Greek President Raises "War Reparations" With Germany

Tyler Durden's picture

via Keep Talking Greece blog,

President Karolos Papoulias raised the issue of World War II reparations to his German counterpart Joachim Gauck currently on a 3-day official visit to Athens. But as expected, Gauck repeated the official legal position of Berlin.

Karolos Papoulias told Gauck that Greece has not dropped its compensation claim over the Nazi atrocities and the enforced loan by the Nazi occupiers during the World War II.

“I want to point out that Greece has never given up its claim of German reparations, ” Papoulias reportedly told Gauch at a private meeting in Presidential Manson adding “it is necessary to solve the problem with the earliest possible start of negotiations.”

On his part, Joachim Gauck reportedly spoke of German “atrocities”, of mistakes that have been made in the past.

“I can not take another position than the legal position of the Government of Germany . What I do is , when we [Gauck and Papoulias] get together in Ioannina, to find words and acknowledge the guilt of Germany towards the victims of the area. Guilt is not only material, it has also a moral dimension. In Germany there is a wrong development. Many things have been forgotten. There is a moral obligation. I will show the way. The horrors of Nazism should remain in our memory,” Gauck told Papoulias.

gauck papoulias

On Friday, the two presidents will travel to the home town of  Papoulias Ioannina in Northern Greece to pay tribute to victims of the Nazis in Ligkades village, where the Nazis executed 92 people in October 1943.

The Greek President informed his German counterpart on the economic crisis and spoke of the vicious cycle of recession and unemployment, especially among the youth.

The German President expressed his solidarity with the Greek people, acknowledging that sacrifices have been made in the effort to boost the economy through structural reforms. “I want to express my recognition and my respect to those who endure the reforms,” Gauck said repeating the cliche of the famous light at the end of the equally famous dark tunnel.

Gauck will meet also with main opposition party leader Alexis Tsipras from left-wing SYRIZA. The meeting will be attended also by WWII resistance fighter Manolis Glezos, whose main aim is the issue of WWII reparations.

PS and when German President Gauck will officially acknowledge Germany’ guilt in Ligkades village, we will proudly announce, that they all lived happily ever after….

Politicians act like children.  Why do people pay any attention to them and WHY DO THEY GIVE THEM POWER???  What is it going to take for people to see that governments are corrupt, useless, and unnecessary?

The poor need to stop treating government like their "pimp daddy"

The rich need to stop gaming the system.

The middle class need to grow a fucking pair and say enough with taxation.  Remove the ability of government to tax and all the problems go away.

"Government is at best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient." -HDT

There is no need for taxes.  Print more money.  When there is no downside to deficit financing, there is no need for taxes.

When Corporations are Human, Humans are Corporations, and since Corporations pay no tax, Humans need to pay no tax.

OK, do we have a line after which we can't bring shit up? Will it be when the last person to experience WWII dies? If so, then we're still another 30 yrs out. "Reparations" is begging for cash now, tho they had obviously been able to cope in the nearly 70 yrs since the war ended. I'd hate to be a german diplomat. I suppose it's not in their plans, but it'd be a larf to have him look in the eye of the greek whiner and say "I'll give you something to cry about right now".

Greece is run by idiots. This president is just pretending to ask this of Germany to try to fool the people of Greece into thinking that he is looking out for them, even though everyone knows the whole government of Greece is looking out for the German and French banks. War reparations are not even the strongest claim against Germany. Greece was forced to make a loan to Germany during the occupation that Germany never paid back. It is apparently worth billions now. The Greek government didn't pursue claims against Germany in the past, as have other countries that were occupied, because it has been ruled by corrupt politicians who were easily bought.

Fri, 03/07/2014 - 16:08 | 4522533 WhyWait

Not idiots. Realists, or complicit cowards, your call, but not idiots.

Remember the story of Greek Pres. George Papandreau reporting that French Pres Sarkozy threatened to kill him if he went ahead with a popular referendum on an EU/bank-imposed austerity deal?  And how he promptly backed down?  Evidently he believed Sarkozy wasn't kidding.

So what choices do the nominal leaders of Greece have?

Greece could align with Russia and repudiate the Euro if it had a Black Sea port, but it doesn't.

They can wait and hope for a much larger block of nations to rebel against the EU bankers, say Italy, Spain, Turkey and Ireland, or for perhaps the German government to repudiate its relationship with the "German banks" and align with Russia.

Or they can take the bull by the horns, defy the banksters and accept the consequences, which would undoubtedly include armed rebellion led by their local Nazi's, Golden Dawn, financed and instigated by the EU and US, forcing them to ally with the battle-hardened Greek Communist Party.

With these as their choices, and with their close-up seats on the spectacles in Libya, Syria and Ukraine, Greece's leaders evidently don't have the stomach to take on the Empire by themselves. Would you in their place?

All politicians are CROOKED, Bent, warped, not straight, Liers Thives and more. The communists (PAME) when it realy mattered obstructed the people from storming their parliament in 2012, they are also complicit in the robbery of the people. The ones that do not say what they are going to vote is approximately more than 30%.

Maybe something like Beppe Grillo in Italy is going to appear. The Greeks are waiting for something, but they do not know when it is going to happen.

"The Greek banks have been bailed out with billions exceeding 90% of country's GDP since 2008."

Everyone knows where the money went. To the Greek Banks OR I Should rephrase that The Banks in Greece that happen NOT TO BE GREEK.

They have Greeks as front men but behind them are The Usual Banksters, Starting from the Bank of Greece  it is an Institution that was formed in 1928 and took over the Central Bank from the Previous National Bank of Greece in 1929 (Ring any bells?) That bank is even worse than people think, it does not give account to ANYBODY,  therefore it is off limits.

The State of Greece has a maximum share in that thing a measly 6-8% and NOT MORE.

They are screwing the local population since its inceprion of 1829.

The Greeks knew there was something amiss but could not figure it out. THEREFORE THAT IS WHY THEY DO NOT PAY TAXES.

Same goes for the Italians but that is a Differnt Gang of Banksters more or less. They have the Vatican there which are well........... the most ancient foxes  around.

Sandman you're confused.  Germany had to come and rescue Bulgaria and Italy, whose invasion of Greece was failing because of stubborn Greek resistance! So why would Greece owe them anything?

An aside: this invasion of Greece was possibly fateful for Germany.  Hitler had postponed his invasion of the Soviet Union for a year because it required 30 German divisions to subdue Yugoslavia, which was entirely unexpected. The invasion had been rescheduled for May 1941, but having to invade Greece may have caused its postponement until July.  We'll never know if another two months before winter set in could have enabled Hitler to take Moscow.

Perhaps because it is Friday but apart from some very good comments the rest show a level of ignorance.

Sure it's ok to laugh with the homo skirts of the guard but we forget that this is what all soldiers more or less wore at that time and even subsequently for centuries. Perhaps some of you on a visit to Scotland can ridicule the kilt.

Of course Germany will not pay compensation but it will pay for what it did in ways that Karma can best decide. After all the Jewish people are still extracting damages at every opportunity. I guess they have better pull.

Talk of Alexander the Great is misplaced as both he and his successors spread more civilization and culture than the rest of us put together. Even the Jews heartily embraced Hellenism and even one of their high priests had the name Jason. Or perhaps you might want to look at some of their synagogue architecture.

Greece has in recent times and for the foreseeable future will still have clown and corrupted governments who do not have the nerve to rattle Europe over the impossible debr level that cannot EVEN BE SERVICED.

The level of austerity and the manner in which it is imposed is quite close to fitting the definition of genocide which recognizes genocide through economic measures.

Greece because of its leadership will continue to be a convenient victim and pushover as far as the USA, Turkey and Germany are concerned. Many top Greek politicians have very sizeable Euro bank balances which they do not want to convert to drchmas. And the fact that the whole public service is being shrunk but not a bloated parliament of 300 is telling in itself.

By the way I also tell jokes about Greeks, but they must be either in the right place or at least funny.

No doubt I will score many down 'arrows' but as one of the 300 Spartans said, " I enjoy fighting in the shade".

The greatest German “atrocities” are 1.) allowing Greece into the Euro Zone and 2.) not kicking their poofy skirt wearing assess out.

So says the man who cannot spell Prometheus correctly.

In any case it was those sorry assed Germans who allowed Greece in when she did not qualify to be in the Euro.

Don't let the those skirts fool you. You don't know anything about them.

I'm still feeling slighted from the Peloponnesian War, Greece.
