Obama's Latest Tactic: "Isolate Russia"

Tyler Durden's picture

After once again clearly delineating that Russian "costs" are set to surge, and hopefully he means more than just the drop in the Micex and its artificial, paper wealth effect which Putin couldn't care less about as long as crude is soaring...

  • OBAMA SAYS INCIDENT WITH UKRAINE WILL BE ‘COSTLY’ FOR RUSSIA

... the US president has laid out his latest tactic:

  • OBAMA SAYS HE'S CONSIDERING ECONOMIC STEPS TO ISOLATE RUSSIA

Does he also mean to isolate Russian gas from entering Germany, which just happens to be reliant on Russian imports for a third of its natgas needs? He goes on.

  • OBAMA SAYS RUSSIA ON `WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY' IN UKRAINE

Which of course is written by the winners. And the punchline:

  • OBAMA URGES CONGRESS TO PROVIDE PACKAGE OF ASSISTANCE QUICKLY TO UKRAINIAN PEOPLE; SAYS SHOULD NOT BE PARTISAN ISSUE ON CAPITOL HILL

Maybe time to send Obamacare to Kiev: so many young, strapping participants just waiting to sign up? Or maybe it just time to raise minimum wages in the Ukraine while giving the local population the safety of mind that comes with investing in the "no risk, guaranteed return" MyRA.

Don't turn Russia back into an enemy!!  Here's what you do:

The EU an US should urge Ukraine to just let Crimea go.  Heck it was part of Russia before 1954.  In exchange, both sides offer to help financially strapped Ukraine.  Everyone wins, even Ukraine which at the cost of losing the ethnically-Russia province of Crimea gets to be more western and less Russian and gets the bucks it needs.  A negotiated settlement like that gives China nothing to consider regarding Japan and Taiwan either.

how cute. world peace.

you have it right but wrong. the eu and us will let crimea go (because they have no other choice)

both sides will help financially strapped ukraine (both will be feeding lots of money packed suitcases to western ukranaian politicians to gain influence)

and china doesnt give a shit what anybody does as long as it doesnt directly affect them.

People seldom appreciate outsides kicking out the oligarchs.   Usually,  the oligarchs are worshipped; like our Red and Blue Team oligarchs.   Imagine if Canada invaded and kicked the Red and Blue Team out because we didn't have enough Freedum-n-Democracy?    Sure, they are right,  but everybody loves their oligarchs more than the invaders.

As Pro-European Protests Seize Ukraine, Jewish Oligarch Victor Pinchuk Is a Bridge to the West : )

One breezy evening last September, Viktor Pinchuk, Ukraine’s second-richest man, stepped onstage at the Livadia Palace in the Black Sea resort of Yalta to introduce the star speaker of the annual international conferance he hosts to promote his country’s ties with the West: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Nearby, at a table set for an exquisite five-course meal, sat her husband; they were joined in the hall by Shimon Peres and Tony Blair, as well as a number of former European heads of state, top diplomats, and business tycoons. “Mr. President, you are really a super star,” Pinchuk told Bill Clinton in a seemingly apologetic tone, “but Secretary Clinton, she is a real, real mega star.”

I gave you an up for for sentimental reminiscing of the good ole days.  We (the US), are still going forward due to financial inertia.  There are lots of outside sources slowing this down, as well as the friction coefficient of our own parasitic banking and political class.  Sometime, well within my lifetime, we'll slowly grind to a halt.  Then, shit will fall apart.

Why should we be immune from this?  It's happened to every single empire that has ever existed.  We are overextended.  We have a corrupted culture.  We have a corrupted political class.  Our currency is devalued and debased.  We don't have any semblance of a homogeneous culture, and no common background (or narrative).  The American Dream is dead.

We (the US) really have no dog in this fight.  This is the EU's fight.  Well, it's their fight if they want gas.

Maybe a plague will come and redifine things for us?  We are long overdue.  Anyways, we are close to a robotic revolution for labor, so maybe the timing will work to that end?

Why aren't Americans raiding their accounts and converting as is happening in Russia? Why is money still being put into USDs as a last resort instead of Yuan? Same for the Euro which is where alot of that Eastern European wealth is ending up.

Maybe foolish of me to think that way, but the US can afford to trim alot of fat in its current state and keep the lights on for alot longer than China or Russia can.

Ukrainians can chose between being drowned in Dollars for eternity or being Russianized.

Imagine you're a foreigner. What choice would you make for the future of your family?

Obama can even sweeten the pot and send all that channel stuffed GM inventory to Ukraine so they can finally drive some decent trucks over there. Farmers for the most part, they will appreciate a good pickup truck. Remember the Lada and Moskovich collection in Yanu's garage? What a joke.

1. Lock Russian banks out of SWIFT.

2. Pick your 10 favorite Russian oligarchs. Revoke their EU visas, and confiscate their bank accounts.

3. Oil embargo.

Russians would cave in a matter of days.

  1. Bambam can unilaterally force Russian banks out of an international payment system.

  3. Create an oil embargo (which worked so well in Iraq and Iran).

Why don't you come back when the drugs wear off?

By "grow a pair", I thought a reasonably intelligent individual could infer that a US President would be able to pursuade allies to take action.  My appologies for assuming you - the reader - were not sufficiently intelligent to make the leap of inference.

There was never an actual oil embargo of Iraq or Iran.  They both had huge loopholes that made them ineffective, though Iran's was sufficient to create some measure of economic hardship.

Obama's Latest Tactic: "Isolate Russia"

It may have partial success but in a longer run Russia, with all her resources and brain power, can switch to autarkic economy should US/EU/NATO imposed any meaningful sanctions or forced isolation. The current threat of freezing Russia's and Russian citizens' assets in US/EU/NATO controlled countries may already have (un)intended consequences as the rich Russians may have already started moving their bank deposits in the West to Russia or Hong Kong, Macao or Singapore. Visa restrictions will work both ways and will make it very difficult for the US/EU/NATO controlled corporations to do business not only in Russia but in the whole CIS. Eventually, it may lead to Russia's nationalization of foreign corporations on her soil for pennies on a dollar. Also, the expensive resorts in EU will suffer, too, as well-to-do Russian tourists will opt for spanky new Sochi or (soon to be renovated) Crimea resorts instead of Côte d'Azur or Costa del Sol, thus supporting their national economy rather than EU's. All this BS is completely unnecessary. Let Ukraine split and have her western part join EU, Poland or both, let the remaining part of the country become a republic within Russian Federation.

ZH, the criticism is those f*cking wimpy EU members and Germany, who are desperate not to cascade an economic meltdown from Russian sanctions.  Note the Russian central bank increasing rates before markets opened last session.  Germany taking "invasion" out kept the HFTs running supports and hand-balling it back to Obama

Germany is the problem, Poland has a short memory, can you blame them.  Vlad's eyeballs are on the next target:

In a further development last night, Poland called an emergency meeting of Nato ambassadors for Tuesday on the basis of a clause in the military Alliance allowing members to "request consultations whenever their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened".

European divisions over Russia were highlighted when Germany watered down an EU statement condemning the Russian seizure of Crimea as an "invasion" and delayed a decision on kicking Russian out of the G8 or further sanctions until an emergency summit of European leaders on Thursday.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10674260/Ukrain...

Russia will not cut gas to Europe or Germany, they haven't to Ukraine, otherwise Putin loses the oligarch support.  EU/Germany are utterly pathetic
