Pentagon Warns Increase In Terrorism Due To Global Warming

Tyler Durden's picture

For the past few weeks we have seen stock markets surge as macro-economic data has collapsed around the world. The 'excuse' given for this apparent dichotomy - weather. But now it seems "weather" is to blame for other problems in the world too. As Russia Today reports, in its latest Quadrennial Defense Review, the US Department of Defense (DoD), stressed threats to global stability and American hegemony posed by climate change warning that that an erratic climate will likely cause increased “terrorist activity,” among other impacts..."The pressures caused by climate change will influence resource competition while placing additional burdens on economies, societies, and governance institutions around the world...these effects are threat multipliers."

Via Russia Today,

Like the 2006 and 2010 versions, the 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) – a report released every four years on US military strategy and the challenges to its global operations – highlights threats, some more predictable than others, that global climate change will present to human civilization.

"The impacts of climate change may increase the frequency, scale, and complexity of future missions, including defense support to civil authorities, while at the same time undermining the capacity of our domestic installations to support training activities," states the 64-page report, published Tuesday.

"Climate change poses another significant challenge for the United States and the world at large. As greenhouse gas emissions increase, sea levels are rising, average global temperatures are increasing, and severe weather patterns are accelerating."

A warming planet will likely “exacerbate water scarcity and lead to sharp increases in food costs,” the report details, leading to devastated infrastructure and living conditions, especially in poorer regions of the world.

In addition, this fierce “resource competition” will only push the likelihood of additional terror threats, the QDR states.

"The pressures caused by climate change will influence resource competition while placing additional burdens on economies, societies, and governance institutions around the world,” the report continues.

"These effects are threat multipliers that will aggravate stressors abroad such as poverty, environmental degradation, political instability, and social tensions – conditions that can enable terrorist activity and other forms of violence."

Perhaps more ironically, despite identifying climate change as a global menace and an antagonist to American power, the Defense Department does not address its own unrivaled fuel consumption.

According to the Pentagon’s Defense Energy Support Center, the military spent $3.8 billion in 2009 for 31.3 million barrels, or about 1.3 billion gallons, of oil that was consumed at posts, camps, and overseas bases, TomDispatch’s Nick Turse reported in 2010.

Estimates as to how much oil the US military uses per day varies between about 400,000 barrels per day in "peacetime" to around 800,000 barrels each day during the height of the Iraq war.

Bad economic data, blame the weather! Bad earnings, blame the weather! Bad Social Unrest, blame the weather!

We should simply cut the military budget in half.  Half a million barrels per day is ridiculous.    When I see national guard fly boys overhead in my city I think about all the useful things where those resources could be directed

All wars are fought by state actors against other state actors for tax-bases and resource to keep a tax-base. The state, which is the groundwork for the government, doesn't care who it's tax-base is, so long as the main characters in control of the state's apparatus can leech off of it well enough to remain slothful and wealthy.

If you threaten the ability of the state to continue functioning in this manner you become the enemy of the state, or a terrorist in other words.

What caused WW1 and WW2? The answer is simple; Governments/The State did. If you want to end wars, you have to remove the state from power. You have to abolish it totally around the world and move beyond the trap of having governments.

Humanity will likely need a few generations of social evolution to get to that point, but it has started to happen already. It's just up to each of us in the end to build the world we all want as individuals, where we can live in peace and prosper and move forward in a voluntary manner. The only thing stopping this from happening is ourselves and the people we associate with.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'Gitche Gumee'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead

With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty.
That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early.

Unfortunately the state doesn't just go away by calling it something else, or diffusing its methods into the economy. Humans have learned methods of organisation over 10,000 years, primarily from the state, but also religion, economics, and ideology. The economy is part of an intertwined genealogy, its morals in keeping with the 'good or evil' of the state. With all the economic destruction of the world it should be clear to anyone that it is not just states that cause war.

It's the people you don't associate with who will gang together and come take what they want from you.  There is no avoiding government.  Quit denying human nature.  We do bad things to others.  It really happens and it is baked in.  We form governments to protect against and limit what might be done to us.  Most of the time we end up putting psychopaths in charge and the whole thing breaks.  It doesn't matter which way you slice it.  We are humans.  The only thing to do is to make better what you have.  Nobody is just going to lay down, die, and stop stomping on your neck.  You have to stand up for yourself and quit bitching about how things would be if we would only evolve.  Get over it.  That dog aint gonna hunt in your life time.  You get what you give.

Incorrect, *we* dont form goverments to protect ourselves. A security firm is hired to protect us or our bussines. We can fire it without threats of violence. Goverment borders are lines drawn after battles end. States are tax farms. You can not fire your 'civil servants ' because you are their servant. Someone who claims to protect your property, should not start with a threat for your property, like the mafia it supposedly protects you from.

Using government dollars to feed hungry kids is hardly the answer. All we need is more government dependence and stealing from the productive. We need to government to leave us alone. Stop the crony capitalism, stop the burdensome regualtion that keeps people from starting businesses and protect the special interests, stop all the missallocation of resources - the bone heads sitting in offices in DC do not know better than us how to spend our money, take care of our kids, do our work, and run our lives. I'd be for cutting the defense budge by 50% if we cut the rest of the monster by 50% too. It's not the Defense Department that drives the agenda, it's all the money flowing through DC that drives the agenda. Everyone is after it, yes defense contractors, but everyone else under the sun, too, like cowboy poets, etc., etc. Stop feeding the monster, period. As yoou starve the best the corruption will subside the an equal degree. It's all the special interests going after all the money in DC that drives a great deal of our onverseas adventures. It's nut just a click of generals and defense contractors. Starve the beast and we will have less want, less waste, and less war.

It's already killing crops so no, it would not.

A CO2 rich environment kills crops because:

#1 the water is too acidic, carbonic acid

#2 the heat is so high the plants die before being able to consume CO2

#3 the rains are moving because of the warming patterns so you probably won't get enough water at all

Never go full retard. The high CO2 drove American corn brown, dried & burnt into the ground, unharvested, 3 years in a row.

Once we can get the soil in good shape as long as floods don't wipe out the crops we'll be OK but depends what you want. Orchards? Wheat? Soybeans? Where? Depends. It's not an exact science but you better be ready for a hard, hard time for 20 years getting it kick-started. Not like we have a choice if we want to eat. I suggest having bee hives wherever that may be & planting all the crops you need they can pollinate and lots of flowers they'd like. If you go the pesticide route all over again you'll kill the bees and kill us all, of course.

palladium catalyst that I know of for methanol fuel cells, The bloom box literally has its key chemicals painted onto surfaces but the inventor won't disclose the precise process. I guess once his patent is through he'll disclose. Last I read, however, Google was already using them for its server farms & cut its energy costs in half.

I'd just google the equation myself, so I suggest you do, since the methanol fuel cells have been around at least 10 years. What comes out is heat & water, and not much water, enough to double as a humidifier. I'd find it very handy, personally, though I imagine you could collect the clean water and drink it, that's also handy. Methanol is anything but difficult to come by.

This winter has broken every record up in the high arctic. Unprecedented heat has set the jet stream in a deep wave pattern and with long term blocking systems. The sea ice volume has collasped a staggering 80% since the 1970's. Now we face about a 70% chance of El Nino blasting it's record sea water temperatures back into the atmosphere. This makes world record heat in the year 2014 very possible. No, I'm not talking about the temperature outside your window. I'm talking global average, the overall earth atmosphere temperature.

The results will be worthy of note, because they signal only the first hint of what is now, according physical law, impossible to avoid. Physics will have their way, these laws are immutable everywhere in the universe. You simply can not change atmospheric chemistry and escape the laws of physics.

Since I know full well ZH readers hate to hear this, I will update what is in store with this years El Nino. This year may see an epic energy transfer from the sea, which has sucked up global warming energy for several years, back into the atmosphere, a place where we will notice this heat transfer. I can promise everyone that 2014 will offer up evidence of what I just said. Love it or hate it, it will be our reality.

Lastly, the positive feedbacks now evident in the Arctic seas and the Artic tundra are set to make today's global warming a minor event. The young ones reading this will, I hope, remember that Jack was warning you. Even though it makes him an unpopular poster on this subject.

No one seems to notice how the great lakes have become an ice cube either.

Finally, this article from 2010 is how a scientist predicted that a little ice age would begin in 2014 due to the decrease of solar output from the sun.

Well it very well could cause that. If you get the flu your temperature can only go up so high before it collapses and you die, ie. you get cold. The sun seems like an eternity for us, yet it will go out. Temperatures rise and fall, sure, but pumping toxic waste, radiation, and pollutants into the earth at an unprecedented rate will have unprecedented results.

And yes, that means that waste in the atmosphere will cause warming, or at least climate change as the systems will react to their own entropy as well as the causal entropy. So yes, cooling is a possibility, but in a disastrous way far from what denialists think. This is part of the plan of geoengineering as well, create cooling, block out the sun etc. Expect feedback runaway of entropic systems.

Your point about the last ice age makes no sense. The human race has initiated the anthropocene, a large enough event to cover the earth with its own deological movement. That has significant effects on the environment.

You are destroying your own argument, and all you have to hold onto is pure ideology. You say there will be a die-off and also a conspiracy, so which is it? Why would the 'controllers' want a false conspiracy if there also is no global arming from your perspective? In other words, you are arguing that there is no global warming, and yet it is initiated to cause die-off. Makes no sense. What are they going to do, Jedi Mind Meld them to death?

Hey ATG, lay off the stupid sauce

Why does one get the following fitted trends GISTEMP

1970 to 1997:  0.146 +/- 0.067 C/decade

1970 to 2014:  0.163 +/- 0.031  C/decade

If the warming "stopped" why has the rate of warming increased if I add the last 17 years in?

Even if I "cherry pick" the warmest month in 1997-1999 (Feb 1998) I get

1970 to 1998.2:  0.156 +/- 0.063 C/decade

It is mathematically impossible for what you claim to be true...

Why would the average be higher while the upper range (+/-) is lower (comparing the 1970-1997 and 1970-2014)?

Mon, 03/10/2014 - 00:47 | 4529540 Flakmeister
Flakmeister's picture

The first value is the Least squares estimate of the rate of change, the second value is the 95% confidence level on the upper and lower bound...

More data will give you a better estimate, smaller error...

Given the fitted trend upto 2014 is larger, it implies that temperature values on average in the last "17 years" have to above the trend line from 1970 to 1997, i.e. it is very clearly still warming....

Mon, 03/10/2014 - 16:25 | 4531869 X Yooper
X Yooper's picture

I asked my question poorly, sorry. It has been many, many moons since I learned this, so please bear with me. From 1970 to 1997, the range is 0.079 to 0.213 C/decade. There is a 95% chance (probability?) that it is equal to or in between these values. From 1970 to 2014, the range is 0.132 to 0.194 C/decade. Over the the two time spans, the actual values could be at the high ends of both (or at the low ends – we don't really know for sure). Looking at the time period from 1997 to 2014, the range is from -0.041 to 0.197 C/decade. That upper value is close to the larger data base 1970-2014 time period. So maybe it wasn't the second half that has made the difference that you are observing. I guess that was what I was asking – why are you convinced?

Definitely agree that economic caused climate change is more important than anyone knows. It should be obvious, the heat (yes, I'm aware it's colder locally for a few people), the storms, the whithering of the environment (any of the prepared folks spend time in the woods more than ten years ago? It's done changed.). It is, unfortunately, one of the major weaknesses of posters here - overdetermination of conspiracy, state, and climate balance.

I don't want that to come off as an attack, people here are very intelligent and good at reading a lot of the world - it's just important to doubt even one's own deeply held beliefs and be willing to argue points even if they seem long past. One of the largest problems today, I think, is that this society does reveal certain truths, or close to truths. And even though they are constructed from brilliant lies if we react to them too strongly we may end up with even bigger lies. Sounds absurd, but there's something to it.

To ward off any cheap attacks, Just because you get the chills doesn't mean you don't have the fever.

Temperatures are up, not down. You deny this. Thermometers prove you wrong as do infrared satellites.

We can actually see the temperatures hotter under the clouds of CO2 and methane, not just globally diffuse, yet you deny this, and it is the cars & factories making those clouds, not nature, not volcanoes, not forests.

It's us. We can post pictures from satellites every day until we all die and it would show precisely only what I am saying and the opposite of what you are claiming. All day every day.

Hmmm! People just don't understand physics. Or don't want to. Just as an example. "17.5 years with no change" In what? The earths energy balance has been up every year. You do understand heat energy is absorbed by Atmosphere, land and sea? By far the sea uptakes the most heat energy surplus caused by changes to the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuel is fossil carbon, it has the exact same effect as a volcano would spewing earths absorbed carbon back to the atmosphere. The carbon cycle has been reversed, that reversal means major climate warming. That puts mthane hydrates in the Arctic at risk. Then it is end game.

Well, Jack Burton, as a military man you would know that this article is not something that hasn't been discussed in military circles before, so this article is essentially clickbait for the ZH crowd. It's telling that Flakmeister didn't waste his time and that should disturb this crowd. And where is Johnny boy on all this? Although I have been registered at ZH for 10 weeks, I've been paying attention to climate change since I saw 'After The Warming' on PBS during the CNN war almost 25 years ago. That was 15 years before An Inconvenient Truth, I strongly recommend you watch it. Why? Because it essentially delivered the same message AIT did, but most people didn't take a very strong position on global warming until it became politically polarized thanks to Al Gore. Oh well, the science was developing regardless.

It's ironic that ZHrs fail to see that 25 years later the physics have trumped the politics. People believe that AGW is a hoax and a scam to introduce taxes (also discussed in ATW) yet fail to realize that if that were true, Al Gore would have been POTUS and then Obama would have pushed that in Copenhagen and tax collectors would be hard at work! They fail to understand that if tax was the objective, TPTB would not need to invest 25 years of effort to bring this about and still fail. They will go to their graves thinking they defeated the dreaded carbon tax!

Physics has not changed. Politics, however, is rapidly changing. ZHrs who today are, rightly so, happy to see Putin leading the battle against the real enemy, the international banksters, will tomorrow be screaming from the rooftops when Putin stands up in Paris and tells Obama that his 2009 "joke" position is no longer welcome. 'American' hegemony is on it's deathbed and that's a good thing but the blowhards on this thread will find that most difficult to accept in Paris.

You are very correct; global warming leads to climate change, OUR mass extinction event? See you in Paris!
