Russia Warns US Against "Illegal" Ukraine Bailout; Ukraine Commences Live-Fire "Drill" With Tanks

Tyler Durden's picture

The tit-for-tat sabre-rattling and rhetoric continues to build ahead of this weekend's planned referendum in Ukraine's Crimea region. This morning has seen 3 new threads beginning with Ukraine's "live-fire" exercises involving T-64B tanks. This was then followed by warnings from Russia of "consequences" of "unconditionally indulging radical elements" in Ukraine calling US financial aid "illegal" which was swiftly responded to by the State Department exclaiming it "unacceptable" that Russian forces take matters into their own hands and "do not create the right environment for diplomacy." Not positive...

Ukraine did its own sabre-rattling:

  • *T-64B TANKS INVOLVED IN EXERCISE, LIVE-FIRE TRAINING: MINISTRY

The Russians are not happy

Russia says planned US financial aid to Ukraine is illegal

Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that planned U.S. financial aid to Ukraine is illegal and outside American legal norms since it would be funding an illegitimate regime.

"By all criteria, issuing funding to an illegitimate regime that seized power by force is unlawful and goes beyond the framework of the American legal system," the ministry said in a statement.

The statement echoed assertions made earlier in the day by ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich. The ministry also warned Washington about the consequences of "unconditionally indulging radical elements" in Ukraine.

And Kerry has his own perspective:

U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT SAYS RUSSIAN RESPONSES TO U.S. QUESTIONS ON UKRAINE DO NOT CREATE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT FOR DIPLOMACY

Kerry told Lavrov it is unacceptable that Russian forces and irregulars continue to take matters into their own hands in Ukraine

Of course, this remains a constant distraction from the fact that Russian boots are on the ground in Crimea and the US (and the West) are stuck with how to "off-ramp" the escalating Russian threats without sanctions that would blow-back on to their own economies.

And then Merkel chipped in...

Putin does not rattle his saber more than once unlike the EU & The West he simply warns and if the hypocrisy continues by the West/EU empire he then acts. At least Merkel is not using the term invade and using softer language like Annex. And eventually once Russia entrenches Kiev will be next and I could care less...that is their business we have enough to concern ourselves with at home let alone lining up the next row of U.S. soldiers to come home in a black bag.

So now the Russian Foreign Ministry is expert on "American legal norms" and the "framework of the American legal system"?  Let's not let our arrogance get the better of us.  Surely there can be no dispute that one is not required to be a legitimate government of a country to receive aid from the government of the United States.  And I would hope, before making such statements, someone at the Russian Foreign Ministry would have read the U.S. Constitution.  It's a short document, and nowhere does it say that Congress may not legislate aid to anybody who is not a legitimate government of a country.  So, I think they're wrong about "American legal norms" and the "framework of the American legal system".  But what do I know?  I'm not in the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Ukraiine situation will no more go "hot" than Syria did. The West may have a weapons stockpile, but those with a truly vested interest in US hegemony have by far the most to lose if the West's financial system comes apart -- which it would most definitely do in a heartbeat if things were to truly spin out of control. It will all play out just like Syria; only the scale of rebuff and defeat for the US government will be greater, and ending in the last gasp of the petrodollar.

I'm quite certain everything looks very different outside of the the continental US. We, here are living inside a huge propaganda bubble in this country. So don't get suckered again, for.... how many times would that make now? America is far more toothless now than the average American can guess at this point, and the power elite is just hanging on by their collective fingernails with nothing more than bluster.

you are probably right. russia will have crimea and end of story. west can throw a hissy fit but that's about it. only threat to military escalation is the right wing nuts who will probably try to permeate into crimea to create some kind of conflict just before the referendum but russia is working hard to consolidate borders by taking over the border guard. there might be a chance that crimean tatars, who have been planted there over the years with turkish money, can have a say but only time will tell.

i personally wouldn't consider any referendum legit when you have (foreign) military rolling the streets but that's another story. it's a done deal anyways, just look at the population statistics.

I agree in theory, but unfortunately Iraq, Afghanistan, back to Japan  and with all others countries in the middle, point the contrary in practice by USA. I go even further US military bases in other countries could hinder the process of democracy of the host country, because the sovereign country could not chose a government hostil to USA, v.g., with and agenda to close the bases.

The alternative is for the West to talk to the Russians and to whoever can speak with authority for Ukraine. So far the Americans have been ineffective on the sidelines, the British seem to have given up doing foreign policy altogether, and only the Germans, the Poles and the French have shown any capacity for action.

A sensible and unusually objective article as for a Western newspaper such as The Independent. However, Poland should be excluded from FR-DE-PL 'troika', as it is hardly an impartial negotiator in this particular case, and replaced with a neutral country like Austria or Switzerland. Poles are generally disliked if not hated by western Ukrainians, just like Russians.

I - Ukrainian. I would like to explain to you what is happening. This is not a conflict between the Russian and Ukrainians . It is a conflict between the western and eastern Ukrainians Ukrainians.
- United States support the Western Ukrainians.
- Russia support Eastern Ukrainians.
Centre of Ukraine, including Kiev, always was mixed, but with a predominant influence of eastern Ukrainians. Now, with the support of U.S., western Ukrainians captured  center of Ukraine including Kiev.
You should know that the western and eastern Ukrainians - they are completely different people. They have different languages, different mentality, different cultural traditions and different religions.
- Western Ukraine - a former land of Poland and Poles live there , which we now refer to as " western Ukrainians."
Stalin cut off from the land of Poland and annexed by force to the Soviet Ukraine, together with the population.
- East, south of Ukraine and Crimea - a former Russian land and live there, Russian , which we now refer to as "eastern Ukrainians ."
Lenin and Khrushchev power cut off from the land of Russia and joined the Soviet Ukraine, together with the population .

Approval of Western propaganda that in Ukraine 83% of the population use the Ukrainian language, it is a lie and the top of Western hypocrisy.
Ukraine, Russian language as their mother tongue today use more than 60 % of the population.
In addition, between the western and eastern Ukrainians, has always been hostility and contempt. Ukraine - is an artificial entity which communists created by force.
- Poles in western Ukraine, infamous Russian east and pull Ukraine into the EU and Poland.
- Russian eastern Ukraine, Poles despise the West and pull Ukraine into the Customs Union and Russia.
This model of state, which was created by the Communists via mixed different nations by force, doomed to collapse.

I think that the true purpose of the United States - is to create a civil war between the western and eastern Ukrainians.

Good post..

yes  every family I know of in Kiev and area speak Russian main and especially in business Russian is used.

It is Lyiv Lvov and other western is poles, that cannot really be called Ukrainian blood (if there is such can be defined)

And many of the trouble are not even Ukrainian citizens.

The dna is not same. Brains and emotions not same. Russians up through Volga and Kazaks suffererd same depredations under Stalin the Georgian and commissars. Soviet was never a Russian construct. From 1917 thru Stalin was never Russians in control.

It has nothing to do with DNA

Eastern Ukraine was ethnically cleansed by Russia with the genocide of 10 million in 1933.  Thankfully, western Ukraine was under the control of Poland at that time and guess what, undead Ukrainians speak Ukrainian.  The Russians brought into Eastern Ukraine to replace dead Ukrainians...wait for it... speak Russian.

On top of this, Russian controlled Ukraine outlawed the use of Ukrainian but the bottom line 80 years later is that these 4th generation Ukrainians in the east have zero interest in being ruled by Putin.

not so fast, Kiev and the region nearby is the berth of Russia centuries ago, even before Ivan the Terrible. And the political cleansing was made by Staline, a Georgian, and the red comissars, majority of them jews, so the profound hatred of jews  is embede in Ukranians. to say that russia did the etnic cleansing is nonsense, because the russians were also purged by the commies.

"Eastern Ukraine was ethnically cleansed by Russia with the genocide of 10 million in 1933. "

No need to repeat the lies of Western propaganda.

South and East Ukraine - is a former Russian land, where in the times of Stalin, lived for more than 70% Russians. That there was a famine from which people died. But among those who died from hunger, 70% - it was the Russian people, but not Ukrainians. Because Stalin never struggled with the Ukrainians. Stalin fought with the class of prosperous peasants. He destroyed this class of the population, regardless of nationality or place of residence. Therefore, the famine was not only in Ukraine (in the former Russian territories with of the Russian population), but in the Russian Volga too.

Myth that Stalin destroyed Ukrainians was needs the West for to share two close relatives population and then conquer them.

But is Putin a revanchist for his moved into Crimea? Or is this "irredenta" (unredeemed). Hitler claimed the annexation of Sudetenland was legitimate because it was unredeemed and he was probable right. So, what happens if a plebiscite is held in the Hungarian portion of Romania and the outcome is to rejoin Hungary? The break-up of the former Yugoslavia has similar "irredenta". The map in this part of Europe does not have its political boundaries yet finalized. Putin probably has nightmares about the re-establishment of the former East Prussia. Too many multi-national states and way to many multi-state nations.

The Huns should be reunited! That was only done to weaken Germany and German allies. It is a travesty.

One million German soldiers died defending Konigsburg. The women and children got out and got to Dresden just in time to be firebombed.

Damn right East Prussia should be liberated.

About time Austria got South Tirol back, too.

Not to mention, the Flemish should get to divorce those Walloon buffoons.

Someone or someones really want a war... and all of you know very well that "they" are willing to go to any extent to get it. There is enough flash powder in the region to start just that...  Some poor idiot will be "advised" to step on their dick and - poof!

"...Cry HAVOC! and let slip the dogs of war..."
