The Crimean Referendum Vote: A Photo Summary

Tyler Durden's picture

The much anticipated, if largely moot, Crimean referendum vote whether to break away from Ukraine and join Russia, began early on Sunday, even as Kiev is accusing Moscow of rapidly building up its armed forces on the peninsula in "crude violation" of an international treaty.

According to Reuters, Ukrainian acting defence minister Ihor Tenyukh said Russian troop numbers in Crimea were now almost double the level agreed with Moscow, and Kiev's forces were taking "appropriate measures" along the border with Russia. Tenyukh dismissed any suggestion that a militarily and economically weakened Ukraine might give up in the face of the Russian power. "Decisions will be taken depending on how events unfold. But let me say once again that this is our land and we will not be leaving it," he told Interfax news agency.

In the meantime, the vote has begun: "I have voted for Russia," said Svetlana Vasilyeva, a veterinary nurse who is 27. "This is what we have been waiting for. We are one family and we want to live with our brothers."

Last month's fall of Moscow-backed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich following deadly protests in Kiev has aroused fears among some of the country's native Russian-speakers.

"We want to leave Ukraine because Ukrainians told us that we are people of a lower kind. How can you stay in such a country?" said Vasilyeva.

Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) and close 12 hours later. Provisional results will be released late on Sunday with the final tally expected a day or two later.

Crimea's 1.5 million voters have two options: union with Russia or giving their region, which is controlled by pro-Kremlin politicians, the broad right to determine its own path and choose relations with whom it wants - including Moscow.

Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) and close 12 hours later. Provisional results will be released late on Sunday with the final tally expected a day or two later. According to Bloomberg, as of noon, the vote turnout at 44%, citing Crimean referendum chief Mikhail Malyshev in Simferopol. Malyshev also reported that the Sevastopol turnout at 49% at noon and has risen to 64% by 3pm, adding that no voting violations reported. The Crimean deputy PM said that he expects an 80%+ turn out in the vote with over 80% voting in favor of joining Russia.

Those curious what the Ukrainians are thinking:

So even as the vote which is merely a placeholder as Russia continues its military build up in the Crimea, Russian troops keep piling along the Eastern border, and with headlines like this hitting the tape:

  • DEFENCE MINISTRIES OF UKRAINE, RUSSIA, AGREE TRUCE IN CRIMEA UNTIL MARCH 21-ACTING UKRAINIAN DEFENCE MINISTER

It probably means Russia still hasn't amassed enough troops to continue its business in East Ukraine, a build up which continues through yesterday as seen below.

Meanwhile, this is how the vote looked like through the lens of photographers:

Ok, Slavic wife story time:

Not long after coming to the USA, I got another job and she asked me how it was:

Her: "so how did your first day go?"

Me: "great! Blah blah blah"

Her: "and how is your labor collective?"

Me: "My what?"

Her: "Your Labor Collective. The people you work with. In your department."

Me: (bust out laughing) "We call that a 'team' here."

God bless her, she's still Soviet at heart. She was also a captain in the Komsomol/Pioneer Marxist-Leninist Youth (the Soviet version of the Scouts, only more militant). She hates Obama and thinks all bankers need to be sent to Arctic labor camps. LOL.

George S. Patton: "The difficulty in understanding the Russian is that we do not take cognizance of the fact that he is not a European, but an Asiatic, and therefore thinks deviously. We can no more understand a Russian than a Chinaman or a Japanese, and from what I have seen of them, I have no particular desire to understand them, except to ascertain how much lead or iron it takes to kill them. In addition to his other Asiatic characteristics, the Russian have no regard for human life and is an all out son of bitch, barbarian, and chronic drunk."

If the fascist-thug rabble in Kiev attempt to damage the Russian pipelines, it will be a self-defeating action since Putin will have to send in the troops to protect them which will then cause more friction.

Why Putin must to send troops? West loves these fascists who want blow up gas pipelines from Russia to the West. This is not a problem for Putin. This is a problem for the West and their pocket fascists.

Exactly.  If the fascists damage the pipelines, Putin will be forced to cut off the flow of NG to and through Ukraine.  "Please, Brer Bear, whatever you do don't throw me in the briar patch," to quote an old American folk story.  Anybody consider that the Russian military buildup on the borders of Ukraine may be less to invade Ukraine than to keep the Ukrainians in?

I agree, it's Ukrainian land and they have their own army to maintain security over the pipelines. If they fail to do that then they only have themselves to blame, because both Russia and Europe will then crucify them.

I'm not sure I see the "mistake."  The whole Kissinger/Brzezinski strategy these past 40 years has been to cause chaos and disorder all around Russia and China, and particularly where there are resources (energy, mostly) and transshipment areas.  If Europe gets cut off, so much the better; makes them weaker, more dependent on the US and more angry at Russia.  Nudelman et. al. want to set the world on fire, and then hide behind our oceans and watch.

Not sure I understand some of the replies to my earlier post, so here goes ... ...

The reason Putin will have to send in the troops to protect the pipelines is because he gets revenue from the gas he sells. IF he decides to turn the taps off at some time to retaliate for sanctions, that will be his decision. He won't be happy for a bunch of fascist thugs doing it.

Also, the West (contrary to one commenter below) will not be happy if their fascist thugs destroy the pipelines and halt the flow of gas. Ask Merkel if you doubt me.

I really don't think it is stupidity and cowardice.  I think it's the Kissinger/Brzezinski playbook.  They've surrounded Russia and China with smoldering, blood-soaked failed states, and Ukraine has high potential to be another one.  They've already succeeded.  The goal is not what we'd consider "success," in the sense of order and clear US authority and control.  The goal is bloody chaos over the sources of energy and the trans-shipment routes. That way, the best-armed can do whatever they want.  With the goal being violent disorder, you'd have to consider our 40 year course of the Kissinger/Brzezinski policy to be a smashing success.

The official website of the Crimean referendum is down due to a cyber-attack that originated from the US, Crimean authorities say.

The exact location from which the website’s servers were attacked was Illinois University, Crimean minister of information and mass communications Dmitry Polonsky told Itar-Tass news agency.

“This place turned out to be the Illinois University at Urbana-Champaign. A massive scanning of the servers took place from there before the attack,” Polonsky said.

The assault started during the night (2300 GMT Saturday). At 1000 GMT Sunday, the referendum2014.ru site still wasn’t functioning.

Polonsky stressed that the referendum website has been “DDoS-attacked regularly since its launch.” The portal with .ua domain was replaced with .ru after several attacks.

The referendum is taking place in Crimea, with the vote reported to be peaceful and with high turnout, according to both international observers and Crimean authorities.

On Friday, major Russian government web resources were attacked with DDoS malware – those included the Russian president’s website, as well as those of the Foreign Ministry and the Central Bank.

Also, state media websites – the Channel One and Russia-24 TV channels – were under attack, reportedly from Kiev. The targeted Russian media said the attacks were linked to their editorial policy in covering Ukraine.

Finally, on the same day, an attempted radio-electronic attack on Russian TV satellites from the territory of Western Ukraine was recorded by the Ministry of Communications.

DDoS is the kind of cyber-attack during which requests are sent to the attacked website from many computers, usually virus-infected.

end

if these attacks did come from DC which I wouldn't put it past them, or Kiev (with state dept. encouragement and funding of course) it is yet another provocation that serves no other purpose than to escalate an already tense situation even closer to the edge of the cliff.

I guess while US foreign policy finds wiping out entire families in other countries to get one or two high priority targets "acceptable", people voting to determine their futures peacefully is not.

I grew up in farm country, and you're right.  The corporatization of agriculture was as destructive, though in an infinitely more subtle way, than Soviet collectivization.

Growing up out there I understand our tendency toward Socialism.  If there weren't a strong collective sense, everybody would freeze to death in the winter.  Trouble is, the useful aspects of that get subverted while the destructive aspects are played up.  The idea would be for a bunch of self-directed, autonomous individuals to work together to solve problems they can't solve alone.  The reality tends to be for a bunch of people looking for authority to submit to, undermining each other so nothing gets solved.  It's the people who want to take on that authority role you gotta watch out for.  In other words, it's like anyplace else, except colder.

Is it really so difficult to grasp that no one has to take any side in this?

If no one did do you know what would happen?

Not a thing.

If everyone took a side though, do you know what would happen?

Do I need to spell that out?

There is no onus on anyone to take any side, in this, nor on almost anything else this system wants you to keep knee-jerk responding to all the time, like a silly cow getting constantly led around from one thing to another with a steel ring through the nose.

Although I agree that folks should stay out of this business, I DO see there being an issue over energy; and, as tends to be the case, we hide this skeleton so that we don't show our weaknesses.

At some point the Ukrainians would have to shell out for  not-so-subsidized energy (not to mention pay for what they already owe).  And, Europe has to realize that it's future energy needs aren't a sure thing: nor should anyone else, even those who currently have large reserves- finite things being what they are, finite.

Sometimes, you have to do some searching.  If you look up a date, today's date, March 16, some history is recorded on that date.

One fact from March 16, 1190 CE:

York's Jewish community was forced to retreat to an old castle where all 150 members either committed suicide and/or burned themselves to death to avoid being murdered by crusading Christians hell bent on killing jews and muslims.

http://www.historyofyork.org.uk/themes/norman/the-1190-massacre

Those Christians can be some crafty devils from time to time.

Take note that the year was 1190, 911 in there, you know, and 3/16 as in John 3:16.  Maybe just a coincidence.

Also, on March 17, 1914, Russia increased its armed forces from 460,000 to 1,700,000.

http://www.keyway.ca/htm2014/20140317.htm

Stop quoting your laws, we have swords said General Pompey.

Thanks...I had heard it but could not substantiate it till today.

"After rioting had engulfed the towns of Norwich, Stamford and Lincoln they began in York with a mob attempting to burn down Benedict’s palatial house. The Jews were officially protected by the king as his feudal vassals and sought protection in the royal castle, barricading themselves into the wooden keep. The rioters, meanwhile, were egged on by members of the local gentry called Richard Malebisse, William Percy, Marmeduke Darell and Philip de Fauconberg. These men saw the riots as an opportunity to wipe out the extensive debts they owed to Jewish money-lenders in the city."

Maybe SOMEBODY  wants THEIR DEBTS wiped out. Maybe who knows.....

The Unstable Alliance of Nationalists and “Mainly Jewish Oligarchs” in the Ukraine

Kevin MacDonald
Occidental Observer
March 16, 2014

The main narrative in the Western media on Ukraine is that the “Ukrainian people” have delivered themselves from the evil, corrupt Yanukovych government. The nationalist role in toppling the government and its presence in the new government has been downplayed, with assurances given by Jewish organizations and Jewish writers in the NY Times that Putin’s claims of incipient fascism and anti-Semitism were nothing but cynical ploys to rationalize Russian aggression....

Well, if Ukraine is being run by neo-nazis where are the nazi style crimes, propaganda, and aggression?  Sorry but one or two people killed in a protest in a month doesn't seem all that monstrous to me.  That is a lot safer than living in Chicago or Detroit for a month.

Does anyone doubt how this referendum will go? How's you think a referendum in the Sudetenland would have gone? Russians want to make it Russia? Maybe Mexicans want to re-annex the American southwest.

I see lots of accusations that it is CIA, neo-Nazi's, Jewish Oligarchs, etc. assertions without proof. Liberty and revolutions are messy and lots of them fail. I remember the French helping the U.S. Revolution. What would most ZH conspiracists have said about that?

I wish them well.

Oh noes!  You asked for some kind of proof.  This is ZH comments.  Proof is fake.  Fake is proof.  You will get plenty of red from the trolls.

Certainly there is "some" truth to a lot of the allegations.  Not to excuse those making them or those carrying them out but the Ukrainian people were sick of Yankabitch and through his ass out.  He'd have been hanging from a lightpost if he hadn't run away.  They did it with human waves, not tanks or bombs.  Good for them.  If I were them and someone (CIA whomever) offered assistance I'd take it too.  What moron (que hunchback hillary troll) would not take help when revolting against their government?

As for Jewish Oligarchs... Putin and Obama (and the Chinese Premier for that matter) are not jewish.  They control vitually all of the military might in the world.  They are bad guys who do bad things to other people.  Think about this:  You have an army.  Are you going to bend your knee to a banker because he has a supertanker full of paper?

Just to make things crazy, toss in some CIA, FSB, NSA, XYZ and then you have to wonder who is really running the show.  Sometimes it appears to be bankers.  Sometimes heads of state.  Who really knows?

Ask for any kind of proof of someone's statements of fact and you only get downvotes.  Truth?  You can't handle the truth.  The truth is messy and confusing and probably doesn't fit any single narrative.

Fair question. You can see videos of the amazingly opulent home of Yuko. They were giving tours as proof of his corruption. Look up his history of how he became obscenely wealthy. You see real time videos of people in the street being shot and burning police vehicles. You see Russians in Crimea now holding an annexation referendum. This is right in front of you. You see Putin, his statements, etc.

My point is that all the posters who propose to "know" who is behind the curtain and what is really happening and the point of it all...don't. This includes me.

What I suspect is that there are many factions, a lot of interests, and uncertainty. In the American revolution there were a dozen factions; monarchists, Torries, Federalists, etc. it could have gone many ways.

And you think that it's OK for the US and the West to meddle?

It's that stupid argument that gets us nowhere.  One side says that it's not going to stop until the other does.  Surprise: it never does stop.

Where's the walk?  Where is the US and the West showing that they take the high road?  Is it the US's saturation of the globe with it's MIC?  It's droning of people in non-declared war zones?

Just what are you espousing here?

I have made myself pretty clear that I like NO govt, and that the one I'm currently under the thumb of ought not, as its founders declared, meddle in the affairs of other nations.

The Ukraine, and Europe, needs to face the reality that they're dependent on energy that they do not possess.  If they don't want to pay the price then they'll wither have to go to war to steal it or to work for better deals (in the case of Crimea, hitch up to the trough).

I have it on the good authority of CNN that today's vote is being carried out by people with guns to their heads. Russian invasion forces are directing the voters on how to vote. Not only that, but CNN has evidence of multiple votes by individuals, and voters using only a passport for identification, being allowed to vote with only this as their ID. The election is invalid, the world says so, so after the election the Crimea will be an international criminal state.

Since we are on the topic of Russia, I thought I would post a slightly off-topic but very relevant piece written by Russian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan after he demanded their surrender. This was their response:
(Just replace references to the Sultan with Obama)

"O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are you, that can't slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil excretes, and your army eats. You will not, you son of a bitch, make subjects of Christian sons; we've no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck your mother.

You Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw your own mother!

So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!"

I still can't stop laughing.

There is little doubt that the Crimeans want to join Russia as they fear the intentions of the Ukranians with good reason.

But how things change. Here is an old Russian joke about hw things once were in communist USSR.

Russian General: Comrade Stalin, I have bad news and good news,

Stalin: What is the bad news?

Russian General: The opposition got 51% of the vote.

Stalin: And what is the good news?

Russian General: You got 52% of the vote.

Jack, I disagree- - I predict she won't get there. That's not to say someone equally sick and insane won't. But if Hitlery couldn't get past D'ohbama, it means some very serious powerbrokers aren't down with her act. Then again, not that this is any vision that I'd wish for, just analyzing it all...

Hillary did amass a lot of support.  And, she took some of the bark out of the neocons and fake "conservatives" by being a big war-drum banger.

Benghazi was no more than stuffing the skeletons into the closet, all standard political cleanup after the CIA dirty work.

I suppose, however, it depends on whether someone can demonstrate louder war-banging abilities.  In this regard I don't think the Dems have any "superior" canidate available, and the last "star  out of nowhere" (Odroner) has proven to be a huge liability going forward.  Republicans also aren't likely to pull some newcomer out of the hat, though with what is left I'd think that they might think twice; and, well, there's always John McCain...

When are we ever going to get it that we've got a failing empire?

It's the System... playing with it only encourages it...
