Chairman Of Joint Chiefs: US Ready For "Military Response" In Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

With diplomacy having failed miserably to resolve the Russian annexation of Crimea, and soon East Ukraine (and with John Kerry in charge of it, was there ever any doubt), the US is moving to the heavy artillery. First, moments ago, the US DOE announced in a shocking announcement that it would proceed with the first draw down and sale of crude from the US strategic petroleum reserve, the first since June 2011, in what it said was a "test sale to check the operational capabilities of system infrastructure", but is really just a shot across the bow at Putin for whom high commodity prices are orders of magnitude more important than how the Russian stock market performs. And now, as Bloomberg just reported, the US has escalated even further, citing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, who "has claimed that in the case of an escalation of unrest in Crimea, the U.S. Army is ready to back up Ukraine and its allies in Europe with military actions."

So much for those peaceful hour long phone calls between Obama and Putin.

From Bloomberg:

According to the Web site of the Atlantic Council, Dempsey said that "he's been talking to his military counterparts in Russia, but he's also sending a clear message to Ukraine and members of NATO that the U.S. military will respond militarily if necessary."

"We're trying to tell [Russia] not to escalate this thing further into Eastern Ukraine, and allow the conditions to be set for some kind of resolution in Crimea. We do have treaty obligations with our NATO allies. And I have assured them that if that treaty obligation is triggered [in Europe], we would respond," Dempsey said.

According to the General, the incursion of Russian troops into the Crimea creates risks for all the countries of Europe and NATO allies.

"If Russia is allowed to do this, which is to say move into a sovereign country under the guise of protecting ethnic Russians in Ukraine, it exposes Eastern Europe to some significant risk, because there are ethnic enclaves all over Eastern Europe and the Balkans," Dempsey said.

And with that, the USDJPY ramp takes the pair to overnight highs, and futures are set to go green. BTFWWIIID!

More seriously, the real question is how Putin will react to this quantum escalation in verbal hostilities: wild guess here, but somehow we doubt he will pick up and leave.

I can just imagine the questions the pit bull watchdogs of the media are pummeling the administration with.

Is the US prepared to go to nuclear war over the Crimea? Does the US seriously believe Russia is preparing to invade Europe? Do they have the military or economic capability to make that even plausible? If so, just how soft are our European "allies"?

I sincerely hope you're right and it is all "hype and bullshit", but I've got to ask.

do the recent actions of all parties involved make it clear that a war is out of the question?

or is it your own normalcy bias that is leading you to believe that this time is no different?

this is a highly dangerous and unpredictable situation of which reasonable, sane men are not in control of  and sooner or later the "choice" to go to war or not may be made by default regardless of intention.

when you play chicken, eventually it simply becomes to late to blink and the collision is unavoidable.

Gen. Dempsey just took us one step closer to that point with these comments.

Suggest researching the 1997 Partition Treaty. And Russia's current troop deployment.  (appears to be well with in the bounds of the treaty).

Keep in mind we have a currency war going on.  Think of Putin's roll in undermining our reserve currency status...  how has "history" treated other leaders that have attempted to do this?

And yes Putin is a thug, most of the world leaders are.  But this is starting to look like a US inspired propaganda and false flag event.  Most disturbing of all is the fact that I am not seeing any mention in the lame stream media that Russia has a right to have these troops in the Ukraine.

I am thinking of the history books I have read and what the German people and the world were told about the German invasion of Poland during WWII while it was occurring.

Will there be a hot war?  I don't think so, but most people in England did not believe Germany would invade Poland.

Your comment on normalcy bias is well said.

hardcleareye, there perhaps comes a point where one has to "follow the murder," rather than "follow the money." However, that is extremely difficult to do, because it requires attempting to think in a criminally insane way. Many people, if they try, can attempt to "follow the money" to its source. That path appears to make rational sense. However, very few people attempt to "follow the murder" to its source.  I am not asserting that I can, but that merely that I could begin to imagine that there are some such paths.

There actually is a combined money/murder system, and the murder system does back up the money system. The money facilitates the robberies, which can be made out to have some rational sense to most people. However, the killing that backs up the robbery almost operates in a world of its own, in the short-term. Sure, the power to kill is crucially necessary to back up the power to rob. Sure, there could not be any monetary measurements without the murders to back those up. Thus, being able to rob resources, or command and control the money, could be comprehended. However, being able to kill, or command and control the murder, is much more difficult to comprehend.

Human laws are extremely convoluted, since they are based on the ability to back up lies with violence. Overall, they may make some sense, because they tend towards providing access to natural resources and productive capacities, while denying those to others. However, that can not exist without the power to kill to back it up, which requires the murder systems. BUT, those murder systems tend to operate in a world of their own in the short-term, which is what they care about. Sure, they are paid for by the money system, and they back up the money system, and so, to that degree they can be made rational sense of. However, within their own frame of reference, the operation of the murder systems appears to be completely insane after the development of weapons of mass destruction. But nevertheless, the most criminally insane people are those who currently control civilization.

True stories that confront the Western-Ukraine-NATO-US-supported propaganda are flying around the internet.

Russia’s not standing alone in this; China’s with her and now it looks as if India may be. And now comes your latest straight-talk from Pepe, a powerful voice from the Asia Times:

“In Ukraine, the West supported an unconstitutional putsch against an elected government perpetrated, among others, by fascist/neo-nazi storm troopers (Svoboda, Right Sector) instrumentalized by US intelligence. After a Russian counterpunch, US President Barack Obama proclaimed that any referendum in Crimea would ‘violate the Ukrainian constitution and violate international law.’

“This is just the latest instance in the serial rape of ‘international law’. The rap sheet is humongous, including; NATO bombing Serbia for 78 days in 1999 to allow Kosovo to secede; the 2003 US invasion and subsequent trillion-dollar occupation and civil war creation in Iraq; NATO/AFRICOM bombing Libya in 2011 invoking R2P (‘responsibility to protect’) as a cover to provoking regime change; US investment in the secession of oil-wealthy South Sudan, so China has to deal with an extra geopolitical headache; and US investment in perennial civil war in Syria.

“Yet Moscow still (foolishly?) believes international law should be respected - presenting to the UN Security Council classified information on all Western intel/psy-ops moves leading to the coup in Kiev, including ‘training’ provided by Poland and Lithuania, not to mention Turkish intelligence involvement in setting up a second coup in Crimea. Russian diplomats called for an unbiased international investigation. That will never happen; Washington's narrative would be completely debunked. Thus a US veto at the UN.”

And here’s a footnote from a recent Global Research article:

[1] The pro EU-US putsch regime in Kiev is a product of nearly 25 years of planning and enormous funding by political agencies of the US government.  According to William Blum (Anti-Empire Report#126, 03/07/2014), the self-styled National Endowment for Democracy bankrolled 65 projects involving political indoctrination and the formation of political action groups.  Under-Secretary of State Victoria Nuland boasted that the US government had spent over $5 billion dollars preparing the ground for the putsch in Kiev.

This is pure bullshit bluster. Note that he says "if NATO obligations are triggered" - BIG IF. In other words, IF other NATO countries decide to go, we'll follow. The chances of any NATO country deciding to fight Russia is about zero - but of course that is exactly how WWI started - treaty obligations pulled armies into battle that otherwise would have been kept in their barracks. Nobody ever learns, and Generals live to see others die.

"This time, however, the last "fig leaf" of the West has fallen for good, exposing its huge hypocrisy. While until today, operations and wars in other countries (Yugoslavia, Iraq, etc.) were taking place under the excuse of the fight against terrorism, the supposed "liberation" of people from authoritarian regimes, or, the supposed defence of human rights, there is no excuse in the case of Ukraine and mostly Crimea. The right of self-determination is not applicable in this case, according to the Western hypocrites, who activate this right only in "special" cases to serve their interests, like in the case of Kosovo."

Yes, while we would likely kick the shit out of Russia in a direct naval engagement in the Atlantic, or even in a hot war in Africa, US troops on Russian soil is a very, very different matter all together.  When there are troops on Russian soil, those motherfuckers do not give up and they FIGHT.  We do not want to experience a Russia with its back up against the wall.  We would eventually run into issues maintaining all of our cool technological weapons, and it would turn into a grungy go for the throat on the ground brawl. Then the nukes start flying.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

In 1997 a treaty was signed with the USSR, Russia & Ukraine, The Partition Treaty.  Under that treaty the Russian navy is allowed up to

- 25,000 troops,

- 24 artillery systems with a caliber smaller than 100 mm,

- 132 armored vehicles, and

- 22 military planes, on Crimean territory.

Most recent news on troop deployment.

"The number of Russian troops in Crimea as of March 10, according to modest estimates, is 18,800 soldiers," Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis said at a briefing on Tuesday.

He said that they included 11,400 Russian Black Sea Fleet servicemen and 7,400 servicemen from the military units and associations of the Russian Armed Forces."

I suppose the general isn't saying anything we didn't already know was coming. these the pathetic attempts at diplomacy felt from the start largely just for show, without any real style or substance but necessary steps none the less I guess.

had to go through the motions right?

it has become obvious that Russia never believed that the west was sincere in wanting a diplomatic solution, from day one Moscow has been preparing for a large scale war, you don't put that kind of effort, resources and money into a dress rehearsal if you're not certain the show is going to go live. in fact they have been prepping for this confrontation for well over a year now, as if they new sooner or later they would be put in a position where it's either fight or accept NATO dominance on their own front door.

now here we are, what happens next could effect the lives of us all.

the real danger in this situation is that regardless of intent the escalation away from diplomacy, be it genuine or otherwise, is very real and with the comments of general Dempsey, obviously accelerating. once this process, this acceleration is set in motion it is very difficult to reverse, history shows us that.

we could very well wind up with a case of  "the choice making you" in this situation.

1. you don't have military options vs. Russia going beyond Napoleon's or Hitler's

2. you didn't really say anything because Russia doesn't threaten "NATO allies"

3. your veterans have already identified HOPE & CHANGE for the USSA:

Mr Nobel Peace Prize needs a war to distract the sheeple from the economic piles of shit they are now knee deep in.....

Remember how GREEN JOBS were going to save the world and make our economy better? Socialists have accellerated the economic decay of America, but stupid people still vote for it, or vote for a 3rd Party which is still a vote for Socialism!

Even Ron Paul has  said  MULTIPLE TIMES now  that libertarians  are stupid to vote 3rd Party!

America will never be changed via the democrat Party, and voting third party ensures that Socialism wins, and America loses.

Some people never learn.

Hoax and Chains is what the sheeple demanded!

Here you are Mr Dempsey, heres a novel idea, seeing as you are an old man whos probably never held a battle rifle, nows the time to pick one up, and your sons, and at your age probable grandsons, go on you and the boss idiots that want this shit go and do it then.

If push comes to shove this time old man, and I suspect deep down you already know this, you WILL be going first, you, your kith and kin, and all those of the psychophants you are lead by and obey, this time WE, the prolitariat will sit this out.

I am fucking sick of the outright criminality of the insane wankers who run run the West, yous fuckers couldnt organize a piss up in a brewery and you expect US daft cunts to go fight for GS and northrop weapons??  Never mind wall street and cast iron pensions and bonuses on the backs of us Plebs??

Go fuck yourselves, you are far more important in your imbecilic heads than you will ever be to a simple man on the street.  You will unleash the dogs of war you daft fucking twats, indeed you will, but it will be us fuckers that will see for you nation wrecking cunts before one poor bloke on the streets of Ukraine.

And I think you know we will.  We have simply had enough.  You have lost all moral and public approval, all rights for legitamate governance, you have been seen through.  These banktrupt nations you supposedly speak for cant, and wont take much more.

You will fight and die long before me, mine, my friends, my neighbours and indeed my whole community.

Look at Phil the 'Ducks' ribbons, look at that paedophile protecter Charles'Big Ears' ribbons'.

Utter filth propoganda they think we believe, good dog, the cunt 'Big Ears' ribbons must a full foot long pinned on his scrawny, never done a jot in his lifes chest.

And now THEY know, that vast swathes of the populations we live under know this.

They make me physically sick to the pit of my being.  They are inhuman.  And all for the love of money and power.

Exactly.

It was the man determined to keep America out of wars of aggression, Ron Paul, who garnered greatest financial support from active US military members during the 2012 presidential campaign.

The ArmyTimes reported in February 2012 that “Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is, by far, getting more military campaign contributions than anyone else in the 2012 field.”

A review of Federal Election Commission donor records showed that President Obama, who as a U.S. Senator had voted against war with Iraq, ranked second.

It was Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor running for the Republican presidential nomination who made it clear he would back all Israeli attacks on Iran, that ranked last among the three in military donations, collecting a mere $22,753 in 55 donations.
