Crimea Will Formally Apply To Join Russia Tomorrow After 95.5% Support Referendum; US, UK, EU Reject Results

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: While earlier exit polls indicated strong support, the preliminary results are now being announced:

  • *CRIMEA TO JOIN RUSSIA BACKED BY 95.5%: PRELIMINARY RESULTS
  • *CRIMEA TO REMAIN IN UKRAINE BACKED BY 3.5%: PRELIMINARY RESULTS

Crimea will apply tomorrow to join Russia:

Crimea's regional government will make a formal application today to join the Russian Federation, the local pro-Moscow leader said on Twitter after a disputed referendum to break away from Ukraine.

"The Supreme Soviet of Crimea will make an official application for the republic to join the Russian Federation at a  meeting on March 17," Sergiy Aksyonov said in a tweet.

The celebrations are widespread throughout Crimea:

Putin and Obama have spoken:

  • *PUTIN SPOKE TO OBAMA BY PHONE, KREMLIN WEBSITE SAYS
  • *KREMLIN SAYS PUTIN-OBAMA CALL INITIATED BY U.S. SIDE
  • *PUTIN TOLD OBAMA KIEV REGIME UNABLE TO CURB ULTRANATIONALSTS
  • *PUTIN TOLD OBAMA CRIMEA VOTE FULLY MET INTERNATIONAL NORMS
  • *PUTIN SAID NEED TO JOINTLY SEEK SOLUTION FOR STABLE UKRAINE

And then this:

  • *KREMLIN SAYS OBAMA CONGRATULATED PUTIN ON SOCHI PARALYMPICS

With a voter turnout (79.09%) that exceeded every US Presidential election since 1900, the people of Crimea have spoken:

  • *CRIMEA JOINING RUSSIA BACKED BY 93% OF VOTERS: EXIT POLL
  • *U.K. FOREIGN SECRETARY: U.K. WON'T RECOGNIZE CRIMEAN REFERENDUM

Ukraine's leaders have called up 20,000 men for a newly-created National Guard as despite the so-called "truce" Russian APCs and Tanks are rolling. Pro-Russian supporters are burning books in Donetsk after storming anti-Russian buildings. The White House is already out rejecting the vote (before the final results are released).

Voter Turnout (by region):

As exit polls confirm overhwleming support for Crimea to join Russia...

  • Exit poll by Crimea-based Republican Institute for Political and Sociological Studies released by Kryminform news service.
  • 93% of voters back joining Russia: exit poll

Despite the so-called truce, Russian APC and Tanks are moving...

Pro-Russian supporters are burning books in Donetsk

And Kharkiv is dominated by Pro-Russia supporters carry this huge Russian flag...

White House Statement:

The US is rejecting the vote:

The U.S. is rejecting the vote in Crimea even before the results are released.

The White House says Sunday's referendum on succession is contrary to Ukraine's constitution.

The U.S. says the world won't recognize the results of a vote held under what it says are "threats of violence and intimidation from a Russian military intervention that violates international law."

A written statement from the White House calls Russia's actions in Ukraine "dangerous and destabilizing."

The U.S. is urging other nations to "take concrete steps to impose costs" against Russia.

Secession was expected to be approved overwhelmingly.

And so is the UK:

  • *U.K. FOREIGN SECRETARY: U.K. WON'T RECOGNIZE CRIMEAN REFERENDUM
  • *U.K.'S HAGUE SAYS CRIMEAN REFERENDUM UNCONSTITUTIONAL
  • *U.K.'S HAGUE SAYS THERE SHOULD BE CONSEQUENCES FOR RUSSIA
  • *HAGUE: `UNACCEPTABLE' FOR RUSSIA TO TAKE MORE ACTION IN UKRAINE

And The EU:

  • *EU REITERATES CRIMEAN REFERENDUM IS ILLEGAL, ILLEGITIMATE
  • *EU SAYS IT WON'T RECOGNISE OUTCOME OF CRIMEAN REFERENDUM
  • *EU TO DECIDE ON ADDITIONAL MEASURES AGAINST RUSSIA TOMORROW

And the French:

  • *FABIUS SAYS CRIMEA REFERENDUM ILLEGAL, AGAINST UKRAINE CONST.
  • *FABIUS SAYS RUSSIA HAS RESPONBILITIES AS UN SEC. COUNCIL MEMBER
  • *FABIUS SAYS RUSSIA MUST RESPECT UKRAINE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY

Now it's up to Putin... to weigh these potential "costs" against his gains...

It's just a good thing we accept 100 percent turn out and 100% voting in North Korea for Kim Pot Belly the Kid.

..not a freakin' peep from the hypocrite "leaders" in the west.

Not surprising the Western led banking cabal nations "condemn" 95% of the people in Crimea.  I bet they would condemn 98% of the peoples interest in every other nation, which is why I find the apathy in the West so disturbing.

Get rid of the money hungry corrupt bastards and then votes will actually mean something.  Until then, no use in voting in this banker corrupt cabal bullshit economy, sucking dry every working citizen through tax paid wars and terrorism.

Fuck you FED.  Die already, you parasites.

So what is it that Russia is potentially losing?  The reason countries use currency is to trade.  What does Russia NEED to import from the West?  Europe and the US don't produce much.  The question is where is Europe going to get its natural gas from and how much more expensive will it be?  Sanctions against Russia will only destablize an already teetering European Union.

vote must be liberated. Every one must have  right to sell his vote. There was a time the cons men want to establish and exchange to transact carbon quota. A big ponzi sheme to earn money for nothing. Why not an exchange for election votes with futures, options and derivatives?

I would like to address the graph.  55 billion loss in stock market of Russia, those companies and their infrastructure are not going anywhere, the oligarchs may take a hit if they try to cash out, but they are not dumb, just numbers on paper. it means nothing.  THe 160 billion in assets overseas well most of it has been brought back into Russia the ones that haven't are in offshore shell accounts and most of these have the real owners names hidden from prying eyes. 11 billion spent to counter rouble fall, not a problem once the US dollar loses reserve currency status, the USA will be spending a lot more to prop up its dollar with dwindling gold reserves. 7.% of EU export goes to Russia, that is a lot of people on the streets without jobs in Euro capitals and a big strain on fragile national budgets if they are taking social welfare. Crimea will make tons of money for Russia, Ukraine was taking out 80% of tax proceeds and not improving infrastructure, the Russian dont work that way, look at Sochi. I have said before that Crimea is the Pearl of the Black Sea

The Russians will be all over the beaches there dropping serious money that the Ukrainians did not have.  Losing Crimea is a BIG thing for Ukraine, loss of BIG revenue, and mortal blow for Ukraine nationalism since other regions will now follow, nobody wants to be without Crimea.  The place is also a goldmine, someone said that 1/3 of Ukraine Gold resources are in Crimea, the other in the Eastern part of the country.

I've always wondered "why the name"?  Trying to evoke pity?  It's a heavy yoke to carry, but the systemic cognititve dissonance probable eases that.

Judging by the posting history, I'd say "enabled jingo" is more accurate.  I grew up in the "John Wayne White Hat USA Is Always The Good Guy" era, but never swallowed one but of the bullshit.  Some, however, make pigs of themselves on the swill.

Here in Western Australia, our local media actually does think like that.  Now I see where they get it from.

Yep.  But 95.5%?   That's a little too high for any vote.  Suspicions. There are always 20% who won't go along with anything.

Of course North Korea and Ohio could be different.

that'd be the 21% that didnt turn up to vote

I wonder if there is any region that would like to vote to leave Russia. Like maybe parts south of Lake Baikal might want to join Mongolia and parts of Sakhalin might want to join Japan.  Or maybe some areas east of the Volga would like to join Khazakhstan.  I wonder.

http://www.rt.com/news/canada-police-brutality-arrests-166/

Yeah I bet parts of Canada woud like to break away too from the police state, may want to throw in a bunch of American states too, I am all up for it, if you have enough citizens sick of a police country run by dual citizens they should be able to walk away.  With all those Russians regions you mentioned they chose to stay with Russia when the Soviet Union broke apart.  Crimea would of liked to also and now it did.

chemystical's picture

Why the pretense of referring to "dual citizens"?  Hasbara knows of whom you speak either way, so just call them 'Ziofilth' and stop dancing around the issue.  People need to wake up, and need to see exactly who the enemy is.

Alternatively, name the other country of the dual citizenship: that "shitty little country" ISRAHELL.
