Chairman Of Joint Chiefs: US Ready For "Military Response" In Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

With diplomacy having failed miserably to resolve the Russian annexation of Crimea, and soon East Ukraine (and with John Kerry in charge of it, was there ever any doubt), the US is moving to the heavy artillery. First, moments ago, the US DOE announced in a shocking announcement that it would proceed with the first draw down and sale of crude from the US strategic petroleum reserve, the first since June 2011, in what it said was a "test sale to check the operational capabilities of system infrastructure", but is really just a shot across the bow at Putin for whom high commodity prices are orders of magnitude more important than how the Russian stock market performs. And now, as Bloomberg just reported, the US has escalated even further, citing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, who "has claimed that in the case of an escalation of unrest in Crimea, the U.S. Army is ready to back up Ukraine and its allies in Europe with military actions."

So much for those peaceful hour long phone calls between Obama and Putin.

From Bloomberg:

According to the Web site of the Atlantic Council, Dempsey said that "he's been talking to his military counterparts in Russia, but he's also sending a clear message to Ukraine and members of NATO that the U.S. military will respond militarily if necessary."

"We're trying to tell [Russia] not to escalate this thing further into Eastern Ukraine, and allow the conditions to be set for some kind of resolution in Crimea. We do have treaty obligations with our NATO allies. And I have assured them that if that treaty obligation is triggered [in Europe], we would respond," Dempsey said.

According to the General, the incursion of Russian troops into the Crimea creates risks for all the countries of Europe and NATO allies.

"If Russia is allowed to do this, which is to say move into a sovereign country under the guise of protecting ethnic Russians in Ukraine, it exposes Eastern Europe to some significant risk, because there are ethnic enclaves all over Eastern Europe and the Balkans," Dempsey said.

And with that, the USDJPY ramp takes the pair to overnight highs, and futures are set to go green. BTFWWIIID!

More seriously, the real question is how Putin will react to this quantum escalation in verbal hostilities: wild guess here, but somehow we doubt he will pick up and leave.

I don't understand how the military is involved. This is Victoria Nuland's brat. She and other State Dept. jerks made this mess, let them pay for it. They should all get fired and evey single one of their assets stripped and distributed to all the military families who have suffered as a result of their needless wars. Make them pay. Why should the rest of us pay for their sadistic ideas with blood and treasure while they plan the next bloodfest. As long as they are allowed to create malicious mischief without question this will continue. If the US military shoots so much as one bullet over this they are damn fools. This is between the Russians and the Ukrainians and if the State Dept jerks are so upset about it give them combat gear and drop them behind Ukrainian lines. As for NATO, which is nothing but another welfare agency for lazy govt bureaucrats, we need to review and cancel the contract. It was only created to counterbalance the USSR. Or so we've been told.  They got too used to all the freebies and bennies and came up with excuses to keep it.

What the fuck Putin waits? Let go.

He knows bankrupt EU and US cannot afford a war. Plus European population is just about retired, they do not bother to fight.

Please come, make an end of this socialist nightmare in the EU. Russia cannot be that bad as long as you refrain from saying anything about administration. Russia has natural resources and huge potential, what is wrong being on that side?

Being oppressed by socialist tyranny what some call free west, having property confiscated by greedy, bankrupt government and being spied by NSA, home coutry police etc etc makes you wonder that democratic means are not working. So why not give a try for Russia?

That being said, the Joint Chiefs had to go this route. All the rhetoric aside, the EU and US both signed that fucking agreement in 1992 with Ukraine.

Fuck. One stupid fucking move and the fuse will be lit.

I can tell you, just by my ears alone, that something is up.

I live near an Army National Guard base in N.E. Florida.  It's been REAL quiet for a long time.  Then the Russians invade Crimea.

Now....I hear artillery and .30 cal machine gun fire......a lot of it at night.  Dogs are going beserk.

Coincidence or correlation ??  The timing is interesting none the less.

As we type, factions inside/in parallel/adjacent to/or formally connected to the intelligence community have dusted off the plans for a dark option. That option is one born from desperation.

We don't have to worry about Putin or his minions/allies. We have to worry about the extremist psychopaths entrenched within this comunity and the axis of equally evil monsters that have hijacked the West. Our West.

What happens next is the precursor to a reset. Its up to free thinkers and patriots to exploit the opportunity. Use your heads. Do what must be done. Don't think, act. We aren't alone and that will become clear very quickly as we see the change unfolding before our very eyes. There are millions of you.

The U.S. warmongers are now focused on E. Ukraine.  "They" are telling the sheople of America that "they" will protect the poor Ukraine (and the children) from "the big bad communist Russians lead by the meniacal Putin...who you know, was a KGB agent. " However, Putin will do nothing in the E. Ukraine, and the U.S. will tout that it saved them from the big bad Russians.  The Ukraines become debt serfs to the NWO and an US military base is constructed for the "global force for good" in E. Ukraine

Of course they have a choice.

If the people dont want Russia there, they could turn the Crimea into another Baghdad. Or Kabul.

Instead, the majority who are Pro-Russia are storming pro-Kiev buildings waving Russian flags.

Thats the part the West ignored in Afghanistan, then Iraq, but which Russia took notice of; never intervene when the people dont want you to.

And certainly never install a govt thats pro-you, at the peoples expense, when the majority arent in favour of you.

Ironic that the defenders of the free world choose to ignore this. Since its democracy on display; the Majority internally deciding.

So far nobody has attacked the Russians, who seem poorly armed. Why? If 40% of the people are against them, then that is a huge number. They could EASILY over-run them.

Or are you telling me the starving third world civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq were braver and more organised than the Ukrainians?

NATO had over 100,000 soldiers, 100s of aircraft dropping bombs by the hour. That doesnt even include the TENS OF THOUSANDS of Private contractors that flooded Iraq from 2005 onward, with their own weapons/aircraft, to fight on behalf of NATO.

Stop making excuses for the fact the so called 40 percent of Ukrainians you believe are against the Russian intervention are doing absolutely nothing to stop Russia.

If third world Iraqis, who are starved out and have very little external support, will stand up to over a dozen countries who are bombing them hourly, then Ukrainians have no excuse to sit by idly complaining amongst themselves.

Wed, 03/12/2014 - 12:47 | 4539275 mrblah

I just cant believe youre being so blind to the current situation myself, either.

How easy is it to over-throw a government or ruling party, with even 10% of the population against it? Very. Worked in Egypt, worked in Tunisia, worked in Libya. Hell, it even worked in Ukraine!

Yet, here you are, saying that because some unelected pro-Russian crimean party has decided to hold a referendum all is lost.

No wonder the Russians havent had to fire a single shot at anyone, apart from those fools marching for the cameras.

As I said, there is no 'open' opposition to the referendum in Crimea. Where are the mass protests against it? Where are the human-chains around Russian units, demanding they leave?

There arent any.

Which is my point. If the 40% of those who are against Russian influence stand up, and protest, THEN its unfair. But so far, nobody has. They have simply remained silent, or muttered objections amongst themselves.

The Russians, and the now pro-Russia ruling party in Crimea, arent going to listen or even pretend to care unless the people protest.

And by protest I mean REALLY protest; blockade roads, burn tyres, attack buildings and/or people of influence supporting the pro-Russia movement.

Pacifism gets you nowhere.

If they did it daily, no matter how much pain it meant suffering, eventually the Russians/Pro-Russians in Crimea would have to start taking notice.

Russia is no more immune to criticism, and civil unrest than any other country, and Putin is well aware that in his own country there are doubters, so the last thing he needs to be seen doing is ordering Russian conscripts to beat up innocent Ukrainians that merely disagree with Russia annexing/governing Crimea.

Based upon what Pierre Sprey has said over the years, he helped design the F-16 and A-10, the F-35 is a piece of shit as is the F-22.  He said stealth does not work and is a scam.  So the F-35 is junk like the GM Volt.  All made by union boys.

I think that the missing plane was the beginning of rival oligarchs going after other oligarchs directly without involving major warfare. This is not such an intelligent move and opens up direct attack on rivaling oligarchs and their family members.

That is if this is not a conspiracy and indeed seems to be as it appears.

Recruiting is at an all time high, and the "quality" and "quantity" of those recruits has never been better... I am still searching for the popcorn.  All I hear Dempsey telling Putin is that the US is ok with this as long as Putin does not expand beyond Crimea.  He is also also warning Europe that they are potentially setting themselves up for future land grabs.  Europe does not want to be invloved in this.  They can not afford to.  They are broke.  With that said, it does appear that Dempsey is itching to get into a fight.  At least Obama is not warning anybody.
