Friday Humor: A Bear Market In... Guillotines?

Tyler Durden's picture

French auctioneers are disappointed (but the elites may not be). Having sold for 193,000 Euros in 2011 (but unable to be shipped to its Russian buyer due to export license issues) this 'slightly used' Second Empire guillotine failed to reach its minimum bid of 40,000 Euros in an auction today in Nantes, France.

This guillotine was used during the Second Empire, not for common criminals, but for the military. It is marked "Army of the Republic" on top of the blade, an expression that refers to the Vendée wars, during the Revolution.

Perhaps one glance at the glaring divergence in the following chart...

will raise the demand for guillotines once again.

Only poor people want guillotines.  The oligarchs want nothing to do with them.

I am against capital punishment, but not against life sentences on islands with gladiator style games of survival televised for profit to pay down national debts.

The guillotine has been rendered obsolete by the modern pneumatic nail gun.

It actually has much more to do with the blade, with wood just not putting on the same show as metal.  But that would likely be an extra 140,000 euros.  The auctioneer is trying to follow the gillette model.  The money is in the blades.

Way too pricey.. way too quick and painless.

All you need is a hank of rope and a convenient tree or lamp post.

The guillotine was usually used for aristocrats. The noose was the way to deal with common criminals and thieves.

Supposedly, Marie Antoinette never actually said "Let them eat cake." It was a phrase which existed long before her time and was skillfully employed for propaganda purposes.

Incidentally, I have it on good authority that the secret ingredient in Soros' morning smoothies is essence of baby.

Mrs. Antoinette is actually say, "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche". Brioche is not cake of batter, but is bread of leaven dough:

I agree that capital punishment is wrong but not so for a revolution. It has to be that way so the chosen live in fear of ever trying to control people for the rest of the history of this planet. Lets give the scum something that will cause sleepness nights for a thousand years.

War, in itself, is unethical.  It may become necessary for survival, but it is still unethical.

Capital punishment?  Yeah, I don't trust the government to execute the right person, and I don't trust the government to make sensible choices on what acts a person can be executed for.  Does a person who rapes and murders a child deserve to die?  Sure.  But execute a person for that crime, and you have taken something that can never be given back, nor can there be any sort of compensation should you find out that you executed the wrong person.

Guillotines offer an interesting peek into human psychology. They were invented by a humanitarian as a humane alternative to hanging - and they most assuredly are that. Yet because they involve severing the head from the body - which looks grisly - they have given way in civilized society to execution methods such as lethal injection. LI is a horrific way to die, but preserves the fiction of humanity by leaving the body intact.

In other words, the obsolescence of the diagonal, descending blade is one more example of the triumph of appearance over function. We value looking good over actual utility, right up until the end.

Those guillotines aren't that complicated, and definitely present a home-based occupation opportunity.  Fairly low start-up costs, and me and my investors see demand accelerating exponentially starting in 2Q '14 and beyond.  If anyone here is interested, let me know and I'll draft up a proposal and an estimated time for delivery.  Oh, by the way, if you are currently laboring under capital controls in your jurisdiction and you want to transact in Bitcoins, I'll need an IRS 4Q showing you're current in all of your capital gains taxes.
