Russia Launches Military Aviation "Drills" Near East Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

Just days before the annexation of Crimea, while promising that they would not instigate actions to antagonize the West, Russia launched a massive unscheduled military drill. Now, with Crimea under their pro-Russian forces control, and despite promises that Putin seeks to go no further than Crimea, the Wall Street Journal reports that Russia will begin unscheduled military aviation exercises in regions bordering Ukraine. The crews will be practicing "actions during airstrikes" on enemy military targets, communications jamming, air defense and attacks by military jets, the spokesman said.

Via WSJ,

Russia will begin military aviation exercises in regions bordering Ukraine, Interfax news agency reported citing a spokesman for the military Wednesday.

The news comes a day after Russia signed a treaty to annex Crimea.

The military exercises, which will involve 40 combat crews and 300 servicemen, will go on till the end of May and are scheduled, the spokesman said.

The crews will be practicing "actions during airstrikes" on enemy military targets, communications jamming, air defense and attacks by military jets, the spokesman said.

On Thursday the Russian military already announced that it was increasing the intensity of military exercises involving troops on the ground in regions bordering Ukraine.

Last month Russia announced unscheduled military exercises that involved 150,000 troops in regions close to its border with Ukraine. This prompted fears that Russia was considering military action in mainland Ukraine. The soldiers involved in the drills were ordered to return to their bases last week but the order didn't apply to troops that had been sent to Crimea.

So once again, Putin spoke, made promises, the market bought it, and tensions escalated...How odd that the market expected the Russian president to telegrpah his intention in a public broadcast...

Euro-Style Fascism (TM) is not only an ideology, it's also a question of style

a proper euro-style fascist or proto-fascist leader as we had in Portugal, Spain, Vichy-France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, etc. etc. has to be seen slapping the corporative parts of society around, "until they see sense"

the "corporative parts", aka corporations in fascist ideology are not what we nowadays call corps. it's the "associations" in the economy, i.e. cartels, lobbys, banking groups, corps and also all things socialist, including trade unions (that is what Mussolini meant with corporativism, i.e. the fascist leader having a meeting with industrialists and workers, a "good meeting" because the leader has a gun on the table, ready to be used on those who don't "work hard for the glory of the nation")

this style can be witnessed in Putin's behaviour, then you can see him in videos slapping Russian oligarchs as much as governors of states

of course, fascism is authoritarian and has it's roots in conservativism (again, euro-style)

America, meanwhile, is the most liberal (in the european sense of the world) and individualistic nation of the world and worships the leaders of Biz. and so the chance of seeing a fascist or proto-fascist leader as US President is... nearly zero. nearly as much as understanding the matter

The mighty O' may be a huge effin' joke but Hitler was one of your marvelous fascists "who did things."  Many in those days began like you, shrugging it off and figuring "what's a little more attrocity in such an attrocious world."  But eventually it started getting real for the entire world, and smug idiots like yourself had fewer and fewer smirks left to give.  That will be the case this time as well, especially when Putin demands that you kneel and proceeds to unzip his fly.

I am not so sure about that.  It appeared that Hitler was in control of the banksters as well but with a little historical investigation you will find that was not the case. (Not comparing Putin to Hitler) I don't think Putin is anymore "outside" the system than any other world "leader" but it seems to be important for TPTB to have us believe that he is.

LOL so true these military exercises pay for themselves several times over with higher oil prices.  Damn that Putin is good, he just makes money hand over fist. He gets best sea side real estate on the Black Sea with tons of oil and gas rights.  Now all the rich people in all the oblasts get to have nice beachfront condos, and the normal working folks can get some nice summer vacation time also in Crimea, heck place is big enough that an average person from anywhere in Russia, can even buy a second home or apartment further inland from the beach in what is a subtropical climate.  The young people get great beaches to party on in the summertime.  The man works on getting the best value for his citizens. I was on LiveJasmin video chat talking to this Russian girl and she was like totally excited about doing her summer vacation in Crimea.

It was a warning that Russia would and could put 150,000 soldiers into Crimea.

The corrupt western leaders want missiles in Ukraine and ideally the Black Sea port. Russia, all of Russia, will go nuclear if the fools do not desist.

In 1962, Russia installed missiles in Cuba. Only much later did we learn it was in response to the US first installing missiles on the Turkish frontier.

Nobody really blinked. We agreed to remove the Turkish missile batteries, and Kruschev immediately withdrew the offending missiles from Cuba.

We now have recorded proof the US was undermining the elected government of Ukraine. Just as I wrote earlier about Turkmenistan, Putin only wishes to protect Russians.

It is really simple. Putin has no desire to dominate or recapture the old Czarist/Soviet satellites. He does, however, intend to protect Russia. With all my experience overseas in those countries, I would only be worried if Putin put 50% of his GDP into an arms buildup and had 150 divisions plus another 100 in reserve on his western frontier.

Now, he might economically push back hard. Well, all's fair in business. If he outsmarts western businessmen, well, tough. There is no reason this cannot be handled peacefully via 'honest cutthroat business.'

Wed, 03/19/2014 - 10:42 | 4567509 BlindMonkey
BlindMonkey's picture

Serious question here.

Army divisions are around 25k men.  250 divisions would be 6,250,000 men in those divisions.  Total Russian population is around 150 million total.  Men ages 20-35 are about 10% of the population which gives you about 15 million total available.  I am not sure it would even be possible for them to build up that much of an army without tearing the capacity to fund it to the ground.  This is one of  the reasons I never thought the Russian threat was much more than very regional even at it's height of cold war capability.

Wed, 03/19/2014 - 12:40 | 4568127 lakecity55
lakecity55's picture

Exactly rightamundo!

Hitler had about 150+ divisions to attack Russia; so, unless you see an army buildup of that size, it is unlikely Russia has some secret plan to invade western Europe. And, it takes Time to build up such an army, so western spies would be able to detect it.

Is the current leadership in Russia all unicorns and Peace? No.

But neither do they have some plan to 'surround' Europe. However, NATO Does have a plan to surround Russia. I suggest western peoples kick their leaders to the curb and get in some guys who wanna make money, not war. I cannot see where any government in the EU or the US respects its citizens anymore. Time to let them know we are not going to play anymore.

I give as an example the utterly corrupt, senile, human shitball, Harry Reid for example. You could also put the Manchurian Candidate, John "Bomb 'em" McCain as another human shithook.

These guys and their Ilk need to go!

Interfax - March 19, 2014 14:36

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy asked to pay an urgent visit to Russia but his EU colleagues did not let him do so, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported earlier on Wednesday.

"European Council President Herman Van Rompuy requested an immediate visit to Russia on March 17 but the European Council President was not allowed to come to Moscow. His own colleagues did not let him do so. Contending why he should learn the truth once the decision has been made," the ministry said in a commentary posted on Wednesday.

"They have a new blacklist now, that of EU officials prohibited visiting Russia. Ironically, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy tops this list," the ministry said.

The purpose of the canceled visit of Herman Van Rompuy to Russia "was to hear firsthand the Russian opinion about the crisis inside and surrounding Ukraine and ways out of the deteriorating situation ahead of the EU summit due in the end of this week," the commentary said.

I personally think that Putin would order Russian troops to enter eastern and southern Ukraine only as a last resort, i. e. if provoked really hard by the current usurpers in Kiev. I agree with Pat Buchanan's opinion quoted below.

Is Putin the Irrational One?

To invade and occupy all of Ukraine would mean endless costs in blood and money for Moscow, the enmity of Europe, and the hostility of the United States. For what end would Russia, its population shrinking by half a million every year, want to put Russian soldiers back in Warsaw?

But if Putin is not a Russian imperialist out to re-establish Russian rule over non-Russian peoples, who and what is he?

In the estimation of this writer, Vladimir Putin is a blood-and-soil, altar-and-throne ethnonationalist who sees himself as Protector of Russia and looks on Russians abroad the way Israelis look upon Jews abroad, as people whose security is his legitimate concern.

Take the secular muslim republic of Turkmenistan. The Turkmen, now under their 2nd leader, have made ethnic Russians 2nd class citizens. The primary language is Turkic. Some years ago, the regime began to push on the ethnic Russians hard; those who could returned to Russia. The Russians made it clear with their military that Turkmen Russians should be respected. They did not invade. Things calmed down and Russians got better treatment. There is now a lot of Russian investment in Turkmenistan.

Russia is going to take over the former Soviet Union and the west will watch it happen - what happen?  Russia going into financial collapse for the second time in 25 years.

Gorbachev, tear down this wall - oops, that line has already been used.

Putin, since you don't pay your bills, we'll just take half of your shithole country.

Does this mean that the US's MIC would rather sell them HUDs*, than boycott them?

*HUD = Head-Up Display.  A certain Iowa-based company has the market virtually cornered, and have been know to deal with the Ruskies.

I'm thinking the Snowden files are playing a huge part of this. Putin has had them just long enough to digest the info and make a master plan. Take over a country, publish some of the files, take over a country, publish some more info. I bet Barry O"s butt puckers, a daunting prospect, everytime this happens. It would definately explain the "sound and fury, signifying nothing" coming from the US concerning Putin's naked aggression. I bet there is a lot more of this to come. Pass the popcorn.

I'm starting to think I'm one of a handful of people here who don't get drunk or high or forget to take their anti-psycho meds in the morning.
