Soros also said:
Putin “acting out of weakness” following sag in domestic popularity since beginning second term as president
On Merkel: Ukraine crisis “an opportunity for the chancellor to emerge as the leader of a united Europe, not just a chancellor preoccupied with the national interests of Germany.”
And added that the US still holds the biggest bazooka...
“Strongest sanction” against Russia “is in the hands of the United States” because U.S. could sell crude from the Strategic Oil Reserve and depress prices, investor George Soros says during panel discussion in Berlin.
Says Russia needs oil at $100/bbl “to balance the budget”
The problem, Soros notes, is...
“Task is to help Ukraine rather than just punishing Russia because just punishing Russia will push Putin further into a corner and as a wounded animal he would strike back and it would be a lose-lose proposition.”

I can't be the only one that noticed the " oil must be kept above 100/barrel for Russia to balance it's budget" part of that? And does anyone know if that is true? Because if it is true then it's the most important line of this article, IMO. If that's true, Russia holds a big time upper hand over the US and Europe in years to come. Oil is almost assuredly going to stay above that level pretty much from here on out, regardless of what shenanigans this admin pulls for a few weeks with the SPR. So all they have to do is keep selling oil and may has at or above current levels, and their economy will grow as the US/EU continues to sink into a black hole of debt.

But seriously, whether Abiotic or Biotic the fact is the reservoirs are being drawn down and are not able to keep up, we pump water downhole to force oil to the surface but in some of the largest fields we are getting more and more water return, we send wells in all directions but the recovery still follows a bell curve and it doesn't come back in quantities that will support the current usage. Whether we believe peak oil is real or not is somewhat inconsequential in a world that is behaving as if peak oil is very real.

There is something already happening in the oil markets. The WTI Brent spread has narrowed 50% in the last couple of weeks with Brent dropping the most. This is a sign that OPEC is pumping more no matter what they say. Historically when the SPR gets released then OPEC produces more to make up the money with volume and it turns into a self perpetuating circle for about 6 months until oil drops by 40-50%. By then Putin is finished and then they can tighten up supply and get their money back. Iran would be just as guilty as everybody else of pumping as much as they can- biting the hand that feeds it for a few buks.
Then all you Putin lovers can say how great the fuking crook is and go enjoy spring break in Siberia, but it will be another free for all when Putin dies and he will die someday. Maybe not soon but nobody knows the future. No lets see how many red arrow i get with this one!!

Why does he think Russia is the only exporter enjoying $100 oil? Does he think the Saudis want $50 oil? Or Kuwait? Or the UAE?
The Saudis have no particular desire to supply the market. They can fund their domestic spending with 7 million bpd pumped rather than 9, and if they get enough price increase there would no loss of revenue. But more important . . . THEY know Ghawar is depleting. They want to save it for their future citizenry. Why would they want to save it for someone else? So an export fall is a favorable thing for the Saudis. Russia, too. Save it for themselves and let the US and EU get more desperate.
The US SPR is not enough oil to matter. Release it monthly. Russia and KSA would reduce output to hold the price up, then when the SPR is empty, bring back output sloooowly.
This is delusion. When the other side has the winning hand, there is always a preference to believe something else. This is part of the whole belief that Putin is "playing chess while Obama plays checkers."

Just how much oil does Soros think is in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve? According to Wikipedia, the SPR has a maximum capacity of 727 million barrels; a little less than 9 days' worth of global consumption, or 36 days of US consumption. Selling off that oil wouldn't punish Russia, it punishes the US.

They can use QE to buy oil directly from oil companies, and then sell it on the open market at depressed prices.

Too bad Soros didn't spell out that Merkel's leadership in the Ukraine debacle included being directly involved in stirring up the revolution.
There are only two possible explanations for this.
1) Soros is an irrelevant, impotent fool, trying to talk his book and desperately trying to look relevant.
2) Soros is right and Vlad has run out of Polonium.
But to be realistic here. If Soros was in anyway in charge of any of this and not just a State Department stooge, he would be an ex-Soros long before any of this started. He would be an ex-Soros before he could realize any of this was going to happen.
