Crimea's regional government will make a formal application today to join the Russian Federation, the local pro-Moscow leader said on Twitter after a disputed referendum to break away from Ukraine.
"The Supreme Soviet of Crimea will make an official application for the republic to join the Russian Federation at a meeting on March 17," Sergiy Aksyonov said in a tweet.

The U.S. is rejecting the vote in Crimea even before the results are released.
The White House says Sunday's referendum on succession is contrary to Ukraine's constitution.
The U.S. says the world won't recognize the results of a vote held under what it says are "threats of violence and intimidation from a Russian military intervention that violates international law."
A written statement from the White House calls Russia's actions in Ukraine "dangerous and destabilizing."
The U.S. is urging other nations to "take concrete steps to impose costs" against Russia.

I spoke with some family in Russia and they asked what I thought about it.( I am an Merican) I said I really don't know what to think and that I am not sure that I even care that much. It's just not my business and Russia has been involved in Crimea since at least the 1700's. They have a major naval base there and have for a long time. The only thing I cautioned on was that there will be more mouths to feed. Russians understand the term of feeding a mouth. I was told that the mouths will be fed and there is little concern about that fact which does make sense.
Crimea is primarily Russian anyway. I married into that country for a reason and it was not because I thought Russians were weak. There really is a difference in the language as well. I have known about this battle long before ZH even existed but it is not my fight per se. These travel restrictions could be a real problem and an unfair penalty on my children. Somehow, over the years we have found a way to get along just fine and develop some respect for each other. We have hosted many Russian student friends here.
Russians are not like us in many ways. They have a spirit in them that goes something like this: "Oh, here comes shit our way again. Fuck it, we will fight it and survive." My three year old son does not speak English but can speak Russian very well. I do not speak Russian. Perhaps some prhases. I have insisted that he be raised to be this way and not like an American child. My son punches me in the balls sometimes on a sneak shot. I hate that.
My daughter speaks Russian as well. Yep, half the time I do not know what the hell is even being said around this house. That is largely because I am getting old and stupid and I don't learn nearly as quickly as I used to be able to do. Maybe I already learned what I need to know. I want the wife and children to be able to leave and live a good life but I am staying here.

First we have a unaninimous vote of the Duma to authorize intervention in Ukraine, then we have near unanimous approval for Crimea to annex to Russia. I have utterly no idea why the Crimeans think it is so great to be part ot Russia, but I will say, that Putin has a tendency to make everything he does appear legitimate by near 100% support for his initiatives. This is the true definition of a dictator, no one in his right mind is going to go into a Crimean polling place, with Russian military going around openly, where reporting of votes against Russia likely reported to secret police, imprisonment, punishment etc.
If the people in Crimea are not motivated enough to fight for their independence, then why should they count on anyone else to do it for them? Likewise for East Ukraine and Ukraine in general, they need to show EU, US and UK their motivation to fight to be independent. Cause if they are not motivated enough to fight to be free of Russia, they are about not to be.
What is scary is this North Korea type pyschosis is afflicting a very powerful country, one who can devastate many places in case of a war. A large country such as Russia is not unaninous in any political issues. This pro - Russian blog attempts to rationalize much of this Russian behavior because of all the perceived sins of the United States and western powers.
