if the price of oil fell in half the entire US economy would collapse, since marginal producers would be taken off line, tax revenues would disappear, and retail outlets would close (since most of them are corporate). there would less supply at a higher price [please please throw away those old supply demand curvers, in the new misdirected federal reserve malinvested economy it simply doesn't work]

An SPR would briefly drop the price of oil a little, giving countries like China a discount on their oil purchases at US tax payers expense. Because of shipping costs, it isn't clear there would actually be much of a price drop. In any case, global producers would just adjust output to prevent a glut.
