Greek President Raises "War Reparations" With Germany
President Karolos Papoulias raised the issue of World War II reparations to his German counterpart Joachim Gauck currently on a 3-day official visit to Athens. But as expected, Gauck repeated the official legal position of Berlin.
Karolos Papoulias told Gauck that Greece has not dropped its compensation claim over the Nazi atrocities and the enforced loan by the Nazi occupiers during the World War II.
“I want to point out that Greece has never given up its claim of German reparations, ” Papoulias reportedly told Gauch at a private meeting in Presidential Manson adding “it is necessary to solve the problem with the earliest possible start of negotiations.”
On his part, Joachim Gauck reportedly spoke of German “atrocities”, of mistakes that have been made in the past.
“I can not take another position than the legal position of the Government of Germany . What I do is , when we [Gauck and Papoulias] get together in Ioannina, to find words and acknowledge the guilt of Germany towards the victims of the area. Guilt is not only material, it has also a moral dimension. In Germany there is a wrong development. Many things have been forgotten. There is a moral obligation. I will show the way. The horrors of Nazism should remain in our memory,” Gauck told Papoulias.
On Friday, the two presidents will travel to the home town of Papoulias Ioannina in Northern Greece to pay tribute to victims of the Nazis in Ligkades village, where the Nazis executed 92 people in October 1943.
The Greek President informed his German counterpart on the economic crisis and spoke of the vicious cycle of recession and unemployment, especially among the youth.
The German President expressed his solidarity with the Greek people, acknowledging that sacrifices have been made in the effort to boost the economy through structural reforms. “I want to express my recognition and my respect to those who endure the reforms,” Gauck said repeating the cliche of the famous light at the end of the equally famous dark tunnel.
Gauck will meet also with main opposition party leader Alexis Tsipras from left-wing SYRIZA. The meeting will be attended also by WWII resistance fighter Manolis Glezos, whose main aim is the issue of WWII reparations.
PS and when German President Gauck will officially acknowledge Germany’ guilt in Ligkades village, we will proudly announce, that they all lived happily ever after….

I was up in north of Norwy last year and found a cemetery for Yougoslavian and Serbian prisinoners in perfect shape, all still yearly paid by Germany still...after 60-70 years after the war....most relatives are probably dead... but Germany still have to pay for maintenace every year... this is sick... bankers pay a fee and then it´s all cleared...

War reparations are not even the strongest claim against Germany. Greece was forced to make a loan to Germany during the occupation that Germany never paid back. It is apparently worth billions now. The Greek government didn't pursue claims against Germany in the past, as have other countries that were occupied, because it has been ruled by corrupt politicians who were easily bought.

Remember the story of Greek Pres. George Papandreau reporting that French Pres Sarkozy threatened to kill him if he went ahead with a popular referendum on an EU/bank-imposed austerity deal? And how he promptly backed down? Evidently he believed Sarkozy wasn't kidding.
So what choices do the nominal leaders of Greece have?
Greece could align with Russia and repudiate the Euro if it had a Black Sea port, but it doesn't.
They can wait and hope for a much larger block of nations to rebel against the EU bankers, say Italy, Spain, Turkey and Ireland, or for perhaps the German government to repudiate its relationship with the "German banks" and align with Russia.
Or they can take the bull by the horns, defy the banksters and accept the consequences, which would undoubtedly include armed rebellion led by their local Nazi's, Golden Dawn, financed and instigated by the EU and US, forcing them to ally with the battle-hardened Greek Communist Party.
With these as their choices, and with their close-up seats on the spectacles in Libya, Syria and Ukraine, Greece's leaders evidently don't have the stomach to take on the Empire by themselves. Would you in their place?

Sandman you're confused. Germany had to come and rescue Bulgaria and Italy, whose invasion of Greece was failing because of stubborn Greek resistance! So why would Greece owe them anything?
An aside: this invasion of Greece was possibly fateful for Germany. Hitler had postponed his invasion of the Soviet Union for a year because it required 30 German divisions to subdue Yugoslavia, which was entirely unexpected. The invasion had been rescheduled for May 1941, but having to invade Greece may have caused its postponement until July. We'll never know if another two months before winter set in could have enabled Hitler to take Moscow.
Hitler postponed the invasion of Russia for six weeks, not a year. Operation Barbarossa kicked off June 22, 1941.
