Soros On Putin's "Blind Spot" And Why "Europe May Not Survive"

Tyler Durden's picture

"Europe faces 25 years of Japan-style stagnation," warns George Soros in this brief Bloomberg TV interview, adding that without deeper integration, "it’s an incomplete association of nations and it may not survive." While claiming that the financial crisis may be over they now "face a political crisis," with the voluntary association cracking due to the creditors (Germany) being in charge. However, he hopes "Ukraine is a wake-up call to Europe, because Russia has emerged as a rival to the European Union." Putin, Soros worries, "has a very different idea of what a society should be like... he has a blind spot - he believes people can be manipulated and cannot resist." That's not the case according to Soros, who exclaims "people do believe in freedom."

George Soros on what is facing Europe today:

"What is facing Europe, unless there is a more radical change is a long period of stagnation. Nations can survive in that way. Japan is just trying to break-out of 25 years of stagnation, where Europe is just entering. The European Union is not a nation. It’s an incomplete association of nations and it may not survive 25 years of stagnation.

"The financial crisis as such is over. But now we are facing a political crisis, because the Euro crisis has transformed what was meant to be a voluntary association of equal sovereign states that sacrificed part of their sovereignty for the common good into something radically different. It is now a relationship between creditors and debtors, where the debtors have difficulty in paying and servicing their debt and that puts the creditors in charge. And that divides the Eurozone into two classes – the creditors and debtors. The creditors are in charge and unfortunately the policy that Germany in particular is imposing on Europe is counter-productive and is making the condition of the debtor countries worse and worse. So, right now Europe is already growing a little bit, the Eurozone, but that’s only because Germany is forging ahead and more than let’s say Italy and Spain are falling behind. "

On Central Banks and whether he cares about the weakness we saw in the data and deflation:

"That’s going to be a very tough year for the banks. They are under pressure, because they have to meet the stress test. The banks have an interest in passing the stress test rather than reviving credit to the economy, so the banks have a transmission mechanism for the people’s savings channeling it into the real economy. They are not fulfilling their function."

On Ukraine's impact on Europe:

"Ukraine is a wake-up call to Europe, because Russia has emerged as a rival to the European Union. Putin has tried to reconstitute the Russian empire as a rival for the European Union and has been very successful politically. Not terribly unsuccessful financially and economically, because the Russian economy is not doing well at all, but Putin has outplayed, outmaneuvered the European Union, because Europe it [inaudible] to form, it demanded too much and offered too little. So, it wasn’t difficult for Putin to output it. But the Ukrainian people stood up and demonstrated by actually sacrificing their lives. Their commitment to be part of Europe, so this is a challenge for Europe and Europe needs to rediscover its own European identity instead of each country just pursuing its national interests and getting further and further into conflict with the others. There are certain core principles and this is a political thing – democracy, open society, freedom that Europe has believed in and ought to actually stand up and be united."

"Putin has a very different idea of what a society should be like. He believes that people can be manipulated. He actually has got a blind spot. It’s beyond his comprehension that people can spontaneously resist. He believes that if Ukraine resists that there is a conspiracy that people, that Americans, CIA, my foundation are conspiring to threaten him or to undermine is policies. And that’s not the case, people do believe in freedom. "

Yeah, Ernst Stavro Blofeldt, with his face melting a bit. Nazi collaborator stirring up neo-nazis for the good of an "open society". Of course that openness ends when it comes to central banks not issuing debt-enslaving fiat currencies and taking IMF austerity up the oompah.

Earth has only so much water, oil, gas, food, and ability to absorb growing numbers of people, at some point in time there cant be any more growth unless you have a world war to kill off millions so that they you can get back into the growth phase again.  So stagflation is a way of life, nothing wrong with it. Europe should keep the immigrants out and decrease its population by a few tens of millions, the life will be better.

Of course they are preconceived. The whole point of the Euro was to create the problems that lead everyone to the same conclusion -a Federal Europe. Soros even infers it if not outright declares ""it’s an incomplete association of nations".

There's no Putin mancrush here at ZH, purely because some people wish to show the argument from the Russian side by quoting a few article from RT or Russian Pravda. Not when we are total immersed in CNN, CNBC, Reuters, Bloomberg, WaPo, WSJ, blah, blah, blah... In terms of the actions of both men on the world stage, most folks on ZH view Putin the same as they view Obama... There's really not that much difference in terms of their actions. But it does seem that whilst one man is playing chess, the other is playing tiddly winks.

Soros: talking his book and singing like the good globalist canary he is.

When you view everything he says from the globalist angle, you realise that when he says "Europe may not survive", what he actually means is that "Brussels" may not survive or the European Union may not survive..Good riddence. Europe will survive just fine with or without the parasite that is the EU. It is Europa or Brussels or the EU that won't. I love the veiled threat that Europe "will not survive 25 years of stagflation". What? Without Brussels? Hahaha...What a clown.

And "Putin's blind spot" about "people do believe in freedom" is perhaps the same as the EU's blind spot? Hypocrisy at its finest.

Keep talkin' ya book Mr Schwartz, we wanna hear from your own mouth, more of the globalist agenda. From this hit interview, we now know that Russia is a target on the globalist agenda. As if that's a relevation??? </sarc> It's no secret that the plans for the encirclement of Russia & China are still in full swing. That Europe will be sacrificed at the alter of 25 years of stagflation, if it doesn't do what it's told, and vote integrate in order complete & finalise the Brussels takeover project. And that Central Banks are not doing enough to further the process of taking total control.

One final thing. The comment about Russia "emerging" as a rival to the European Union. Notice a few things. Firstly, Russia has ALWAYS been a rival to Europe. Since the Vikings discovered the Russian river system, and started mixing with the local Slavic population to form what we now know as modern Russia. The rivalry is not a recent phenomenon. Secondly, Soros does not mention that Russia is a rival to says it is a rival to the European Union...a bastard representation of Europe...that's rather revealing...Thanks again Mr. Schwartz.

The globalist agenda Soros is pushing shines through in everything he says.

Soros mentions Japan as going through 25 years of stagnation and in the same breath says that the EU will go the same route because it is not "...integrated enough..."

Hello, anyone home? Japan is one of the most "...integrated..." nations on this earth - if "integration" is what leads to break stagnation, Japan should have broken out decades ago. More integration for EU is certainly no remedy for "stagnation", just an excuse to further the NWO agenda...

I'm glad Soros credits people with "believing" in freedom. Note he didn't actually claim they HAVE freedom, even though the highly "integrated" Western MSM propaganda apparatus bombards them constantly, assuring them they are really "free", and that Soros is pushing "democracy".

The only "freedom" the sheeple have are in the choices offered to them at the store...

Any Soros interview is just an excuse to push the NWO...

But...but... compared to Obama & the general population of western leaders, Putin just looks like a defender of freedom & democracy and a keeper of peace. When Obozo was determined to bomb Syria, it's Putin who stepped in and prevented the war/bombing. Whereas Bush Jr invaded a country for false & purely made up reasons, Putin merely placed his army there to ensure a democratic process (referendum) go properly -- admittedly Putin has his own motives, but still. And who is funding and arming the terrorists in Syria? Right.

Now the warmongers (McCain & several other senators) went to Ukraine to prevent a referendum, defender of democracy they say? Right. Flawlessly Orwellian.

TPTB aren't desiring to bring down the system that's given them their power.  It's ALL about desperation.  If you're following, which is what THEY want, then you're not likley attacking: they could care less if you die in the caravan that's trailing them (but they're not looking to kill the system that creates that following).

The EU is fucked BECAUSE IT HAS NO RESOURCES.  Soros et al don't want to talk about such things because it becomes it's pretty easy to project the outcome (which they've known for a LONG time).

Agree with you Seer

But he's losing on many many more fronts than just the EU, and what I found interesting is that his usually reserved and cool demeanor he carries when he and his money is having difficulty getting what it wants, certainly wasn't present in this interview.

He's scared to death Germany may walk away from the EU and join that fellow that doesn't understand "freedom and democracy"...

Guarantee you that Germany may be very close to making a deal that would disrupt the U.S./NATO apple cart especially if the U.S. tries something deliberate and foolish like another 9/11!

Wed, 03/12/2014 - 23:29 | 4541678 Seer
Seer's picture

Yeah, you're likely correct.

It is all founded in desperation, pretty sure of that.

I think that a lot of it is just smoke to distract as things will crumble regardless of what they would want to do.  It's that resource shortage thing... and, I just cannot believe that folks such as Soros don't know what's going on in this regard.  It's all a game to them, who "wins."  Problem is that when the eventual winner is crowned the game ends.

At any rate, it's all heading in the direction that I'd said it would a LONG time ago, and that's that there wouldn't be any NWO because consolidation takes resources and energy that just won't be available, and that instead we'd have fracturing along geographic regions.  I could easily have been $$ rich had I wanted to run down these bets, but I would rather sleep well at night (and earn a more honest living- and be happier).

There are no incentives for Germany to stay in the EU.

As for the energy they have everything they could ever want from Russia's border, so why would they be stupid enough to mess with having it all turned off, and shipped to them from North America with the probability of a conflict on top of it brought on by the U.S. that is several thousand miles further away?

Having said that if Germany were to make a very public statement with something other than an homage to their Lord and protector that 9/11 event could very well be made in it's own backyard given it's track record.

meh. I think the French alone could take on Russia and win here.
Obviously "before there was Europe there was France."

I do not see what Russia "as doing" as anything Europe can't handle on its own actually.
Europe doesn't need a history lesson...least of all from me...but the purpose of NATO was to make sure naked aggression (Hitler) would never happen on the Continent again.

When last I checked the "problems" occurred in Kiev...not in Crimea. (that's two huge strikes right there in my book.)
Since Russia herself has no intention on "coming back into the fold"...nor it would appear of the West "relinquishing her grip" (70 years of peaceful settlement of disputes plus opening of borders plus the free movement of capital and labor across those borders does that to people) says to me that "Europe" might start off slow here...but once they get moving they'll be pretty much impossible to stop.

If someone can explain to me what diplomatic avenues Mother Russia can avail themselves to not just now but going forward for say...the next 100 years...i'm all ears.

At first glance the only friend i see them having right now is....ironically...the USA (aka "their last friend")...and it's the USA that's leading the attack here. (on that we can all agree...yes, yes?)

Maybe Syria.
Might take a while before Syria can "return the favor" though.
This whole thing doesn't just defy defies disbelief even.

Eventually resources will win out over ideology.

"Give us your tired, your hungry, and your poor" (or whatever it is)  Was possible not because of ideology but because there was an abundance of resources (and TPTB needed slaves to build their empire).

Soros is wrong in stating that Europe is going to stagnate for 25 years.  Europe has no future now, let alone beyond 25 years, because it had no resources.

Russia has leverage only because it has resources (and revenue from resources enables one to build up one's military).  This reality, of one country rich in resources being able to call the shots, is not new...

"people can be manipulated and cannot resist."

"people do believe in freedom."

There is no logical relation between these statements. Believing in freedom is in no way mutually exclusive with being manipulated and/or unable to resist (manipulation, coercion). I'd go so far as to say most people who believe in freedom are manipulated and generally do not, will not resist (whether they are aware of the manipulation or not). File that one under cognitive dissonance, pragmatism, and prioritizing 'is' over 'ought'.

I do believe Russians have a concept of freedom, actually multiple conceptions, falling under the general term ???????. Russians' conceptions of freedom are no more or less vague, self-contradictory, ill-defined, nebulous, and in practice subordinate(d) to any number of other concerns, than those of any given Europeans, Americans, or anyone else.

A "former" KGB/FSB agent and leader of a nation doesn't understand that people can resist? Did he sleep through the Chechen wars, which demonstrated both spontaneous and quite extraordinary resistance in a situation far more hopeless than that of the EU or Ukraine?

Wed, 03/12/2014 - 23:39 | 4541711 Seer
Seer's picture

The "trick" is with the words.  "Believe in freedom" is not the same as being able to "experience freedom."  Disney wants you to "believe" in all sorts of things.  It's the age-old trick of having people want things but never allowing them to actually have them (or to the extent that is suggested).

Moyers: What happens to the idea of the dignity of the human species if population growth continues at its present rate?

Asimov: It will be completely destroyed. I will use what I call my bathroom metaphor. Two people live in an apartment and there are two bathrooms, then both have the freedom of the bathroom. You can go to the bathroom anytime you want, and stay as long as you want, for whatever you need. Everyone believes in the freedom of the bathroom. It should be right there in the Constitution. But if you have 20 people in the apartment and two bathrooms, no matter how much every person believes in the freedom of the bathroom, there is no such thing. You have to set up times for each person, you have to bang at the door, "Aren't you through yet?" and so on.

The same way democracy cannot survive overpopulation. Human dignity cannot survive it. Convenience and decency cannot survive it. As you put more and more people into the world, the value of life not only declines, it disappears. It doesn't matter if someone dies. The more people there are the less one individual matters.

Issac Asimov, quoted in A World of Ideas by Bill Moyers (May 26, 1989), p. 276
