Russian Platoon Withdrawing From Ukrainian Border, Russian Defense Ministry Says

Tyler Durden's picture

Overnight, AFP reported that Russian forces have begun a gradual withdrawal from the Ukrainian border, citing a Russian defense ministry official. "In recent days, the Russian forces have been gradually withdrawing from the border," the Ukrainian defence ministry's general staff spokesman Oleksiy Dmytrashkivskiy said in a telephone interview. Moments ago, Reuters confirmed this story:

  • RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY SAYS ONE INFANTRY BATTALION IS WITHDRAWING FROM REGION NEAR UKRAINIAN BORDER - RUSSIAN STATE NEWS AGENCIES

And Bloomberg added:

  • RUSSIA: PLATOON HEADING BACK TO SAMARA REGION FROM ROSTOV: RIA
  • RUSSIAN PLATOON RELOCATING AFTER DRILL IN ROSTOV REGION: RIA

So is Putin de-escalating, and now merely biding his time until the Ukraine elections when the population, suddenly facing 100% price increases in heating costs, capital controls, and a collapsed economy will have to empower the current government to continue the status quo? Or just another headfake to show that even Putin is malleable to "negotiations"? Or, as the official explanation says, it was merely the end of a drill, and the platoon will now be stationed elsewhere along the border?

Stay tuned to find out.

No.. Just for lunch and some hookers!

But I think Putin is really using this Ukrainian conflict as a near real war exercise for the Russian military to get it in better shape especially with its officers, communications, logistics support, equipment, etc after many years of being dormant. Russia has not had the wars which have kept the US military in good readiness so Ukraine is an opportunity to do that.

Yup, an infantry platoon is from 40 t0 48 men, a company about 200 men, while an infantry batallion is about 800 men.

A platoon is commanded by a lieutenant. a company by a captain, while a batallion is commanded by a lieutenant colonel.

Headline reads 'platoon' but in the text of story it reads 'battalion'...

platoon = 9 to 100 members depending on type; ie, engineers, infantry, etc

battalion = 300 to 1,200 members comprised of several companies again depending on type and primary mission

company = 3 to 6 platoons depending on type; ie, artillery, rifle, engineers, etc

brigade = 3 or more battalions

army = a hell of a lot of GIs and officers

In addition to this confusion each country has it's own composition of these units.

I looked this stuff up on Wiki and hope you appreciate it... but I was also curious

Did you look up US military breakdown. Russian forces have a lot less people in a companys, battalions and regiments then we have. So a battalion is nothing compared to what they moved up over the last few weeks.

I think Putin saw the IMF's proposal, and need only bide his time, before the Russian speaking part of Ukraine is demanding to get annexed like Crimea.

Why spend all the money on a military invasion, loss of life, bad PR, when, all Putin has to do is let the IMF turn Ukraine into Greece, just with a lower starting point?  Oh and Putin gets billions from Ukraine the IMF and the USSA as well as the EUSSR in backed loans from Ukraine.

Seems like Putin could spend a ton of money, and lives and get the Eastern and Southern half of Ukraine, or less Maiden run the country into the ground Greecian-style, and then in 6 months to a year, sponsor a few revolutionary groups (who knows, maybe Right Sector will get a new PR manager, and get recycled) and start demanding sucession and subsequent annexation?

Yet again, Putin+1 USA-1 EU-lolasiftheyevencount

If you are Putin it pays to allow this to play out. First the IMF goes to Ukraine. Then it imposes economic reality on the country. The people suffer but the IMF transfers huge amounts of money (taken from the EU and the USA) to Ukraine. Then Ukraine gives it to Russia to pay overdue gas bills. The people riot over horrible economic conditions, Putin moves into eastern and southern Ukraine to "protect Russians". Putin gets what he wants (southern and eastern Ukraine)and the EU and USA pays for it.

They are going for an "IMF Riot" in Ukraine...

When a nation is, "down and out, [the IMF] takes advantage and squeezes the last pound of blood out of them. They turn up the heat until, finally, the whole cauldron blows up," as when the IMF eliminated food and fuel subsidies for the poor in Indonesia in 1998. ... This economic arson has it's bright side - for foreign corporations, who can then pick off remaining assets, such as the odd mining concession or port, at fire sale prices. - Greg Palast

NSA has secret camera in Putin's office. US, EU, NATO screw with Putin till camera sees Putin get from behind desk and approach large wheel at which time they stop screwing with Putin... Putin returns to seat behind desk... pretty secretary resumes position on Putin's lap... not sure about last part but it makes for a good mental image.

Well, that is a large constituency that has just departed so if any lines are to be drawn here they will clearly be seen electorally.

Ukraine is a..."non-normative" State like Iraq everyone agrees "there is a Capital here"...but there is a question as to where the "country"(as in Nation) is exactly.

Again..."two go in, one come out" here.

This is also more time to cement deals to kill the petro-dollar, he's letting the Washingtom circle jerks hang themselves. Wonder what Bazel will do.

My guess is that this situation won't last too long, either Putin will have to invade or he will pull forces back to barracks.

My main reason for this thought is that it is difficult to keep troops in the field for too long just hanging out. You can't just keep them sitting on the border in tents and field conditions without a mission.

Also who cares if they are right on the border or not, heck within a few hours multiple airborne divisions can fly from anywhere in Russia and be dropped all over Urkaine. A day later and a 100 miles and all the armored divisions can race right back to and through the border.

this is really not much of a story as the more important and telling aspect was that the negotiations between Lavrov and Kerry in Paris did nothing to change the situation and any kind of "deal" remains as unattainable as it was before the Crimea referendum so essentially nothing has changed.

in fact, even our own MSM (much to my shock and surprise) has already shot the "massive pending Russian invasion" myth full of holes. a crew from the NYT or LA times (i forget which) traveled the entire border between Russia and the Ukraine and found nothing near the 100,000 troops that Washington and Kiev has spent the last month hyping. even the locals they interviewed along the way, on both sides of the border confirmed that no such forces existed beyond those which had previously participated in an exercise but had long since returned to base. the border has been, according to the locals being interviewed, a very quiet and normal place. they even took the crew to a spot which appeared in one of the videos and pointed out where tracks which were purported to have come from heavy Russian armor where in fact the result of construction equipment.

much like the "proof" of the Assad chemical weapons attack, the massive amounts of you tube videos purporting to show large scale Russian military movements are questionable at best. for example the tanks in almost every video and snapshot, appear to be older model t-64's which the Russian military no longer uses but do make up the back bone of the Ukrainian armored forces. which begs the question who's military are we seeing in those videos and why are they constantly being hyped as a Russian invasion force?

it's ironic that Washington and the west has spent so much energy trying to paint Moscow as an arrogant villain, blinded by misplaced ambition and out of touch with reality when in fact the exact opposite is true. it is the western powers especially Washington that, either out of willful arrogance and their delusional myopic worldview or worse still intentional provocation, does not see the danger these foolish and short sighted actions are putting us all in.

Lavrov made it very clear in a recent interview with RT exactly what this is really all about, all the military drills conventional and nuclear, the annexation of Crimea and the tensions over the Ukraine. when Putin says he has no intention of invading the Ukraine he is telling the truth, there will not be an invasion, if the Washington and NATO pushes it's agenda to hard in Kiev, if they violate the last barrier that brings NATO to Russia's front door...

well, lets just say Lavrov made it a point to show on a map all the NATO military bases currently surrounding the Russian federation, he also pointed out how those bases represented the lies told to Moscow that NATO would honor the strategic balance born out of the cold war, a creeping invasion and aggression now coming to a critical mass. you may have had to read a little between the lines to understand what was most the important message in that interview, but not much. all the drills, all the military build up all the dress rehearsals for preemptive nuclear strikes have nothing to do with the Ukraine.

they are a warning, maybe the final one aimed at the west, one last chance to restore the balance and avoid what was two decades ago unthinkable.

we know what "deescalation" really means in terms of official Russian military doctrine, lets hope the situation does not deteriorate to the point where Moscow feels it has no other choice that to exercise that option.

Welll played Putin, notice all the focus was moved from the Crimea to a possible Russian invasion of the Ukraine, now Putin will trade his good intentions in slowly moving back with no further sanctions, the current ones have absolutely no impact on Russia anyhow and at the end of the day he ends up with the crimea for absolutely no cost.

Once again the West was hopelessly out played and the West now has a moral responsibility of supporting the Ukraine which will cost Biliions of dollars, that will flow to Russia in return for over priced gas.
