Massive 8.2 Quake Hits Near Chile Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued; Residents Evacuating

Tyler Durden's picture

At shortly after 1945ET,  a massive 8.2 (revised up from 8.0) earthquake hit close to the coast of Chile:

  • *MAGNITUDE 8.0 QUAKE HITS OFF COAST OF CHILE, USGS REPORTS
  • *CHILE QUAKE MAGNITUDE REVISED UP FROM 8.0 TO 8.2 BY USGS
  • *FLASH: TSUNAMI WARNING ISSUED AFTER MAGNITUDE 8.0 QUAKE HITS OFF
  • *QUAKE CUTS ELECTRICITY SUPPLY TO MUCH OF ARICA, CHILE: TVN

The BBC reports the quake was shallow (which means it felt more powerful) and the tsunami wave's arrival is imminent. Copper prices are jumping on the news as the region is an active mining area.

For some context of how big this is...

The Tsunami warning:

The tsunami zone...

and the potential travel zone of the Tsunami

And the evacuation

Via BBC,

A major earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, near the mining area of Iquique, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It was centred 86km (56 miles) north-west of the mining area of Iquique.

It said the quake was very shallow, only 10 kilometres below the seabed, which would have made it feel stronger. It was centred 86 kilometres northwest of Iquique.

A tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of South America has been issued.

  • *TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL IS IMMINENT, CHILE EMERGENCY OFFICE SAYS
  • *NOAA SAYS READINGS INDICATE TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED BY QUAKE
  • *NOAA: TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COAST NEAR QUAKE
  • *FIRST TSUNAMI WAVES REACH CHILE COAST, RADIO COOPERATIVA SAYS
  • *CHILE MAGNITUDE 8.0 QUAKE HIT AT DEPTH OF 10 KMS, USGS SAYS
  • *CHILE TSUNAMI OF 1.8 METERS REACHES IQUIQUE, TVN REPORTS

Of course this is just the natural and unforeseeable phenomenon that shocked the global economy in Japan

  • *CHANCE OF TSUNAMI TO BE HIGHER THAN 1.8M REPORTED: TRESGRAVE
  • *CHILE TO GET 'DAMAGING WAVES' FOR AT LEAST COUPLE HRS: FRYER
  • *HAWAII MAY GET ADVISORY FROM TSUNAMI POST CHILE QUAKE: FRYER
  • *N.Z. MAY GET 'DANGEROUS CURRENTS' WHEN TSUNAMI ARRIVES: FRYER

Check on our bearing buddy, hope he is well

Good thing nothing like this could happen in Japan.

NoDebt's picture

Yeah, or California.

I would feel better if we got a post from DCRB sometime soon.  Though, I don't think Chile was his usual South American destination.  I could be wrong about that.  Damn, the things you THINK you remember about somebody and then realize you DON'T.

Which colored bubble represents Simon Black's ranch? Poor guy can't catch a break. First all if his escape plans across the world are caving into Uncle Sam and now this.

Suisse's picture

HAARP must be targeting Simon Black.

Kirk2NCC1701's picture

Alas, all TPTB need to do, is to follow him and his trail of followers, and the havens get hit one after another.

If you want to front-run the place or scheme that will get hit next, all you have to do is follow his next article on "The place to be".  I therefore predict/advise, that Simon be less public (on ZH) about "the next haven" and provide this info to his paying followers/subscribers, and to offer a Referral Benefit by spreading the Gospel by WOM (word of mouth).

Legolas's picture

Yeah, or Yellowstone.

Peru (even Lima), just like California will get theirs at some point.  They did not even feel this one.

I did not hear about it because I was playing Husband's Taxi Service to my wife and her friend going to the opera tonight...

Geophysics is not my domain, but Chile, Alaska and Japan seemed to get the WORST ones (9s), Peru and California get 7s and 8s typically.

Although I have been reading about the Cascadia Fault off the coast of WA, OR and BC, it seems to throw off huge quakes maybe every 500 years or so.  There are old Japanese records of a tsunami that crossed the Pacific they belleve camce from a massive Cascadia earthquake (before Lewis & Clark).

Just glad you're OK.

I have no idea about earthquakes, other than the basics.  I've obviously got my hands full just trying to keep my South American geography straight.

I see the futures are green. Nothing will bring this market down.

booboo Our company is Lima, Peru, far enough away so that likely felt it, nothing more.  I am calling to be sure...

If we had only listened to Al Gore...

caustixoid's picture

We DID listen to Al Gore.  That's why you're paying carbon taxes.  And thank god too,  without them this would have been a Richter 11 Earthquake.  Thank you Al Gore.

booboo

All is OK, just called the house, they did not even feel it.

Thank you!

EDIT:

Thanks to ALL my virtual friends here at ZH.

Glad to see you are okay DCRB!

Thanks, we got back some 6 days ago (to the USA).  My wife's friend (who went along to the opera tonight) is also a Peruvian lady, they came back some 5 days ago, coincidence.

ThroxxOfVron's picture

I guess the Fat Lady didn't sing at your Wife's opera perf. tonight...

Keep on rolling, DCRB.

Suspicious 0bservers called it a week ago and again yesterday.

Click on the most recent update and you can go to the youtube channel from there.  Beware, space weather is more jargon-laden than finance.  Why coronal holes should change gravity is beyond my comprehension.  But yes, the guy did predict this.

Infinite QE's picture

Gravity is only electromagnetism in action.

Drachma's picture

Precisely, an electric dipole force analogous to the Van der Waals force described for electrochemical attraction.

Looks like we have some AGW crusader giving our down arrows.

Mesquite's picture

That area has had several 6+ quakes in recent weeks leading up to this...

I Write Code's picture

Several 6+ quakes is several too many and one 8.2 is waay too many.

So let's hope the 8.2 is not the precursor to the big one.

I get a little extra wary here in Lost Angeles every time there's a quake anywhere around the Pacific rim, these couple of 4's and 5's we just had, hope they innoculated us ...

Hang tough, Chile.

Troll Magnet's picture

Some 150 aftershocks thus far. Lots of 2s and some 3s and even 4s mostly around La Habra.

Stay strong.

I prefer someone else's explanation that recent seismic events are caused by the weight of government bullshit on the earth's crust.

Ocean22's picture

Sure did. Sun is behind all of this. NOT global warming.

jerry_theking_lawler's picture

Love Ben and his work...but you can't pin him down on his 'predictions'....he doesn't predict SIZE of quakes...he says he can only predict UPTICKS....trust me, I have tried to pin him down a few times on this.....my thoughts, he is a good resource, that is it.

Sabibaby's picture

"Suspicious 0bservers called it a week ago and again yesterday."

Pretty sure you're he'll get his prediction right when he makes one everyday. -At least it appears that way from his channel.

Now CNN has something to do for a month.

rubiconsolutions's picture

Maybe caused by the Malaysian airliner auguring into the Pacific?

ThirdWorldDude's picture

Exactly!

A more important question would be: are people geographically challenged or do they suffer from short-term memory impairment?

Infinite QE's picture

Be safe there my fellow humans.

Hang the bankers.

There must be a GS bankster to blame for this.

willwork4food's picture

If not, there soon will be.

BlindMonkey's picture

You watch. The SEC will find a way to blame HFT for causing tremors in the earth's crust.

mickeyman's picture

On the contrary. They'll say the increased liquidity reduced the damage.

A Nanny Moose's picture

Global Warming. It's Milton Friedman's fault.

0b1knob's picture

Bush's fault.   Or fracking in the US caused it.

CNN has just issued a breaking news bulletin about the lost Maylasian flight. That's not a joke. Nothing about this.

francis.sawyer001's picture

Malaysia is going to release the full transcript of
the MH-370.

It took 3 weeks to translate from english to malay,
and then back to english again for the press.

This is a big news day for CNN.

Some might ask, "Why didn't they just release the
raw recording in the first place",

The answer is it took 3 weeks to find an old
recording of said pilot saying "Good night Malaysian three seven zero"

The wife said that the earlier
"All right, good night", could have only been a CIA
pilot controlling the plane.

gonetogalt's picture

Geez, buddy...wish it were really you!

francis.sawyer001's picture

I happy to see anything not having to do with HFT,

I'm expecting Sir Black to issue a 99 reasons its
still safe to 'go galt' in Chile. Expect to see the ZH post
within the hour.

Read the tea leaves, francis is alive and kicking.
