89% Of Venetians Vote For Independence From Italy, Will Withhold Taxes To Rome

Tyler Durden's picture

Inspired by Scotland's hopes for independence and hot on the heels of Crime'a 95% preference for accession to Russia, 89% of the citizens of Venice voted for their own sovereign state in a ‘referendum’ on independence from Italy. As The Daily Mail reports, the proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ includes the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and has been largely driven by the wealthy 'who are tired of supporting the poor and crime-ridden south' (Venice pays EUR71bn in taxes and receives only EUR21bn in services and investment). The ballot appointed a committee of ten who immediately declared independence from Italy. Venice may now start withholding taxes from Rome. Wonder why the US, Europe, and Japan have not announced the referendum "illegal" and announced sanctions yet?

Via The Daily Mail,

Venetians have voted overwhelmingly for their own sovereign state in a ‘referendum’ on independence from Italy.

Inspired by Scotland’s separatist ambitions, 89 per cent of the residents of the lagoon city and its surrounding area, opted to break away from Italy in an unofficial ballot.

The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

...

Wealthy Venetians, under mounting financial pressure in the economic crisis, have rallied in their thousands, after growing tired of supporting Italy’s poor and crime ridden Mezzogiorno south, through high taxation.

...

Campaigners say that the Rome government receives around 71 billion euros  each year in tax from Venice - some 21 billion euros less than it gets back in investment and services.

...

The ballot also appointed a committee of ten who immediately declared independence from Italy. Venice may now start withholding taxes from Rome.

...

Campaigner Paolo Bernardini, professor of European history at the University of Insubria in Como, northern Italy, said it was ‘high time’ for Venice to become an autonomous state once again.

‘Although history never repeats itself, we are now experiencing a strong return of little nations, small and prosperous countries, able to interact among each other in the global world.’

‘The Venetian people realized that we are a nation (worthy of) self-rule and openly oppressed, and the entire world is moving towards fragmentation - a positive fragmentation - where local traditions mingle with global exchanges.’

...

'We are only at the Big Bang of the movement - but revolutions are born of hunger and we are now hungry. Venice can now escape.’

So how long will it before Barosso, Van Rompuy, Obama, Abe and th rest declare this referendum "illegal" and seek sanctions against the people of Venice...

When people say this sort of thing,  I can't help adding some perspective.

Life on this planet is about 4 billion years old.

Behind every one of you, are your ancestors. All of them, stretching all the way back through that 4 billion years of history to the very beginnings of life itself. That is an unbroken heritage which you have received from your parents, your grandparents and so on.

Do you understand just how unlikely you are?

What a fucking coincidence. Mr. Durden forgot to write that they also VOTED TO STAY IN EU AND NATO in the same referendum. Didn't fit the narrative, did it? Yet the retards here lap it up like it was Putins spunk. Obviously Daily Heil omitted to mention that as well. No coincidence there though...

"Inspired by Scotland's hopes for independence"

Hopes? - Independence would be a cert if the English were allowed to vote. Nearly 80% are for cutting 307 yrs of ingratitude away.

So why haven't you gone to your MP and bitched at him yet?

Tell him you want to vote on  Scottish independence and you want them out. And to scare the living shit out of him, make up some leaflets, organise an online group of likeminded people and turn it into an issue. Tell your MP you're going to do it and then follow through. Make your case.

You have to be bloody minded to win.

Ok here's the thing, as a Scot myself I've looked at the numbers, and came to the conclusion basically Scotland would be better off independent from the UK (even without oil revenues). As a nation, Scotland (without oil) would still be balance of trade positive, exporting more than they import, which means it would become wealthier than it is today. Now, I live in Germany so won't be voting anyway, and I don't have any faith in my fellow Scots, they are not William Wallace, he's 300 years gone... the current crop are like children, unable to stand on their own and accept responsibility for themselves, so I don't actually believe they will vote for independence. But maybe the English could help them on their way.

An apt quote from Trainspotting.

Take a tip from those dictated to in Europe: you will be required to get your acronym approved before you are allowed to think seperatist thoughts.

I propose DUSPA - where D is disunited; & P is either 'part' or 'partly', (though the wrong one of those could, annoyingly, result in war).

NB: you could/may disenfranchise many Hispanics if they misinterprit the 'S'.

In June of 2013 I wrote an article about Scotland and the issues involved in its leaving the UK. This event in the not to distant future may effect the British currency when voters in Scotland will be given the choice of opting for independence in a referendum. What they might do about a currency is still up in the air.

Another problem is that if the UK Government is to agreeable to a separation, will Wales and Northern Ireland move towards independence? I noted this might encourage similar movements in Catalonia, Belgium, Northern League in Italy, Basques, Cornish, and among the Poles. Lots of problems could develop. The article can be found below.

Yeah, sure. Vote this shit up and join the fucking Lega Nord. As one of my great grandfathers called my grandfather, "blacky", because his family came from the south, while the former came from the north. BS. Again the rich wanting to go back to feudal ages where they did their license at will. I see many serfs here supporting going back to those days. Oh the good old days.

They could use Kosovo as an example, a 'special case'. Catalunya did that. Everybody can now declare independence for an ICJ verdict in 2008/09 stated that although the independence itself might not be legal, declaring so is not illegal. In the complicated history of Europe of course there were many examples of city-states that were prosperous. The nation state is relatively young and artificial. In the countries of Europe there are many regions that have closer ties with their cross border counterparts than with their capitol cities. Ultimately that could be the future of Europe: regions. The EU was originally supposed to be a union of regions and not what it now is: a top down centrally led superstate.

I agree 100%.

In fact, it has been predicted that the EU will fragment into a union of regions, and it is starting to happen. This is a good thing.

Belgium will be doing it soon, the UK is doing it, Spain is doing it.

Politics will be brought home. No politician should be able to make decisions for a region where he doen't live.

This is the future of Europe and it will lead the world in showing how it's done.

Well said. People are very well capable of governing themselves on a local and regional level as long as democratic principles with accountability are applied.

"So how long will it before Barosso, Van Rompuy, Obama, Abe and th rest declare this referendum "illegal" and seek sanctions against the people of Venice..."

They won't because under EU law regions can become independent states inside the EU.
