Russia Warns "Will Have To Respond" For US Sanctions

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears, given comments from Foreign Minister Lukashevich, that things are about to get ugly again...

"we will have to respond...if provoked by rash and irresponsible actions by Washington... and not necessarily symmetrically."

Via Reuters,

Russia said on Tuesday that it would retaliate if the United States imposed sanctions over Moscow's actions in Ukraine.

"We will have to respond," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement. "As always in such situations, provoked by rash and irresponsible actions by Washington, we stress: This is not our choice."

And Interfax adds:

  • RUSSIA WILL HAVE TO RESPOND TO POSSIBLE U.S. SANCTIONS, "AND NOT NECESSARILY SYMMETRICALLY" - RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY

Given that Russian boots remain on the ground in Ukraine and that the US (and the west - ex-UK) are still pressing for crushing sanctions against Russia; one has to wonder whether Putin's carefully worded "annexation" comment did nothing but enable exits for oligarchs... What really changed?

I still feel like the eastern leaders have too much of their wealth in western assets, and just can't seem them throwing that all away, maybe I'm naive to what wealth is. On the other, I can't think Russia would get any deeper with this without the backing of china or house of saud, imho. We'll find out.

If this whole thing goes to the next level then the area of interest from here is Odessa and Kherson.  Odessa being the only real other major port that Ukraine has.

Watch for ships flagged of both west and Russia to hang out in the area, port security being paramount.

If Russia really wanted to go after the Ukraine any push would come from the border not the Black Sea.  Though they would have to prevent others from using Odessa as a landing / reinforcement area.

So Odessa is strategic.   All evidence though points to this being only about Crimea and the protection of Russia's base there.  Though Russia does have extensive assets in Ukraine they are not positioned militarily to to do much about it.   Massing any real numbers of troops and materials takes time and planning.   Red flags would go up all over the place if Putin was really moving any further than Crimea.  NATO would be forced to mobilize if that happened.

I think this is going to plan for now.   Maybe it escalates to a slow boil over time but for now the Spooks from both sides are running the show in Ukraine (unfortunately for the Ukrainians).

Local majorities will decide to separate in every strategic area with relative Russian majority. They already control the local centers of authority, on the ground. A lot of positioning activity is now "civilian". What's good for the goose...

Putin will support them later, when threatened by Kiev thugs.

No need for drama... for now !

The black box for us plebs is the nearly $5 trillion in "unallocated reserves" by "developing" countries.  As in, we have no idea what the fuck is the makeup of those reserves, but the controllers have 100% certainty as to the makeup of those reserves.

Present situation:

Actualized tit for tat Russian intervention following US intervention, in an area of significant strategic importance.

Game theory read on current statements:

The US should probably refrain from assuming that a US "tit" won't be responded to with a significantly more severe Russian "tat".

Yo Flak, that was mostly me being sarc without a license today. Putin has probably screwed the pooch this time, but I think he'll end up with Ukraine anyway, and all the associated debt too. Probably the next move is to get great terms on a EU/USFed 300 day emergency loan, and then rehypothecate the shit out of it back to Russia, then let Ukraine fold up like a house of cards. No blood no foul.

Besides, the Russian military needed the exercise. Keep those guys sharp for when China hits Japan leaving the northern islands open for a mid-winter invasion from Vladivostok, beotches.

Ok .Gov Employee, I'm glad to see you'll be siding with the 100,000 Texans who are killing police and moltov cocktailing the Cities squares of America in the analogy I made earlier on another post!

"I think even a better analogy would be if lets say 100,000 Texans, did the same thing in the "central Squares" of Dallas or Houston or Austin, and demanded Freedom from the US and American Empire of over taxation, etc etc!!  Then they started shooting at cops and molotov cocktailng the place!

Texas is a State of 20 million plus, so 100,000 pissed off Texans could create an international movement for freedom and succession?? i hardly fucking think so, and then add that world leaders would be flocking to Mexico with money and moving military assets into the Gulf of Mexico to "assist" those "Freedom Fighters"????

But fucking Americans think that's exactly what WE should be doing somewhere else??? Its just unreal and surreal and pathetic and so fucking filled with hypocrisy, that it should be making everyone sick to their stomach, BUT ITS NOT!"

Ohhh I know, its different right!! please enlighten us all, Flak, how is it different?

Flak:

It is obvious you are a troll - only a paid flack could possibly go into the thread time after time, get down arrowed to death, and still keep on spouting the same crazy stuff you've been spouting.

In short, you aren't here to discuss and analyze, you are here to propagandize.

Your mind is closed - as only a troll can be. You allow for no possibility of being wrong - as only a troll can be. You relentlessly harp on the same failed ideas, ignoring new evidence that disproves all your premises and conclusion - as only a troll can be.

What a pitiful excuse for a human you are - as only a troll can be.

Sssh, you'll ruin the narrative.  Don't question anything.  Believe everything.  Stand for nothing.

Seriously folks, I don't know that we were really that much of a force behind the protests.  Doubtless there was aid.  Aid doesn't make a revolution, people do.  The Ukrainians are the ones who acted.  Putin has reacted, poorly, in my view.  He could have simply pushed for a vote and Crimea would have been his with little to no cost compared to what is going on now.  Who would the west be, in that light, to argue that Crimea has no right to self determination?

As it is, we should stay out of it militarily.  Let Europe grow up.  Proposing a popular solution would get us all out of this mess but clearly nobody in Washington wants that.  Nobody in Europe has the will to say it.  Putin seems to think he would lose something that route.

In the end, a hell of a lot of people have acted stupidly.  Getting sick of the people who claim this side did this and that side did that with hardly a shred of hard evidence.  I don't know.  You all don't know.

Holy shit that's a good analogy if one thinks about it. When there's less raw resources to consume a consumer society's status quo goes to shit. Russia certainly has an upper hand in that regard.

Putin outright said the U.S. is a big bully and invaded other countries.  China stood up to the U.S. and their bullying last week too.  It seems both Russia and China will not take the U.S. double standards and bullying anymore.  Both are calling out the U.S. and what they have done.

US's got gold, in fact, holds most of the other countries gold. That they still store their gold with the Fed is quite puzzling when it's quite obvious the US plans to trash its dollar and issue a new one backed with all the to be confiscated gold at the NY Fed.

You're confusing that Fort where the Treasury (supposedly) holds its reserves VS the NY Fed holdings. The holdings at the NY Fed are audited quite often as other central banks store it there.

The USD is indeed backed by nothing at the moment, I'm aware of that. That does not contradict anything I've posted yet.

I'm not so sure that the U.S. has the resources -I've got a strong feeling that we've been overstating our hand in that regard.

Now we could be consuming everyone else's resources so we don't consume ours as some suggest, but I have a feeling we've expended our easy resources which is why we're going abroad to keep up the illusion of prosperity.

Unfortunately for us we will have to make good on our bluff down the road.

I tend to agree, though it is certainly contrarian. On one hand, china is MUCH obliged to the western ptb, and depends on american consumption to quell its masses. Plus so many of their rich leaders own many western assets (as does russia), so being isolated from those assets would certainly dampen their wealth. But on the other, it has been buying a ton of gold, and i just can't imagine russia would instigate this far if it didn't have the backing of either china and/or house of saud. We're bout to find out, I'm sure.

They will masterfully play off one side against the other, alternately using:

1) US treasuries,

2) Gold,

3) Commercial agreements,

4) North Korea as their foil, etc.

Putin is too European focused, and Barry wants the US to lose every incident, so the Chinese will simply cleanup on the "periphery": Africa, South Asia, etc.
