming into Kiev will head down there to secure a port for their Nazi brethren in Western Ukraine. I am expecting some real fireworks.

I'm not really sure about Russia's computer expertise, if they haven't been able to infiltrate his Facebook account yet, what does that say about their cyber warfare capabilities?  Have to wonder if Facebook and Twitter ever thought they would be the conduit of choice for WW3 saber rattling/war fog.  #unintendedconsequences.

Edit: Ironically - Turns out Russia Today was hacked. With Nazi kicker.

"..Some years ago, this author received a letter from a media correspondent, with the following quotes pertinent to this article:

“It is a great shame that more people are not aware of what has become the unchallenged power of global capitalism. It has a very pernicious effect, particularly on the thinning of state power and the weakening of democracy……Sadly, understanding the role of the past on the present has become a heresy of much contemporary journalism. Modern technology, which allows instant news reporting, has further segregated journalism from a proper appreciation of historical dialectics and causation”.

The implication here is that the media of today must conform to the wishes/needs of its corporate capitalist ownership – and say what it is paid to say. This is clearly the explanation for the apparent ‘irrationality’noted in the opening paragraph of this article."

Regarding those maps that show which language is predominantly spoken in what parts of Ukraine - Russian is also #1 spoken language in parts of Brooklyn, NY.  Does that mean the russian-speaking people want to merge Broklyn with Russia?  And what would the USA do should Putin land 6000 paratroopers and claim Kennedy Airport?

Russian language range is not the only factor to determine pro- and anti-EU sentiments in Ukraine. There are Ukrainian speaking citizens of the country who are pro-Russian and against association with the EU. I am sure you can find Russian speaking Ukrainian citizens who are pro-EU. All this means is that it can get very messy if it comes to a civil war in Ukraine as it will be hard to figure out friend or foe on both sides of the division.

Good comment.   I would think these complications have been considered in the plan.   Its confusing that the west would openly back pro nazi nationalist groups so easily when they are the biggest destabilizers.   Now that  reports of purges of ideologically impure apparatchiks and Yushenko supporters is underway, and as you point out the mixed loyalties of the differing regions,  distrust of a government with questionable legitimacy,   the west might as well support Pol Pot............nevermind

it will be hard to figure out friend or foe on both sides of the division.

This is further complicated since ethnic Russians descended from the Ukraine.

Putin knows that the DC US can't use the military because:

1) Too busy in the ME

2. Saving for use against the American people.

3) Too broke and can't borrow anymore from China

"Save a wall or tree. Use a guillotine."

The infographic reveals selective amnesia by its publisher.

Just a few of the important points missing from the chart:
- all of the pre-18th Feb stuff;
- US state dept selected the next president;
- who armed, trained, organised and paid the rioters;
- Unarmed police got shot at (some killed) by rioters;
- President and members of his party were threatened, beaten and shot at;
- President's removal was undisputedly unconstitutional.

It was a violent overthrow of a freely-elected President.  The Constitution allows impeachment for very specific events after a very specific procedure, none of which has happened.

The current US/EU-installed regime represents a minority of the Ukrainian people.  It is completely illegitimate.

Crimea was the easy part for Russia.  The messy part is taking control of eastern Ukraine without significant casualties.   The western hate machine is cranking up the anti-Russia propaganda way louder than the Georgia lies.

Everyone here loves to rag on Obama, but he ain't running the show.  Whoever IS running the show has so far accomplished what they set out to do.

Getting a NATO/EU-aligned western Ukraine, even a rump state, on Russia's border is a huge win.  Sure, a lot of Ukranians are going to die to get it, but hey, eggs/omelettes, or rather pawns/chess game...

Russia knows it's under attack.  It should cut off the gas now to force the west to recall the dogs of war.  If they lose western Ukraine to the west they might as well call it a day and appoint a Goldmanite as their central banker and sell their resources to multinationals.

IMO, too early for Vlad to play that card. Wisely he's giving these idiots enough rope to hang themselves and have this thing collapse under its own weight and lack of real foundation. He'll only play it if and when he needs to.

Give the man his due, he has nerves of steel, especially in comparison to any of the bankster whoreboys in the "West".
