Europe Can't Even Agree On Russian Trade Sanctions

Tyler Durden's picture

The (ironically named) United Kingdom is the first to openly raise concerns over trade sanctions against Russia. As The Telegraph reports,

"Britain is preparing to rule out trade sanctions against Russia amid fears that the Ukraine crisis could derail the global economic recovery"

Perhaps it is the fear of a massive liquidity suck out from London's real estate market (or its banking system) that has the Brits on edge. We suspect Germany will be close behind as they eye exploding gas and oil prices and their dependence on Russia's marginal production.

It would appear, just as in the case of Syria, that Obama may find himself alone among his allies...

People who historically have lived under tyranny know not to rely on them for anything. Freedom has made America soft, fully expectant that everything will work out, just because it always has. And our government reinforces this notion for the sake of its own power. Russians know better.

The US should build a statue of Lenin and put it right next to the statue of Liberty, because it was that fucking sociopathic asshole that burried Russia for 70 years.  Without him America would have not had free reign over the world for so long.

I'm reading that food prices in the UK are skyrocketing.  True?  If true, the last thing the UK needs is sanctions on Russia and more expensive oil/gas.

The U.K. went from producing over 50% of its own food, to now importing a bigger percentage than that.

And our biggest land owners now sit on land, and collect fees from the govt/E.U. for NOT farming, to save paying labourers.

Our food prices are also manipulated by banks, who negotiate crops price in advance, pre-harvest, and sell on to the biggest chains/markets at fixed prices.

So basically, yes, our food prices are increasing and always will. But not due to currency movements, nor tensions, simply because we allowed a select few people to control the majority of the land.

Rather than just being debt slaves, the UK population have been Land, and in turn food price slaves for at least 2 decades.

Overall food price inflation in the UK is running at about 8%-9% at the moment in my experience. But individual products can vary quite a bit. The bread I buy (400gram) cost GBP 0.60 per loaf 18 months ago, today it's 0.79.

I can vouch for this, my 800g loaf costs 1.45 now compared to 1.15 just over a year ago.

And unlike in other countries, in the UK it actually costs more to buy fresh ingredients to make your own so the increase is unavoidable, which is also a contributing factor in why so many poor have gone from buying basic/cheaper products to relying on food banks.

How about Aldi?   A good loaf of wheat bread about 24 ounces in most American stores is about $2.49 but in Aldi it is $0.99 cents.

The Germans also seem to use less GMO, high fructose corn syrup and other shit than American stores.

If you look at the ingredients of many Aldi products you will see more chemicals than fucking food product. I know , I was broke for a few years and drinking their shite beer in Spain for a few years , it definitely gave me brain damage.

Buy YOUR OWN Bread maker , it halves your cost. And Quality will improve (You also know what's in it)

Adopt a SPARTAN LIFESTYLE.

Cut the fuckers down as much as possible. You would be surprised at the savings. Fuck 'em.

Imagine that, ignoring human rights violations in favor of money. That's never happened before.

Anything goes as long as someone is profitting.

Go ahead and shoot yourself EU.

Russia would be smart to start squeezing the gas supply.

Once prices start doubling or tripling that should teach the west.

China needs to start increasing rare-earth prices.

I would not encourage the Russians and Putin to do that EXCEPT - this Ukraine BS phony revolution was started by the USA and the EU but mainly the USA.   The Europeans should remember Nuland saying "F the EU!"

I thought there was a story where the German defense minister (woman) had a metting with the Russians and without the USA which was a "F the USA!" back.

the irony of it all?

if not for the early winter freeze that stopped germany from conquering russia on its doorstep the entire complexion of wwii would have been turned upside-down, with germany perhaps winning.

the allies were fighting for their very existence as it was in wwi until wilson entered the fray turning the tide. the french had already agreed to surrender but england would have none of this and subsequently bring the us to turn the tide. this to was true regarding wwii when the us was brought into the war wwii, because of japan. had we let japan alone... not shutting off its energy needs, rubber, steel, etc.,etc., they would have gone on their merry way and conquered china once and for all. but as in wwi, england dragged us into our second world war dragging our feet screaming isolationism!

jmo

indeed, when germany decided to fight a two-front war having run over eastern europe in one fell-swoop, it was to be their Waterloo! the weather was too 'Adolf`the Narcissus'... lunch, for the 'Seirenes of Persephone'! twas this bellicose`naivete Hubris`Nazi to be destroyed by the ghost of Alexanders' Czar nemesis Achilles???

thank god it all worked out the way it did or we'd all be roasting in an oven somewhere!!!

Get Back America... get back to where you once belonged, to what you always stood for-- the "Constitution of the United States of America"  "God Bless America, that we find our way back?!?

again JMO

thankyou Tyler

I do think putin is in a bit of a box. He can't back off or he runs the risk of looking weak at home and is vulnerable to riots in the streets. I don't think he's a back off sort of dude anyways.

The staggering hypocrisy of the west, particularly US is what pisses me off. Nobody and I mean nobody is talking about Nuland's phone call about installing a puppet regime in Ukraine. This hypocrisy supporting an overthrow of a legitimate, if unpopular(Barry check your ratings lately?)president is such utter, complete bullshit. I want obama and the neocons to get their ass handed to him so badly that I find myself cheering for Putin

Hey Europe want to hurt Putin without going to war.  Here is an idea buy your gas elsewhere.  Buy from the middle east or better yet from your friends in North America.  Get rid of your stupid carbon taxes and use the price that cash to cover any price difference that may happen.  Two good things happen.  You poke Russia in the eye and remove the leverage that they have on you freezing in the dark next winter.  And you get a dependable supply not affected by politics.  But of course your political leadership don't so much dislike Putin as they are jealous of him.
