Ukraine Orders Full Military Mobilization, Acting PM Says Russian Actions "Declaration Of War"

Tyler Durden's picture

With less than 6 hours left until FX trading opens, no resolution to the Ukraine crisis is in sight. Instead the situation has devolved even more and overnight Ukraine has ordered a full military mobilization in response to Russia's build-up of its forces in Crimea. Prime Minster Arseniy Yatsenyuk said the country was "on the brink of disaster." Several other measures were announced on Sunday by national security officials:

  • The armed forces would be put on "full combat readiness".
  • Reserves to be mobilised and trained
  • Ukraine's foreign minister will seek the help of US and UK leaders in guaranteeing its security
  • Emergency headquarters to be set up
  • Increased security at key sites, including nuclear plants.
  • Airspace closed to all non-civilian aircraft.

WSJ has more:

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Sunday that his country was "on the brink of disaster" and personally blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for bringing the two nations to the verge of war. Speaking to reporters at the Ukrainian parliament, Mr. Yatsenyuk called on the international community to rein in Mr. Putin and pressure him to remove troops from the Crimean peninsula, where a majority of residents are ethnic Russians but have Ukrainian passports.

"If President Putin wants to be the president who starts the war between two friendly and neighboring countries, he has [almost] reached this target," Mr. Yatsenyuk said. "We are on the brink of disaster. There was no reason for the Russian Federation to invade Ukraine."

...

Western diplomats doubt that the Ukrainian armed forces would be able to match up to the Russian forces already in control of the critical infrastructure and border points in the Crimea.

Ukrainian leaders say that Russia has already sent an additional 6,000 troops to Crimea since tensions arose in the peninsula last week. The two countries have a military agreement that allows Moscow to base forces in the region, but Ukrainian officials accuse Moscow of violating that treaty by not informing Kiev of additional troops, and by moving forces without prior notice. Moscow says that it is in compliance of the accord.

Earlier Sunday, Ukraine's interior minister said Russian officials had approached Ukrainian officers remaining in Crimea and offered them immediate Russian citizenship.

"Across the entire territory of Crimea, Russian emissaries and military officers have invited the remaining Ukrainian interior ministry troops to take Russian citizenship and immediately receive Russian passports," Arsen Avakov wrote on his Facebook page. "This appeal has been aimed at upper and middle officer corps troops."

Mr. Avakov denied that Ukrainian forces had threatened the Russian-speaking population on the largely pro-Russian peninsula, and blamed Russian forces for the sharp militarization of the region.

"In Crimea, there are no forces from the interior ministry or the regular army threatening citizens of the Russian Federation or the Russian-speaking population," he said. "And also no self-defense units from Maidan have arrived from Kiev. All destabilization in the Crimea has come from and been masterminded in Russia."

The BBC adds that it has seen what appear to be Russian troops digging trenches on the Crimean border.  Furthermore, a standoff between Ukrainian troops who have fortified a base in the crimean city of Privolnoye, borth place of the late USSR president Mikhail Gorbachev, and Russians who have surrounded them, may be the match that set it all off. Fox reports that hundreds of unidentified gunmen surrounded a Ukraine's infantry base in Privolnoye in its Crimea region Sunday. The convoy included at least 13 troop vehicles each containing 30 soldiers and four armored vehicles with mounted machine guns. The vehicles -- which have Russian license plates -- have surrounded the base and are blocking Ukrainian soldiers from entering or leaving it.

This is the current state of the standoff:

In response, acting Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said the move by Russian forces to surround military bases in Crimea was "a declaration of war."

His comments were echoed by acting president Oleksandr Turchynov, who said Ukraine had closed its airspace to non-civilian aircraft. Among the other statements by Yatsenyuk, as reported by the WSJ:

  • Ukrainian PM: ‘If President Putin Wants to Be the President Who Starts the War Between Two Friendly and Neighboring Countries, He Has [Almost] Reached This Target’
  • Ukrainian PM: ‘We are on the brink of disaster’
  • Ukrainian PM: ‘There Was No Reason for the Russian Federation to Invade Ukraine
  • Ukrainian PM: We Believe Western Partners and Entire Western Community Will Support Entire Territorial Integrity of Ukraine
  • Ukrainian PM: We Believe They Will Do Everything They Can to Stop Russian Military Aggression in Ukraine
  • Ukrainian Defense Ministry: All Ukraine’s Border Patrol Ships Moved Out of Crimean Ports to Odessa
  • Ukraine PM: Every Half Hour There Are Provocations in Crimea and Ukraine Refuses to Respond to These Provocations
  • Ukraine PM: Ukraine Hasn’t Given Permission to Russia to Deploy an Additional 6,000 troops to Crimea

All told, some 6,000 extra Russian troops and 30 additional armoured vehicles are now in Crimea, Ukrainian Defence Minister Ihor Tenyukh said on Saturday.

An interactive map of the key Ukraine battlefields is shown below:

Finallly, there was the traditional escalation in Western diplomacy with both France and Britain announcing they are putting on hold their plans for participation in the G-8 conference to be held in Sochi.

It gets better. From the WSJ:

France is not considering any military action in response to Russia’s decision to deploy troops inside Ukraine, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Sunday, as Western countries instead sought to renew diplomatic pressure on Moscow.

In an interview with French TV, Mr. Fabius said Poland had requested a meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, military alliance “because it feels threatened by what’s going on in Ukraine.”

Asked if France would intervene militarily in Ukraine, Mr. Fabius responded: “Today, this is not the hypothesis. I’m telling you we want a de-escalation.”

..

“France’s position is to call for the suspension of preparation ahead of the G-8 meeting in Sochi as long as the Russian partners have not returned to principles in agreement with the G-8 and G-7,” Mr. Fabius said.

Apparently unlike Mali and the Central African Republic, Russian can fight back.

And then there's this:

  • Kerry Says U.S. Considering Sanctions on Russia for Ukraine Move

Well if nothing else stopped Putin, this surely will.

Who is behind it?  Let me help ya.  Same folks behind Syria.

Russia was able to respond effectively to the western challenge in Syria.  So what do you do?   Spread them thin.

Think it is a coincidence that two critical (yet ethinically unrelated) Russian proxy states have uprisings within a a few years of one another?

This is STILL about Syria IMO.  Gotta get that Kuwaiti Nat Gas into southern europe.

Spread the Russians too thin and hope they can't handle multiple military crisis.

Keep an eye on Syria and let's see if it heats up in the next few days/weeks.

You are ignoring the fact that the West has been baiting anyone / everyone to initiate agressions to legitimize a military intervention by the western cartels. They tried in Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran, and now Ukraine. Eventually, it was bound to work. I don't think hostilities will be minimalized.

The impression I get is that the new puppet government working to "liberate" Ukraine which may or may not be financed by Silicon Valley's Ebay magnate Pierre Omidayar, is just a bunch of talking heads with lots of sound and fury backed by the media talking heads.  The Ukrainian military is not amassing their troops, the head of their navy just defected to Russia.  It is like the common Ukrainian is thinking, who the fuck is this guy claiming to be our President and does he really believe that because western media says he is the new man in charge we will just all fall into line and support him and give our lives for his conquest to liberate us from the old bad guy to the new bad guy?

Oh she's hot no doubt.  Ray Charles could see that.  But I thought we were talking about singing?  Perhaps that cleavage is to take your mind off the singing a bit because a great singer she's far from.  Just thought I'd chime in since we're thumbing our nose at other people's "taste" here.

Her voice is equally sultry as is she.  Rich, full.  Like that rack.  But someone needed to teach her how to breath properly, and not cut off the air between words.  Sometimes her breath only lasts for one word (witness the second "now" and "drove me").  Also her articulation of "overyou" seems more appropriatly spelled as such.  Again, she has a very, very nice voice, and I'd certianly do her before even thinking of doing Ella with a $10,000 fee.

BUT,  to hear Cry Me A River, some of us just may want to hear the absolute best, bar none... I'm searching to see if Billie did it, or Sassy... but until then, sorry mate, this is the un-crowned (Queen)...

"Best" and "favorite" are two different things, but I agree with you. I think Julie London was a very good singer, but well out of the league of the greats. Let's face it; she's mostly forgotten now, but this was her song. Billie's voice was gone by the time the song was written (for Ella).

I tend to be very un-American in my tastes, often preferring things that are not the best. Wabi-sabi, and whatnot.

It's also worth noting that Syria is about Iran and Iran and Russia are very different players in this game.  Iran is a state that is very controlled by it's own people (who have a very strong aversion to foreign actors involving themselves into their affairs).

Yes, they want to remove Syria and Hezbollah prior to attacking Iran.  Numerous attacks on Lebanon were thwarted so they've decided to give Syria the Iraq treatment first.  An imported 'civil war' masking a partition into something easier to manage.  Then presumably they'll try Lebanon again.

More on the demise of the Petro-dollar here:

http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article42942.html

(Hard to tell if the subversive western action ('democratic spring') in the Ukraine was defensive or may end up being a false flag on the dollar itself)

If Obama does nothing he may as well just exclaim, "Mr. Putin, tear down this Petro-dollar wall..."

[Excerpts from the link November 2013]:

PETRO-DOLLAR FINAL DEATH THROES

The overthrow of Mosni in Egypt required a huge financial assist by the Saudis, hardly a team effort with the Obama Admin clown show. The retreat from Syria has angered the Saudi Royal family in unspeakable terms. They have responded by threatening the shutdown of US Embassies in Saudi Arabia. Hidden in the many conflicts are the Pipeline Politics, which the USGovt cannot afford to reveal. Doing so would make crystal clear its ulterior motives, its weakened position, and the rise of the Natural Gas Coop led by the Russian Gazprom giant. Revealing the fading power of OPEC as the Saudi weapon to enforce the King Dollar scepter would accelerate the Dollar Alternative movement led by the Eastern Alliance. The Syrian War was all about blocking the completion of the Shiite Gas Pipeline from Iran. The US could not stop the Iran-Pakistani Gas Pipeline. The weakness of the USDollar will be made evident by the strangle of natural gas pipelines, mostly run by Gazprom. The US lost the Pipeline Wars to Russia long ago.

The Saudis urgently seek a new protector for the Persian Gulf. It will be China to wear the cape. The Saudis will soon announce acceptance for oil payments in Euro terms, in Yen terms, in British Pound terms, and most important in Chinese Yuan terms. The effect will be felt like a gigantic crash impact of a 7-story building hitting the ground, marking the Death of the Petro-Dollar. It has served as the foundation for the USDollar for 40 years, since the Arab 1973 Embargo. The resolution involved a grand pact, engineered by Kissinger. It called for recycling Arab Oil Surplus into USTreasury Bonds, used to fill the many national banking systems across the world. The unraveling of the Petro-Dollar standard will bring about colossal reformation of the many national banking systems. They will ditch the USTBonds in favor of a mix of Chinese Yuan and Gold bullion. Later the same Yuan will become partially gold-backed. Game over for the King Dollar!

SYSTEMIC BREAKDOWN IMMINENT

All the signals point to the same conclusion. The system is breaking down. The towers are falling. The paper mache structures have withered. The derivative machinery has been jammed. The confidence in the paper based system has vaporized. Nobody can foretell when the new system will arrive, but its description can be offered in rough terms. It will be from a Global Currency Reset, with a vast redemption of USTreasurys, a lost USDollar global currency reserve, and discredited sovereign bond backbone for all major currencies. It will feature a Gold Trade Standard, with trade settled on a net basis with gold bullion, supported by gold intermediary bankers. It will rely upon Gold Trade Notes that serve as Letters of Credit. It will see a massive Gold Trade Central Bank, whose embryonic form is noted in the BRICS Bank. Expect the bank to function as a processing plant at a later date, to convert USTBonds into Gold bullion. The same bank will process UKGilts, EuroBonds, and JapGovtBonds into Gold Bullion. The de-centralized system will be trade based, not bank based. Trade rules will dictate banking rules, to displace the Anglo banker hegemony. The New York and London offices, even the Swiss offices, will attempt to continue their sabotage. But they can only win delays. See the tactics exerted upon the G-20 Meetings. The BRICS initiatives and formal progress are led by Russia & China. They cannot be stopped, mainly because they attempt survival by establishing the next chapter's architecture.

Obama isn't a military man, and flatly, he's unfit for command. He's the USSA's Affirmative Action president, flanked by some Ivy League Lesbians on the NSC, and John "I married a billionaire" Kerry heading up another minority empowerment plantation at the State Department. The Obama Regime only knows bribery, shit-testing, and soft-lit, telegenic woofing. None of which matters when the Russian High Command is quite willing to spill blood over their strategic interests. Trustafarian NGOs vs The Spetsnaz. Good luck with that, Liberals.

Remember when Kennedy mobilized to keep Soviet nukes out of Cuba? NATO nukes in Ukraine are the same thing to Putin. Hegemony over the former USSR could very well be considered Russia's Monroe Doctrine. Understand this strategic view, and you understand why Russia has already mobilized.

Hopefully, there's some real commanders within the Joint Chiefs who will tell Barry and the Banksta Bathtoys to stand down. There is no Real American interest in this fight.

It's about many things. Here's my take from thinking about this whole shoveling snow (my least favorite Russian import). I don't think Russia cares terribly much about a Maine-sized peninsula nor did they about a small strip of land northwest of Georgia in 2008. This is about Putin realizing the dreams of tsars for the last 600 years...and taking Constantinople. That can't be done without a large presence in the Black Sea and Syria.

Thanks for the link.  Listening now.

William Engdahl is also all over this.  Very interesting.

I also find it interesting that apparently neither the USA (and by extension NATO) or Russia want Ukraine to be 'self governed'.  Too many foreign actors involved here.

I think once the US preplanned coup was outed they immediately went to plan B, the Russian take over.

This will all become clear eventually.  History is proving that the enemy is any people that would like to control their own Government.

President of the Crimean Parliament Vladimir Konstantinov said that the new authorities in Kiev have to "do their own job" first to settle their own house, and that the local authorities of Crimea can take care of themselves.

"You in Kiev settle your own disputes and we will deal with our Republic's issues," Konstantinov said at a press conference. Most of the security forces and the military share this attitude, he warned, and they are mainly people who are scared for their lives and the lives of their families by the attrocities in Kiev and the anti-russian moves of the new government.

There are three types ofpeople in the world:

Group A: Criminals

Group B: Victims

Group C: Those of us not interested in being either.

Group A despises group C and controls group B. Some of group B enjoy their shackels. Group C is heavily armed and wants to be left alone. Group A refuses to leave anyone alone. It is a problem for everyone.

The WWI started exactly one hundred years ago in 1914. The stupid Russian czar Nicholas2 has declared a total mobilization of Russian's army without any intention to start a war. He was wrong. Germany declared a war on Russia and the rest is the history: The Russian Empire collapsed, the entire Czar family was exterminated, Jewish Bolsheviks thugs came to power and started a genocide of Russian people.

It is important to note that both Russian Czar and the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, German were idiots but British leaders were smart and knew what they were doing, i.e., they were destroying their two major competitors

The world never was the same following the  WWI. Now, 100 years later, we have zionist stupid puppets as leaders of Russia and the USA, i.e., Obama and Putin. And we are moving to the WWIII. Neither Putin nor Obama understand what they are doing. The coming major confrontation between America and Russia will ruin the both countries making China the new indisputable world leader.

China is playing their card quite smart:

BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) --

A Chinese spokesman on Sunday urged all sides involved in the Ukraine situation to comply with international law and seek a political solution to their disputes through dialogue and negotiations.

"China is deeply concerned with the current Ukraine situation," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said when responding to a question on China's stance after Russia's upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, authorized President Vladimir Putin to use military forces to protect Russian citizens and soldiers in Ukrainian territory.

Condemning violences over the past days in Ukraine, Qin said China has been urging all parties in Ukraine to address their domestic disputes peacefully in accordance with the country's law, safeguard the legitimate rights of the Ukrainian people of all ethnics, and restore social order as soon as possible.

Qin said

China always sticks to the principle of non-interference in any country's internal affairs and respects the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

"There have been reasons for today's situation in Ukraine," said the spokesman, without detailing the reasons.

China will closely watch the development of the situation in Ukraine and calls on all sides concerned to respect international law and pursue a political solution to their disputes through dialogue and negotiations to safeguard peace and stability in the region, Qin said.

Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov has dismissed Dmytro Kolesnikov from the post of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Administration's head and appointed Ukrainian businessman Ihor Kolomoisky, who is a co-owner of the Privat Group and Head of European Jewish Council, to the office.

I think the Saudis have a good case for their nat gad pipeline. This is long-view stuff, but I'm surprised the Saudis aren't using the "Russian pipes through the Ukraine aren't reliable" meme yet.

Russians can take out a middleman, own instead of lease their military bases, and gain control of some good agricultural land.

Still don't see what the US gets out of this. Poking the bear with a sharp stick? I suppose I'm missing something. Just trying to stay on top of the 'super power' hill?

If we simply judge based upon results, Obama seeks chaos. I think there is a belief that  they can gain power by destabilizing as much of the world as possible. Every country that has seen revolution in the last ten years, which one has an identifiable leader. There are no leaders left other than the few that are under attack. There are leaders still in the EU but they have largely surrendered their power to the central government, which few have any idea of who those actual leaders are.

"Yatsenyuk was himself — during the presidential elections of 2010 — the target of a whispering campaign that he was Jewish, and therefore not a true Ukrainian. As a friend of mine who lives in Kiev observed: “It’s totally false, he isn’t Jewish. He’s just a well-educated person.”

So your fucking arrogance let's you equate being educated with being easily mistaken for a jew.  The lack of cloven hooves and reptilian haploids would have been my first guess against making that mistake.

The answer lies in the ZH text above: "Ukraine's foreign minister will seek the help of US and UK leaders in guaranteeing its security."

The key words are UK, US.  The Anglo-American Alliance desperately needs a regional war, to keep up the sagging demand for its fiat Treasuries.  IOW, anything to deflect attention to the sagging sales if USTs.  And w/o UST sales, King Dollar loses its title as King Currency.

MORE than anything else, it's about (a) King Dollar staying on top, and (b) Shutting Russian gas supplies to the EU.

Cold War is back.  Plan accordingly.

Population control.

Territory and resource acquisition.

Making an example of someone to others.

Killing enemies.

We are humans not gods.  All of these things apply and always will.  So, instead of bleating about how horrible war is you might be better served to embrace it.  We should endeavor to make war absolute hell intead of the relatively clean excercise it has become.  Many fewer people will be happy to fight wars if all wars fought are total war.  To make this really work all humans should be trained and armed in order to defend themselves, families, neighbors, towns, states, nations...  Once people like Putin and his ilk (Obama) lose their monopoly on violence they will be less willing to start wars.

Or we could disarm everyone but governments.  You will fight and die when dear leader says or you will just die.  Yay tyranny!

Edit:  This is commentary on war, not specifically Ukraine.  I hope that if Russia pushes beyone Crimea that Ukraine fights and wins.  Realistically, they cannot beat the Russians in Crimea.  Realistically they will be very hard pressed to defeat the Russians in Ukraine proper.  Of course, Finland held out for a couple of seasons so there is always hope.

War was good for putting chattel slavery out of business in the US.

War was good for breaking the bonds between colonies and the British Empire.

War was good for breaking up the Soviet Union (Afghanistan was crucial).

War was good for ending Japanese privations in China.

War is good for (on a personal level) stopping home invasions that can lead to rape and murder.

Those are just a few.  Time to grow up and live in the real world.  War is part of the human condition and will always be there.  Instead of hopelessly bellyaching about the existence of war people need to start worrying about controlling what is done in their names, as in, when, where, and why.  Realism, it's what's for dinner.

How can the U.S. continue to be looked upon as a "safe house" for people to park their money in (bonds/equities) when we continue to deteriorate as a world power; when our POTOS shrinks from his role as "leader of the free world". Sooner rather than later these questions have to be asked, by even the blindest of mutes and the answers could have far reaching financial repercussions when the sleeper awakens.

3. The current regime is unlawful and unconstitutional.  Hold Parliamentary elections and Presidential elections in 6 months.

Swissaustrian you sound more like FrenchParisian to me.   Why not go out and throw rocks at the troops and tell them to lay down their arms.
