Gas Talks Between Ukraine And Gazprom Cancelled, Naftogaz Chairman Detained On Corruption Probe
Yesterday we warned that the honeymoon is over as Ukraine expects gas prices to rise 40% as Russian discounts fade. Today it appears the situation is even worse:
- *NAFTOGAZ, GAZPROM TALKS FOR MARCH 20-21 CANCELLED: INTERFAX
- *UKRAINE POLICE DETAINS NAFTOGAZ CHAIRMAN BAKULIN: AVAKOV
- *UKRAINE NAFTOGAZ RAID PART OF CORRUPTION PROBE, AVAKOV SAYS
The issues up for debate, of course, are supply and pricing of gas from Russia and the payment for over $2bn of existing debt owed. While Interfax reports that this was because the Ukraine gas company executive was unable to leave the country, which now appears due to corruption allegations ("there's corruption going on here?") but merely exacerbates any Russian gas retaliation concerns.
Talks originally planned to take place on March 20 and March 21 between Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy and Russian gas giant OJSC Gazprom (MOEX: GAZP) have fallen through at the last minute, a source from the Ukrainian government told Interfax.
"The Naftogaz Ukrainy delegation was prepared to fly out [for the meeting], but the head of the company [Naftogaz Ukrainy] was not allowed to leave the country at the last minute," the source said.
The main issues to be discussed were supposed to be the purchase and transit of natural gas, as well as the payment schedule for existing debt.
The source said this concerned a personal ban on leaving the country for Naftogaz's CEO Yevgeny Bakulin.
What is certain, is that the struggling population, most of whom never wanted the recent political overhaul and were quite happy with life as it was, will suddenly demand a return to the living standards under the old, if "horrible" regime, and demand an even quicker overhaul of the current administration.
Something Putin knows all too well.
Why does he know it? Because current events are a carbon copy of what happened in 2007 that led to the infamous 2008 Ukrainian political crisis.

Now we get to find out where everone's loyalties are. interesting times ahead.
Consolidation of Control, Bitchez...
DaddyO
Why not just politely ask the Rooskies to shut the gas off? Oh, and "please" wouldn't hurt either ;-)
Looney
Has anyone seen my car keys? I lost my car keys.
What the Urkaine needs to do is engage in Federal Reserve style monetary policy. That will life their economy up and over the Ruskies.
Ukraine has seriously phuked up. They will now be punished from both sides and no one will be happy.
By certain oligarch who probably wants not just the other half of Ukrnafta, but Naftogaz itself...
money has no loyalty my friend...only "MOAR."
Even Putin is only now understanding that. I would wish you good luck on your fighting with the Russians in their "Crimean War"...but then I would be a liar, no?
I sure don't see a problem with Texas or Oklahoma going 90% this midterm
either. Should be interesting to see how the rest of "fly over country" (or is it "fly into?) goes.
Ironic that I am currently working on a paper about "manhood" right now.
it is taken from Descartes view of our mind and bodies being two totally and serperate distinct "units" thus moving beyond the view "once mine is bigger than yours I'm a man and you're not" view of the world.
I look forward to Texas, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico leaving the union. No reason at all why they shouldn't separate themselves from the parasites on either side of the country.
Floris has a secessionist group as well.I get their newsletter.
Its readership is growing by leaps, and bounds.
I would include Western Colorado (west of the divide) in that scenario....otherwise there would be no water.
Utah has plenty of water.
OOOOH! Yeah, about that detention, bad move.. That's gonna leave a mark!
Was he detained on a corruption probe, or detained because he was sympathetic to the Russians?
Maybe both, or possibly not paying enough bribes to the new oligarch criminals leaders.
So Gazprom, they are a public company in the sense of the Wall street term? Or they are pubiic as in owned by the public because Russia is still somewhat socialist?
no distribution no hard currency. no hard currency no oligarchs. Putin is an Oligarch. Putin must get hard currency. Putin has no hard currency.
You are seriously disabled.
Not so sure about the "vet" part, though...
Hard currency, surely you dont mean the dollar, hard currency is black gold and yellow gold and raw materias. The dollar is soft currency, I use it when I run out of toilet paper and soon I may switch the practice around when it costs me more for the TP in dollars than they do to wipe my ass with them.
They are like Petrobras in Brazil. You can own shares. You collect dividend. But a significant shareholder is the state.
In an oblique way, this is also true of US utility companies. Regulated monopolies.
Putin knows how to play the game and the Game ain't bluff and draw red lines...

Yulia was in jail because of her gas deal with Russia. Now they detain the new guy?
What a sh*tole "country".
Exactly, originally the people were protesting about the endemic corruption but this was escalated when ukraine found they could do a better deal with russia then the EU.
Now they have rule by oligarchs, how is this any better at all for the average person??
A "payment schedule for existing debt" is easy.
"We pay as soon as we collect from the EU".
@Spanish Goop,
And the EU send it as soon as they can find someone who'll lend it to them.
Seeing reports that Russian Duma might consider request of South-East Ukraine regions to join Russia.
Latest opinion polls there show vast support in these areas in favor of this.
This whole question revolves around Odessa, which is not that far east.
In south-east ukraine there are a majority of russian speaking people, voting was split similarly.
There's a very clear geographic split within the country.
These Ukraine amateurs are doing everything they can to "retaliate" and provoke aggresion by Russia so they can get the NATO boots on the ground before they end up in nooses.
At this point I'd expect Putin to just...wait. No need to interfere as your enemy destroys himself. Might be a good idea to beef up border security with Ukraine, to keep the Ukrainians in.
WHat happens if in the upcoming elections a candidate that is anti EU wins?? I doubt he woud be allowed to run though, might get beaten up pretty badly and end up missing, the candidates will be chosen by the bankers just like in the USA
Let us hope these NATO exercises are not a pretext for NATO to fill up Ukraine with their soldiers and military equipment and NOT LEAVE. I think if it even looks like remotely that will happen the Russians will roll into East Ukraine and Odessa.

The main issues to be discussed were supposed to be the purchase and transit of natural gas, as well as the payment schedule for existing debt.
Who said that the west was going to impose sanctions on Russia.
Ohhh, yeh. Dont pay your gas bill.
Geeee, I think the gas bill is going to go up.
Start the printing press.
A subtle item in this is the transit fees.
Europe's gas goes through the Ukraine and the Ukraine has always wanted to collect a toll on that pass through. They would like that toll to grow to pay for all their own consumption.
If they succeeded in that, GAZPROM would have to boost the price to Europe to offset the loss. No way in hell the EU will allow that.
Here's how I think it will work. The EU will negotiate the price directly with Russia. Ukraine will be included in the EU price... no more discounts... hence the 40% hike to Ukraine. Ukraine will be allowed to charge a small transfer fee (mainly to pay for pipeline maintenance). But that money will essentially be used to pay back the IMF loans that are coming to infinity and beyond. The problem is the transfer fee will only be a small % of what the IMF loans will be. Ukraine is going learn very fast what Debt Slavery to the Banker Ponzi is all about. They are going to be squeezed with higher commodity prices PLUS debt. Welcome to serfdom.
A transit charge is standard and usually follows guidelines and will be in the contracts.
It can be based on the distance, for long distances there will be sub-stations, quantity input & output (ukraine should pay transmission costs for its own consumption)
Stealing the gas is not generally approved of and often the transmission company will have a contractual obligation to minimise stealing:-)
Back in the days of the USSR, all being one happy family, storage would have been built in ukraine to even out flows.
russia probably fills these up in autumn ahead of peak demand.
@tonyw,
Stealing countries is not generally approved of but it didn't, AS YET, stop the Nazis who are supported by the EU and US.
Naftogaz Chairman, his AMEX card still works.
/sarc
Perfect! The Russians extract a premium on nat gas and the EU and the US subsidize it. Isn't central bank democracy wonderful!
The system is collapsing, when the lemmings flee. The US oligarchs residing are finished off without a bullet shot.
Not a premium, a cancellation of the discount due to unpaid bills.
@CrashisOptimistic,
Ezactly how is/can the EU stop Russia doing anything.
We've seen how inept and totally lacking in any statesmanship they are with their recent prognostications over the invasion of Ukraine by a bunch of European and US sponsored Nazis, so dream on.
In the case of Europe it isn't a dream it's a FUCKING NIGHTMARE.
LACKEYS, SHILLS, STOOGES AND CLOWNS. EU composite collage. Mirror the US
Replace Ukraine's government with Open Source Software.
but then, wouldnT they need to have computers in order to do that?
Well well, my little Ukrainian droogies, you can stretch your molotov budget by cutting the gas with kerosene. Mix with tuolene and the content of road side flares for optimal results. Stirred, not shaken.
I dare Nuland and McCain to go back to Kiev to hand out bread and espouse freedom and democracy now. Should also send Kagan brothers without Blackwater protection. Within minutes they would be converted into Ukrainian kielbasa.
I thought the issue was that the Naftogaz company was just a parasitical shell, with no need for it to even exist?
Banksters always win, until they don't.
When the Chinese are scrambling to meet debt payments and puking up their gold at 900 be a buyer.
Tag along with the big boys. They won't let us in the club but we can imitate them.
