What Happens When "The Workers" Just Don't Care Anymore?

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of The Economic Collapse blog,

One of the big problems in America today is that a lot of people simply do not seem to care about what they are doing anymore.  The level of sloth, laziness and apathy that we are witnessing in this country is absolutely mind-numbing.  Of course this is not true of everyone.  There are still many Americans that are extremely hard working.  But overall, it really appears that people are not taking as much pride in their work as they once did.  Some of the examples that I am about to show you are quite funny.  Others are more than just a little bit disturbing.  But they all have a common theme.  Americans from all walks of life are simply giving up.  Whether they are teachers, delivery people or fast food workers, the truth is that there are a whole lot of people out there that seem to have mentally checked out.

For example, take a close look at the midterm exam posted below.  Does anything stand out to you?...

Midterm Exam

If you can't read the writing in the red box, this is what it says...

"In all honesty, I am already bored with this topic. It is far less interesting than I had hoped and I really don't want to finish this essay. I'm fairly sure you don't really read these so I'm just going to put enough words down to make it seem like I wrote a lot while I kill time. Wanna hear some words that rhyme with time?

Crime, dime, mime, (haha mimes are funny), chime, lime. Aw dude you know what has lime in it? Sprite, it like lemon lime. I could really go for one of those about now, but not sierra mist, that just isn't the same. It tries too hard to be sprite but it just cant pull it off. It should just try to be itself and stop trying to measure up to other sodas."

To be fair, there is a tremendous amount of debate about this photo on the Internet.  Some people insist that no teacher would ever be so careless and that this picture must have been photoshopped.  Others that have studied this photo insist that there is no sign of alteration and that it is 100% authentic.

I will let you come to your own conclusion.

What is undeniable, on the other hand, is that there are a lot of delivery people out there that simply do not seem to care anymore.

For example, in the YouTube video that I have posted below, you can watch a postal worker drive her truck on to someone's lawn.  She is so lazy that she doesn't even have the energy to take a few steps and place the package at the customer's door...

And in this next YouTube video, another postal worker does not even get out of his truck.  He just carelessly tosses a package (which could contain something very expensive) toward the customer's home...

What would cause someone to act like that?

What has caused so many Americans to no longer take any pride in their work?

Another place where this can be seen frequently is at fast food restaurants.

For instance, the photo that I have posted below of a Wendy's employee gulping down soft serve ice cream with his mouth under the Frosty dispenser went viral on the Internet a while back...

Wendy's Employee Enjoying A Frosty

I don't know about you, but to me that is absolutely disgusting.  Needless to say, that worker quickly lost his job.

And of course there is no shortage of other fast food horror stories out there.

The following is one of my favorite examples...

Tony Hill, a pastor in Baltimore, Maryland, once got a deep-fried mouse along with his chicken at Popeye's. The old "I found a rat in my fried chicken!" urban legend is decades old - this particular story was given a little credence, however, by the fact that local health authorities confirmed that the Popeye's in question had a rodent problem.

These days even the criminals are getting lazy.

The following story is very tragic.  Violent crime in America is on the rise, and as the economy continues to get worse people are going to steal just about anything that is not bolted down.

In the little town of Denison, Iowa, a couple of thugs recently shot and killed an elderly couple while they were attempting to steal some scrap metal...

A Denison man told investigators that he and another man shot two people, then set fire to a trailer with the victims inside, according to court documents.

Jayden Chapman said he and Michael D. Schenk shot Marvin Huelsing, 80, and Alice Huisenga, 81, on Monday, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit filed in Crawford County District Court.

This is the kind of thing that we are going to see a lot more frequently in the years ahead.

Those thugs thought that they would get away with murder by burning the victims inside their own trailer, but they foolishly left behind a receipt from the Wal-Mart where they had just been shopping at the scene of the crime...

A pickup truck more than 200 yards north of the trailer also was burned. Near it, investigators found on the ground a receipt from the Denison Walmart with a debit-card number from a food-stamp card. Authorities determined the card was assigned to Schenck.

In this case, justice was served by the slothfulness of the American people, and I hope that those murderers are given the highest penalty allowed by law.

But in general, slothfulness is a terrible thing.  And it isn't just a few people that are being slothful.  This is a national disease.  I like how Jim Quinn put it in his recent article...

The government controlled public education system has flourished beyond all expectations of your owners. We’ve become a nation of techno-narcissistic, math challenged, reality TV distracted, welfare entitled, materialistic, gluttonous, indebted consumers of Chinese slave labor produced crap.

But even though so many of us are aware of what is happening to us, we just can't seem to break out of it as a nation.

It really does seem like most people are walking around in a fog these days.

Maybe the fact that 70 million Americans are on mind-altering drugs has something to do with it.

I don't know.

But unless Americans start taking more pride in their work again and start living their lives with meaning and purpose, it is going to be very difficult to envision a positive future for this country.

Middle Americans who should and will be in the next big MIC war for $400, Alex.

These people were never meant to be born, and as a result, we're never raised with a family structure.

Callous, yes. The .gov will keep these wars going on as long as "support put troops" keeps living on.

Until then, watch HLN and reading the USAToday.

"... what's the difference between ignorance and ambivalence?

I don't know and I don't care."

145 (and counting) are evidently - like Ass***e - too ignorant to see that the use of the word ambivalence in the above mis-quoted epigram is incorrect and nonsensical.

Apathy is the proper word, genius.

You should teach pride and motivation to people who have lost good paying jobs and have now become Walmart 'greeters'... on the other hand however you have got the future of this country pretty much figured out.

The fault is not the business owner. The fault lies with the person in the mirror.

Each of us is responsible for ourselves. The lack of personal responsibility is the root cause. I believe the concept of personal responsibility has been destroyed by the statists who want people to believe they are owed something. When people believe they are owed something, government can then be the provider; thus cementing the power of those in government.

Personal responsibility is the antithesis of government dependence.

And the name of the disease is government.

The cure is as little participation in it, as much as possible- and taking personal responsibility.

Recently bought an Aqualarm made in Chula Vista CA for my boat from local agent in Cairns Oz, worked fine for three hours then died, was eventually replaced with a new unit which only works when you rattle it to get the sliding magnet to return to the alarm position...crap gear and for what it is, not cheap.

You don't need that crap.  Just drill a 1" hole in the side of your boat a few inches up from the waterline.  If the boat starts to take on water, it will just run out the hole.

Men, community and hard work are disposable.  Why care when the safety net of government, otherwise known as welfare, is ready and willing to take care of you until the whole system crumbles.  Look at how helpless the Katrina victims were.  Without government those people did not know what to do with themselves.

Well not all of us are union USPS or UAW scum or O voters.   The other day I had to wait in line for at least 15 minutes while a fat young white woman has $200+ in groceries. She pulls out endless coupons.  The check out lady had to practically audit these coupons because 40% were not taking.

Then she asks credit or debit.  The shopper whispers EBT and WIC. Both!  Well the govt cards were all F'ed Up and were not working.

So another 5 or more minutes are wasted and I left the line as the self check out had cleared. I felt bad for the older checkout lady who probably deals with this shit 20 times a day.

People don't care anymore because there are no laws except for people who are responsible.  We are taxed to death to pay for moochers, criminals, illegal aliens and criminal politicians plus tax breaks for billionaires like Buffett.

It sickens me what .gov has done to our country and population. Two weeks ago, the granddaughter of an elderly deceased couple from next door came to my parents house to 'mooch' money for gas. Not knowing that I have a weekend house just down the street, these same 'moochers' came for a visit today to 'mooch' money for gas. I gave them a gallon of gas and asked when I would get it returned. Hope that is the last I see of them.....what is sad. The elderly couple were golden folks and worked very hard for the little they had...plus they never mooched.

This is your .gov and you society that has pushed these people to do this....next up, the granddaugher will be running with a group and stealing, then having babies and 'mooching' on the system even more.

Pony up folks (not the ZH crowd), this is obviously what you wanted because you have voted for it.

That is a sad story. If they come back - tell em to get a job. Stay in touch with your parents about this.  Who knows what these creeps might do.

I am working on growing more food because every visit to the grocery store is soul destroying.  Aldi is better because their store brands are cheaper. The Free Shit Army want the premium brands sold a regular grocery stores.  Might as well get Bryers Ice Cream if the taxpayers are paying for it.

They should at least make them go through one line so the people who actually pay with their own money are not inconvenienced by their WIC and EBT cards being tapped out.

This.  It isn't the schools; we've always had losers.  The problem is that fewer and fewer kids think they even have a chance to turn out to be winners, no matter how hard they work.  Who wants to put their heart and soul into anything when the best they can do is make Shift Supervisor, and barely afford a crappy life?  At that point, might as well toss it in and just be a goof.  At least you can enjoy yourself some of the time, rather than become embittered.  The median household income (2 workers) is right around $50k.  That means daycare for the kids, at $200/wk. per kid.  In other words, work as hard as you can just to tread water.

America's elites hate work so much they've demeaned it, devalued it, and made it worthless for most people.  Anybody who doesn't work for him or her self is going to be treated like a replaceable part of little value.  People respond to the way they're treated.  In an increasingly neo-feudal society, we have the 1% Aristocrats, 15% retainers to the nobility, and about 84% serfs.  Serfs behave as one would expect.  Give somebody a realistic reason to give a shit and they usually do.

Quite so.

If I might just add, the demeaning and inhuman approach inculcated by the Harvard Business School and such warm cuddly outfits as GE has a large part to play. We have seen their ways greedily copied here in the UK by unimaginative, and often insecure, middle managers all to happy to promote their careers with some off-the-shelf template rather than rouse themselves to a higher standard that would invlve enagaging the potential loyalty and commitment of those under them. So,rather than working for bosses who inspire respect, people zone out in  the face of yet another no-mark automaton demanding more hours for less return and less regard. When people are just a number, don't expect them to give a shit for the boss, the company, or whatever knobless new demand they seek to impose on the workforce. Frankly, the term "Human Resurces" speaks a volume of the lack of regard for workers from management. Lazy, witless, replicant managers are endemic in western business, and the increased disenchantment of the workforce  (let's face it, there are always some malcontents but a minority) is the inevitable consequence. At an individual level of, say, the man eating from the ice-cream machine it is a personally inexcusable dereliction, but when a significant section of the workforce are utterly disheartened then it can only be the fault of the so-called leaders. Consciously or subconsciously, people know they are being abused.

Good point.  About a decade ago, when Jack Welch was revered as a deity by the American executive class, treating people horribly became not just fashionable, but the understood way of things.  Overall corporate culture has become just poisonous.

You're quite right to single out the term, "Human Resources."  Indeed. To be mined, and the tailings discarded without a second thought.  These bastards won't even fire people anymore; they send Security to escort them to the edge of the property, have temp workers box up their stuff and send it to their house by courier, and de-activate their key-card, health benefits, and whatever else by day's end.  Then they contest their Unemployment claim automatically, knowing they win nearly all adjudications without review.  Some jailers have more compassion for their charges, and no jailbird ever made a jailer as rich as these assholes have beecome.

Among these guys are some of the most vicious psychopaths I've ever encountered.  Not all, but some.  And the culture actively cultivates and encourages that..  It will be its downfall; already is.  Even the smartest psychopaths will eventually screw up almost inexplicably, but we've let these people be in charge of our whole country.

What happens when the military workers don't care anymore - don't want to fight and die for the "freedom" to be spied on, x-rayed in airports, taxed to death by every level of government, "free" markets, fake money, "independent" media and press?  And if they change their minds about who the real "enemy" of the people is?   Wait, this might just get interesting.......

WTF is "military workers?"  Any parent who let's their kid join the military should be up on child abuse.  It is a f**king joke - the military.

Defense contractor workers?  Useless.  Building crap to kill people.   What is the point?  How many small countries are left for us to drone, bomb and destroy.

And when did the American mentality get to the point where the instant solution is "oh let's bomb them!"  When did an entire society become a bunch of cruel psychopaths?  It is because we have an attention span of about 5 milliseconds.

I almost wish people would start bombing Americans with B-52s or Russian Bear bombers so they could experience being bombed.  Insanity.

Oh and it is worse than that.

Much of the newer and even older U.S. weapons are junk like the F-35, F-22 is not as bad but close. The guys behind the F-16 and A-10, which were realtively cheap, have many videos on YouTube about the F-35 turkey. Junk.

The M-4 based on the 50 year old M-16. It still has problems.  not the problems of a run of the mill AR15 either.  Junk.

The M-16 was total shit when it came out.  Why was it pushed? Because Lady Bird owned stock in the company. Not sure if that was Colt.  LBJ had stock and deals with all the defense contractors.  This is one reason why JFK had to go.

yeah great scum is get an IMF or World Bank loan to buy some defective crap from the USA.

There are also many, many young people happy to have any kind of regular job at all, who are making obviously sincere efforts to add their best to what they are doing in a bad situation.  I think for people of good character, with a certain kind of upbringing, slothful attitudes and 'giving up' is distasteful and undignified.  Around 2007 I began to see more and more (well brought-up?  College educated?) white men and women in positions that had lately been held down by minorities.  They often brought an attention to service I had not seen in decades.

Yes, I said 'white.'

The worse things get in this country, and they will get worse, much worse ... the more the working wage slave class will divide itself along racial lines.  We can 'all get along' but I know where I am putting my chips down.  It's an instinct, tribal, what have you ... but who said there was anything wrong with going by your instincts?  Oh, yes ... the technocrats that came up with this petri dish experiment called Integration and are striving to enforce its on-existent doctrine ...

Really? We have people wired 24 hours a day to their job. For no more money. The companies make record profits, the workers get naught.

There is no respect of workers by companies (outsourcing, offshoring, union busting, shit benefits, ...). No wonder workers don't give a shit.

At the same time, technology is making workers as replaceable as drones, so companies don't have to care.

Specialization is what enables our society to run and is the basis for evolution.  I grow a garden annually and know a lot about growing and grafting plans but I would never butcher a hog because I don't the time/knowledge required to do so nor would I want to ruin/contaminate the meat in the process.

Ditto critical things like setting a broken leg which if not done properly will have all kind of dire and long-term consequences.  In in the most basic organizations of human tribes, you quickly see specialization and that is a good thing.  Humans are an incredibly fragile and weak physical species that can't last alone for long in isolation especially in cold weather.

People shouldn't waste their time with empty TV consumption and other activities?  No and people need to keep constantly learning in life but there are only so many hours in the day and as someone with a family & kids you only have some much available bandwidth.  Figure out how to balance it and make it all work is a daily grind and struggle but it has its minutes where it is worth it.

You hang a pig upside down and cut its throat to let it bleed out over a basin so as to save the blood to mix with cereals and spices for blood sausage, yum. You open it down the middle, careful not to spill the contents of the intestines into the abdomen. You disembowel it and rinse the intestines very well, as it is used for sausage casing when thoroughly cleaned. All the organs of the abdomen and chest are removed. The liver and kidneys are delicious and the heart goes for head cheese along with the head and tongue minus the brain, ears and eyes. The brains can be used to tan the hide in the ancient method after it is skinned. The dogs usually get the ears. The fat is well trimmed and thrown into a pot and heated until it melts and clarifies, The crunchy bits, or cracklings, are skimmed off and eaten as a treat. What you have left is lard, which has many uses and I still use it - its the guilty secret of my flaky pie crust. The cuts of a pig are marked out in any cook book, at least the old ones.
