Massive 8.2 Quake Hits Near Chile Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued; Residents Evacuating
At shortly after 1945ET, a massive 8.2 (revised up from 8.0) earthquake hit close to the coast of Chile:

The BBC reports the quake was shallow (which means it felt more powerful) and the tsunami wave's arrival is imminent. Copper prices are jumping on the news as the region is an active mining area.

A major earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, near the mining area of Iquique, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
It was centred 86km (56 miles) north-west of the mining area of Iquique.
It said the quake was very shallow, only 10 kilometres below the seabed, which would have made it feel stronger. It was centred 86 kilometres northwest of Iquique.
A tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of South America has been issued.

Geophysics is not my domain, but Chile, Alaska and Japan seemed to get the WORST ones (9s), Peru and California get 7s and 8s typically.
Although I have been reading about the Cascadia Fault off the coast of WA, OR and BC, it seems to throw off huge quakes maybe every 500 years or so. There are old Japanese records of a tsunami that crossed the Pacific they belleve camce from a massive Cascadia earthquake (before Lewis & Clark).

If the fault is rockin don't come a knockin, seems like it was doing the same thing as volcanos tend to do before a giant eruption.
Also that particular area is known for large scale earthquakes like this it looks like.
They had an 8.5 - 9.0 depending the measurement there as recently as 1877.

Kind of strange that the tsunami buoys in the Caribbean (in addition to those in the eastern Pacific) are in event mode.

That is only for the last 24 hours for those warnings but if you look at USGC data one of the fault lines right by Puerto Rico has been rumbling all month also but it hasn't really gone above 3.0 and the most recent one they have listed happened 23 hours ago.
That is what is triggering those buoys but a major scale earthquake maybe on it's way over there also.

135 years after 1877 would have put the next major 8.0 or greater earthquake at 2012. I'd say pretty much on the money for a prediction of something like this considering in was made in 2005.

Looking at this map, I don't see more than some plates and glasses getting rattled at Simon's hacienda.

Any major event on the Pacific ring of fire is usually followed by harmonic events elsewhere along the ring. Impossible to predict where but I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of big ones in california, Cascadia, Alaska, Japan, Philippines, or Indonesia in the next few days. or maybe the vibrations could reach inland a bit and trigger Yellowstone - wouldn't that be fun?

Arica has long been on my list of places to see. It's one of the driest places on earth - it basically doesn't rain. It's on the coast and gets its water from the run off from the Andes. It stays around 70-80F every day of the year with SF like fog. Apparently lots f olive groves which I've always liked. And dirt cheap to live. Bad points I've read about are supposedly the dust and wind, and the real downer: earthquakes and tsunamis. I'll be very interested to see how they cope now they have the tsunami warning in place.
