Massive 8.2 Quake Hits Near Chile Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued; Residents Evacuating

Tyler Durden's picture

At shortly after 1945ET,  a massive 8.2 (revised up from 8.0) earthquake hit close to the coast of Chile:

The BBC reports the quake was shallow (which means it felt more powerful) and the tsunami wave's arrival is imminent. Copper prices are jumping on the news as the region is an active mining area.

For some context of how big this is...

The Tsunami warning:

The tsunami zone...

and the potential travel zone of the Tsunami

And the evacuation

Via BBC,

A major earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, near the mining area of Iquique, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It was centred 86km (56 miles) north-west of the mining area of Iquique.

It said the quake was very shallow, only 10 kilometres below the seabed, which would have made it feel stronger. It was centred 86 kilometres northwest of Iquique.

A tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of South America has been issued.

Of course this is just the natural and unforeseeable phenomenon that shocked the global economy in Japan

Yeah, or California.

I would feel better if we got a post from DCRB sometime soon.  Though, I don't think Chile was his usual South American destination.  I could be wrong about that.  Damn, the things you THINK you remember about somebody and then realize you DON'T.

Alas, all TPTB need to do, is to follow him and his trail of followers, and the havens get hit one after another.

If you want to front-run the place or scheme that will get hit next, all you have to do is follow his next article on "The place to be".  I therefore predict/advise, that Simon be less public (on ZH) about "the next haven" and provide this info to his paying followers/subscribers, and to offer a Referral Benefit by spreading the Gospel by WOM (word of mouth).

Peru (even Lima), just like California will get theirs at some point.  They did not even feel this one.

I did not hear about it because I was playing Husband's Taxi Service to my wife and her friend going to the opera tonight...

Geophysics is not my domain, but Chile, Alaska and Japan seemed to get the WORST ones (9s), Peru and California get 7s and 8s typically.

Although I have been reading about the Cascadia Fault off the coast of WA, OR and BC, it seems to throw off huge quakes maybe every 500 years or so.  There are old Japanese records of a tsunami that crossed the Pacific they belleve camce from a massive Cascadia earthquake (before Lewis & Clark).

Malaysia is going to release the full transcript of
the MH-370.

It took 3 weeks to translate from english to malay,
and then back to english again for the press.

This is a big news day for CNN.

Some might ask, "Why didn't they just release the
raw recording in the first place",

The answer is it took 3 weeks to find an old
recording of said pilot saying "Good night Malaysian three seven zero"

The wife said that the earlier
"All right, good night", could have only been a CIA
pilot controlling the plane.

I don't know about unforseen the particular fault has been fairly active this month.

They track the USGC data.

If the fault is rockin don't come a knockin, seems like it was doing the same thing as volcanos tend to do before a giant eruption.

Also that particular area is known for large scale earthquakes like this it looks like.

They had an 8.5 - 9.0 depending the measurement there as recently as 1877.

That is only for the last 24 hours for those warnings but if you look at USGC data one of the fault lines right by Puerto Rico has been rumbling all month also but it hasn't really gone above 3.0 and the most recent one they have listed happened 23 hours ago.

That is what is triggering those buoys but a major scale earthquake maybe on it's way over there also.

From the wikipedia page.

The rupture area of the 1877 earthquake has been recognised as one of the major seismic gaps on the plate boundary, known as the "Northern Chile Seismic Gap". The Mw = 7.7 2007 Tocopilla earthquake occurred at the southern edge of the gap, but is not considered to have necessarily reduced the risk of a great megathrust earthquake within this area.[2] A recurrence period of 135 years has been estimated for great earthquakes along this part of the plate boundary, suggesting that a similar earthquake to the 1877 event is possible in the near future.[11]

135 years after 1877 would have put the next major 8.0 or greater earthquake at 2012. I'd say pretty much on the money for a prediction of something like this considering in was made in 2005.

Short the S&P..... Lol. After you get ass raped trying that maybe you could drag your balls across three miles of broken glass to ease the pain.

Any major event on the Pacific ring of fire is usually followed by harmonic events elsewhere along the ring. Impossible to predict where but I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of big ones in california, Cascadia, Alaska, Japan, Philippines, or Indonesia in the next few days. or maybe the vibrations could reach inland a bit and trigger Yellowstone - wouldn't that be fun?

Well I guess this tsunami wave will push all the debris back to Japan that was originally heading to California and the west coast.

Arica has long been on my list of places to see. It's one of the driest places on earth - it basically doesn't rain. It's on the coast and gets its water from the run off from the Andes. It stays around 70-80F every day of the year with SF like fog. Apparently lots f olive groves which I've always liked. And dirt cheap to live. Bad points I've read about are supposedly the dust and wind, and the real downer: earthquakes and tsunamis. I'll be very interested to see how they cope now they have the tsunami warning in place.
