Obamacare Blowback Begins As Republican Jolly Takes Florida Special Election

Tyler Durden's picture

In what Democrats must be hoping is not a bellwether for the mid-term elections, Republican David Jolly won a closely watched special election in a battleground district in Florida yesterday. As WaPo reports, Democrats and Republicans spent millions of dollars with Jolly favoring repealing and replacing Obamacare, which was a central focus of the campaign, while his Democratic opponent did not. The race was close (Jolly won by 3,400 votes of the 183,000 cast), but as WaPo notes, the Florida result is likely to raise Democrat concerns (especially considering the Democrat's money advantage in the race).

Via WaPo,

In the first major test of voter attitudes in 2014, Republican David Jolly won a closely watched special election for the U.S. House in Florida Tuesday, handing his party a narrow victory in a battleground district where Republicans and Democrats spent millions of dollars fine-tuning their messages on national issues ahead of the fall midterm elections.

Jolly's win in a Gulf Coast district just west of Tampa illustrated the political toxicity of the law known as Obamacare. Jolly favored repealing and replacing the law, which was a central focus of the campaign, while his Democratic opponent did not. The law's botched rollout has heightened Democrats' anxiety eight months before the midterm elections. The Florida result is likely to raise their concerns.

Money played a big part...

Sink, Jolly and their affiliated groups spent more than $12 million in the campaign, making it one of the most expensive House races ever.

As a result of Sink's money advantage over Jolly, she enjoyed a head start out of the gates at the beginning of the general election sprint in mid-January. Voters started casting absentee ballots -- a popular way of voting in the district -- later that month, giving Democrats an opportunity to capitalize on Jolly's inability to spend big money on a positive, introductory message over the airwaves. But Sink did not build a big enough lead in absentee voting to prevail on election day.

Democrats vowed to fight for the seat in November.

They have since regrouped to support this massive loser.

I promise NOT to vote for any politican who supported this disaster. My wife spent 3 houirs on the phone last week cutting through the crap...then another four hours yesterday.

My sister wasted similar amounts of time dealing with this crap.

They both had very nice health care plans prior to Obama forcing them onto his monster creation. Both paid out-of-pocket also for their plans.

Just about everyone I know has had similar problems. Both parties droipped the ball on this one and zero of them - neihter Dems nor Rep - who voted for the sh*t will get our votes this next time around.

A very weak candidate against all that money the jackasses brought in, Clinton in the lead. This was a democratic strategy testing "the repair of ObamaCare vs. the repealing of ObamaCare", and a clear winner emerged.  That District was won by Obama in 2008 and 2012, and a record 13 million dollars spent by the DNC. So, no amount of money can push the "fx-it" mantra now.

Fight Club was a lot more fun before Tyler let all the Team RED shills in...  Sad thing is the shills seem to actually BELIEVE that when Team RED wins it will somehow be better.  Hoe anyone could observe the events of the past decades and think that either team will make things better is amazing.  Sure BLUE will help you out while you're broke, of course they helped get you there, and RED will cut your taxes, but they'll fuck you with inflation not right in the asset class they're helping to bubble up.  Voting Either party is equivalent to getting a reach around while getting iron dildo fucked.

The genesis of todays TP started under Bush (red team) just so you know. And many MANY Libertarians are former "red team" members.

I'll speak for only myself regarding what you think government and our society should be, millions for charity but not a fucking dime paid in tribute, ever. And the only people who have profited in this 2009-2014 orgy of asset bubblization are the uber-wealthy...both red & blue.

We're over 17 trillion in "tribute" now, it would have been worse if the "blue team" had all of the executive & legislative branches...IMO.

nmewn, you know if the blue team would have gotten the chance to spend like a food stamp paday crackhead whore we would have had a much better chance of blowing up the FED. Its their BS money anyway. The conservative view of fiscal responsibility is only a show in congress and perpetuation of the parasitic banker class. Those of us who hold PM's better relize quick that this party doesnt start thru fiscal dicipine as long as we are playing with FEDBUX. Not 90% Silver and GOLD.

Fiscal dicilpine doesnt mean shit untill were rid of the FED and we have sound money.

I suspect it is not as much a function of Tylers letting more red shills in as it is a function of just how horrible the new extreme Dems have been.  I have been a registered Dem voter for decades, but the new extreme Dems have demonstrated very clearly in my mind that this is no longer my parents' party of the Dems -- nor even my own party of only a decade or two ago.

The new extreme Dems are apparently so un-American and anti-capitalist -- by historical standards -- that even I will likely vote a straight Repub ticket in all elections this year (except for the odd Dem in a race when no Repubs have any chance at all of winning as just happened in a local election I just voted in).

Obama's signature law, the Patient Destruction and Unaffordable Care Act, is the perfect example microcosm of the macrocosm.

By the way, what part of the US Constitution delegates the right to mandate what types of health care insurance are legal, even though no interstate commerce of health care insurance is permitted (due to other Federal laws)?  This delegation of this right to regulate health care insurance to the Feds is required by the 10th Amendment.  I guess this very simple argument was just too complicated, honest, or non-corrupting to be accepted by the Supreme Court who is obviously not interpreting the highest law of the land in a rational fashion anymore, in my opinion [assuming they ever were].

Also, even Dems like me are totally outraged that anyone in their right mind could possibly believe that health care could be made more affordable by adding a whole new layer of regulatory costs to providing it.  That is the most moronic idea I can think of at the moment.

And, as we all know, by the time you reach that level your pretty much compromised by the money and power that goes along with those positions.

Dovid "Get Your Jollies" may have said he supports the repeal of Obamacare, but I sincerely doubt we'll hear anything about that again once he gets to D.C. Since he was taking Karl Rove monies to fund his campaign he'll be under the Evil Emperors control until the fall elections. And, since he'll want to get reelected he'll do the Evil Emperors bidding just to continue the PAC money flowing.

But, if you want to put lipstick on a pig and run it up the ole flagpole in the hopes it will get Retardians to come out and vote this November, then so be it.

My guess is sHitllery will win in 2016 with the House and Senate in the Demofarts firm control. The anti-demonrat vote was 53%, quite impressive actually.  You need to count the 5% Libertarian vote.  Of course, you won't.

Pure Evil's picture

If 53% is quite impressive, then the fact that nearly 47% came out to vote for Alex Stink is equally impressive.

It just proves there's still plenty of voters willing to come out and vote for the Democratic party which in no way indicates any form of outrage against Obamacare.

Come on, if there were any real outrage against Obamacare the Democrats would have come out in mass to vote for Jolly. The Republicans were gonna vote for Jolly no matter what. So here we are just like an old married couple that refuses to budge an inch on a petty issue just to keep the argument going cause they don't know what else to do. Believe me, if Obamacare was the issue, then both sides should have voted for the libertarian just to show both parties what they think of them.

When you finally realize what the ultimate agenda is you'll realize it doesn't matter which side you vote for because both sides are playing for the same team.

Sure, you have TEA Party members providing a convenient distraction when needed, but anyone elected to Congress is immediately compromised, and if not, then they're ousted in the next election through ballot tampering or gerrymandering.

If anyone thinks that by handing the Senate to the Republicans this November while keeping the House in Republican hands will result in the ACA being repealed should stop taking the blue acid right now and replace it with the red acid.

Bringing in new bums won't do anything until people realize that the 'principal agent' problem is best solved by pure voluntaryism/anarcho capitalism where I vote with my money and feet and am my own agent, not delegating authority to anyone.

The system is definitely the problem.  It has not been corrupted.  It does exactly what it was intended to do, and will continue to do, regardless of which group of looters controls it.

Nock had it right almost 90 years ago: "I was struck with the fact that the republican, constitutional-monarchical, and autocratic States behaved exactly alike. This has never been sufficiently remarked. There was no practical distinction to be drawn among England, France, Germany, and Russia; in all these countries the State acted with unvarying consistency and unfailing regularity against the interests of the immense, the overwhelming majority of its people." ...

"The Cleveland Administration had long before proved what everybody already knew, that there was no essential difference between the Republican and Democratic parties; an election meant merely that one was in office and wished to stay in, and the other was out and wished to get in." ...

"The general upshot of my observations, however, was to show me that whether in the hands of Liberal or Conservative, Republican or Democrat, and whether under nominal constitutionalism, republicanism or autocracy, the mechanism of the State would work freely and naturally in but one direction, namely, against the general welfare of the people."

The two parties picked the two worst losers they could find. Alex Stink was Nancy Pelosi's hand picked favorite while David Jollies was Karl Rove's hand picked favorite.

The only thing this election proves is that the voters have not learned anything from the past, they're still willing to vote the party line no matter how god awful the candidates are.

At this stage of the game it wouldn't have mattered who won that election.

D.C. is weaving its tenticles down into Richmond through Federal subsidies and the northern Virginia districts that surround D.C.

There's a shiiteload of traffic between Richmond and D.C. on I-95 and D.C. is spending money to extend the HOV lanes down to Richmond, thereby buying influence and control.

It won't be long before Richmond and the northern counties will have become annexed by D.C. just like Crimea was annexed by Russia, with the southern and western counties looking to suceed from Richmond like the counties in Coloweedo and Calipornia.

The info Tyler presented is not really accurate in terms of how close the race was.  If you add in the somewhat significant percentage the Libertarian candidate drew (approx. 5%) then the ANTI-DEMONRAT vote was closer to 53%.  That's significant.  It's also significant that the Libertarians are grabbing significant numbers of disgrunted GOP voters.  It was those voters who gave demonrat Terry McAuliffe the governor's chair in Virginia this year.

The Republican establishment is utterly braindead and will sink the party to hold onto their power and money.   Instead of embracing these folks, they trash them.   So they are no longer among the automatic republican voters.

It's a major warning.   The majority is fed up with the demonrats but an increasing number are no longer interested in Democrat lite.

Also, to point out on this election, the Demonrat candidate lost the governor's race by 50K votes out of millions cast yet lost to this Jolly chump who is a lobbyist and philanderer.

Unless and until the GOP leadership is up ended, we'll not see any further inclusion of those who are liberty minded.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. The republican candidate won the special election in large part by running against the health care legislation that his party created. Shorter Jolly: "I was against it, after we created it."

Now who says there isn't a damn bit of difference between the two parties?

Thu, 03/13/2014 - 06:44 | 4542154 nmewn

And yet, the lie persists.

"But the version of the health insurance mandate Heritage and I supported in the 1990s had three critical features.

First, it was not primarily intended to push people to obtain protection for their own good, but to protect others. Like auto damage liability insurance required in most states, our requirement focused on “catastrophic” costs — so hospitals and taxpayers would not have to foot the bill for the expensive illness or accident of someone who did not buy insurance."

You do realize that frrreeeee! birth control pills are not a catastrophic cost...right?

"Second, we sought to induce people to buy coverage primarily through the carrot of a generous health credit or voucher, financed in part by a fundamental reform of the tax treatment of health coverage, rather than by a stick."

Did you know that corporations writeoff employee health insurance as an expense?

"And third, in the legislation we helped craft that ultimately became a preferred alternative to ClintonCare, the “mandate” was actually the loss of certain tax breaks for those not choosing to buy coverage, not a legal requirement."

Do you think not carrying health insurance should be a crime?

http://www.opposingviews.com/i/politics/don%e2%80%99t-blame-heritage-obamacare-mandate

And Massachusetts did not impose any law on neighboring states, if thats what you meant.

nmewn's picture

He (and they) abandoned what you call the "individual mandate" due to its deleterious effect on freedom & liberty. The object of the proposal (and thats all it ever was, a proposal) was to incentivize people through the tax system to purchase a catastrophic policy.

With carrots not sticks, is that term lost on you? If so, I'll splain. A carrot is used to lure an animal in a certain direction as opposed to using a stick to beat the animal into the direction you want it to go. The analogy is, fines/taxes/penalties/jail (making someone a common criminal) for non-compliance vs if you do X we will tax you less.

But it remains voluntary.

Now, personally, I don't go in for the state using its tax system to herd, control, funnel or otherwise inhibit or promote ones course of action over another...but thats all it ever was and that is just my view of all central governments vs any people.

So what we are left with is, a think tank proposal, that a NE governor latched onto (shocking I know...lol), implemented it and gave Massachusetts one of the highest health insurance costs in the nation, second only to DC. And then fucking "progressives" (uber-statist scolds that they are) REQUIRING...with the force of the motherfucking IRS no less that the entire country buy something from a private corporation.

So who is in fact, Dr. Frankenstein? Someone who made a proposal or the ones who did it? Does this apply to the Patriot Act as well, where a law focused on looking outward was turned in upon its own people? That was Obama and "the state" too.

And I noticed you didn't answer one of my questions but I'll ask the most pertinent one again...

Do you really believe NOT BUYING A PRODUCT OR SERVICE SHOULD BE >>>A CRIME?<<<
