The Phone Call

Tyler Durden's picture

The phone-calls are flying. On the heels of yesterday's Obama-Putin "discussion", today has seen Merkel drop him a line (with the resultant claim that Putin has accepted a "fact-finding mission" despite all evidence to the contrary); and then Merkel, Obama, and Cameron got on a party-line to discuss "sanctions". In the face of this seriousness, we suspect, however, any of the calls to Putin all had a similar dialogue...

h/t @SooperMexican and @LibertyBlitz

Lots of "Calls" in the last 24 hours...

  • *OBAMA CALLING MERKEL AND CAMERON TODAY ON UKRAINE: OFFICIALS
  • *MERKEL CALLED ON PUTIN TO RESPECT UKRAINE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY
  • *NATO CALLS ON RUSSIA TO DE-ESCALATE TENSIONS, RASMUSSEN SAYS
  • *ITALY CALLS ON KIEV TO MAKE EVERY EFFORT FOR PEACE, STABILITY
  • *ITALY CALLS ON RUSSIA TO AVOID AGGRAVATING UKRAINE SITUATION
  • *AKHMETOV CALLS FOR UKRAINE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY TO BE ENSURED
  • *UKRAINE'S PM CALLS FOR PEACEFUL RESOLUTION TO CRISIS
  • *UKRAINE'S PM CALLS ON PUTIN TO REFRAIN FROM STARTING WAR
  • *OBAMA CALLS HEADS OF FRANCE, CANADA, TO DISCUSS UKRAINE CRISIS
  • *OBAMA CALLS ON RUSSIA TO DE-ESCALATE TENSIONS IN UKRAINE
  • *UN SECRETARY GENERAL CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE UKRAINE CALM: NESIRKY
  • *U.K.'S HAGUE CALLS FOR `DE-ESCALATION OF TENSIONS' IN UKRAINE
  • *TYMOSHENKO CALLS FOR ACCORD WITH EU TO BE SIGNED IN DAYS
  • *KLITSCHKO CALLS FOR GENERAL MOBILIZATION IN UKRAINE
  • *RUSSIA LAWMAKERS CALL ON PUTIN TO DEFEND CRIMEA POPULATION: RIA
  • *CRIMEA'S PRIME MINISTER CALLS ON PUTIN TO ASSIST: INTERFAX
  • *U.S. CALLS ON RUSSIA TO PULL BACK MILITARY FORCE IN REGION
  • *MERKEL CALLS FOR RESTRAINT OVER CRIMEA
  • *CAMERON CALLS PUTIN TO DISCUSS SITUATION IN UKRAINE

President Barack Obama discussed the Ukraine crisis with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a phone call on Sunday and underscored:

"(The primary point) in all of his calls has been to underscore the complete illegitimacy of Russia's intervention" in the Crimea region of Ukraine, the official told reporters in a conference call.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Obama planned shortly to make the same point in conversations with the British prime minister and the Polish president.

Laughing too hard. If market goes green this is your fault Tyler2.

I wonder what those Russian special forces are going to do with all those guns & mortars that are being liberated from the Ukranian Navy and Air Force armories.

On a second related note, do you think Vimpelcom being gifted all those East Ukraine cell towers is being priced into the market open ?

I spent several hours dealing with Charter Cable Service the other day.  When Obama is out of the White House, he can go work for them.

Obama: Is your box plugged in?

Putin:  Are you really asking me that?

Obama: Can you unplug the box, and then plug it in again?

Putin:  I'm just going to invade Ukraine now ...

It dawned on my that a lot of Ukrainians have seen how Putin turned Russia around, how the standards of living improved once he reigned in the oligarchs and clawed back what they had stolen.  He did a phenomenal job in Sochi. Then they look at their country and see Tymoshenko and her crooks send the oligarchs to their cities as representatives LOL. Can these usurpers in Kiev be any further from reality.  They first banned other languages except Ukrainian then they changed their mind, whats to stop them from reversing and even do much worse once they are in full control.  This has all the makings of a comedy except the actions of Nuland have resulted in 100 people dead and more may follow. Young people are very impressionable, and for the West to lure them with false promises so they put their lives on the line is a war crime in my opinion.  Nuland should be dragged in front of the War Crimes Tribunal, but she won't because the place is stacked with her friends.

Anyways Crimea is a piece of Eden

Not only that, Russia and China are finally coming to realize that the calculus of MAD in the Cold War era has been permanently altered by the ascendancy of China.

MAD is still there, but it is now overshadowed by the development of a Mexican Standoff. Russia and China can tag team the US into either committing suicide or giving up Empire and this dust-up in Ukraine is the perfect bookend to the Diaoyu Islands tension in the East Pacific.

The US either commits nuclear suicide or gives up hegemony and enters into economic decline like all ex-empires.

Bingo Bingo BINGO! This is why I love ZH. If you look long enough you will find the truth. All of it makes sense when you tie it together at the nation level. I was shocked that Putin didnt see Ukraine coming. HE Did and the US just stuck its dick in a grinder. Putin wants the world....So does China. They are tag teaming the US. In order for this to happen both China and Russia must be convinced they could take the US alone at any away game. After doing a little digging I think China or Russia could indeed take us on any foreign turf.

The new Navy lazer weapons are really just a quickly cobbled together defense from the Chinese hammer of god weapon  DF-21D . Too little too late they have the advantage.

If we had not wasted over a decade policing the world (asset stripping for bankers and oil CO's) maybe we could have been ahead. If we had not given China our whole industrial base perhaps we could have kept up. Instead its time to roll it up boys and girls US dominance is over. The empire is done. The dollar is toast.  Russia and China have put the US out of the game. I think collapse in less than a year. More likely only a couple of months.

Soon we won't have a pot to piss in.  The main danger is our irrational lashing out, a last gasp of purposeful deceit and subterfuge.  False flag or bombs away is possible, because we don't know what else to do.  Unbelievable how low we've sunk.

I like this theory because it provides plausible answers to many of my personal questions.

Why the fuck did McCain and Horse face go all in supporting the (alQueda) Syrian rebels? The blowback off that alone could have had them at the gallows. That was strait up treason guys - we were and still are fighting them. I think they had no choice....... Syria was WWIII............. aaaaannnnnddddd we lost. What is Putin doing dicking around in Ukraine? Putin likes to come off as an over the top man's man and this Ukraine thing just seems like small potatoes for a guy like that. His spies could have stopped or taken over that shit at any time. I think this Ukraine business is just some type of MASSIVE kabuki theatre to inform the whole world at once of just who won WWIII. Explains how Putins counter coo has been this bloodless as well. The Russians and Chinese read the Project for the New American Century and came up with their own plan and it worked. The best offense is a great defense. Without our carriers to project force the USA is cut out of the game. The us dollar can no longer be supported by the military alone. All our puppet govts can see the light at the end of the tunnel and just to be sure they do -- Putin is putting on the worlds greatest show.

This would mean - No upcoming war(unless Obummer is suicidal)

WalMart and Target are going to increase prices a lot real soon.

Gas is gonna get really expensive too.

This also explains DHS and militarized LEOS to some degree - after all the govt. knows 100% some crazy times are on the way. I think the DHS is really a domestic army designed to defend America and help police after the crash. It was possible that we could have been invaded once successful counters to our Navy were developed - especially with our military spead all across the world.

Also explains NSA to some degree. Their real job is to help Washington control the populace and monitor opinion to prevent total breakdown as the new reality arrives.

Also explains that dumb ass speech that Obummer gave yesterday - They knew this was coming but Putin moved the transition date way up without warning  :)

Lastly why didnt we just build better bombs ect.? China took all our industry. That was what made us great. Without it innovation is much much slower. Industrial might makes military might period. Thats why. Dont worry if all goes well we will be doing great in another 10 - 15 years. Back to work on productive projects and much happier I think.

+1000

Someone in another post said this whole scenerio was playing into US hands - that having Putin active in Urkaine would distract him and keep him from being able to act in Syria. That this was the USA's plan.

I call bullshit.

Russia and China are working the US over on two fronts both close to THEIR front lines for good reason. In doing so - this has the advantage of keeping US forces spread thin and far from their own source of supply - the continental USA. it weakens them relative to Russia and China's position. All military forces are strongest closest to their own ground.

This coupled with what appears to be impending civil unrest in the US (seems to me that the situation in Conneticut is coming unhinged at the exact same time as the rest of the planet is) means that the USA is handling potentially major conflicts both internationally and domestically. This is very bad for the American people as it will make them incredibly vulnerable economically/finacially as well as politcally and socially.

While I am not conerned with the USA being invaded (an outside invasion force would galvenize US solidarity against a common foe) the fact that it is falling to pieces on so many fronts makes its international monetary/military power vulnerable to splintering and collapse.

Surely the powers that be in the US are intelligent enough to see this which leads me to believe that domestically those involved with what is going on there are pawns that are being steered in the direction of civil unrest - that their military is being deliberatley spread to thin and lead to destruction and that powers within the US itself are dedicated to destroying US military power, social cohesion (going on for decades anyways) and economic hegemony.

It's so obvious even a half retarded TSA agent can see it.

In short - if things keep going like they're going the USA is fucked.

Hell - if I didn't know any better I'd say I was on the NSA's pay roll myself..... shit maybe I am and don't know it..... it's a fucked up world ain't it?

PS - Please forgive spelling and grammatical errors. Half a bottle of wine is messing with my vision and motor skills..... good wine though....

If US Policy was really smart, they would realize that the Gazprom & Rosneft/Siberneft global offshore cash accounts could easily be frozen/captured with immediate hard currency implications for Putin.

If NATO does not send support, then the 94 accord is putched, and pretty much invalidates the whole US position of the last 10 years with North Korea, Iran and other countries who were offered US currency & trade for their nuclear/Rus tech.

In the end we will either  see 1.) UN Security council fracture and NATO being questioned as a defense structure or 2.) Putin will need to decide if it is worth being isolated further, or should he go all-in. If he goes all in, which he may, then the whole thing will go right into Nukes & ICBM's. 3.) Putin has been learning "go" from China and can open up the Syria front again. or North Korea.

My bet is China lets the Norks go rogue again. It's their best strategic play. Let the Norks do another nuke test, then lob a missle over Japan. Keep heating the pot until it's almost boiling. Then when 0zer0 is stepping on his pee pee trying to backtrack from his red lines, China can swoop in and play the peacemaker. Offer to control the Norks in return for some US concession. I would say it's not some little islands in the China sea, but something much bigger. I think the prize is Taiwan. It's China's next Hong Kong. A huge economic prize because of all the Taiwanese business contacts all over the world. And 0zer0 will gladly cave to get his foreign policy failure off the front pages. Never let a crisis go to waste. The world has learned from the 0zer0 doctrine.

This is called " Goodbye dollar , hello gold."
You can not take from Russia gold and energy.
Money - is energy. Because energy generates products . Because the goods - an energy that was concentrated in certain commodity forms . Thus, having the energy, you can give and use universal notes (fiat money) from this energy. Or you can claim the gold as payment for energy - petroleum gas. If the fools in the West will be wise enough to pick up the money in Russia , then the next day , they will be able to buy oil and gas only for gold. Checkmate.

The Friday phone call between Barry and Pooty was intercepted and is posted here to bring greater clarity to our situation... The following exchange was made as Barry was brandishing his phone while Pooty was dining on chicken Kiev: Barry:  Stop, or else.... Pooty:  Or else what? Barry:  or I'll say stop again.... Pooty:  I don't think that will be effective... Barry:  Don't make me put away my reset button! Pooty:  Surely, you jest. Barry:  That's it!  You have now insulted me by calling me Shirley.  I will now perform a parry with my Mont Blanc.  Take that! Pooty:  Oh, nice move, but still ineffective. Barry:  This phone is powerful.  If I have to, I will call my sycophants in the media and tell them to say bad things about you! Pooty:  Ouch!  That will hurt my feelings... Barry:  Well, now we're getting somewhere.  Listen I've got to wrap this up otherwise I'll miss my tee time.  I'm handing this over to my capable staff.  They have all recently completed the Disney course on National Security & International Relations. Pooty:  Are they authorized to negotiate on your behalf? Barry:  Absolutely.  I told them under no circumstances are we to give away any more than Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and half of Germany.  That's it and we're not budging! Pooty:  You have nerves of steel and all the cunning of a fox.  You are a worthy adversary. Barry:  I'm glad you finally realize that.  Don't make the same mistake again, or I'll have to say "stop" again.  And next time, I'll mean it! Pooty:  You can trust me, Barry! Barry:  Goodbye..... Pooty:  Checkmate. and he hung up the phone... Barry then turned to his staff and asked "Checkmate?  What the hell does he mean by that?  We're not playing checkers (draughts) here.  Oh well.....get my clubs and tell the Choom Gang I'm on my way."  With that, he left the Oval Office....

As I said earlier today, the Western Coup plotters thought they had it made when they got Kiev to fall. But they didn't extend their siege far enough. Russia controls the areas that have the majority of the population, tax base, finances, economy, and military. Without these power centers, the West has Kiev, which is essentially an empty shell. It's Kiev and the Western Coup plotters that are going to get a real lesson in siege warfare now.

Ukraine has two choices. Russia or EU. It is same situation again for many eastern european countries, you can't stay independent between those two forces, neither one of them would allow it. It would be as impossible as to ignore both Stalin and Hitler at the dawn of WW2 while you are located exactly between those two.

I would say Georgia was to test the waters, this move is as bold as it can be. Putin will go as far as west allows him to go. This is aggression, as simple as that!

Eastern Europe is in a predicament. We would choose independence every single time but it's not an option. We are between the rock and the hard place. It's a reality we have to deal with. If any of you is familiar with Russian culture, then you would understand it has very little in common with western values(not being sarcastic, I know there is not much left). But i guess it is pointless to explain it any further. This place is Putin frenzy.

"This is the essence of an existential question for a wider audience: Is the West (especially the United States) willing to start what would likely be a truly uncompromising fight in order to win Crimea, as well as the eastern and southern Ukraine back from Moscow? That is not likely. It is much more likely that the West will behave exactly the way it did in 1938 when Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler demanded that they have Czechoslovakia, the independence and territorial integrity of which had been guaranteed by the Soviet Union and France in the League of Nations.

At the time, the issue was left for Britain’s Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to mediate, which resulted in Czechoslovakia being left to Hitler to tear apart. Was Hitler satisfied with that? No. Neither will Russia be satisfied with this. After Ukraine, Russia will only have one target – the Baltic states.

It is naive to maintain that the West can influence Russia by imposing sanctions and freezing funds of the ruling kleptocratic clique. Putin & Co. have transferred their assets to a safe place by now, and Russia can withstand a long economic blockade stoically because the average Russian, unlike Europeans and Americans, is able to survive on vodka and potatoes alone. But it is Germany which will be unable to stay in business without Russian raw materials."

First you have China and Russia doing war games together (nothing new but increased in scale).

NORKs rattles sabre and act crazy (nothing new but increased scale).

Chinal rattles sabre over islands and Japan issues (nothign new but increased scale).

US "pivots" to Asia.

West pushes on Syria.

NORKs and China make noise in Pacific.

US gives up Syria (due to a lot of reasons) and continues "pivot" to Asia.

US riles up Ukrainians and we get the mess of the past weeks.

Russia takes advantage of the "pivot" and makes a land grab.

Does the US "pivot" to Europe?

No:  Does Russia keep grabbing?

Yes:  Does China take islands, Taiwan, or Japan?

They got us boys.  We look right and they kick us from the left.  We look left and they kick us from the right.  All the while we dont' see the cancer spreading within.  I wonder how our history will be written.

Hitler was a creation of London and Wall Street Eastern Establishment elites.  They wanted fascism to cement their control over the planet and to destroy the US Constitution that Roosevelt was using to crush them.  The Hitler Project got out of control just like installing a fascist regime in Ukraine will get out of control.  A faction of US and British elites recoginized that the Nazis had to be stopped so Roosevelt and Churchill took charge, pushed the Hitler Project elites out of the way and destroyed the Nazis along with their junior partners in Italy and Japan.  The Russians took the biggest hit losing 20 million people.

Putin sees the new Nazi front on his border as the Western financial elites using fascism again as an instrument to dominate Russia to bring them under control.  You are acting like Putin is the aggressor.  To you the Western bankers have no involvement.  Putin sees, and I agree, that the Western bankers are one trick ponies.  If they succeed in putting fascism into power in  Ukraine, fascism will rise in every EU country and in the US.  It will be unstoppable and Russia will be destroyed.

It is the EU and US who are the kleptocrat meglomaniacs.  You have everything completely backwards.

Mon, 03/03/2014 - 06:59 | 4500661 layman_please

you are correct about nazis but at the same time you completely misjudge the whole situation by ignoring the fact that communism was funded by the same group of people(international bankers or merchant bankers as quigley called them). check palmereldritch comment on sutton just bellow. i'm tired of this nazis bad, everybody else okay bullshit spawned on ZH, though i'm not going to point fingers why it is prevailing. none of you can imagine predicament where you have to choose between hitler or stalin to survive another day. what a choice that is!

one of the reason why fascism is rising it's ugly head in europe is opposition to EU(kleptocrat megalomaniacs as you so eloquently put it) but accepting this would defy your own logic so forget about it. in ukraine right wing extremist are using the situation for their benefit. what they are interested in is nation state(one country, one nation, sounds familiar?) which goes clearly against the core values of EU.

i have to give credit to putin by standing for his country but one has to be completely naive to think it's because of patriotism or such other bullshit. he's a ruler and rulers only care of one thing. difference between putin and obama is that the first one is not a puppet and represents his own interests which coincide with the wellbeing of russia, while the second only does what he's been told by some grey eminence. this makes you gullible fools believe putin stands for his people and not for his own power, because RT, ZH or 'what have you' says so, and you dream of politician with the spine like him(shouting RP 2016 etc), instead of taking personal responsibility for your liberty. seriously, is it too difficult to comprehend that human nature doesn't change when it comes to power, politics and money?

and clearly, why on earth would russia invade eastern europe again, it has never happened before, right? how can one even entertain such a crazy notion?! it's time to grow up and exercise some critical thinking. putin confronting west is not a thing to cheer for. this can only end in another cold war or with the third world war. both serve only the interests of the ruling elite, of both west and east. we have nothing to gain, but everything to lose from this. the real dichotomy is not putin or obama, but we the little people and the (political) elites, everything else is propaganda.

"So we got the Ukraine thing. A lock to drop the market by 5%. We'll be getting another QE injection next month, so we have to get the positions in to maximize the next rebound."

This entire episode feels like it is playing out like a sick game to scalp money. Since the market has been hovering around these levels, events need to happen to creat money making opportunities. Remember being on the right side of ten 10% trades is 100%, or in the case of HFT being on the right side of 1% trades can add up quickly.

It may be an age thing or above some clowns' pay grades- but an memo, email, text, tweet, or press release is not a call. Picking up the telephone and placing a call leads to direct engagement and two-way verbal communication. A telephone call is the antithesis of social media which produces anti-social behavior and leads to a degradation of basic social skills with chronic abuse.

If these dysfunctional clowns (socially and otherwise) charged with leadership actually talked and engaged with each other, the world be a safer place.

Illegitimacy of Russia's intervention in Ukraine?  What about the Russians catching the US with its pants down in doing the same?  The Russians have been given free rein to do as they please to Ukraine because of US's stupidity... One can feel for the Ukrainian people being played around by these big powers...

How many phone calls must a real man make to prove he's a man? Did Mutti promise to hold his hand and speak to him in soothing Austrian? Did Hollande promise to help him surrender? Did Cameron discuss pedophilia in Britain?
