Russia Defends Its "Absolutely Lawful" Invasion Of Crimea

Tyler Durden's picture

Having earlier blasted John Kerry for his "lack of analysis" of the Ukraine situation and noted that China "understands" the Russian perspective, the Russian foreign ministry has issued a further statement defending its actions in Crimea: "...through the fault of the Bandera-type groups and other ultra-nationalistic forces, the measures we are taking are adequate and absolutely lawful."

Via Interfax,

The measures Russia is taking to defend the population of the Crimea are adequate and lawful, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

It said a legitimate government should be formed in Ukraine.

"We want the situation in Ukraine to get back to normal as soon as possible on the basis of the February 21 agreement, and a legitimate national unity government to be formed that would take the interests of all political forces and regions into account," it said in a statement on Monday.

"In the current extraordinary situation, which has taken shape through no fault of our own, when the lives and security of residents of the Crimea and the southeastern regions have come under threat through the fault of the Bandera-type groups and other ultra-nationalistic forces, the measures we are taking are adequate and absolutely lawful," the Foreign Ministry said.

Well the current situation in Russia right now is like that of a dominant guy (lets name him Ruslan) and a timid girl (lets name her Uksana) who broke up a few years ago, but till now there are still feelings between each other that hasnt completely died out yet. He still care for her and when other no good suiters (like EU and USA) are trying to use her for some 'fun' and 'benefits', of course Ruslan will be pissed off. And after being protective of Uksana,  she will realize that Ruslan is a true man and the only one who can protect her and they both decide to take another shot of mending things up. This is a relationship that will always exist, no matter how rocky it is, because they will always need each other in some way or another.

Uh, hang on there, aren't energy prices underpinned by global supply and demand conditions, including in Europe and Asia? And woudnt the implosion of banks and economies across Europe, nevermind our own direct effects of higher energy prices, pretty much blow our financial systems to bits too?

Note that middle east oil mostly doesn't end up being burned in our hemisphere, but rather physically ends up in combustion chambers in Europe, Japan, and China. But the price we pay is nevertheless dependent on supply and demand from the middle east, and has knock on effects to the price and supply and demand of everything we import and export with those trading partners. For better or for worse we spend a lot of treasure and blood to keep the sea lanes open and some semblance of rule of kleptocracy reigning over there.

This is for you John Maynard Keynes said such nonsense that "Putin is dependent on the West "? You understand the difference depending sides when one side of the trade gets colored paper , but the other party gets the oil and gas?

West right now teetering on the brink of disaster. Now if Putin announced that Russia refuses to sell its oil and gas for any fiat currency , the entire Western world model of the dollar will be destroyed .
Putin adviser Mr. Glazyev , has long said that Russia should sell its oil and gas, in exchange for gold. You want it? LOL

NATO thrown that through the window by throwing UN Charter through the window when bombed Serbia unilaterally, without permission from the Security Council and "recognized" "independence" of Kosovo (mother of all puppet regimes - essentially heroin mafia in power). Serbia is an UN member, which borders were guaranteed by the said UN Charter.

So, NATO established the precedent and now has to eat it's own dog food.

BTW, Ukraine (EuroMaidan mob) and EU ministers signed an agreement, too and then made a Coup the next day, remember? What about that agreement?

How about the fact that future cabinet members were picked like piglets on a livestock market by foreign diplomats (not elected even in their own country) over unsecured phone conversation? That's soooo democratic and EuroPop, eh?

So, stop whining. It's just nauseatingly hypocritical.

More idiotic pro-Russian bloggers on ZH I see again this morning. The Budapest memorandum ties our hands in a credibilty knot, and it Putin thought we would forget about this to the point of us being embarrassed, think again. Anything is possible if a POTUS is embaased if he does nothing, you pro-Putin people better wake up and realize it soon. Putin says the govt in Ukraine is illegitimate, who is Putin to say anything is illegitimate in another country? What if he pulls that shit on some of the other former republics, all in the name of legitimacy. He took Crimea without negotiation, land that was tendered to Ukraine in 1954 legally. Putin had no intention of negotiating in good faith on the naval base, the original lease expiration was due to expire in 2017, then bumped to 2042 under Yanukoych and now under Russian military control.

Bullshit on those that think Putin holds all the cards, I am not saying the west is all that strong financially, but many countries opposing Putin results in Putin not having a strong hand. He will lose his G-8 status, and revert the entire country back 20 years to when they were looked at with wary disdain in the Soviet era. You do not take stuff by force. All of this could have been avoided with negotiation, but Putin does not seem to want to be talking any more to resolve disagreements. Because he did not negotiate, the Budapest memorandum may well become binding on us, just as much as NATO is. I could give a damn who winds up with the naval base, the overriding issue once more as we all know is the Russian army is back on the march to assert its will. History offers some examples on all of this leading up to World War 2, with the seizure of territory by a dictator. Putin is the problem, not the Russian people.

All Putin has succeeded in doing is wake people up with his Sochi charm offensive, if one could call it that. What a waste of $51 billion by Putin, squandered in just a little over a week. The Olympics are a distant memory now, and Putin is left holding the price tag. I am glad it wasnt us who spent $91 billion in the last 2 Olympics with Beijing in 2008 and then Sochi. They wasted tremendous resources trying to shore up their image.

I can not believe the idiot has forgotten the lessons of Afghanistan, a guerrilla type war in Ukraine will debilitate Russian forces over time and they will eventually leave in disgrace if they go in there. And he has reignited terrorism risks with his behavior, more than before.

Are you an NSA troll?
If POTUS should feel embarrassed it should be because of Victoria Nuland.
You think Putin gives a shit about G8, which should be rather called Paper Dragon's Multi-Trillion Deficit Club.
Did Putin forget Afghanistan? Probably not. But I guess NATO has much fresher memory of Afghanistan. Oh, and Iraq, too.
Putin reignited terrorism? Are you living in Narnia? No one is reported to be even injured so far. However, terrorists are rampant in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Pakistan (as a result of heartless Drone attacks on civilians). All the places that USA brought "freedom and democracy" are now lawless death fields.
Guerrilla type warfare? On territory where local population is welcoming Russian soldiers with smiles and cheers? You are delusional. Or NSA troll.

Why would Russia concede anything at this point? They hold all the cards. The West has nothing in reserve - they've used up every bit of leverage the moment they got it, in order to economically exploit their own peoples or nations abroad. The policy of forever applying maximum pressure to everyone everywhere means that there's no next level to escalate to, short of actual nuclear war.
