US Official Claims 6,000 Russian Troops In Complete Control Of Crimea - Crisis Map Update
While the images and local news have been suggesting that Russia is in control on the Crimean peninsula, US officials (according to Bloomberg) have confirmed this:

the ukraine was part of the russian empire and the ussr for about as long as the u.s. has existed. both krushchev and breshnev came from ukraine. over three quarters of the population of crimea and far eastern ukraine speak russian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine#Language).
perhaps it's not such a good idea to attempt to encircle russia with an opposing military alliance (nato). russia is touchy about invasions. about the time they got over napoleon, hitler tried it and russia lost about one of every eight people. decimate means one in ten.

Can't see Putin being willing to give up a major airbase and a deep, warm water port unless he really has no alternative, though. So, whether he has any designs on territory further west, or not, I reckon he's in the Crimea to stay, no matter what the West thinks about the matter.

The US should intercede diplomatically, and not punatively as we are now. The solution should be an easy sell. Propose a national referendum in Ukraine, contingent on Russian withdrawl and obvious security assurances by the gov't in Kiev, on whether to allow the Crimea to seccede or not. If it passes then the Crimeans can have a referendum on if they want to seccede. How that would play out is obvious and practically set in stone. Russia gets the Crimea. The Crimea gets to be part of Russia. Ukraine gets to live relatively intact and, in fact, much more whole with the subtraction of the Crimea than with, and skim pipeline income. US gets what it (points of view may vary) wants with Ukraine swinging to Europe and another Nobel.
The USA, England, and Russia are the signatory to the Budapest Treat signed in 1993 guaranteeing Ukrainian sovereignty and integrity. The failure of the Obama USA and England exercise its treaty obligations will be a geopolitical catastrophe for the USA, an end of NATO, and collapse of US$ as the reserve currency.
It is that simple. The USA has lost in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and now the USA are selling down Ukraine. Our gay-loving community-organizer Commendante Obama has fucked up America big time!

I think the fact that Germany currently imports ~30% of their natgas from Russia has a lot to do with the faces of both leaders.
By taking back the Crimea coupled with Georgia, Putin has created a choke point to access from the Black Sea. I don't think the Ukraine is his target. Turkey on the other hand would give him control over the EU's energy supplies.
